Hi I was just interested in which way is best to root my device and why.
I broke my last galaxy s2 doing it via odin as I was unable to unroot it.
This time I have done it the superoneclick way and unrooted via ginger unroot app.
Yes I'm a noob and someone if any one answer will have a pop about which thread I should've gone to, but looking around for the last hour has shown bugger all.
I could'nt for some reason unroot with odin and am baffled why.
Any help would be appreciated
Regards Shaun
Root using one of the many root kernels.
Unroot by flashing a stock ROM from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Easiest way just flash CF Root via Odin. Job done simples.
Yes, I'm going to have a "quick pop". Initial search of Q&A forum turned up very similar questions, this is where you should have posted instead of creating a new one?

Answers are above, including the link with guides.
Hi I did this the first time via odin, but was unable to unroot.
I used an insecure kernal and had the original kernal but when I flashed the original kernal back it was still rooted.
So this may be a silly question but why do I need to flash a rom as some people seem to suggest?
Sorry to sound thick ( I am I guess ) but so much info has really baffled me.
I thought you downloaded an insecure kernal and flashed via odin and that was it, rooted, then if you want to unroot you flash the original kernal, use usb jig and job was done.
Or am I way off lol
Again sorry if I am that bad
Regards Shaun
If you flash back stock firmware, busybox and superuser are removed, so you won't have root access. Also stock kernel as part of the package will instal stock recovery.

The actual rooting process changes (adds) things to the system, that's why you need to flash a "clean" one to unroot.
The unsecure kernels only provide the means to perform the root, they don't do the actual root.
Kernels like CF-Root or mine (see sig) do perform the actual root on boot, but as said above, it involves adding things to the original system.
First and foremost, thank you all for your info it is much appreciated and I mean that.
But I am totally lost and still have a screwed of G2 in the drawer.
I have followed advice to the T and some how I am no better off.
I mean what has firmware and roms got to do with rooting or unrooting.
I just want to get to grips with rooting before flashing firmware or at least someone to say what I did wrong.
On my new G2 I did it via superoneclick is that wrong?

How screwed?
What does it still do and what doesn't it? Can it maybe still go to donwload mode (VOLDOWN+HOME+POWER when off)?
it keeps coming up with force closeandroid.com and has lost its signal for 3g.

Thats usually in most cases not following the relevant instructions .
This method works but if you cannot understand it then leave your phone unrooted and start reading the Guides and FAQS .
Root + CWM .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Basics are choose your kernel flash through Odin phone is now rooted .
Ignore the yellow triangle or just buy a USB recovery jig to remove it .

Just re-flash official firmware from Intratech's thread [ROM+Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KG, KH, KI, KJ, KK1/2/5, KL1/2/3, LA2 Download (mentioned in an earlier post).
Follow his instructions exactly, and you shouldn't go wrong
After you've further researched and read, follow the above mentioned rooting methods to the letter. Done

Flash a fresh/clean ROM like suggested in this thread, that should most definitaly fix that phone and get it back to fully working state.
So just before I do this flashing the firmware, just to make sure you understand!
I do the flashing the firmware as if I was flashing the kernal?
Also I'm on 2.3.4 will it stay as that or will I have to use another firmware for that?
Again sorry if I am getting this wrong and thank you for your patience
Get a USB jig.
Flash your stock rom of choice from the intratech thread.
Flash speedmod kernel or whichever you want to gain root.
PS. You shouldn't be flashing anything if you don't know what your doing.....

The intention is to get the phone in a working state, so you can just about flash any official firmware you like. Your Android version will also upgrade if you flash a newer package.
Good reports about XILA2. May have a few Italian apps on it, you may wish to keep them or uninstall later. You may have to flash a seperate CSC later, or just manually enter your APN.
Follow Intratech's instructions and go for it!
It just shows the Samsung Galaxy S II logo with yellow triangle and exclamation then a black screen???? I still can go to Recovery and Downloading Mode.
It is GT-i9100 running 2.3.5 Gingerbread from Saudi Arabia.

Did that. No avail.
One thing that I could add to my statement. This is a brand new device. One day old. I did root it from these instructions
software2tech . com/2012/04/10/galaxy-s2-android-4-0-3-i9100dxlp7/ (remove spaces)
and after that this happened. Whenever I'm charging the phone it just shows a green battery meter with some dots on the bottom. Then if I turn it on again it will go back to a grey battery with a spinning circle and after that the usual green battery meter.
How should we know anything about a method from another site ? Ask on the site you got the method from.
Alternatively...
Look for a kernel that matches (or closest match) your current kernel that you can find in settings/about phone in the CFRoot thread & follow the instructions to root your phone. Read the thread very carefully, particularly the bit that says "Help! Which file do I use ?". I won't be answering any questions about which kernel you should use. Read the thread & you should be able to work that out for yourself.
Edit to add - Make absolutely sure you have an I9100 or an I9100T, check the sticker on the phone chassis under the battery.

It is def. an i9100. I'm gonna try the fix from the Fix an unflashable or softbricked GSII thread. Would you think that would work? I don't want to get rooted now because all of the problems it gave to me.
Silly boy. I used superoneclickroot to root mine, very easy. Or use cf root again very easy, word of advice tho- you wont get much help on here if you got a guide/root/rom from some other website. EVERYTHING you need can be found at xda. We have some of the top android devs in the world right here!!!

have you tried flashing any ROM from download mod through ODIN....
Could I re-root again with Superoneclickroot? This is an unbootable phone by the way. Though yes, I could still go to downloading mode and recovery mode.
I'm new to the Android rooting and crap. I've been used to iOS, Mac and Windows customization so everything is really hard and my mind is basically all nooby on Android.
@zaheedahmed - I'll go to factory Android ROM at this moment of time until I could resort all of the issues I have.
If you don't want to root, then go back to stock. Search this thread, if you can't find the stock rom you need there search this thread. Follow the guide in the 2nd one to flash the firmware. If the download links are dead, make a note of the firmware you want (even better if you know what firmware you have now/the firmware which came with the phone) and search Samfirmware.com for it. Follow whatever instructions they have for flashing firmware downloaded from their site.
That will give a you a 'clean slate'/back on stock.

I have an at&t s2 I777.....it is rooted one i guess (it was gifted)..
I want the ICS on it...and believe me i know nothing about how to get it....
i googled and found many people explaining the process for a windows PC version.
I have a mac and if some one would please care to explain (step-by-step is much appreciated)..i attach the present status of the I777...
Thanks....
Senior members will probably scream SEARCH at you 'til blue in the face, so I'll throw you a bone since I've been stalking for far too long.
This (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878686) is a guide to Heimdall (basically Odin for Mac) find a kernal to flash (I started with Siyah http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19650906&postcount=1) and follow the Heimdall guide to flash to your GS2. Next you can download any ICS Rom (I've been using ShoStock2 since version 1.1) to your phone and flash the zip using CWM (there are a plethora of guides on this should you need it, so search.)
Check out my thread, no need for a computer to flash the update
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1722064
I would suggest you follow the guide linked in my signature. It has instructions for using heimdall with the mac.
Do *not* install Siyah 3.4 on your phone if you are running Gingerbread stock or modified firmware. You can not use an ICS kernel with a Gingerbread system.
If you have any questions or problems as you work through the guide, feel free to post your questions in that thread.
Edit: if you already have ClockworkMod Recovery on the phone, then you can just download the firmware distribution you want and flash it in recovery.

Hi guys!
First of all, I'm sorry if my english sounds wierd, not my main language.
I'm not here to ask witch rom or kernel are the best, just some help.
Recently I got an S2 - GT-I9100 with stock 4.1.2 room. I'm loving this phone, and I kinda like the samsung's rom even tough it consumes a lot of battery. I'm kinda curious about CyanogenMod and using moded kernels, but, I'm kinda afraid of messing up everything and brick my phone. Checked if I had the eemc firmware insane chip and I got it, so it makes me even more insecure of trying out new stuff.
Now for the questions:
I have this phone locked to a carrier, can I still flash it?
Can I flash it even if I have the eemc bug without any problems?
Can you guys recomend a really good newbie guide with each and every step to flash and install a new kernel? (I've looked around this website and the internet, but, those that I find kinda' dont explain everything in an easy way)
I've instaled clockworkmod on my phone, but it says it dosent suport it. why not?
Can I have a custom kernel with sammy's stock room?
thanks in advance.
1) Yes, you can flash custom firmware if your phone is carrier locked
2) Yes, you can flash your phone despite having a chip susceptible to the EMMC bug, which only affects phones running rooted stock 4.0.4 firmware
3) Do not attempt to flash anything to your phone until those guides make sense. Right now they look like they 'don't explain things in an easy way' because you obviously don't know a lot about Android, and in particular this phone. If you take the time to read/learn, the guides very quickly will become easy to understand & you'll know what you're doing. Flashing without knowing what you're doing leads to busted phones & dented wallets.
4) Without knowing exactly what you flashed, I have no idea. If you want to root your phone, there is a thread stickied near the top of Q&A that has all the info you need. It honestly doesn't get any simpler than that thread. If you don't find it easy to understand, as I said above, don't do anything to your phone until you do.
5) Yes, you can run a custom kernel with a stock rom

If you flash Philz kernal for your software build its a safe kernal from the brick bug. If you download the zip file it will not only put the safe kernal on but also root it. Link below

Hi once more!
Can I ask you for some more help? I read the post about philz kernel, understood what I have to do and I want to thank you about trying to help me. I'm sorry to bother you once more, since I prefer to be certain.

Baseband is I9100BULS1
Kernel version is 3.0.31-88955 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT KST 2013
Compilation Number is JZO54K.I9100XWLSD
So I guess the one that I need to download and install is:

XWLSD (bootloop fixed)

No worries, Im happy to help.
If you already have superuser just download the "tar" file and flash it with odin as thats just the kernal.
Your build is LSD, download that one. which is philz 5.06.1
Your LSD build is quite old, have a look on samfilmware for your region as im sure you should get atleast LSW. Theres also LSZ and MS1 builds out.
Sorry here is the one you need
http://www.mediafire.com/download/q642zb02je6l1bb/PhilZ-cwm6-XWLSD-OXX-4.93.6.tar.md5
Sorry for being such a pain in the ass.
Well tbh, this phone is second hand, and the guy that sold it to me, had a custom rom on it but I asked him to flash it back to stock at the time. it came with stock 2.4 or something, but I updated it trough kies to 4.1.2. I looked around samfilmware and I only saw the build I have right now. I dont think I can update it
So I only need to get odin3, put the cellphone in dm, flash the new tar and thats it?

Correct (4.0.4 being ICS). Even if you have a susceptible chip, the firmware has to have the bug which causes the chip to be scrambled/corrupted, which means anything before 4.0.4 or anything after (or anything custom for that matter) poses no problems.

You have been so far a really helpful dude, thanks mate! Was kinda afraid of posting something here, but turns out there is really nice people around here!
Btw if the mods want I can just PM you for some help instead of posting here.

Good work having a real go at it yourself, but honestly, make life easy for yourself & use the guide in the thread stickied near the top of Q&A. You'll have it done in minutes.

that's my problem, that thread dosnt tell me which one i need, or where to get it. i've looked at dozens of guides and cant find one that help me. the only thing that i seem to have a problem with is which one i should use, because i cant find the XWKF4 one.
Because you're running ancient GB firmware, update your firmware to ICS or JB first, then root. Instructions/links in that same thread.

that tool said that i dont have permission, which means its not rooted? why do i need a rooted device to root it? or im missing something? i did every step on that too...
edit: i had old version. but cant find new one (4.0.3) for SGS2, only xperia
I cant remember if Spockys tool needs to be used with rooted ICS or higher.
But if your planning on doing other things with your phone, youd be better starting off where Mistahbungle said(ICS).
Then you just root that and unlock. You read about using pc odin and get the ICS rom from sammobile. Then just flash a rooted siyah kernel,or something similar.
