International version of the Lumia 920 on ATT - Nokia Lumia 920

Is anyone here using an international (RM-821) or Roger's version of the Lumia 920 on with ATT with an unlimited non-smartphone data plan?
I know LTE won't work nor am I concerned about it, I'd rather keep my grandfathered non-smartphone data plan.

You won't be able to. AT&T scan the IEMI numbers of phones that are connected to their network. That number tells them the brand, model, and type of phone it is. As soon as they see you have put a smart on their network they will force you to buy a data plan fort that phone. AT&T require all smart phone customers to have a data plan. If you don't they will slap one on you.

They apparently started detecting ALL Lumia 920s a few weeks back according to some postings from users of non-AT&T 920s.
Currently the T-Mobile HTC 8X does not get detected as a smartphone. It's not as nice as the 920 but it's almost as good. Fully supports AT&T 3G with all functions working including tethering on the non-smartphone plan. You can find this for $250-$300 on eBay. Unlocking costs $7.
The Verizon model of the 8X does get detected. It has Qi Wireless charging but MMS doesn't work because of some BS Verizon did to the OS.
Also I have tested the Canadian Samsung ATIV S T899M on AT&T and that also does not get detected and fully supports AT&T 3G also with all functions working including tethering. It has LTE Band 4 but AT&T needs LTE Band 17 for most of its network (a very small amount runs on band 4). LTE doesn't matter if you're using the non-smartphone data plan though because you do not have access to it with that plan. I do not know if the international ATIV S I8750 gets detected or if it is fully compatible. The T899M is around $450.
You won't be able to get a 920 but those two are about as good, and arguably I think the ATIV S is better than the 920. I really like my LTE though so I put it on one of my lines on the non-smartphone plan.

It would seem as if most of T-Mobile's WP's are safe on ATT. I have been using the Lumia 810 for the last 4 months on my data plan without issues although I'd prefer the 920. I guess for the time being I'll stay with the 810, or if I can find a Roger's version of the 920 for a good price I'll take a chance and buy it. Worst case is ATT flags it and I switch to T-Mobile
Has anyone confirmed if the ATT version of the Lumia 920 supports 1700 AWS? Thanks again for the responses.

They WILL catch the Rogers 920.
The AT&T version can be forced to support 1700 AWS 3G by flashing a different ROM. Someone has outlined the steps to do it somewhere in the 920 forum. I think in the development section.
Any reason you really don't want the 8X or the ATIV S? The 8X has limited storage but the ATIV S has microSD, large screen, light body, and removable and larger battery.

Good to know the ATT version can support 1700AWS, something to keep in mind especially since the exclusivity period is almost over.
About the other models you mentioned, I'm not a big fan of HTC phones although the ATIV S is an option. I didn't really know much about it since I am fairly new to WP with the Lumia 810 being my first device. I just happened to chance upon WP when I needed to replace my Nokia N8and got a good deal on the 810 from one of my coworkers who couldn't get the hang of WP.
In all honesty, the Lumia 810 isn't all that bad despite the fact it was EOL'd by T-Mobile after a mere 5 months.

Lumia 800 features and comparisons

I'm looking to buy a Lumia 800, but my carrier AT&T only offers the Lumia 900. So I was wondering...
Does the Lumia 800 have a front facing camera?
Does the it have Internet Sharing enabled? It seems like its a 50/50 deal perusing these forums. So which model does have it?
Does it show up on ATT as a smartphone? I'm looking to not be bullied into the more expensive smartphone plans that ATT forces onto you if you buy a phone they sell.
Of course any comparisons/links to hands on comparisons between the two would be well appreciated.
No front facing camera.
Internet sharing is a little 50/50 since phones that haven't got the update yet don't have it, don't know how it's in the USA.
Most of us that have the Lumia 800 use it on Straight Talk within the US. It runs off of AT&Ts network and is $45/mo (no contract) for unlimited data /talk/message. Internet Sharing works on Straight Talk as well.
The major problem with the Lumia 800/900 right now (for USA users) is that the Network Setup application is not currently available, so we cannot receive/send picture mail. Data works fine though.

Outstanding! Rogers 920 in USA

Rogers 920.
Unlocked, works with AT&T UMTS and LTE, works with T-Mobile AWS UMTS -- no spectrum refarm needed to get 3G on T-Mo.
Unbelievable in a very good way!
Edit: It seems I spoke too soon about successful AT&T tethering. I thought I had it working but I asked AT&T to change my plan to LTE and after that I can't get tethering to work.
I tested the T-Mobile AWS support in a place where I KNOW FOR SURE that there is no refarm. In fact I even verified that by putting my T-Mo SIM in a different phone that has no 1700 band support, and only got Edge. When I put that same SIM in the Rogers 920, I got 3G and 4G.
At my house, the T-Mo refarm is functional so I am not sure which UMTS band my phone is using. But I am getting 9Mbit downloads on T-Mobile at my house. That's faster than AT&T's LTE, which gives me ~8Mbit on the same Rogers 920.

How'd you get it unlocked, if you don't mind me asking. I will be getting the phone soon and would like to unlock it.
Rogers also doesn't have that horrible branding on the top either? Just the Nokia logo?
Where are you guys buying it from? Is there an XDA member who is willing to pick these up?
My blood is pounding. Seems other sites are reporting it as well. I can TASTE this phone.

I find that hard to believe, as everyone including myself have reported that it is not working. Can you post screenshots and then explain what you did?
Here ya go.
First pic shows the 920 with sharing on, and one guest connected.
Second pic shows a client device connected.
Third pic proves that the client device is actually accessing the 'net via the first device.
As far as what I did -- nothing special. Maybe my account allows tethering and other folks' accounts don't? Note that I was unable to get tethering working on AT&T (kept getting message about there not being any cellular connection to available to share).
The more awesome is the fact that it supports LTE at 1700/2100 and Lumia 920 LTE runs at 100Mbps.
1700/2100 is were T-Mobile USA is launching their LTE network and as they promise, it will deliver theoretical speeds of 100Mbps from day one.
In simple English this means that when their LTE network goes live next year this Lumia 920 will be able to work on it!
Amazing !!
Second
For those of you that do not want any kind of branding on their phones, like me, Nokia handle the exact same phone to developers in Build 2012, unlocked and unbranded.

Hopefully this variant will make it in retail stores, maybe Microsoft Stores. This will be the smartest move to make.

I am trying to investigate why tethering is not working in Canada. First thought is apn related. Did you manually edit your apn, or was it programmed in your sim, resulting in plug and play?

[Q] AT&T 920 on T-Mobile with 3G?

I've had an HTC HD7 on T-Mobile for a good solid three years now, but it has become outdated and I need a new phone.
All the Windows Phones on T-Mobile are very crappy (in my opinion) and the phone I would love to have would be the Lumia 920.
My only problem is, it doesn't exist. My question is: If I were to buy a Lumia 920 locked to AT&T off of eBay, then get an unlock code, would it be possible to have it running with at least 3G speeds? All the radio frequencies point to yes, but I would like to check here first.
Thanks!

if you read around, all at&t lumias 820 & 920 are locked. there is a rare rare chance of getting an unlock code from AT&T. All the sites in the web are scams. It would be better to buy a Rogers Unlocked 920 because: 1. they have the same antennas as AT&T, some say the phones are pentaband and 2. they are already unlocked.
or get an international unlocked. some reports stated you can flash the firmware from other countries and get AWS.
Long story short, unless you want straight talk which is powered by AT&T, you wont have a good chance of getting an AT&T lumia sim unlocked
hope i am wrong. working on getting a code or two time will tell

Bought mine at canadagsm.ca and had it in my hands 3 days later in Miami. And, so far is the best phone I've owned. It is a pentaband so it will work with T-MOBILE. Also, I have none of the problems others are mentionning on this forum (dust in front of the FFC, etc ...).
SO, I'm very satisfied !!!
Realized that there are two threads...I'm pasting my reply here and requesting the other to be deleted.

I'm on T-Mobile as well. I ended up purchasing a Lumia 920 international unlocked (Polish variant). The international variant uses the same 3G frequency as the AT&T variant (1900 MHz 3G).
T-Mobile has been refarming their network and they are now running 3G on 1900 MHz as well, in addition to the original 1700 MHz.
If you're in the Mill Creek, WA area, I can't tell you how the 1900 MHz 3G network performs since I'm not in that area. However, I live in Bellevue, go to UW and work in Shoreline and 3G coverage on the 1900 MHz network has been pretty good. At UW, I can get anywhere between 7-15 Mbit/sec.
To answer your question, yes an AT&T version will have 3G on T-Mobile's network, but only if you're in an area that has received refarming.
Hope this helps. Feel free to send any more questions my way!

This is true. Do NOT give your money to any site claiming to unlock the AT&T 920. It will only be possible for those sites to do so after May 9th, and then still only buy it from reputable sites!
The ONLY way to unlock an AT&T 920 is if you're an AT&T customer and push really hard with the customer support. It might also be only customers with accounts on business discounts (tied to your work email) that are able to get it. I get premier business customer support when I call in to AT&T and I even had to argue on the phone for 60 minutes in total with all the reps I talked to before I was able to get them to submit an unlock request.

Can someone help me find a lumia 920?

Hi all,
I see a few threads about folks trying to make lumia 920 work on Tmobile USA and I see some talk about quadband vs pentaband, which I am unable to follow. I am planning to buy an unlocked lumia 920 from expansys. I see they are selling unlocked lumia 920 for 450$ and for 550$. I am not sure what the difference is. Can the experts here take a look at the below links and let me know what the difference between the 2 models are and which one would work on Tmobile USA 3g and 4g bandwidths?

Hi,
Well, I am not an expert but here's my two cents:
Quadband vs Pentaband refers to the bands the phone can work on. If you go to the technical specs on the pages you posted, you'll see this:
Network: GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900; HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100...which means that the phone has 4 (hence 'quad') bands in both GSM and HSDPA. In the case of a pentaband HSDPA, it also includes a fifth (and for you very important) band -1700 MHz.
Your last (and most expensive) option should work for sure, since it is a pentaband Rogers-branded model, even though the technical specifications do not mention the 1700 MHz frequency which is one of the two T-Mobile uses (the other one being 2100). But other vendors, including the one I've purchased my 2 Rogers-branded 920s from, do not list this frequency either, since they just take the info from one source and never bother to correct it when wrong.
The other (cheaper) options are most likely the ATT version, which does not have the 1700 MHz band, but technically can be flashed to Rogers and unlock this band (there's lots of info on this forum on how to do it). There's always a risk to brick the phone (render it unusable), but it's minimal. I guess it depends on your risk-management level, whether you feel comfortable enough to save $220 and carry all the process of flashing the phone, or shell out the full amount and have it working out of the box.
There's also the possibility that the cheaper ones do work on your area without flashing, depending on whether T-Mobile has already deployed the 1900 MHz band:
From: http://explore.t-mobile.com/phone-sim-card#faq
Will non-T-Mobile phones without the AWS 1700/2100 band not work on T-Mobile's 3G / 4G network?
A: T-Mobile provides 4G data services nationwide on the AWS 1700/2100 bands, and is in the process of adding service on the PCS 1900 band. Today, phones with both AWS 1700/2100 bands (not just one or the other) work nationwide on T-Mobile’s 4G network. PCS 1900 band phones (sold by AT&T and others) work on the T-Mobile 4G network in cities where 1900 service has been added. Check with your local T-Mobile store or call customer service to learn about the network status in your area.
You could also buy it from another place, more reasonably priced. This is where I bought my first one in December, and my second one a couple of weeks ago when I lost my first one Mind you, I did not buy either online, but actually went to their retail store to get them. Some people tend to think that they have a bad reputation, but my experience has been quite satisfactory (I bought the first one locked for $500, and they sold me the second one unlocked for the same price, virtually unlocking it for free). I do not know if they ship to the US, and if so, how much it costs but you could try contacting them... The downside is that they only have black. Here's the links:
$499: http://canadagsm.ca/NOKIA/Nokia-Lumia-920-Unlocked-Penta-band-lte/
$550: http://canadagsm.ca/NOKIA/Nokia-Lumia-920-LTE-Windows-8-Rogers/
You could buy the locked one and order an unlock code for about $15 on sites like cellunlocker.net
Attached is a pic of the box to show you that it does have the 1700 MHz frequency...

Thanks Abelitin for the detailed response. Appreciate your help!
I did go through some threads in this forum and it appears that flashing an Rogers version onto an unlocked ATT 920 involves so many steps that I got confused. Also I think there was one more thread about Nokia locking out the "navifirm" software that people use to get the different carrier versions.
In any case, after searching quite a bit, the cheapest I have found was in Negrielectronics and they are selling the Rogers version for 450 - 530$ range. Even ATT unlocked versions seem to fall in the same price range. So I might as well get the Rogers version.

Glad to help...
The cheapest variants on that website do no specify if they are Rogers, but the tech specs do mention they have the 1700 MHz band, so you should be ok.
Nokia did close access through Navifirm, but apparently it is still possible to flash using Nokia Care Suite, as per the post below...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40988591&postcount=8
It is a simple but risky process, so if negrielectronics is selling an unlocked pentaband version for $450, that is the best option, imho.
Good luck in your quest. It's a great phone... You won't regret having purchased it! (Incidentally, my carrier also works on the 1700-2100 MHz frequencies. I was waiting for last September's iphone release, hoping it would add the 1700 band, but it didn't, so I then decided to get another Nokia (had had a 5230 for 1 1/2 years) and went for the Lumia 920. The very same day I lost it, Apple came out with a new version of the iphone 5 that does support the 1700 (therefore, it also works on T-Mobile), but now there is no way I go the iphone road, so I got another L920!)

Universal phone? Verizon and T-mobile?

Hi, im looking for a phone which would work with both verizon and T-mobile. Why both? well im in an odd situation, where im halfway through my contract with verizon, but want to switch to T-mobile. But my phone right now barely even works at the moment, so i need a new one, which I can bring over with me when i switch to T-mobile
I need a phone which works on both carriers or else I will end up buying to phones at full price, and I wouldnt want to do that!. Any help wpuld be extremely appreciated, there has to be some kind of smartphone out there thats capable of this

A lot of phones these days are tri/quad-band. This means they operate on 3 or 4 frequencies ranges.
I'm not from the US so I'm not 100% sure but I believe Verizon is a CDMA based network while T-Mobile uses GSM (or WCDMA).
This would mean that most phones cannot be taken from one to the other. However many newer phones are released in carrier specific versions but don't have any hardware differences. Its often very hard to test/confirm this without having the specific device in your hand.
Google suggests that the iPhone 5, 5C & 5S from Verizon is unlocked and works on T-Mobiles 3G & 4G networks. So this could be an option.
As far as android handsets go, most of the phones I can find dont have a good overlap of frequencies for both networks.
Using the LG G2 as an example, the T-Mobile versions of most handsets use 850/1700/1900/2100 for 3G and LTE Bands 2, 4, 17. Verizon uses 850/900/1900/2100 for 3G and LTE Bands 4, 13. There is a little overlap there, 3G @ 850, 900 & 2100, but the LTE coverage is limited to Band 4 which could result in some negative experiences coverage wise on T-Mobile.
