My Brother was checking out my new 3VO over the weekend, he liked it, and is an iPhone guy. But he does make a good point, he can not stand the stupid placement of the power button to activate the phone on. You have to reach you're finger all the way to the top of the phone, and press down hard to wake up the phone.
He says Apple does it right, you just press the thumb button on the bottom of the phone to wake, and is very fast and simple. I have to agree
A better placement would be just below the volume buttons, or left side, just below the charging port.
Man up. Hit the button.
It's not like you're trying to turn on the phone in a gun fight while reloading... it's not that serious.
I prefer it on the top. My buddy just picked up a Samsung Charge & I noticed it has it on the side.
Short fingers seem to be the problem, not placement of the power button. If he's got short limbs, this should be the least of his problems.

With the button on top I don't have to worry about accidentally turning on the phone when I take it out of my pocket grabbing it from it's sides.

I actually like it on the top. You're less likely to accidently turn it on in your pocket. And the power button on my EVO 3D is really easy to press without pressing down hard.

It was all a matter of patterned behavior.. I had the Evo and switched to Epic. I then had to learn to press it on the side. I switched to Evo 3d and I have to retrain again. Doesn't matter TOO much where the button is, once you retrain yourself for it.
On top is where it belongs. If you want a rinky dink dime sized hard button on the front, you'll have to do what Apple did and waste 40% of the front surface for things other than the display. That's why Apple's displays are the size of a postage stamp: wasted space on the front for things that don't belong there.

This is likely the main reason it's on top. You tend to grip the sides when putting it in your pocket, purse, fanny pack, butthole, etc., and having it on top pretty much eliminates that. Also it's probably morel likely to get bumped awake with the button on the side. I don't think there's really a perfect place for a power button, but I prefer HTC's placement. Now the placement of the charging port on the 3D, I have an issue with.
When I hold the phone in my left hand like usual, my pointer finger can comfortably turn it on... no complaints here---aside from the power button being wobbily, due to the design of the casing.
Doesn't really matter to me, but I liked how it was on the top-right side on the Epic a little better.
The iPhone power button is on the top as well. The home button just acts to wake from sleep. If your iPhone is off, you still need to reach all the way up there to turn it on. It's more about capacitive buttons than anything else.
What I wouldn't mind is if the camera button served to wake on a long press, maybe even launching the camera app directly on a second press.
Sure. you might get some accidental wakes/pictures (which could be entertaining), but there would be some nice functionality with that.
Tell him he needs to hit the gym if he is having a hard time pressing the power button

I like the placement of the power button. At least they are consistent with all their devices. The volume button is what gets me but not a big deal. I wont pick at minor things because what would make me happy, may not make others happy.

No, on the top is for the best. I have a Samsung focus too. Tue power button is on the side. I'm always turning the screen back on when I set it down by accidentally hitting the stiff breeze activating button.
This one needs a stronger button too. I fixed that though.

Anywhere other than the top or the screen and it would be pressed on the time on accident. If it were on the screen, it would take up space, and if it were a software button on the screen then the screen would have to stay on and eat your battery.

Has anyone noticed the power button being extra sensitive? That is to say, on the Hero/Evo, you had to hold the power button for at least 2 seconds before the pop-up Power Options menu would display. On my 3vo, it pops up in less than a second. I'm finding it slightly annoying, because the space between "sleep" and "power options menu" is too narrow.

work on reseating the back shell of the phone, i had the issue too at first and i thought it was a defect, but i played with it a couple times and got it to work like a normal power button
Nope not at all, I actually have to press it more than once sometimes and harder the second time for it to work......
yea mine is a lil sensitive...cant have it my pocket because of it..pulled it out a couple times and the phone bouncing around in my pocket opened apps and almost called ppl

you have to give it a little lovin- WON"T happen by accident.
Also - saved my3D from a nice 5 foot drop courtesy of some Crazy 3 yr olds on the 4th.

I actually find the new power button a little bit better to my liking, a lot easier to find in a blind poweron. But I do agree that it might be a little too sensitive. I've found that the phone turns itself on while in my pocket - which is a bad thing because on shake the led flashlight turns on lol! Of course that kills the battery...
Also when trying to turn on or off... sometimes i see the turn off, reboot menu pop up which just simply put, never happened with the evo og. And while i like the ease of use and how fast it reacts to turning off/on, it seems to be a bit of a problem ATM
not not at all sensitive. it's actually under sensitive. some time i get frustrated because i have to push it so hard in the exact sweet spot just to get it to turn on. after having it for over a week now it's getting better, but at first i couldn't even get the thing turned on.
Not mine in fact mine is kinda hard to push. I'm going to the Sprint store I bought mine from this weekend to see if I can get it switched out because I have light leaking through the ring that surrounds the search key, and it bugs the hell out of me lol. So I hope my new one is gonna be normal.
This happens to me with or without the case. I did have a very brief time where the power button would not respond at all, and discovered that the back was causing it (I had swapped the OEM 8G card for my 32).
I don't think this is a big enough problem for me to try and swap the phone out, although it is a little annoying. I suppose in time I'll learn not to push the power button too long.
I have the same problem with the sensitive power button but I'm on a Samsung Galaxy S. I'm wondering if there is dust in the way... Anybody ever find a fix or diagnose the problem for this? I've seen the same problem across multiple devices on the forums so I am starting to believe its a wear and tear type of thing.
Mine is kinda sensitive. But not as sensitive as the one I saw at my local sprint store. Interesting how it seems like no two EVOS are the same.
Good thing though is that since the button is built into the backcover... Maybe picking up another one can deliver a more sensitive/stiff experience.

I have just had my SGS2 replaced because of a broken screen, My old phone's home button worked in a different way to this one I was wondering how I revert back?
If i pressed the home key once on the old phone it would take me to the last used desktop, pressing it a 2nd time would take me to the home screen (far left)
With this new phone if I press the home button it just takes me to the homescreen selector app.
both phones are stock and running touchwiz.
is it because you have more than one launcher? maybe you could select one of them and tick the set as default checkbox?

No I only have one launcher installed. When I plugged my phone into keis I noticed that there was a firmware upgrade available, I have now installed this and it has solved the problem.
How I broke my screen? Well I don't want to scare anyone as it has changed my views on this phone, but here goes:
my phone was only a month old and had never been dropped or miss used in anyway infact it was quite the opposite.
all I did to break my phone was put it in my pocket! And drove my car for ten minutes! I did have an old pair of jeans on at the time so they wher a bit tight but the phone should be able to handle this! I guess when I have pressed the clutch pedal my phone has twisted and there was a crack across the lcd (internally)
So don't put your phone in your pocket if the pocket isn't very big!

I got to thinking about how bad the power button is on my unit, compared to the OG Transformer:
How is everyone's power button? Mine is stiff as a day old dead dog, and I find myself squashing, pushing, pushing again to get the unit out of sleep mode. My OG Transformers (all 3 of them, have a nice springy detent of perhaps 1/32" - 1/64" (damn America for never adapting the Metric System! I don't know my millimeters from my water meter) The new button is just a mush,, with no noticeable travel)
connect your device to the computer (in debugging)
and run 'adb logcat'
watch the window every time you press power. there will be a noticeable like like screen state, or power state, i cant remember exactly.

My power button seems fine however I've got to press it at just the correct angle to get it to work. Put the pad of your pointer finger on it then give just a slight 'curl' towards you and she should light right up.

Thank you for the "Button Pressing Method" lesson. The funny thing is, your technique actually helps! My "stiffy" is a lot easier to manipulate than before. You must have a LOT of practice with these things!
It's actually how I use the power button, so it was pretty convenient to change it around into something perverted.

I've found that... sort of "pinching" the power button (thumb on front of tablet) makes it work very well.
Is it just me or is the power button too flush to find and and too soft to press. I believe I will eventually get accustomed to its position which is a bit lower than on the GS2, but the rounded bezel and flushness seem to make it a bit hard to press sometimes. The volume rocker seems more click for some reason.

It's just you, you'll adjust to it eventually.
I had pretty much the same issue. Maybe a little worse. My power button had no "click" whatsoever. It would often get stuck in when I pressed it to shut the screen off and would then cause my phone to reboot over and over until I noticed.
This happened way more often than I would expect from a £500 phone, so I called Vodafone and explained the issue. They sent a person to deliver a brand new phone the next day and the power button on this one is much, much better. So if you think you could swing it as faulty hardware, which mine clearly was, then I'd recommend getting it replaced.
Is your power button much flusher than the volume rocker? Mine seems so.

I am having an issue with my top volume button, it seems a bit sticky.
My power mutton is crap also, no click at all. I have samsung's slim case ant it's very hard to press power button. I bought that phone only 4 days ago, so i don't want to send it to repair service, it takes usually about 2-4 weeks

You shouldn't need to send it away for warranty repair, the button seems faulty, I would get it replaced. I have similar issues with mine, the power button is spongy and creaks. I will receive a door to door replacement today. Don't sell yourself short mate
yh its too flush, some times i have to double check that if its working and ive pressed it. but i got used to it
my volume up button is very sticky, sometimes press and volume goes full blast when i dont want. kinda annoying, taken button out and cleaned but no difference . not sure if i should send back as im rooted :crying:

The volume up button broke on mine after 4 days. It stopped springing back up after pressing it. Vodafone swapped my handset, and so far so good.
It is a little worrying to see others having similar issues with their buttons - I assumed mine was an isolated incident.
