Before making assumptions and dismissing this thread, please read the following. There are a few recent threads asking what you're favorite custom ROMs are -- but that's not what I'm looking for here.
I'm looking to have a better understanding of the differences between the variety of ROMs that grace the development section of these forums. Clearly there are quite a few popular choices out there, but to someone who is not up to date on Android development it is hard to understand what benefits one would have over another. Many seem to have fairly similar feature sets, and the differences that are apparent often are meaningless to someone who has no recent point of reference.
Thus, what I am asking for here are informative comparisons / reviews that explain what you like about various ROMs - the differences between and benefits of their feature sets.
So, who wants to start? I would, but I'm using a really outdated ICS rom that I'm fairly dissatisfied with - hence my desire to see some thoughts on what's currently out there
@shayne
Please actually read what I wrote before quoting me.
I'm specifically not looking for people to list their favorites. I am specifically asking people to compare the featuresets of the ROMs and explain which they find useful. There's nothing, whatsoever, critical nor disrespectful about that. And it has not been done before - not in any of the threads I've seen.
ok well we shall see how it leads then....
This thread will most likely be closed.... Anyways, I enjoy SuperNexus by Jamie because it is a stock nexus experience, amazing battery life (I under clocked), and buttery smooth performance. I highly suggest this for people who like stripped stock ROMs.

I really am at a loss as to why people have such a problem with this thread. Again,
I'm not asking which ROM is better!
I'm trying to start a thread comparing the features of each. It's very, very confusing and overwhelming to go through pages upon pages of Custom ROMs and try to understand what differentiates them, when the vast majority look fairly identical to the layperson. Hence, a thread elaborating on the differences between various ROMs and explaining the reasons why one might choose one over another is called for - - is it not??

Because Devs are here because they work hard and share their work. They are not obligated to do so. Comparing to roms to others is a big disrespect. Hence why all the other comparison threads are closed.

I can see how asking for qualitative opinions on which ROM is better would be disrespectful. That is not what I'm doing!
I am simply asking to compare the features that different ROMs have so-as to understand what makes one different from another, and thereby understand them better. I have edited the OP to better reflect this. I don't see how that could possibly be construed as disrespectful.

Have you not read the 1st post of any of the ROM threads? Every single 1st post of every single ROM thread answers your question about what features each ROM has. Read them and if possible flash the ROM. Doesn't take long to try a ROM out and seen if ya like it or not.

OK Phnord, there is no good way to get people to read your thread objectively....... That is unfortunate ....... because of the nature of the subject everyone just thinks this is a "best rom" thread, which it is not..... But that said most people would rather troll than read.
The easiest way to do comparisons in XDA is to take the op showing what bloat was removed and what features are included in the Rom.... then copy and paste either into a excel sheet or a word doc and then you can make a side by side comparison. The other stuff that outside input would be helpful, (as you see)...... appears to be too much to ask for in this thread.
I do not see the members behaving we respect in this thread so this is the last post, but I hope I helped you get your answers and let this be known the trolls were cited for trolling.....
Thanks ~~~ oka1

Now I know you're going to call me paranoid....but I have been seeing a progressive shortening of battery life on my device as we progressively move into more advanced custom kernels created by our lovely devs
Anyone care to discuss?
** it has been pointed out to me we are still not this far along in kernels...still an interesting read
Should be in general not development
i only put it here because in "general" this would more directly impact "development", target audience and all.....i suppose they can move if they like, but just so you know, i did ponder that for a minute..

I personally think if its a development related discussion it belongs here. Not to say this post has any direct relation to "current development" There doesn't have to be a zip or a side load or a script to be a development related post.
Maybe our development sections (for all devices) should have restricted access to post unless the mods deem the memeber a developer. Read/write and read only type scenario. :-/

I don't own a tbolt but seems to be a lot of talk on the 4g not playing to nice. Think it was acting like wifi when it couldn't get a good 4g connection, trying, failing, reverting to 3g, then repeating. Again don't have one so just repeating what others have said, i'm sure theres lots on the sit in the tbolt forum. Whatever the exact issue is, its most likely centered on the lte radio.
Nice article. Relates directly to the biggest issue of all android devices. Good performance = bad battery. This helps clarify that. KEEP IN ANDROID [email protected]!

Maybe there needs to be a separate section for "Releases" then if this article honestly really ruined you visit like Spam. Where do people discuss development issues if not in the development section? This section like you pointed out is where everyone comes to get the latest rom or kernel. Seems to me that warrants its own Release section.....oh wait....that's why the mods asked those types of threads to be titled specifically in a format that makes that obvious. Then the discussion threads could co-exist in the same section without being considered "Spam"

It is a good article and it is development related. Just because its not a rom, kernel zip, script, apk or system dump doesn't disqualify it from the development forum.
(Though android general may have been a better option as stated previously.)
Spend as much time policing your own actions as you do trolling threads like a lynch mob and maybe things will get to the way they used to be on this site.

yeah if there was a "development discussion" section that would be best....as if all the articles available out that could be posted like this to foster discussion ended up in here.......well it would really clutter stuff up
my own personal opinion (and its not worth anything) is that the development section is best served as a release...and discussion of said release...section...i mean thats what 95% of us treat it as...and have been accustomed to having it as such
Hey all,
As some of you have probably noticed by now, we have a new Development section for original works. As explained in the portal article Introducing the Original Development Forums, these forums were found to be very useful in other sections and there has been a lot of requests to add them for more devices.
Please refer to the article for general guidelines on what is and isn't appropriate to post there, and if you have any questions feel free to ask in this thread or to PM any of the moderators about it.
Those using Tapatalk or the XDA app will probably need to refresh the forums list in order to see it. You can do this by going to the base forum view that list all of the different devices and refreshing or by unsubscribing and then resubscribing to this section.

I think this is neat, since I'm only really interested in the original development anyway, because that tends to be more fun.
Very nice. This will be extremely useful for devs.
edit: Hey Haus. Just an idea, but it would be nice to have a Recognized Dev forum with-in each device. One where we can collaborate and figure out mods together and have less chatter from non-devs. But a place where non-devs can still have access to links to mods and such. Just a thought.

The way I see it is that it creates more place to navigate through to look for roms and other work. I personally do not see the real need for it especially since both sub forums would contain the same kind of information except that one would have original work and the other would not. This could have been done a different way without completely creating a new sub forum that would produce a similar result. For example, the OP post could explain that it's original work or the thread title for all original work would be identified with a prefix of ORG.
At any rate, it seems that others see it useful and probably very helpful for developers. I am not bothered by it! However, I would have preferred things to stay the way they were.
I'm just a little confused as to what defines original development versus non-original. Original meaning not ported from another device? As I browsed through the ROMs in each section I couldn't figure out what differentiated one from the other making it original.

The announcement really details the difference.
For example, CM9 development is original because it's new and big and it's something that's being created.
ViperROM, for example, is not original because it is based on HTCs stock ROM.

Well that is what I thought would be the factor at first. Except ViperROM and others based on stock are in the original section while other stock based ROMs are not.
Edit: I re-read the announcement and maybe the difference is more apparent to other devs and not so much to the layperson but still sounds kinda subjective. Doesn't make much difference to me, just curious.

There are a lot of times where someone with a low post count is able to help out a lot so we don't want to limit it too much, but making it so only RDs (and maybe RCs/RTs) can create new threads there may be a good idea. Try running it by them in the RD area to see if it's possible.

Unfortunately a lot of it is kind of subjective since it's a difficult thing to really define, but for the most part it depends on how significant the changes with the ROM are. It's very much a work in progress still so I apologize if things get bounced around some while it's all being sorted.

xHausx, I like your work and appreciate all the explanations you give but I gotta say.. this new section is retarded.
Maybe it was needed in the Samsung forums but we don't need it here. It's just going to confuse a ton of people.
I'm not a dev, so if they like the idea that's great. I just see it as a way for more silly arguments to start. I think that development is development the smallest of ideas is original. Seems like if you're in original then your work is somehow better. I guess we'll see how it works out.

I think the most annoying part of this feature is having to look in two different places for the same thing and being unsure which forum your favorite rom(s) are located in. The more I use this (both on a desktop and on the phone), the more annoying it is. I don't think the average user care much whether the rom is original or not as long as it works well and do what it is supposed to do.
The idea behind adding this feature is great but its reality is not.
I was excited about the section but it all seems the same as before. Every mod, derivative rom, and other FAQs.
I think it probably would have best been split AOSP core and HTC core if you're going to split it at all, otherwise just leave it the way it was, as messy as it was.
Im not a fan of it either. I find it hard to differentiate between the two. I've read the announcement but I still find myself going into both looking for a specific thread. I think this will just confuse a lot of people but if the devs like it then ok...
Sent from my LTEvo using XDA Premium
I'm a moderator, and I make roms and mods and themes, some of that is "original". I've written some tutorials for original things as well. Honestly I think this is silly. Maybe tag original dev threads or something like the "recognized" program. But differentiating dev threads seems like a lot more headache for devs and users alike. It's like making a new original themes section where the themer drew his images from scratch and wrote new xmls instead of modifying existing images and code. Who's idea was this? I fail to see it's benefit. If it is what it is then cool. But there's already RUU kitchen built roms in the "original" section, and though there may be "original" tweaks to said roms, I don't know that that makes them so. I'd love to have some transparent open discussion about this with users/devs/moderators alike. Thoughts? Counters? Etc?
Guys,
My apologies if this is in the wrong spot, but I'm couldn't find information in the development forum. What does the Optimus G Rom look like? (I think the only one available is "the base") Does it look like stock? Is there any functionality that is seriously lacking? (i.e. LTE, camera, etc.)
Thanks!
This is very much the wrong spot. This is a general thread, not the Q&A thread. There is also a thread for the ROM itself, so you can direct all questions there. You shouldn't have to even ask the question because it's detailed in the ROMs description and throughout the thread. Better yet, install the rom and find out!

A good amount of people have no problems, and a good amount do. It's a completely stock rom, so it'll look just like when you got it, except if you use the changes he's listed in the roms log.

OP ...
It's also a very good idea to wipe the system when setting up for a restore.
New roms will often wipe the system for you, but a restore generally will not.
Just a tip for clean restores.
And regarding the jab about posting.....
The forum is overflowing with new threads asking the same questions repeatedly.
It takes up so much space, that navigation becomes very difficult, and it detracts users when searching for information in the open forums.
As mentioned above, a quick search would have given you the answer to your question.
It certainly does not mean that we don't want to help, it just means that your answer is likely waiting in a quick search, rather than posting a repeat thread that takes up much needed space.

No....
There are no exemptions based on post count or self-imposed status here.
Post count means nothing, as anyone can post, regardless of the topic. (good or bad)(users just fail to read the rules)
The problems arise when the first rule of XDA is broken. and that of course, is to search before posting. Bandwidth and server space is not cheap, and this is ultimately a development site, not a nursery for people to learn how to boot into download mode etc. Those questions were answered a year ago when this device hit the shelves.
And as I mentioned above, the multi-QA threads covering the site, will bury the threads that contain the help users need to get answers.
It's the self-feeding effect, and it log jams the site something aweful. So when a search is conducted, the only results that come back are threads asking repeat questions, and no answers. (Make sense? ) And we are left with even more threads stating..."I searched, but I cant find it"...
And thats no lie under those conditions. So you see, that is why Senior members will jump on newer users to search first, rather than post a repeat thread. It often avoids the domino effect, leaving the "solved" threads visible to help people out.
I am simply a user who chooses to stay and help others avoid costly mistakes, using the knowledge I've gained here. I started on this site after reading every thread on the device I used at the time. And did not post unless it was an absolute emergency. (never really had any of those).
Soon after, I began to help others with basic questions, and gathered up a sizable number of posts through helping and giving back for the amazing work freely offered here.
Honestly, dont be afraid to post, just make sure you have exhausted the search method to the best of the site's ability to give you answers.
and after that, let us know you need a hand.
Too easy, and we will help you any way we can.....g
OK. Thanks. Great way of explaining the system and situation..Thanks Again

It's a waste of time to spend 2 years on a website, gaining knowledge about devices, and do nothing with that knowledge.
I decided after hard bricking a new phone that was entrusted to me, that I'd study, give back, and save folks the trouble if possible.
I'm not at the development level, but I can pretty much dial in the issues people are having by sight.
I miss a few here and there, (old guy )...but for the most part I get the device going again.
I tell all users, especially new users, to read every part of the mods they attempt, then read it again.
Android is all about comprehensive understanding of the processes at work.
And it takes years to master. (I'm not a master)...And the time spent by our talented developers is wasted if folks won't read and learn.
Hundreds, even thousands of hours are freely given to us by them, in the form of roms, tweaks, and fixes....all free.
We owe them the respect to read and comprehend the offerings they provide.
And a little beer money sent their way never hurts either.
Thank you for the kind words....as they make the time spent here, much more pleasurable.
And if you don't want to post a question in the open forum, just PM me...
I'll do my best to help, and if I can't answer the question, I'll find someone for you that can.
We succeed by learning and giving back to the community...
Words we all should strive to live by here ....g

Seems to me it would be nice to have sub forums for things like kernals/tw roms/aosp roms/themes
Right now it seems like it is sorted on something most people don't care about and we have to wade through it all just to get two the meat and potatoes of what we are actually looking for.

Because it is xda forums and xda makes the rules. I agree, the organization could be improved...but it is what it is.
I bet if you created more sub forums the moderators wouldn't be able to keep up. It's tough for them as it is with as many devices listed here. Could you imagine adding two or three more sub forums to every device? OMG

I am not saying just adding but having better subs
I think if re organized it would be easier to maintain. Plus you wouldnt have to moderate threads like "where did the carbon rom go"
I think a lot of folks probably feel the same way but i guess whatever i am not the one maintaining....

It would make it more logical, but you would need more mods. People can't even figure out to not post a question in development or even more common general. Could you imagine if we had more sub forums for then to miss post in.
Perefect example, this question (labeled question in the title) posted in the wrong section (general). Just sayin

good catch.... however it should be titled "discussion about sub forums"
I am not saying we need more sub forums. i am saying we need better lines between them. After all a lot of questions just turn into discussions.
90% of the people don't know or care the difference between orig dev and dev.
however 90% would know the difference between a rom and a kernal.

I think this might be a little optimistic :silly: But your point is still valid. I think a re-organization would be nice.
I don't see any need for more sub-forums. The current organization makes perfect sense. That is why there is a naming convention for kernels and ROM's. The current organization is the result of years of trying different organization of sub's on XDA.
Remember, first and foremost XDA is a forum for developers to collaborate and share work.
But everybody is entitled to have an opinion, I'm not trying to stifle that.

If only there was a search function you could use. Or even just a way to save your favorite threads.... lol j/k someone had to say it.
I agree, there does seem to be room for improvement.
IMO the Q&A should be eliminated. If you have a question about a ROM, Kernel, or Theme ask it in that thread. Any other kind of question should be in general or accessories. I would even go as far to say the general section should be shared with all carrier forums, like accessories is.
I also think Themes and apps should be split. Themes should go in development and be carrier specific. Apps should be part of accessories because the majority can be used no matter carrier.
It would actually condense the number of sections and should be easier to monitor. But it's just my opinion, from the outside looking in.
