*Contribution thread for Newt* - HTC Droid DNA

As some of you may or may not know, Newtoroot is going through some personal issues at this time. I think it would be a great idea if we all came together and threw him some money. I just put a $600 deposit on an apartment with me and my girlfriend, but I'll still try to throw him $5 or so...
It has come to my attention that there is a donate button on the bottom of his signature. I'm sure he would appreciate anything, and if you can't donate, at least give him some kind words.
XDA is a Community, and together we can keep it great. The DNA would be far less enjoyable without his work and hours of work for free to bring us the best software on this device...
Thanks everyone!

He hasn't been around much cuz, i know being unemployed, it's hard to choose what bills to pay and last month he really had some hard personal times. I know he don't want me posting his business on here but man. Newt I pray for you and I hope you will get a job offer or win the lottery *that was a joke the second part*. I know you need to take care of your wife n kid so dont spend too much time on XDA (even though we love you and our updates). I'll send some $$ next time i get paid for you bro. Keep yo head up

thanks for the thread

Kush, thanks for letting us know about this. We're a community and we try to help out each other.

I donated $50. Good luck NEWT!!!

I'd like to know what field he's in. I have a number of connections around the country and depending on the field I may be able to find something. Especially if he knows firewalls or other network security. Or lives in Omaha or Pittsburgh.

Appreciation fund for developers

Changing to my appreciation/donation fund. I know I'm new here, and want to contribute where I can. That being said I want to contribute to the Developer(s) that get the phone root for us. In appreciation.
I know I could wait for HTC (if they) unlock it. But let's face it, we want it now and who knows if/when HTC will come through.
Again this is to express appreciation to the dev's. And duce this will buy you a few gallons of haagen dazs
If I'm out of line here then a mod can delete this, otherwise I'll start by and will keep a tally updated:

Anyways, Bounties always help drive developers to root things faster, Sounds cool to me.
1: Wrong section (this itself isn't development)
2: Bounties suck. Give someone a few bucks for helping you out if they're working on it. Don't hold money over their heads and tell them they can only have it if they drop their lives to give the public something that they're working on in their spare time.
Personally I think bounties just tend to start fights about who contributed what... hard to pay a bounty when 3 or 5 or 10 people contributed.
That said... I won't stop you from trying...

No they don't we don't expect them to "drop there lives" its just a bounty to raise money for the devs to show our appreciation and to reaffirm that all their hardwork will pat off besides rooting the evo out me down for five bucks

My reasoning is the same as what Haus said. If you offer a bounty, people stop sharing information and try to get it done first and quickest because they know that only the person that gives the answer will get the money.
Example:
If I were to offer $500 to the first person to answer 50 specific questions... Do you think anyone would answer a post that said "Hey what's the answer to number 7?" Everyone would want to keep to themselves and not help anyone else.
Obviously this is different, but that's a more extreme idea to get the point out there.
If you feel like someone is working hard, or has worked hard... Donate a few dollars to them to give them something for their time. I really don't like the idea of bounties because it then puts pressure on people to keep going and ignore other things, as only one person will get the big bounty (if people actually even pay what they said they would).
Holy... I think I just saw Stericson. This phone is bringing people from everywhere!

fair enough, you got me lol down with this fund
Of course I'm not opposed to giving some loot to those that deserve it though. I need to talk to the wife to decide how much I can give up to Haus (and probably others, he isn't the only one I've taken notice of) for his work. I'm sure we'll get root soon, so I'm not worried about forking over some money now to let him know I appreciate the hard work.
I'm pretty sure we didn't need a bounty for this phone to get rooted.

Since this thread has apparently been relocated, and the issues I raised with the original approach the OP took have been fixed, I can confirm that any donations going through the chipin link in the original posters post are indeed being directed at me for the purposes of raising funds to acquire an Evo 3D.
If the community sees fit to buy me the phone, I will be happy to develop for it, but I will not promise unrealistic miracles.
I can't promise that you'll suddenly win the lottery, or have better luck in life.
I can promise that any android device I own will get development time from me (yes that includes kernel development).
You should not feel obligated in any way to participate. The fact is, even if I don't get the phone, there is inevitably going to be a strong development community behind this phone. A good portion of teamwin have the phone, and given the strong sales it's a safe bet that there will be many other developers as well. Any participation in the OP fundraiser should be considered completely voluntary; I will not solicit anyone in this regard.

I do not care if they do this i just see no reason to raise $549.00 when you can get the same thing for $400 to $450 elsewhere.
The op just did it wrong i think is why many are upset because no way to track how much and my reason why $549? that is sprints over priced price not what you can get them for.
Id use 1 of my upgrades and sell it for $425 bingo saved 100$ already.See what i mean by the op? he just did it wrong is all.

I admit that I groaned when I saw this thread but I have to say that I applaud the idea. Maybe a better method could be suggested? I have no idea what that is though. I know this has been done in the past but, to be honest, I've never paid much attention to "donation" threads.
I would be happy to donate $$ to get netarchy this phone. Not just to get him to root it, but for all he's given to this community!
sent my $5. i know it isnt much, but every lil bit helps
wait would he be coming over from Verizon? sprint gives 125 for jumping carriers and the 3VO is only 200 on new plans...they might even buy his old/other phone from him....im not sure if they will from another carrier but they bought my evo 4g back from me for 150. Phone only cost me 50 bucks.

I'd do $25, then another $25 upon completion. Problem Is we would need to raise enough money for whichever Developer to buy a Jetstream to build with.
i know. i'm hoping one of the dev's already owning the jetstream (i think there's one or two other than task650) will keep it up..
if not - maybe we could get enough money to buy one..they are cheaper than they used to be

I brought it up to Newtoroot from mikmik, he said for it to be done he'd need the device. He's done amazing work over the years, recently he recoded the ril from the one x to bring sense 4 ICS for the the reZound.
i think there's an opportunity here.
if we could get enough money, and one of the members here would like to sell his device, maybe we can buy a device for development.
meanwhile we must wait for the bounty to grow..

Yes. Agreed. Please guys pool in. Even if we don't get a member to sell the device, I think a new one would be like $550 or something with contract. Let's see. Hopefully Russ's contact also comes through. He will post details himself once any news available.

I've got a little bit of experience with compiling Cyanogen. Work is crazy-busy for me lately, so I'm not sure when I'll have time to work on it, but I will do whatever I can to get this working.
I'm not much of a developer, so any help I can get will be appreciated. We'll need to look for other devices already running ICS that have similar hardware.
Like I said, work's crazy busy, so right now I don't have much time to hunt for this info.
However, I may be able to use the HP Touchpad (which I also have, running CM9) as a starting point. The Jetstream has a Qualcomm MSM8260 CPU, where the TP is using a MSM8060. They're similar, yet obviously not identical CPUs.
We'll also need to figure out the other hardware, like what display, touchscreen, wifi, etc. hardware the Jetstream is using.
With any luck, we'll get something. It sucks that Honeycomb is closed source. That'll make things a little bit harder. At least the kernel's open source still.
I'm going to post this over in the Dev section, for anyone who wants to help with data mining.
Oh, and I don't want the bounty. Just getting ICS on this device would be enough reward for me.

Doubtful. Like I said, I'm not a super-dev or anything, and things like bypassing/decrypting security are beyond me.
There's a couple people over in the Development forum who are buzzing about this. Apparently there *may* be an HTC dev willing to help out, if I understood correctly.
Let's push this!
this needs to get more attention. Otherwise it's just going to die off, I think for a developer to be truly interested we need more then $300, because building ICS for this device won't be easy. I know task has tried before and he said that he could not get it to work but I'm not sure how much time he had to play around with it since his daughter is sick. Maybe we can reach out to some tech media like Engadet, Boy Genius Report, or Tom's Hardware or even contact XDA and see if they can make a post about this on the portal homepage and really it this idea put there. I'm pretty sure that the jetstream has a bigger community then this just they might not know about xda...
its a matter of time, mainly.
this forum was never alive for more than a few days in a row..
people doesnt come here to often. we need to try and wait, and keep the posts going.
also - if someone feels the sums are too high, any contribution will count! even 5-10 dollars from a few people could make a change.
in the event of this not working, try signing my petition here, http://www.thepetitionsite.com/480/...ew-jetstream-jetstream-4g-android-40-upgrade/
What is the most insulting about the whole process is that HTC is discontinuing support (which is the only way to describe not updating software even a few months after release) and still insistent on keeping the device locked down for "user experience". I mean they could almost get XDA devs to do the support for free if they weren't so possessive about the device after the POS. Fingers crossed on that contact pulling through.

Don't you love people taking the DEV's work and getting money for it?

It's not about being lazy, it's about the conformity. We all go to the mechanic to fix our cars unless you know how to fix it, obviously. That's just how it works man. I do think that people not giving credit to the devs and all of the people that make this happen is really messed up though.
I don't believe in these kinds of businesses, here in Puerto Rico, there are lots of stores that dedicate themselves to hack iPhones or as they call it "unlock" it. And they charge like 30$!! It's ridiculous! I get disgusted every time I see one

well its the same as a computer repair store pretty much...
but i dont believe in people stretching the truth so much like the snippet that was posted in the op. i mean if you want to help someone who's afraid to do it themselves, and they are willing to give you a couple bucks why not? now i wouldnt charge $30 for anything... the highest i'd go would be $10 lol

Yeah I also wouldn't make a big business out of either like the people I mentioned, I'll be honest, puertorricans can be pretty dumb most of the time, lol

Nah..I'm sticking with my lazy comment. people don't bother to learn anything anymore. Doesn't take long to read how to root and flash.
the business isn't about giving credit, it's about charging money for something that's free

Some of you guys must not understand the difference between selling a service and selling a tangible product. You're paying for this guys time and knowledge of rooting android phones. Don't be such a stick in the mud

Agreed. I don't see the problem with it. Heck if I could make it into a side business I would. As others have said, they aren't selling the work that others have made, they're charging for their time, knowledge, gas (in a lot of cases they will travel to you) and convenience to root/hack/mod a phone that the owner doesn't want to do themselves. Yeah they can read some forums and do it themselves, but if they're willing to pay for it, it means they're either lazy and don't care or aren't technically inclined.
Some phones really aren't as simple as you would think to root and simply install wifi tether, for example. Downloading drivers, reading the root process for that device, downloading the scripts and tools, copying files to and from the phone, rebooting and the wait adds up into a lot of time and sometimes frustration. A lot of people don't want to deal with it, and if I'm going to learn all of that and sacrifice my time for someone I don't know, I want to be compensated.
I worked for Data Doctors (computer repair business) and while our prices (not set by me) were a little expensive, people gladly paid it because they didn't know how nor could they be bothered to fix the system themselves. That's business.
it took my around 5 hours the other day to figure out how to root, s-off and flash a custom rom on the Amaze. If I had already started my new job I would definitiv have paid the $15 to save me 5 hours of time.
Times are hard and knowledge is power.
If this guy knows what he's doing why not let him do it?
I think it's f*ed up that you flagged just because you're an XDA member who "supposedly" knows better.
He's trying to make some money off of his knowledge.
I mean, just because the information is here doesn't mean everyone who reads it understands it or could implement it.
Some people are not technology inclined.
YouTube has videos on how to do almost everything but just because you watch doesn't mean you'll be able to do it.
What was wrong with him trying to make money from the time and effort he invested into understanding the rooting and unlocking process of a phone?
Honestly..flagging him was a d**k move.
Took my girlfriends mytouch4gslide, he screwed up. Download ruu ....

For me, I want to know how to root and flash my own ROMs. Without knowing how to do things yourself you're stuck with whatever this guy loads on your phone, and isn't that the point of rooting, being able to load custom ROMs.
be proud of your work cause shearing is caring i learned a lot form xda i do get paid to fix my friends phones for them but when i get paid i save it just for XDA DEV who's work i used to do the job it's not stealing it's called Redistributing & dev can always spot there work from a mile away i used to burn movies and sell it on Craigslist i even posted adds on hacking any games on android with gamecih ^_^ wow those were the days i would ask $20 a pop lol 1 day i had over 15 calls lmfao like ice cube said TODAY WAS A GOOD DAY
+ thanks to gay Bush n homo Obama
the economy is Focked
i don't wanna sell drugs / rob people not when i got 2 kids
now i work 13hr shift 6 days a week

Thanks man!
also thank you to XDA user ZooDad for $20!
I too was fortunate enough to unlock from HTCDev early. I could not wait to get this phone and appreciate all the effort so far.
I'm in for $20. and will have a HDMI adapter in hand (can't find mine) at the end of the day to test if HDMI works.
Thanks for putting this together.

okay guys, the paypal some of you are still not sending as goods, so we should be at $125 in my paypal and we're at "PayPal balance: $119.86 USD"
not a big deal, we just may need an extra donation to make up for what pay pal has taken out.
5/10 ppl have donated already, + mine, I'll throw in some more if I can. I'm very limited on funds as I'm sure most of you are as well, times are real tough, so thank you guys again so much.
I have every e-mail from paypal and all the records in case we don't make it.. but I am confident that we are going to reach our goal.

I have no idea what S-OFF or AOSP is, something to do with flashing custom radios... Will donating to this phone help to get root for all those who weren't as lucky (as myself) to get unlocked before the lockdown?
I'll donate $20.

yes this will get you FULL root though
s-off gives you the full ability of root and makes thing 10x easier.
without s-off we need to flash kernels separate from the ROM and a bunch of other annoyingness.
your $20 would be greatly appreciated and would go to great cause, we are so close!
it is definitely worth it, it will greatly help this community.
I'll mark you down in the OP!
only $45 more!!!
