Hi all, oddly, I can't seem to find a clear answer to this from searching and Google. Does the SII have a separate recovery partition? I see chainfire has created a customised CWM to be deployed with his kernel, but I was puzzled by this as coming from a HTC world, I was wondering how CWM backups up the ROM partitions (or more importantly restores them) if they are in use.

no one?
I would also like to know how this works. Coming from 3 previous HTC phones and buying a SGS2 tomorrow, I wouldn't mind finding out how to root, nandroid and flash correctly.
I know all about Odin already.
Is this the only way?

Then why not read the guides in the development section? step by step guides.
There is also a search function in these forums.
Not being rude, but you are asking to be spoonfed when there are good, well written proven guides to all your questions.

I take it this was a reply to MrBadgerMilk's question? I've looked at the FAQ in the dev section and used search and can't see the answer to the question of whether the SII has a separate recovery partition. Hopefully the people that know (and some will) could just post a yes or no.
Right... http://bit.ly/SGS2answer
Now that's over, no, the SGS2 doesn't have a separate recovery partition. The zImage contains the recovery binary, and another init script is run, when recovery is to be entered, from the standard zImage.
Now that was the answer I was looking for. Thank you very much.
EDIT: Is the video some Samsung secret initiation ritual thing?

Sorry for acting like a total noob. I did a search, but because of the crappy network that orange is, I couldn't ever stay connected long enough to actually get to the results of the search. Tbh, I think i came off as a bit of a plank. If you keep an eye out for chainfire 'Root/kernel' threads in the dev section you can go far wrong.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399for root/clockwork mod recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 for step by step guide on how to flash via Odin, and the official roms. I've had the sgs2 for a month now, and after trying the (now deceased) angelom rom, and litening rom, I went back to stock KE7. and tbh, it feels just as quick as the 'customs'. The only thing I would advise is to remove(or freeze) the samsung bloat by using titanium backup. There is another thread somewhere with a list of things you can remove without affecting functionality.

Lol...that's what I was thinking....but my opinion changed when you posted this.
This is a guide to help people fix fastboot not being recognized with the new windows 8 consumer preview, which happened to me and i found the easy fix. After installing the preview,
1 connect htc evo 3d, let phone connect and install its own drivers, then under device manager, find htc-update drivers- download and install adb drivers http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?2tunwdxr3q2q8ec
2. Next go into sdk manager and install all updates that are current, make sure you dont let computer go into idle and if files arent downloading correctly, simply redo the update till everything updates properly, might take a few times because windows 8 isnt optimized yet for file transfer, who knows, etc
3. FASTBOOT IS NO LONGER UNDER TOOLS, BECAUSE ITS UNDER PLATFORM TOOLS. the update puts fastboot from tools to platform tools, so to get adb/fastboot to recognize you have to shift/commandprompt where platform tools are for it to recognize adb/fastboot and let you issue commands
There you have it..... maybe i should go into developing, i just got lucky with this, i hope this helps one person out.... rocking the new htc one s rom, htc evo 3d until the next 3d, keep the developing coming
awesome

What the Hell. Dude my guides work. This one however is the one that should be removed. This guide is a joke obviously you have no idea what your doing. When you say in your guide to download all the packages are you aware what's that for ??? Its for full on development. You don't need any of that for fastboot or adb. Unless your planning on developing all that will do is occupy space on your hard drive and a lot of it. Also you could have just pointed the user to newer/latest sdk that will put the tools in platform. No need to download the old sdk just to update to the newer one with a whole lot of installs the average user will never need. Your guide should definitely be removed because its highly incorrect.

You could have done your research before posting a guide and you would have known this. As far as being helpful your choice to post "not searching for a similar guide that may or may not work" how was that helpful??? Are you not reading your post ??? When xda member "ssojyeti" posted a link to my thread asking you to read before you post you chose to reply with a non helpful comment towards my guide. When you could have posted something helpful or useful. If the more knowledge, guides, etc the better then why not post something postive about my guide?? Instead you chose not to henceforth my reply. Also your guide is incorrect and instead of doing your research to know what it is your posting you half do it, throw it up as a guide and say its to help the community. Why not just take your time read a little and post a guide were you know what it is your posting about that way when you posted your guide the community would have had the benefit of the time, effort, and research you put into it to provide the best guide you could. That would help the community more wouldn't you agree?? You post a guide on how to get fastboot working and the way your guide is telling the user has nothing really to do with fastboot at all. So you sir could have been more helpful by taking your time to do the research, posting postive feed back about fellow xda members guides, and reading before you post.

I was using Kevin's multi-tool and managed to screw something up (my fault, not the tools). Basically, I formatted the /system partition, and it seems my recovery is gone as well.
My current status is EXPRESS PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.13.0000
It seems that if I could find the right RUU file, I could flash it using fastboot. The problem seems that I formatted /system, so there is no way to enable USB Debugging, thus adb doesn't work from fastboot mode.
Could someone tell me which RUU I should try?
GB and HC and HC to GB both here. Just plug your tablet into your computer and run the one you want.
Both were?
If you can get into Fastboot , you can flash recovery

I had S-OFF and CWM, then formatted /System. Then went back to Fastboot, did something stupid, and was stuck. Sadly I was also near an empty battery. Fortunately I also have a Flyer, so last night, did battery transplant surgery. Now I am good!

Due respect (and I do appreciate your work here!), but I totally disagree. The dev sub-forum is filled with people asking questions and help from the software downloaded from here, as well as countless threads about S-Off, downgrading, recovery from brick, etc. The multi-tool is downloaded in this sub-forum. Plus I suspect the people that know about kev's multi-tool that don't read this sub-forum is very small.
I could have posted in General or Q/A, but I doubt I would have had much response.

There are only 3 pages worth of threads and none of which are about troubleshooting a specific issue. You're not going to get much help if you going to be annoying about getting attention. As you said yourself, the problem isn't the tool's fault so it's not even relevant where you downloaded it. You seem to have a problem following directions. I don't think devs can help you with that. As for the proper RUU, common sense searching will find that.

I am agreeing with reefermattness. If you are having this much trouble understanding the step by step guides you need to research everything you do not understand before you attempt to root your phone. Not trying to be harsh but that's what the internet is for. We aren't going to hold your hand and teach you every term and show you how it is done. That is what the guides and videos are for. Sadly if you cannot understand that you should not even attempt to root your phone. Please do your research first.
If I remember right, 1.53 hboot means you are GSM. If so, I'd start here:

Here is another noob yD..Well, I had Xperia x10, we had "Flashtool", "s1tool"..and that's it ..You could do whatever you want..I have feeling that this is "same", only other names..But..
I am really trying to understand methods, but whenever I read something more about s-off, I am more confused :/..
Here is what I am trying to understand..
I received official ICS (I have HBOOT 1.53.0007), and I was on HTCDEV site, where I did all steps..and I have ULBL..after that I installed recovery and SU..I want to do S-OFF and here problem begins..I don't know how, and I cannot find how..I mean, I can find, but not for this HBOOT version..Someone says that I should downgrade, someone says that I just have to do "wire trick"..
What is your suggestion..
Thanks!
Ryan the link that coal gave you is more than adequite, it is as straight forward as you can possible get, the only addition to that is s-off is required as you will need to flash a custom firmware package sooner or later, so the wire trick is required. Zink had a great tutorial on how to do it but it has since been deleted. Can I ask, why are you so adamant in rooting your phone? A piece of info as I am a evo gsm owner, all the rom's on the gsm development section suck, either they bootloop, crash or they have missing components.

I suppose the first question is, are you on mac, pc or linux.
But either way... here's the simplified answer.
Your first step is to unlock your boot loader.
It's not hard once you know how.

Follow the steps EVEN if your on gingerbread.
Then follow this one...

There's some other ways to do this on mac too... but that stuff can certainly point you in the right direction....
I hadn't touched a motorola before, and I found it all easy. Bought it literally yesterday and had it all done last nite within an hour.
