[Q] Vibration not working - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I think my vibration motor is broke, or badly plugged into the board. Is there any way to easily check the vibration motor without violating the warranty? (well, I don't know if the device gets disassambled it looses the warranty, I don't see any labels) Better buy a new vibration motor for $1.75 and pay some bucks to some shop to put it, or send it to customer assistaince and wait maybe a whole month? Vibration is quite essential, when I'm in a loud place where I can't listen the ringtone (and I might even not listen the person talking to me on the phone, but that ain't the case)
Please, if you have any ideas for me, thank you.

this may be stupid but have you checked it in settings to set the vibration settings to max (i freaked out once about it only to realize i set the vibration to low :silly
you could pay some bucks or wait for a month. if you really do need your phone for daily usage, i suggest you send it to a shop.... or maybe do some experiments? :silly: just kidding hehe

Vibration is on max... I even asked AndreiLux to put an option to overpower the vibrator, but no answer. I gave my phone some slaps to make it work, well, it worked, and after a while, I gave it another slap and it worked much better... but then, like any human, I gave it another slap and it definately stopped working.

vibrating alert

I took my ameo apart the other day to fix a speaker and noticed that it had i slot for a vibrating alert. so I took apart my old dead o2 xda ii and the motor fitted in perfectly, trouble is the ameo has no software to switch it on so its useless on the whole. does anyone know of a way to add this missing software? as it is built into the rom it would be hard to add seeing how its never had one anyway.

This was brought up in a previous thread. But i've seen in the past something that enabled you to change profile, with the option to turn vibrate on adn off. I can't remember where I seen it though. Do a search maybe you'll come up luckier than me.
Hi, perhaps it can help : some skins of WISBAR Advance show the option.
But this doesn't mean it can really activate it...
its strange, its all setup for the motor inside, its as if they changed there mind last moment. it would be handy in my job to have it working, I guess the only real way is to take the software out of another rom with one and install it into the athena rom. i will keep searching.

wisebar is just the wallpaper for the real software behind I think, I dont think it is much trouble to add the button but its the rest. just because the slot and track is there, maybe some of the components are missing also. But im guessing here
Maybe vibrating alarm and the built-in microdrive won't like each other ?

I think that that is the most likely answer. I'm sure it would be OK at first but could damage things in the end,
I also remember reading about this somewhere. Seems like someone said vibrate was going to be incorporated, but was not because of the microdrive. I saw a vibrating motor that was only 3mm x 11mm. Maybe less vibrate would have less effect on the drive. Software though, hmmmmmmmm.......

The Better solution and answer provided some time ago was to make a recording of another device vibrating (i.e.: sitting on a desk or table) then using that audio file as the ringtone. It won't shake the innards of your Athena and if anyone in a meeting or where ever hears it, they wouldn't likely know the difference.

I just don't understand people who say the vibrating sound thing is a solution. If the pda is in your pocket, how does the vibrate sound let you know you have a call. You do not even hear it. It is the actual vibration that would let you know you have a call. i would give up the microdrive in a second for a real vibrate mode!
And besides hearing a vibrating phone in a meeting is just as bad as hearing it ring. So the idea would be to notify you that you have a call and others would not hear it.

If you are putting Athena in your pocket, you must be a BIG person or wear oversized clothes. IMHO Athean is not a pocket device (too big), but having the sound of a vibrating phone with the volume towards low is only audible very near the device. I would agree with your comment on being annoying if it were on loud. Perhaps those who absolutely want to vibrate should look towards the X7510 which has the 16GB flash instead of uDrive, and work on the hack to make it available as a ring setting.
Try to use standard HTC Home - it has possibility to choose vibra tone ( but I'm not shure if it send signal to vibra)

As it happens, I'm 6 foot 3 and weigh around 23 stone (325 lbs) so i meet both of those criteria. I have no problem with fitting this thing in my pocket.
Still, i don't do it cos i don't want to forget it's in there and crack the screen if i sit on it! Personally, vibration is not a problem for me, cos if I'm in a meeting or somewhere I can't answer the phone, i put it on silent and deal with everything afterwards.
Just because I CAN be contacted at any time on my mobile, doesn't necessarily mean that I WANT to be contacted.....
off topic :Woot! 100 posts.....
I almost posted this yesterday and didn't, but I feel the need to back up eagle 1. A recording of a vibrating phone is not a solution. I need vibrate here: in the car with the radio turned up, in a meeting, in a movie or performance theater. A quiet buzzing recording will be missed every time. There are times when I must be available, like when the kids are home with a babysitter.
The fact that HTC designed vibrate into our phones and then left it out is a real shame. I too would have given up the MD to get vibrate.
The Athena fit's quite nicely in my suite jacket pocket, or, indeed, the inside pocket of my leather jacket - either way, when I'm out I often can't hear the ring but would be able to feel a vibrate.
Ok Guys, based on your scenarios, here are some vibrating bluetooth options.
http://www.netpcdirect.co.uk/bluetooth_vibrating_bracelet.php
Bracelet, watch, wear it while driving, in a meeting, at the movies. . . . .
And if you don't want to tie up yout bluetooth, there is this gizmo:

Actually the Athena fits pretty good in a coat pocket and even better if you ditch the keyboard and cover. When I am out I do this along with carrying the Style-i.
raskell - that's why I bought the Jabra BT8010 which has vibrate, although the motor is so small I sometimes miss it when its in the pocket of my jeans. Not as good as an industrial-strength vibrate would have been built-in to the Athena.
Hey, the more vibrating accessories you can get, the better your chance of not missing a call!
I would suggest making a Mortscript with a vibrate command. I'm not sure what component Mortscript relies on to vibrate but it seems it's incorporated into itself.
Now, my question is did you see any place to slip in an earpiece?

Does anyone know how to remove the call connection vibrate???????????

The phone vibrates a little bit when someone answers the other end. Does anyone know how to get shot of this as it's doing my head in!!!!! Been thru settings and can't see anything in there reference it. HHHHEEEEELLLLLPPPP.
I thought this was one of the nicest features I've seen on a phone.
maybe it stops if you use more exclamation and question marks in your posts.
Why would you wanna lose this option?
During connecting a call the radiation of the phone is the highest.
At the time the connection is made it's way lower (just listen to you're stereo when you're making and having a call sounds worse during the first 10 sec, before you answer)
Radiation does damage, so it's better to hold te phone to your ear when the connection is made. This way you know when you're connected.
Very cool option, wouldn't want to lose it
@Kendong2 - Don't be a *****. Play nice!
@Stafflover - Thanks for the information, I do hold the phone to my ear and the phone vibrates when the person the other end answers. Should the phone not be vibrating like? Cheers

The vibration is there so you don't need to hold the phone to your ear when it's most ''harmfull''
As i said, when you dail a number, making the connection sends out the most radiation. When you have a connection (after the vibrating) radiation is way lower (so more safe)
@stafflover
Again thank you for the information much appreciated. It just would be nice though for me to make my own decision with regards to the phone if you know what I mean. I am well chuffed with the phone, only had it a few days and still getting to grips with it. Thanks again.
yes understand, but I had several phones who had this function, never found a way to turn it of (maybe some of the cookers know how to remove it)
@stafflover
Yeh, I suppose so. To be honest now that you have pointed out the relevance of such a function it kinda makes perfect sense, certainly for health and safety reasons. To be fair the vibrate aint that bad if I don't put the handset to my ear until the phone has vibrated in my hand, basically using it for what it's there for. Many thanks Stafflover for the kind information, most appreciated.

[Q] had the phone for 10 minutes, speaker croaked

Hello, I have a US tmobile HD2. I picked it up used, heard the new voicemail notification chime when I put my sim in... everything seemed fine, gave him the money and went back to work
playing with it, decided I wanted to watch a youtube video and the sound stopped. I did a hard reset, still no sound. I can talk on the phone, but the big speaker doesn't work for some reason.
The warranty it seems isn't valid unless submitted through him, I asked the guy if I could convince him to try to send in. In case that is a no-go, it's out of pocket for HTC unless its an easy fix for me.
What I do know, it detects when I plug in and remove an external speaker. Sound works through an external speaker. Every volume setting I can find is at maximum.
Does anyone have any suggestions, if its just the speaker, can I find a replacement? Any guess what it would cost for the pros to look at it? I saw the disassembly video and it looks right under the cover. Also, would anyone know a good way to test the speaker itself?
it is still under manufacturers warranty, speak to t mo, if they wont help, speak to htc.
warranty is bound to the original phone service it was sold to (previous owner), so the only way to get tmo to fix or replace it would be through him. I asked him, 50/50 chance he goes for it.
tmo gave me the htc number, i may try that next, just afraid I will have to shell out a wad of cash that will exceed the price of a new phone.
Thats retailer warranty, all electrical manufacturers must provide a 1 year warranty at minimum, regardless of the retailer, so yea, get on to htc.

[Q] speaker broken (not the audio one)

sorry to bother evryone but i cant find any topics seeing i dont know how to translate it.
i only get speaker (music) finds
so my speaker broke about 1 month ago . the one used for calling .
i went to get it repaired and was fixed.
now 3weeks later the same thing is happening.
distortion sound .
now i payed 50 euros for the first repair wich is still under warrenty .
but i want to know how this can happen . i dont drop my phone or cause it damg. in any way . always in a cover to prevent dirt etc piling up.
and i would rather not go back to get it fixed again for it to brake again in a matter of weeks.
especially since the guy that fixed it left his mark on my phone (toolmarks, bits broken of the corners of the frame etc.)
thnx in advance

There might be bad connection on pcb, it causes that volume is not so strong and sound has sometimes mixed channels. Maybe this could be the problem. But dont know how that guy solved it - maybe with some externeal soldering. I am also imaging about two other another problems, but Its really hard to say it without internal look. Sorry

WTF who was he? 50€ for THAT repair??? Personally I will kill him by my own phone after that looking "repair" for so huge price... He probably dontknow anything about opening plastic cases with special tools, even they cost only about 2€ on ebay...
Sorry for little OT, but must say it, because I am also servicing phones notebooks and so on... And these "repairmans" or "repair services" makes me really angry...
i agree on off topic
anyways thnx for you're reply, all he did actually was replace it and i dont even know if it was an original part (color differences from original)
so i can tell that it has bin replaced and the sound was alot better
it kinda sounds like your using a tiny speaker on to loud volume i suppose, and decreasing volume isnt helping.(crackling sound, distortion thats all i can come up with)
for now its doable i can still understand people (alot better then last time)
and it might be me but i feel like using another rom ferals now actually makes it sound a bit better (i could be wrong hard to test)
and i also didnt mention last time that on the audio speakers theres no problem .
arent they the same part ? i looked on the web and it looks like an L-shaped part that seem to match both speaker positions.
Thnx has bin pressed ofc.

[Q] [Advice] Galaxy SIII completely dead?

Guys I owned a Galaxy SIII white GT-19300... had it for 3-4 months, bought it brand new. used really carefully, only had one or two falls that's it.
Finally it decided to crap all of a sudden like it had a silent heart attack, just a couple of hours ago. It wasn't charging or was in process of updating or anything. Just that I was sitting and having a sms conversation where in the middle it just won't budge at all. It just went completely pulseless.
These are the symptoms:
-No display
-Won't power up by any means
-No charging light
-No sign of booting up
What I tried:
-Hard reset
-Remove SIM and SD card, still no activity
-Swapped battery of working S3
What should be the next step?. Thankfully warranty period hasn't elapsed yet.
How should I approach now?. Will the warranty company replace the set or more likely create some unsolvable obstacles, like them assuming fall or label the phone rooted etc?
Thanks for your time

Warrant may be void if its rooted or custom rom or modified status or rom counter above zero .
No way to reset those on a non booting phone .
Dropped damage incurred again who knows until they take the phone apart .

If the phone's truly hard-bricked, there's no way the service center would be able to discern that. Dead is dead.
Agreed, if the phone is truly dead no one in the sammy repair could able to detect that.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree, just because the power port has died, by no means means the memory/storage, or anything else for that matter really is down.. (not that it'll come up, just making a point)
it sounds like you really did everything right to troubleshoot it huh.. well let me just throw a few things out, you probably didnt, but hopefully did overlook..
the cord you're trying to charge it with, could it be not working/charging it?
have you tried another cord, or maybe even a USB cord? was it plugged in when it died? some low quality/defective cords can have some weird effects on phones, like less responsive digitizers, or even short out a phone
did you have any custom CPU settings? over/under clock/volt? had you played with you min/max CPU settings?
it doesn't turn on, did you determin this by seeing no display? seeing if there's any hapticfeedback, or even calling it from another phone and seeing if it rings on the callers side.
I know it seems silly but I'm just throwing out things from personal expirence ..
so now your phone really is dead, well having it under warrenty is great. having worked at an AT&T corporate retailer, I can tell you what happens on our side when you bring in a damaged phone.. well try it ourselves, well ask what happened, if you don't know well ask things like, 'did you drop it', 'or it was in contact with water'. (were actually required to ask, since these things aren't covered under warranty. which let me say, is so broken that we push the extended warranty on you, because it covers basically nothing.. we have a quota that says we need to sell X amount of a list of product/services each month.. but I digress).. anyway, once you tell us it just died out of nowhere we take your phone, put it in an envelope and ship it back to the manufacturer. in the mean time well offer you a loaner phone if you need one (just whatever we have on hand at the time, usually phones we get from trade-ins) (you keep your battery and sim) , and we put a 50 dollar hold on your card (yes on a creditcard, not your account) until your phone comes back in and we get our loaner phone. they'll send you a phone back to us, not yours, usually a refurbished version, then we call you and let you know your phones ready.
NEVER have I ever seen or heard anything ever of checking for root. most of our reps don't even know what that is.. once we submit a replacement form, the new phone is on transit to our shop usually by the next day (meaning they send out the replacement before they get the one we sent).
my advice is once you're sure the phone is dead, take it in to your retailer, tell them it died out of nowhere while you were texting, and it won't turn back on. you don't need to go into anymore detail than that..
clearly I have a problem with rambling this morning haha so ill stop talking there. if you have anymore questions tho, ill be happy to answer. goodluck!

Didn't mention it. I underwent much thoroughly then what I typed.. Yup tried 3 different cables, couple of chargers, usb cable.
And no it really wasn't plugged in. I really was expecting a sms at that time, when it took too long, I took it out from the pocket and voila DEAD!

yup lifeless like a brick.
** By the way an incidental finding found before claiming warranty. While having the battery in the phone. It was still warm. Removed it. Became cooler, upon reinstall, it became warm again. What gives??!

Thanks for the detailed reply man, really appreciated. Especially since I was already trying to read the minds of these warranty dealers!
So just a while ago I gave it in for warranty. I was adamant of it going dead while I was doing an sms (although true!).. just said no to whatever cause they tried to find (wasn't any, honest!). They were pressing me though for the graze it got (a month ago).. I said 90% of the phones are scratched, and how many do die? He went okay we'll see then, 'yeah you are right we buy that, most that gets damaged from a fall is a phone with shattered screen!"'. Next question, the tricky one!. Did you modify/update software?
I was like, I keep my phones as stock and was totally acting alien to terms like 'rooting' 'firmware' 'kernel' etc (not being honest, but i'm sure that's not the cause)
He was like okay hand it over, we'll do the rest!
Hopefully they don't ever get to revive the mobo or i'm screwed for real!
my phone just died after flashing morfic A10 kernel. i am running stock rooted rom and the best part my sgs 3 was bought 11/18/12 from target, cant go to download mode, cant go to recovery i even tried adb recovery and download mode hoping to turn on nada, charge for an hour no led flashing. my sgs3 totally dead. called target and they said just bring it and they will replace it with new one if the phone wont turn on. is that mean i will be okay even my phone is rooted?
UPDATE:
Thank God.. got my SIII fixed in warranty, now it's back to life!
Just had a motherboard replacement, no further details given.
Hence kind of proven!:
if the phone is truly dead no one in the sammy repair could able to detect that.
