how to question - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi folks this is somewhat of a noob question forgive me if its a double post but i cant find the answer im looking for
question:
ive flashed roms before and created nandroid backups
wen i try selectively restore after flashing a new rom there is always a problem like crashes or reboots etc without success
how do i restore msgs and games/game data after flashing a new rom?
i have Resurrection rom now if i wanted to go to miui is it possible to restore my games and msgs etc ?

Titanium Backup Pro (buy it from Google Play). Enables you to backup your apps/settings & also backup SMS/call logs to XML files which you can then restore.

thanks alot ill try it out

Rom Toolbox app is another good alternative

confused about backing up

ok iv searched about and read the threads that popped up under where i typed the title.
when i got my S2 the first thing i did was flash the litening rom, iv been using it for a couple of months got loads of apps, texts, numbers and emails on there.
now on my old htc i had an app which did a backup of all my contacts texts emails etc called pim backup, worked ok on that phone, maybe a bit slow and crap but hey did the job.
right i fancy trying out a new rom, iv read that there are programs etc for backing up my rom incase of a problem, and programs to back up apps etc so i dont need to re download, whats gonna happen to my texts and emails?
any help or even a shove in the direction of a guide that i cant find will be appreciated
You do a full backup of your ROM (including personal stuff) with ClockWorkMod-recovery.
For single apps I recommend titanium backup. Note that your messages and such may not be compatible to other roms. For example, you cannot restore the messages from a TW-ROM into MIUI.

ok well im currently running a backup on clockworkmod so this will do all my texts emails etc etc so when the new rom is installed i do the same but with restore??
and ill then be on a new rom, but with everything still on my phone (apart from any apps) which i restore thru titanium.
and i shall go look for this titanium backup right now.
thankyou very much
ooohh to add, is this clockworkmod backup, also backing up all my media files, like pictures, music, videos??

No because teh restore restore teh whole rom not just yoru SMS.
You dont need to backup your contacts etc as they are synced with yoru google acount.
If you want to backup/restore SMS you can use a SMS Backup & Restore
If you want to backup/restore your apps/app data you can use Titanium Backup.
When you install a new ROM your data (photos, ...) won't be touched.
ClockWorkMod will restore the entire ROM.
You have to be careful when restoring SMS'. If your ROM uses another app for messages, it won't be compatible.

Best app for ROM backup/recovery

Hi
I got a cheap LG GT540 a wee while back and now I want to try and install a more recent version of Android (I currently have version 2.1 installed). I think I understand how to do this but the biggest concern I have is that my phone gets bricked and I have to reinstall. The tutorials I have encountered are mostly over a year old and I want to be certain that I can backup the whole image on my phone and recover it. I would be grateful if you could please confirm what the current best ROM Backup/recovery app to do this?
The best way if via Nandroid backups from your recovery.
(On CWM Recovery: Backup&Restore->Backup or Backup&Restore->Restore)
A Nandroid will give you a full image of everything, Titanium Backup will allow you to pick and choose what you do or don't restore. For both you need a rooted device.
Yeah, with Titanium Backup you can backup/restore the apps and settings you want. It´s very useful if you went to another ROM like MIUI or so.
I always use CWM recovery and Titanium Backup. Safe and sound
I just use a nandroid back up.
Titanium back up can extract bits from a nandroid backup as well.
in the play store u can even get apps backing up ur call lists and sms
Thanks everybody for replying.
I had problems trying to backup ROM, got impatient and finally managed to upgrade to CyanogenMod v6. It wasn't the strategy I had in mind but finally got there in the end!!
My Backup Pro is a good application!!
+1 for Titanium Backup
CWM is what I always use.
CWM is the best...
some app can't restored with titanium backup...
I usually just use the Nandroid backup inside CWM.
I am also using titanium backup (paid version), but I am told not to restore the system data of the previous ROM after updated to a new ROM, because the system data of the previous ROM will cause instability to the new ROM.
I am doing automated backups with Titanium (paid version), and I also make nandroid backup every now and then.
Can Anyone give me the .apk link of a backup/restory app? I looked for one in the play store..but they all are paid..I want to root..but dont have a credit card..please help

I'm also using the titanium backup, but you need the pro version to access some features. I'm satisfied with it.
So I must buy it? There is no free rooting and back up/restoring app? Is Titanium the best one?

[Q] Backup before Custom ROM

Hi there,
Sorry if a similar thread has been opened numerous times. But I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.
I rooted my S3 and want to try a couple of ROMs before I decide to settle on one of them.
I had a rom backup using ROM Manager, but I'm guessing that backup includes everything in my current system. I'll keep it, it's good to have an extra backup.
My question is, is there a way for me to have a backup of only some apps and their gallery folders (ie Whatsapp Shared Images folder, Instagram), my contacts and all of my pictures so I can get only the things I want back when I'm trying out new ROMs.
Also, what do you suggest before installing a custom rom? Thanks.

The app part you can do so with titanium backup or some similar 3rd part applications, I am sure they hundreds outta there.
Install new ROM won't affect your sdcard, so the images shared folder is OK, and setting can be restore by titanium backcup
Nothing special to suggest, just remember back up before you do it.

Don't use Rom manager
To back up make a nandroid in recovery
Back up efs with HC-KTOOL
Backup with titanium pro as well
Then make copies of all and duplicate to pc/cloud/etc
Thank you both for the answers. Especially about efs, I had no idea how harmful it was to not have a backup of it.

CWM backups are full Rom backups, hence it restores the full Rom, I guess there is a way to extract certain parts of the backup though. Usually to backup data etc you would use titanium backup, and for contacts it r is easier to sync them to Google.

You can try from recovery restoring Data only but it may not work 100% on a different firmware

Restore your rom. Install titanium backup and backup your data. Your contacts will be resynced from gmail and your photos won't be deleted. I think this is the easiest way.

[Q] Restoring apps and data

Hi
I'm new to rooting and custom roms, so far I've rooted my s3 (i9305) and added a custom recovery. I'm currently looking for a custom rom to update the stock version I'm currently running (4.1.2). I have titanium backup installed and everything is backed up, however many of the posts I've read suggest not to restore apps + data from titanium backup. Can anyone explain why, is it just titanium backup that causes problems? What about using other backup apps like helium? Can I restore just the apps using titanium backup, or should I download from the play store instead?
For me the most important stuff is contacts and calendars (which are in my google account), so that's easy as I just re-add my account. My call logs and SMS are backup to my google account using SMS backup, so I assume it's ok to restore this data as well, I'd also like to be able to restore my firefox data.
Any advice would be appreciated to a noob, I know how to do it, just want to know what the potential risks are of restoring apps and data.
Thanks
Dave
Try app backup and restore if you have a lot of apps it could potentially take up quite a bit of space but you could always backup to cloud ,or external hard drive, or flash drive

It is normally okay for u to restore apps. But not recommended if u are coming from touchwiz to aosp roms. The frameworks are different and u may experience force closes. U can try to see if u have force closes.
