Hey
I have done my share of search on the issue I have and I'm starting this thread only because I was not able to find anything similar. I've come to know that /storage/sdcard0 is a way of handling multiple user account in 4.2 JB. The problem is that my photos are here and there. Some bits are in /sdcard0/DCIM/Camera and some of them are in the normal internal memory.
All I wanted to do was to know how to access the /storage/sdcard0 path from PC. Connecting the CM10.1 running i9100 through USB to the PC didn't help because it doesnt show the sdcard0 folder. It does but the DCIM folder in sdcard0 in inaccessible. I wanted to have an universal solution (today its just a bunch of photos but tomorrow it might be something more important!) tot this problem and went ahead and installed "Android Commander" - a file explorer for Android in PC.
That gave raise to a new problem. My device was not recognised. I tried everything they have mentioned in the FAQs (which was not helpful at all) but to no avail! I uninstalled Samsung's USB Driver for Mobiles and installed a new copy of the ABD Driver through an installer. Now that its partially recognising, I'm not satisfied yet. I am able to give an IP for Wifi connection to Android Commander but it doesnt display the mobile files in its UI.
There are possibly two solutions for this problem. There should be a way to access it through USB like we do all the files that are in the internal memory and not in /sdcard0.
The other being finding a way to connect my device through Android Commander. (which says that I have to reboot the device to be able to connect and I have done that a million times from last night!)
Currently, I took those photos that are in /storage/sdcard0 by uploading to my Drive account and then downloading it to my PC. For someone who is from India where the internet is not so fast and there are limits on data usage, this is definitely not a long term solution.
It will be of great help if someone can sort this out. Cheers!!
UPDATE:
Just now found that there are a lot of files that have stuck in sdcard0 and they are not showing up when I connect it to my PC through USB!
So your phone recognizes the internal memory but Your PC can't see all the files?
If so then mount the storage normally, not as this mtp application. It should be recognized as external storage on your PC, not as GT-I9100.

The file manager that comes along with CyanogenMod recognises /sdcard0 alright. The MTP thing you mentioned doesnt show these files. And I tried connecting it as a Mass Storage Device and it didn't work. Only after that I came here
I thought somebody would help :'(

I also tried connecting the phone to my PC as a Mass Storage Device but that doesn't work (it tells me to insert a disk in the drive letter it just showed up - like I didn't).

So i was about to check something on the internet by using 3g data, but for some reason the 3g wasnt working, so i thought id refresh the phone by giving it a fresh reboot.
Upon doing so, after the phone fully rebooted, i got a notification in the notification bar 'Usb Storage Damaged' with sub-text 'Usb storage damaged. It may need reformatting'.
I have checked and i can access everything in CWM recovery, so therefore backing up the stuff i want/need shouldnt be a problem.
My question is, that is there a way to fix this WITHOUT reformatting?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Ideally copy off the data first so you have a backup then run chkdsk in Windows as it's FAT32.

Hi, I have a similar problem on my unrooted S2.. I have read that using chkdsk in Windows on an unrooted phone wont work (and didn't when I tried). I don't mind rooting, though I'm not sure if I could even do this while there is a USB storage error. I have hours of recorded lectures on my phone, and exams coming up soon so I am desperate not to reformat if possible!
I've been using my phone without USB storage for about 2 weeks now trying find a fix, and I guess this is my last hope, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your answer , But when I connect my phone to the PC and choose USB storage ,all I get is grayed out I and J drives.
how do I preform a CHKDSK? I tried running CHKDSK.exe but it doesn't seem to do anything (it says it's in read -only mode) .
EDIT:
I got it ,it's working again ,a couple of restarts and connecting \disconnecting to pc solved it.
as for CHKDSK.exe I copied it to the sd card and ran it from there.
thanks a lot
Hi,
I have a similar problem...
My SGSII battery ran out and when I started the phone after recharge, it started to give an error that the internal storage is damaged and also stopped to recognize the microSD card.
The microSD connected to the PC it is recognized and does not accuse error with chkdsk. I tried to format the MicroSD (on the phone) and then to mount it, but it does work.
Also, connecting the phone to PC in mass storage mode simply shows teh drive letters, I can't access the drives.
I did not want to format the internal storage before be able to copy my data, and I think the problems are related.
I managed to mount and access the internal storage using the terminal emulator (running on the phone) using the command
mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p11 /sdcard/
But the rest of the system does not recognize even after this procedure, and I don't know the command to do the same with the MicroSD; or copying data to a PC to then try to wipe or factory reset.
I've tried to reinstall the ROM with ODIN and did not solved the problem.
Also tried to install CWM recovery, but it can not mount / sdcard (gives error).
Could anyone help me?
Thank you!
Hi!
I've intalled lightning rom v1.1 on my previously rooted SGS2. I first wiped cache, dev: cache and did factory reset. Then, I intalled it via odin and everything worked fine. But I cannot see the contents of "/sdcard/usbStorage" anymore, either through "my files" or "astro manager". I can still copy files to that folder from my PC but I can't access it from my phone.
I'm not sure it is a prblem or not.
Could someone plz help me?
Do you even have something plugging in via USB OTG? If not, what are you expecting to be there?

Sorry, i'm a newbie and i don't get ur meaning.
I mean . . . I can see the files I put in that folder from PC, but from my device . . it is empty. It was not like that with my old official firmware.
If I put something into other folders rather than "usbStorage", I can browse them form SGS2. Sorry, if I confuse u.
Thanks

MB, I meant that the OP was confusing the 2, not you. From what I read you were spot on. The USB storage only shows files/folders when you connect a USB stick to the phone, otherwise it is empty.
What I think he's doing is connecting to the PC and connecting the 2 drives (int & ext). He then moves files to/from the external card. But then when he's exploring on the phone he sees the USB storage folder and thinks that's where the files are. But they are in external sd instead.

No, i'm not.
"/sdcard/usbStorage" folder totally lies in internal storage of phone(SGS2).
"/sdcard/external_sd" folder is where external card lies.
I used to put some documents in "usbStorage" folder(in internal storage) and opened it from my phone.(with old firmware)
But now, i can't open that folder from my phone anymore. I don't know if that folder is meant to be opened only from computer(in lightning rom). If it is so, its ok.
Otherwise, I fear whether I've made some mistakes during installing ROM.

I don't know why you decided to ignore the other, correct replies, including my own, but /sdcard/usbStorage is only meant for USB OTG devices, nothing else. Stop trying to put things in there unless you're using USB OTG. If you do connect something via USB OTG, such as a memory card or hard disk, it will show up in that folder.
yep mate...in gb we can put file in that folder....but in ics it only for usb otg.....before when using gb i can mount it in cwm and transfer files but now it only for usb otg. live with it mate, its not a big deal.
Is it correct that this mode is missing in S III?

I think it was re-added to CM9 for the S2 so you just have to wait for CM9 to come out for the S3.
Why shouldn't it have it, it has an SD card slot.

All I know with my S2 (ICS) is that it has MTP and when I plug it in it detects both internal and external sd with no issues.
My Note on the official ICS build actually has a mas storage mode, so this may be supported in the S3.
I just read it in one of the reviews...
BTJ
No mention on User manual..
User manual has several errors though, so may not be gospel. That said I follow a current user of the S3 on Twitter and he says the option for mass memory is not present on his, but it isn't a retail release version.

Old fashioned UBS Mass Storage mode is still available on ICS.

go to wireless and networks and there is usb storage mode my friend that was at the event said it was he was doing a detailed review for cnet
There is no USB menu item in settings!
Transfering Data via SwiFTP now...
USB Mass Storage apk is not working without root
i fear the end of mass storage mode especially for internal sd. if the whole internal sd is formatted as ext4 partition, there is no way for it to get detected in windows
Dropbox?

You have MTP, PTP Mode in Notificationbar when plugged to USB.
You have "\\Phone\" with Internal+ExternalSD available, but not as a Driveletter.
Problem: Losing Timestamp when transfering files... i tried as ZIP but when extracting with AndroZip or TotalCommander, the Timestamp is not set to original.
Think Root+USB Mass Storage apk will help.
this seriously sux. why the hell would I want to set my phone to be on mtp/ptp mode with inferior file transfer speeds...
Thank goodness I bought myself the HTC One X and my Dad's the one stuck with the S3 =)
Yes, it is correct that there is no built-in USB mass storage mode in the stock firmware.
I have been looking for a way to enable it too.

I reformatted my SD card to exFAT and then it was visible via USB, from windows explorer I see phone and SD Card
I'm not sure if it was because i reformated card or because it was exFAT format but its there and it now works!

Didnt get it to work with UMS1.0.apk or MultiMountSD.
Just plug into computer
If you're intention is just to copy/paste from computer, just plug in your S3 mate to your computer.
That's what i do.
How do I enable USB Mass storage mode instead of the stupid MTP og PTP?
Regards,
BTJ
Not sure if this works for the SGS3 but it worked for the SGS2:
Bring up Settings.
Click More… (under Wireless and network).
Then select USB utilities ~ Set USB cable connection mode.
Select Connect storage to PC then.
Connect USB cable from phone to PC.
Select Turn on USB storage.
That’s all.
Sorry, no such settings in SGS3, we are stuch with MTP or PTP... Don't understand the logic behind removing USB Mass storage mode!! Both MTP and PTP are slow as hell and there is no support for S3 in libmtp at the moment to make matters worse... If I had known this, I would have reconsidered my choice of buying a SGS3.....
BTJ
Like the Nexus, /sdcard is mounted at /data/media (IIRC, mount point could be different), meaning that internal data and the internal sdcard space share the space, rather than being split. UMS removes access to the device that is mounted from the phone, so it cannot be used when the sdcard is shared in this fashion.
I thought libmtp worked? I've been using adb and a GUI for shifting lots of files, qtadb
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Seems to be a problem with both SII and SIII... But I will check out qtadb, thx...

So am I reading this right. You can't plug a USB cable in, the SD card appears then in explorer?
I have a sensation XE at moment and use this a lot for transferring files at work/home etc.
So can I not access my files normally now that I copy to SD card, eg docs etc?
Nope... But it sounds like you are using Windows so then MTP will work, kind of like you are used to...
BTJ
The idea about using MTP is it allows you to continue to use your phone without disruption, loading Mass Storage un-mounts the sd from your phone.
However I do think we should still be given a choice
Yes, I guess I understand the idea... What I don't understand is why they have removed the choice we used to have.... :-|
BTJ
I stil don't have an S3, but am a little confused on the MTP etc. Also I use a Mac and a Windows PC.
So when you plug in an S3 on a Windows PC, what does it do in MTP mode? just still allow you to drag/drop files? does the S3 come up as another drive or something in explore?
Also anyone with a Mac, how does this work?
cheers
This might give us some insight on why no USB Storage.

I think I got the jist of that article lol but does this mean android developement were looking for devices to have either internal storage or sd storage but because the SG3 has both its sort of screwed things up a bit?
So UMS might be released in a later patch to allow easier access to added SD storage? Or does the current setting allow access to both storage thru windows pc?
Soz if I come across as a noob I havent got sg3 yet but planning to get one in a few weeks for upgrade and Ive been trying to get the low down on positives and negatives before I get the phone
Keep things simple!
Please can someone answer this simply.
Can I plug in the device into my mac/pc and just transfer any file to the micro SD card whilst it is in the phone?
All I want to do is to be able to put avi files on it as samsung kies or doubletwist doesn't seem to suppor them...
A yes or a no with and explanation would be great ta!!

Thanks for the help. Although I figure out what everyone was talking about.
This is how I did it (maybe this will help others noobs as well):
You will need the 'Android File Transfer program' --> google search it!
1.Connect phone to PC (you will see usb icon at the top of the screen)
2. Pull down the notification centre.
3. Touch the usb thing.
4. Click PTP mode
5. Open the file transfer program
BOOM! Rock on nerds!
i just installed an AOKP rom and when i try to access the internal storage of the device i can see that it is partially full but i cant seem to see any files inside when i open it. does this happen to anyone else? any thoughts?

USB Mass Storage, or UMS, was replaced by Media TransferProtocol, or MTP for ICS & above.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2OA31HWyKw&list=UUk1SpWNzOs4MYmr0uICEntg&index=5&feature=plcp
thanks for the quick reply, i was referring to files i had copied over to the phone before i flashed the new rom which i cannot see any longer, together with all the folders and stuff. does this mean i have to copy the files i want to keep all into my computer and then manually transfer into the phone again?
Do you have samsung driver or kies installed on your computer?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
yep i do, i installed the drivers off the s3 toolkit, thats how i was able to copy content onto the phone in the first place
install kies driver and android sdk driver
that will solve the problem of my files not appearing inside the phone after its connected? my computer can recognise the phone and i can open it up and even tell how much free space there is, but the inside is totally empty, when i flash back to omega the files can be seen again. im just wondering if this is a jellybean peculiarity
Install kies if you haven't already.. If that doesn't work, restart the phone and then try.
