[Q] Galaxy S3 Sudden Death Syndrome - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
My rooted phone has experienced Sudden Death Syndrome. I've taken it back to a Samsung Service Centre and they want to charge me £174 to repair, because it's been rooted.
Is there anything I can do about this, or just pay the £174? I'll always have a sour taste at the back of my mouth about Samsung if I do end up having to pay this
Thanks in advanced, Stephen

Wrong forums friend, you posted in the Verizon GSIII (sch-i535) forums. Judging by your use of the euro, you need the i9300 forums:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1563
I'll see if I can get a mod to move this thread for ya.

Take it again , and play dumb. This is the only way ... Its not stealing or lieing because its samsung's fault with their crappy kernels Say that your phone suddenly lagged , and turned off and wont turn on anymore ... Dont mention the rooting/custom mod stuff because they wont be able to detect they'll just replace the motherboard. Good luck

Voila....Nice work..People just dont learn...First of all,I am sorry if i sound rude
Good work bricking your phone with ROM MANAGER..ROM Manager DOES NOT support ACE...There has been many posts regarding this but PEOPLE dont learn,do they..
Theres no rescue...A brick with rom manager is irrepairable..Some people were lucky though, they could get into download mode, but sadly, you are not...
Take it to your nearest service center
EDIT:I forgot to tell...THIS IS DEVELOPMENT THREAD NOT BRICK THREAD..GENERAL FORUMS IS THE BRICK THREAD
don't panic, mate. try to use a USB Jig first; DIY if deemed necessary! then if all goes well, then flash away
did you try this?

Btw its should not in dev section
dont mess your phone much
you not read noob guid as rom manager brick ace if you run stock rom without cwm
anyway go to service centre tell its not turn on after factory reset
most of us get it live back from service centre but dont tell you use root or any thing
just tell its happen after factory reset

I agree!! I hard bricked my Ace once.. and nothing switched on. So all i did was take it to the service center, with a sad face and tell them that it suddenly switched off and stopped working.
When they asked what i was doing i simply said i was playing a game and it stopped. What is the game? NFS Shift (coz its quite laggy anyway)
And all they said was ''Alright sir, its a hardware faliure, i think its a motherboard short. We will have it replaced. Will have it for you in three working days.''
Act noobish and DONT say anything Smart!
They have no way of checking for Root/custom roms coz it wont switch on
***IMPORTANT - retain sad face until you exit service center! then go to the middle of the road and jump for joy (yes i did)

No they didn't charged me......my ace was bricked due to rom manager......they changed my phones motherboard ........I told them I was playing suddenly screen went off.......
$π®@£
I Will Not Charge You for pressing thanks.
I too fell in the trap of Rom Manager. I wasn't aware of the fact that ACE is not supported by ROM MANAGER.
I have been trying all methods // Download mode, Button combinations... Odin did recofnize it once but was stuck on 'set connection'... so I tried it again, but it didnt recognize it again.
Hence, now I am forced to take it to Service Centre. Would post my experice too once my ACE returns...
Thanks for the post guys.. this thread really helped..
Cheers !!

Lol, with me was easier, after two days that I had bought my Ace, I updated it to an europe Gingerbread firmware, but my Ace is a brazilian model, so, a few things started to happen, screen flickering, random shutdowns, 3G wasn't working. All I did was taking my phone back to my carrier store (the place where I bought the phone) and I told that the screen was flickering a lot. I wasn't into Android on that time, I really thought it was broken.
The phone was completely stock, the carrier customizations weren't there anymore, the language wasn't the right one. The girl who was helping noticed that my phone was a bit different from the others, but she said "no problem, we will send it back to Samsung" and then she gave me a new phone with the box and everything. Lol.

A friend of mine did that. He broke the mic on his phone with compressed air... Then he hardbricked his phone (i think it was LG optimus 2X, but maybe something else) and paid a little extra for SGS2.
Edit: I've installed dozens of custom roms and tweaks on my ACE. Never have i even gotten a bootloop (i've had some on other phones).. The main thing is to FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS and if there arent any than you should google a bit to find out if what you want to do works or not.

[Q] HELP - Have I really hard-bricked my S2?!

I'm not the first to ask this, I know, but the circumstances are very strange and I'm very desperate:
I've been running stock ICS (LPB) for while now and have not changed anything significant recently. Last night, I was reading a book on Google Play Books when the phone suddenly rebooted to the Samsung splash screen but no further. I took out the battery and attempted to restart and nothing. It will not charge, switch on, or enter download mode or recovery. I've tried it with another battery.
I thought these S2's were supposed to be virtually impossible to "hard brick" unless you did something really stupid? I can't find anyone who this has happened to while in normal use of the phone.
Any suggestions or am I really looking at sending the phone back to Samsung (who probably won't repair under warranty)?
Anyone who helps me fix it myself without the aid of Samsung or a jig will be rewarded!
TIA,
Dave
Contact Samsung. If your phone isn't responding to a battery you know is working and has charge, and you're not interested in using a jig (unlikely to do anything anyway), it's a hardware fault.
Dude calm down your phone will be repaired . When it comes to warranty i cant really comment on it as ur live in UK , in India the service center guys dont even know what the f**k ROOT is.

As said no jig = Samsung and take your chance with warranty . No point asking XDA who will say use jig to get to download mode if possible as its the cheapest repair .##

Sadly this is the only conclusion I can come to but I guess I'm just in denial and trying to find any way to avoid sending it back to Samsung for 2-3 weeks!
If it had only held out until they released the S3, it wouldn't be so bad!

hardware; probably charge controller is fried, go to samsung customer center or call and they will fix it; you probably wont even have any personal files missing
Thanks people. Found a Samsung Service Centre near me with a turnaround of 1-2 days so not too bad after all...providing they don't notice my download counter!

How to know if the MoBo is bricked

Hi!
Sorry for asking again - i had another thread about this subject before thinking this solution to my problem, I think the situation and the question is different, so that0s why I thought, opening a new thread was correct
What happened is that I was enjoying my SGSII with CM 10 and one day it just shut down
I only could enter download mode: When flashing with Odin, Odin would hung and the flashing process never would start.
Finally I tried to flash official 4.0.4 with the repartition option checked.
No download mode no more either....
Needless to say, I got a brick.
Now: Samsung refuses to repair it with the warranty and some online shop says they can repair just the memory module and not all the motherboard: I don't know if the motherboard was broken either.....
The thing is that I wish I knew if the MoBo was the problem before sending the device over to the online shop and getting it back not repaired again... having to pay for the delivery... perhaps for samsung it's easier to just replace all the inside instead of only one compound.... I don't know that....
How can I know if the problem is not the whole motherboard?
Thanks

I had the same problem not caused by cm but just trying to ged rid of jellybean, no boot, no download, no recovery and not charging anymore
i tought i was screwed by odin because this caused the problem ( also ticked repartition ) brought it to a shop that actually repairs damaged screens and after a couple of days got my phone back with still everything on there wat was on my phone before i bricked it.
Had to pay € 45,- so to me next to nothing compared to bying a new phone.
Well, that's a relieve... I mean, if the Motherboard were broken, I wouldn't even get to download mode... it clearly looked like the fash memory failed.... I hope this guys are right and I can get my phone back..
I need to say Samsungś service sucks!!!! Despite of not being covered by warranty, they had my phone, and i quote "LOST" for almost two months....
I'll update as I get the phone repaired....
Thats why it diddent even cross my mind tpo bring it to a samsung service center, it probally takes a lot longer to get the job done and they would for sure replace the mobo and then say it was broken because i flashed it with a custom firmware, like that wil break the device, morons
So to make sure it was done fast and the proper way i took it to flexiphone and sved my selfe the trouble of getting a lot of bull**** an probally a
high amount of money to pay (because of a warranty void) for a repair that never needed to be done in the first place.
Hope your device has the same problem cause i was depressed missing my righthand, but went home with a smile from ear to ear.
OK, got the phone back, took it to a shop and they say it's not responding to JTAG.....
They will try something else, but it does not look well....
if it's not jtagable then mobo replacement is your only chance to see the little guy booting again.

Ok, I've got a bricked MoBo....
How much would it be to get a new one? I guess it won't be less than 200 euro.... or perhaps new phone directly...
I guess It's goodbye..... farewell, SGSII.... :crying:
Mobo is about 150 - 200.

Orange were selling S2 for about 240 €(or whatever equates to £200) 3 months ago.
Id sell your phone on ebay as you should get at least £100 clear, then that means you could get a brand new phone with warranty for £100 difference, or maybe a good bit less.
Nexus 4 it is!!!

[Q] gt19300 wifi HARDWARE problems

hi all,
this is my first post here, the noob video did cheer me up alot after the day ive had...
around a month ago, my phone started to have problems connecting to wifi, the problem occurs when making a connection to ANY ROUTER USING ANY KIND OF SECURITY,the phone comes back stating "authentication error", yet when i connect it to my motorola xoom tablet (set to mobile hotspot) the phone connects and functions great!?
now for my question,
samsung have voided my warranty as i flashed the software on the phone (as some asshole at the samsung call centre asked me to do,said the warranty would be ok as long as its the genuine software....what a load of rubbish that turned out to be) i have not rooted it,and they are quoting me in the vacinity of $250 us to fix it (w##kers) ,its a longshot but,can any of tell if this is a firmware problem rather than a hardware problem? it seems to me like its along the lines of firmware, as it works in only the one instance connected to my tablet..i know i did get an update from my phone company and it stopped working shortly after then...theoretically if it is just a firmware issue i could pick up on how to do the jtag trick and try and reload the firmware myself? instead of pay the same jerk who screwed me to fix it in the first place?
have any of you had your phone into samsung for the same problem? though a good search turns up many stories on power save mode etc, no one seems to have the same problem i do...HELP!!!
the other way is i guess to do a pcb swap, but i dont know how many of these are available...
i know nothing about what you all do, i am an electrical engineer with a big background in industrial electronics and computers and the last thing i want to do is spend what little free time i have modding my phone, i dont have anything against anyone who does, its just that valve amps and vinyl do alot more for me than the new stuff does...BUT if i need to do something out of nessecity, then id love to learn a few tricks you gurus could teach me to save my skin, who knows, i might be able to offer you some advice one day!!
after 4 weeks searching and reading this site amoung others,i have tried EVERYTHING software wise to rectify the problem,
samsung are not telling me what exactly the fault is and are using my flashing of the standard software as a scapegoat to say ive tamered with it.
samsung nz are a bunch of scam artists who ill never again trust with a dime of my hard earned cash and thats all i have to say about that....will be taking them to court (new zealand has a consumer rights guarantee system so their warranty does not mean jack but they still refuse to repair it)
thank you in advance for any help you can offer, i am at my wits end and regret stepping into the "smartphone" world!!!

No root and stock firmware flashed does not void warranty .
Wifi is generally a kernel problem you can try flashing a stock firmware from here or sammobile.com.
As you mention dimes and dollars do you actually have a I9300 ??? as flash I9300 firmware on a non I9300 will brick your phone.

You need to argue the case that the Samsung call centre told you to carry out steps xyz .
Alternative paid for repair then complain to Samsung re call centre .
You can try arguing the EU regulations as referred to on XDA by Adam Outler .
However does any EU legislation have similar in new Zealand .
What firmware and root is on your phone that Samsung said to flash .

they arent saying anything of the details of the rom, but i flashed a genuine 2 degrees (phone company) software, but they could have changed it themselfs?
i have argued with them to my wits end about the law etc but they are not taking it on board, so im asking for the phone to be returned to me, then ill take them to court...paying to get it done then complaining wont work in a legal sense, as by paying, they see it as though im agreeing to it all...
i do know this however, if i do fix it myself ill post a fix incase it happens to any one else...

[Q] [PROBLEM] Mainboard of SGS2 isn't working (fried?)

Hi everyone,
I'm writing here cause I've got a really big problem with my lovely Samsung Galaxy S II: the mainboard stopped working.
The really big problem is that I don't know the real problem.
I have two SGS2, one black and one white. The one with motherboard issues is the black one.
I've tried to put the black's motherboard in the white phone but the phone doesn't turn on, neither with a full charged battery (I have something like 4 or 5 batteries for my Galaxys, so i'm really sure that isn't a battery problem) and neither with the usb jig (again, I'm sure that the jig works cause I've tried it on the white one and it works).
I've also tried to put the white's motherboard into the black phone and everything works well, so the black phone's mainboard is broken.
Here comes the problem: I don't know what it happened to the mainboard to break, the last time I saw my phone alive was when I looked at the time on the phone (I mean lockscreen, you know) and after I looked at it it turned off and never woke up (turn on).
Since my hardware skills are quitly good I tried to have a look at the mainboard itself, but it doesn't look damaged in any way, neither fired.
My first worry is about data, I've did a full backup of my phone 2 or 3 days past the damage but I wanna try to recover the latest data that are still stored on my phone.
I've also thought about order a new motherboard from ebay, but the data is still on the broken one, so it will be unuseful.
I attached to this post also 2 photos of the "broken" mainboard (front and rear, taken with my other Galaxy S2)
Any help will be appriced
Thank you in advance guys, I hope to recover data / fix my phone!
Couple of things:
1) This belongs in Q&A
2) What ROM where you on at the time it went off? What kernel?
3) You could try jTAG, 25-50 bucks.
4) The reason why it would be a guessing game, maybe some nasty Sleep Of Death, like those happening with the SIII.
5) Ask the mods to move this thread.
Sent from the little guy
Thank you gastonw!
I read about the JTAG but didn't understood if I only need the JTAG itself (I mean, this => h t t p : / / w w w . gsm-technology .com/multicom/pimg/sam_i9100_400B.jpg ), or if I also need the RiffBox (what's the difference?)
Anyway, when it turned off the ROM on the phone was CyanogenMod 10.1 - 20130703 - NIGHTLY (obviously i9100)
Sleep of Death? I read about this, and the problem is: how can I determinate if the phone wakes up when I insert battery and Jig? I tought to use a voltmeter, but I really don't know where to place to avoid also short circuits.
About the thing to move the thread, yeah, sorry, I noticed just after I created the post. So, If any mod would read this, please move to Q&A
You can do both as you know your hardware.
Of course the smart choice here is to pay for the service instead of becoming the service by purxhacing the riffbox.
Before you do that hit the download combo without the battery (ask for an extra hand) and re insert it while your still hitting it.
When you plug it, does it get hot near the camera?

Again, thank you gastonw! I tried todo the download combo (VOL DOWN + POWER + HOME) while inserting the battery and nothing happened, near the camera the temperature is the same as before.
Anyway I still didn't understood a thing: could the JTAG operate itself or I need also to buy the Riffbox?
jtag is the service the riffbox (and such) provides.

I ordered a Riffbox from Ebay (fonefunshop, an official reseller).
I didn't wanted to pay for a service like "send your phone and we'll revive it" because I don't trust them and I don't want my data to be see from others.
Thank you for your support gastonw, I'll let you know when the RiffBox arrives if it works
Please do, if you can get the hang of it you will be able to help other people plus -maybe- get a buck or two
