This is a bit of a weird question, but its important. I'm pondering the idea of upgrading my Galaxy_S3 to either the S4 or ONE. Wife just upgraded her phone to an iPhone 5 for T Mobile and loves it. I'm an iPhone fan but I prefer Android much more over iOS.
Between the S4 and the ONE, which has better (3rd party) Android development support? This is important since I'll most certainly be rooting and romming it. Is the ONE just as easily rootable as the Samsung phones? What about bootloader unlocking, can they both be unlocked easily? Does HTC have support for the very popular roms like Cyanogen or Miui?
Also, does the ONE support USB Disk mode (connect to PC or MAC via USB to transfer files < - back // forth - > )??? This is very important, especially with a phone with no removable storage option.
Thank you for answering these questions, I'm really on the fence between the 2 since they are both similar in specs and both pretty damn awesome.
Yes the HTC One supports both file transfer,
The S4 will have more development but the HTC One will not be far behind

Indeed, It will support cyanogen and you can see it in the International HTC ONE development section not this Tmobile one. The brilliant thing about all HTC Ones is that the roms will always work on any variant MINUS SPRINT. So not worries about bricking your phone and such.
You can expect MIUI to come here as well. The Htc One development at the moment is slaughtering the s4 So, if in the future the s4 has more development you can expect it to be not by much....
You cant go wrong with the HTC one. Oh and with transfers and such? it all works between pc and vs. Even my crappy 2008 samsung s1 vibrant supported that
bootloader is already unlocked for HTC vs samsung youll have to wait sometime to next month for the developer found the exploit to release it to the public.
Hope I answered all your questions

I also have the S4 and didn't know that.
Well dude since the roms for the international version are fully compatible with t-mo and att versions the development is gonna be nasty.
development will be great for this phone since AT&T, T-mobile, and the international ROM's are all compatible. Sprint Users on the other hand though... I wouldn't get this phone if I was on Sprint.
I am currently using a great ROM right now (the one in my sig) from the international forum, just had an update this morning, and its running smooth as silk, no issues at all.
T-mobile's BL might be unlocked on the S4, but the latest OTA put a root-blocking kernel in there... and with Samsung being accepted by the DoD, it might not stop there. But given how huge that phone is / will be, that likely won't slow anybody down...

Hello,
I, like so many others am trying to decide between the Samsung Galaxy S3 & the HTC Evo 4G LTE. One thing that I definitely want is to be able to root and flash ROMS on whichever phone I get. I know that root has been achieved on both phones but I'd like thoughts on developer support between the two, and which one (or both) can be set back to an original state where it's not known it was rooted for warranty purposes. I know HTC lets you unlock the bootloader but unless there's a workaround it'll say relocked on the bootloader allowing anyone savvy enough to check that it's been rooted. Wondering if current root versions are S-on, S-off or either with the owner choosing. Or perhaps S-off is a must in order to truly relock the bootloader so it says locked instead of relocked. I also read in my research that you can trip a counter on the S3 the counts how many ROMS have been flashed... Although I also read it's possible to root without tripping the counter but if anything goes wrong, you can't reset the counter.
Now, it seems like the S3 would have the most dev support since it's been released globally but I'm assuming that the ROMS developed for the global quad core version won't be compatible with the dual core US version. Is this correct? Is there Evo dev community really committed so that I could expect similar work being done for both phones?
Lastly, I'm assuming that the S3 will have more accessories available for it given its release on 5 US carriers without any changes in the phone... Seems like a first for any phone but the iphone. Do you agree with this or do you expect lots of accessories and aftermarket items available for the Evo LTE as well.
I know that there's a lot of questions in this but with the phones being so similar, this may be the area that differentiates them. And I know that I definitely want to root the phone... No question on that.
Thanks in advance for any and all advice! I appreciate it so much!
my simplified answer is: get the s3. more dev support, more accessories, mor everything. you can flash beats audio for the s3 too if that is important. great cm9 and aosp/aokp support as well
Seriously?! You can flash beats audio to the S3? Will it affect all sound that comes out of the phone (phone speaker, hands free speakerphone, music, video, all of it?) like it does on the Evo LTE? That's so cool... Not so much that I'd want it for sure but that I could have one of the main selling points on an Evo LTE on an S3! Freakin' awesome. Thanks so much for that reply and info.

Cool. So, in theory, there could be 2-4x the devs working on S3 ROMS as the exact same phone is being released on 5 US carriers simultaneously. So, where most phones have devs from one or maybe two carriers... This will have devs from all 5. That has the potential to really make a difference and certainly add to the development synergistically. That's exciting!
Its gonna be like nexus development
But less confusing cause we have more subsections

As a long time basic phone owner I am finally decided to make the switch to android. I have done my research and have come to the conclusion that i would like to purchase the Samsung galaxy S III. However, money is always an issue and I am trying to spend as little as possible but get the most of out my phone.
With Verizon, my current service, the additional 720$ for the 2 year data contract is scary, but the phone, only 200$ is nice. My major question about Verizon is, is it possible to root the Verizon SGSIII. I have read multiple posts from outraged customers who bricked their phones due to the locked bootloader on the Verizon SGSIII. Also, from what i have read from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756885 it is possible to root the verizon version of this phone although it is more complicated.
My second option is to purchase the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and root this phone through verizon. I would love to run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on my device which is why i would like to root the device and flash something that would give me this enhancement. However, if i purchase the Galaxy Nexus, i am locked into a 2 year contract with a phone that came out 6 months ago and could soon be outdated by its "older brother" said to be released this december.
Which is my best option and if someone could please clear up the Root problems with the Verizon SGSIII it would be extremely helpful. Thanks for any response!
Best Regards

What are you guys talking about...10 seconds in the Verizon forum would turn up a root tutorial thread. So yes, root is available and there are workarounds that permit custom kernels.
Edit: there's a sticky thread in this very forum of how to obtain root on the Verizon gs3. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709

From what I understand Verizon Galaxy S3 owners will be able to root but not be able to flash kernels or use aosp roms like CM9/10 since you guys can't flash a kernel.
Unless you buy the bootloader unlocked Verizon Galaxy S3 from Samsung directly, you won't be able to flash kernels.
Again that is inaccurate. Using kexec we can boot custom kernels. We have an early version of cm9 running too. The real hold up is the ril which prevents the cm9 build from having mobile data

To clarify some things, since half of the users on these boards are misinformed:
The Verizon (and pretty much every) Galaxy S3 has had root since virtually their release date.
The Verizon version does have a locked bootloader (see #3), and there is going to be a "Developer Edition" released directly from Samsung with pretty much no warranty, and it will be completely unsubsidized.
The bootloader lock has not stopped us from flashing custom ROMs or custom kernels. See below.
Here's some source links for you, in rough chronological order:
The "Root66" method for easily obtaining root
Original proof-of-concept showing custom kernels can be booted
Standard install of CyanogenMod 9 via kexec demonstrated
Functioning 3G/4G data on CyanogenMod 9 demonstrated
Unofficial guide to installing CyanogenMod 9
CVPCS states locked bootloader is a non-issue
Ongoing research & development on the locked bootloader
I could go on and on, but as you can see, development of custom ROMs (both TouchWiz and AOSP based) has not been hindered by the locked bootloader.
The community has pulled together on this, and developers from non-Verizon carriers have been tons of help in all the progress that has been made so far.
Many people, including myself, do not support the idea of the Developer Edition SGS3, and I personally doubt it will have even a tiny fraction of the community the consumer version has.
wifi hot spot on verizon galaxy iii
My question is. Even though the bootloader is locked am I still able to get root access and use the existing rom that cane with the phone originally and add the wifi hot spot feature. If so where do I find the wifi hotspot software? Sorry if it is a noob question but this is my first post.
Thanks in advance

Please visit the Verizon SGS3 development forum, all of your questions can be answered with a little browsing.
In short: yes you can root your phone very easily. You can install Free Wifi Tether from the Google Play store, and it works fine on a rooted phone. Finally, rooting involves installing a "stock" ROM (i.e. the one that came with your phone), the only difference being root access.
I have done all of this, so has my totally noob roommate.

I thought my post was pretty clear that you can easily gain root access with the current ROM.
I don't know about using the built-in wifi hotspot feature, but I know apps from the Play Store like FoxFi work just fine, even without root.
The Kexec method is a bandaid solution that can easily be patched by Verizon in the future.

I remember the HTC Evo days. Boy, I spent hours-a-day browsing the development section on XDA to get my flash fix. That carried over with my Samsung Galaxy S2 and then the S3. Now that I'm considering coming back to HTC for a fresher experience, I found myself jaw-dropped at how ghostly the development forums are. I figured this could be a result of the phone being so young; so I went to the GS4 to see if that holds true. Wow... what a difference. Those forums seem busier than hell. And it's only been about a month since it was released as well.
Anyone have any idea why that is? I've been trying to convince myself to get the HTC One. I got over the fact that it lacks a replaceable battery, a MicroSD card, and recently, I got over the fact that the images are just not all that it's hyped up to be. I figured I'd be transitioning to the Moto X Phone when that comes out later in the year, so I might as well put-up with these shortcomings. But not having the development support that I experienced with the earlier HTC devices, and recently with the Samsung devices is just not something I think I can get over.
I am constantly thinking of the word "potential" when referring to this phone. What a shame. HTC had all the tools to flip the market on its feet, but it seems as if they came up short... again.
Check out the non-carrier-specific forum...it's pretty active.
EDIT: HTC didn't come up short, this phone is considered quite a success.
My theory for this specific forum being dead is that T-Mobile's national release of this phone was yesterday (06/05/2013). Before that, it was only available in their "high-volume" locations.
Oh wow. And all of those will work with the Tmo version?

As you've noticed by now, there's plenty of developer support for the HTC One. It's all just confined to the general HTC One forums, which makes sense, as the various roms can be used on the AT&T, T-Mobile, and international HTC One's. Most developers don't want to have to maintain 3 or more separate threads for the same thing.
As was pointed out though, if you're looking for T-Mobile wifi calling compatibility, be careful about the ROMs you flash. Since the 4.2.2 OTA for T-Mobile isn't out yet, no 4.2.2 ROM is going to support it. I'd suggest Android Revolution 9.4, or a similar 4.1.2 ROM if WIFI calling is essential to you.
Also, since a Google edition of the phone is going to be coming out in the near future, developer support is likely going to expand even further.
So I think it's safe to say you can put your fears to rest and buy an HTC One. I don't think you'll regret it.
Yea I've been hanging out in the International One forums as almost all their ROMs work for us.
This forum really shouldn't even have a development section since there's not really any specific T-Mo stuff that needs to be done.
Every single ROM in the GSM section will work for T-Mo. There isn't a single one that won't work. The only thing you lose is T-Mo's branded stuff and T-Mo's wifi calling (as they are the only ones who do Wifi calling)/

9.4 definitely has wifi-calling. I'm on 9.3 at the moment and wifi-calling works perfectly for me on T-Mobile. In the installer, just be sure to select T-Mobile as your carrier and it will install all the necessary files for wifi calling.
Also, note that S-Off isn't required to flash this ROM. All you need to do is unlock your device through HTC Dev, located at the HTC Dev site. I'd give you a direct link, but asinine restrictions in place on this forum are preventing that at the moment. Just Google HTC Dev and it will be the first result. You can't miss it.
Anyway, unlike with earlier HTC devices, this unlock method allows you to flash everything you need to update the ROM. Only some of the "black box" partitions like the radio and bootloader aren't flashable when it's unlocked with this method, but to my knowledge, no ROM requires that, and furthermore, the Nexus devices are very similar in that respect.
The only real advantage to S-Off is if you plan on flashing a different carrier's RUU, altering the radio, or changing your CID. Anyway, just something to be aware of.
Good luck.

Sweet, thanks I'll definitely try 9.4 then! Reception in my office all day is terrible so I'm excited to try wi-fi calling.
I think I understand in theory why S-OFF would not be needed. but the nerd in me wants full control with S-OFF.. Also, if I use S-OFF, i can return my phone to bone-stock and keep warranty right? As amazing as the hardware on the HTC One is (I've gotten used to sub-standard hardware with the Nexus line), I'm not 100% sure yet I want to keep it.
Any chance you could educate me on what CID is for? Evidently it may restrict/allow flashing ROMS from certain regions?
Also, I believe I have a basic understanding of what an RUU is, but could you elaborate for me by any chance? I believe it's basically an all i one installer for a full stock ROM?
Sorry if this is a bit off-topic, but this T-Mo sub forum seems a bit more forgiving than some other areas

It's worth doing to S-OFF. If you do, you'll have the ability to relock the phone and put it back to S-ON with zero indication that you ever messed with it. Also, CIDs are used to restrict ROMs from certain carriers to only be installed on certain devices. It's really only a stock or stock-leak ROM limitation, I don't think a single ROM in either the regular or original development section is CID-locked. Either way, if you are S-OFF, you can change your CID code to whatever you want it to be (the code "111111") is referred to as "SuperCID" because that allows you to in theory run an RUU/OTA from ANY Carrier regardless.
You are correct about what an RUU is. However, each RUU is specific to a build of Android made by the carrier, and so far, I think only the Sprint RUU is out. No one has a T-Mo RUU yet (but you really don't need one, all you have to do is flash the stock rooted ROM from our section here and then unroot from the SU app options).
Enjoy tinkering.

Perfect, thanks for confirming all that. I think I'm ready to get the HTC-noob stink off of me The phone feels so amazing in hand, it's making me look at all these Nexus devices (Nexi?) I have in a bit of a different light.. And once the Google Experience software drops, hopefully I won't miss having a Nexus as my daily driver!
You guys are so awesome. I'm counting down the days until July 1st now when I'll get my hands on my own HTC One. =)

You're going to enjoy the One. It's the first Android phone to have the build quality of an iPhone with specs that beat the pants off it
The only thing that sucks about the One is that because it has such a high pixel density, you will be extremely sensitive and aware of pixels in all your other displays (laptop/desktop/tablet etc).
I own an ASUS Zenbook, which is a 13" ultrabook with a full 1920x1080p display which is retina-levels of dense on such a small screen (I think it's almost 170 pixels per inch). The One? The one is a whopping ~470 pixels per inch. It is stupidly dense and I promise you won't find a single pixel no matter how hard you look.

I was able to dig up an old link for Android Revolution 9.4 but can't find a description or list of features etc for it. Are you positive it has wi-fi calling in it?
I haven't owned an HTC since the OG Nexus One (had all Nexus devices since) so I'm reading up on S-OFF etc before I flash a new ROM. I really want to try out wifi calling though so that's why I'd like to make sure. Thanks in advance!
PS - link to ROM if anyone wants it: http://www.androidrevolution.nl/downloader/download.php?file=Android_Revolution_HD-One_9.4.zip

Look like they took it down. I have it in my local computer here and I can upload it for you somewhere if you like. PM me if you have access to somewhere I can put it for you.
I'll probably be replacing the Rezound this year and, since I'm not "in the know" on a lot of phones out there maybe you can help me pick a good replacement. I'm on Verizon and plan to root the phone and install custom ROMs. I like the HTC One and HTC One Max (mostly for the removable SD). The Samsung Galaxy 4 looks alright, but I'd definitely have to wipe that thing...can't stand the Samsung interface and crapware.
Anyway, please tell me what phone(s) you would upgrade to from the Rezound and why. Thanks.

Right now the only phone I would go with is the LG G2. Decent size, amazing battery life, minimal skin... It is my #1 choice right now.

Hmmm...hadn't considered that one. Just compared it to HTC One and Galaxy S4 at VZW and I'd say I'll have to seriously consider the G2. Thanks! Any idea if there is a lot of ROM development for it? I'm on Tachyon on the Rezound and love it. Anything like that for the G2?

Yeah, lots of ROMs, LOTS, and many devs have moved to it (I see @Snuzzo just mentioned he is getting the G2 very soon for one). I am up for new work phone Monday, pretty sure I'm getting the G2 next week as well.

Just a question. With the lg g2. I've had my eye on it. I see with Verizon you get that crappy locked bootloader like every single other device on Verizon.... -,,,- but with that locked boot loader I've seen people say easy to unlock, not easy to unlock. Simple to add twrp. Pain in the butt to add it. I've read a lot on it. But cant seem to figure out :$ I see there's the Loki flash tool which is supposed to supposedly help "bypass" or help unlock the phones boot loader? Still very confused on that. As I said I've looked j to the g2 whenever I upgrade.... Although going to keep the Rezound and just flash stuff like crazy on it but with the rooting usually don't root my phones till latter (my means of root means going all the way with everything.....) I mean yeah just adding su is all fine and dandy. But I usually don't root and add twrp and a custom ROM till a year- year and a half or completely getting tired of it. Because after getting a phone because I have terrible luck with electronics sometimes..... I end up screwing up and having to get either a new one. Or get it fixed. Almost all the time. Soooo...... Any ideas on that? Sorry for the long drawn out question..... :$ and kinda being off topic :$
Sent from my Rezound using xda-developers app. CyanogenMod 11. S-off
Loki is a patch exploit to flash a custom kernel and recovery. The G2 can be downgraded firmware/rom-wise, so even if VZW patches it there will always be a way to root/flash.
Thanks for explaining that. I was a little confused. Makes sense of all of what I've read now. Thanks @Snuzzo

yep, right now the only one that supports sprint yet is ViperONE, because of the resent firmware update, we haven't got yet, but the first ones they put out prior to the update have sprint support, go to international thread and read up on it.

LeeDROID v7.6.0 also supports sprint.
Why aren't these roms present in the Sprint section I wonder? Seems odd as nobody would think to check the international forums.

easier for the devs to monitor one thread than a bunch.
Well they can do what Viper did and create a small thread with links then lock it
I blame htc lol
these forums are dead because of 2 reasons:
1) the M9 was not much of a upgrade from the M8
2) overheating issues
HTC took it on the chin w/ this one...

yup...I think a lot of people didn't see the M9 as a real upgrade to the M8 and only for those who didn't jump from M7 to M8 combined with the horrible press about the overheating (I've yet to experience) and camera (love the camera updates for what I use it for) and whining about it not being 4k (seriously, who needs that on a phone?) means it's not been a very popular device.
Screw 'em...I think it's a huge upgrade from the M7, especially the camera (even in it's original iteration).
Many thanks to @OMJ @benny3 and @chas123 for supporting this device.

This maybe true but another thing to point out is that this phone is so complete that there is hardly anything left to mod or add. I'm mean the only thing left for you to add to the phone is to add the 5.1 update to your ROM. Other then that your ROM is so complete its been on REV 24 for over a month with nothing else to add or tweak. Of course there is the point you already made that this phone being so close to the M8 that your ROM was already matured through the M8 days.

I could agree, but I'm still looking for a CM/AOSP flavor to rock on mine... And not to mention before the latest updates, we could still flash all those feature loaded ROMs. But lately, I'm hesitant to flash anything other than BadBoyz.

This is especially true when it comes to theming. You pretty much can theme it the way you want very easy. Im not a big themer or theme design, this latest Android 5.1 is very difficult to theme. Since its still new quite a bunch of apks are not compiling correctly and im not that skilled yet or have the time lately to figure out why, LOL. Other then the Viper Theming threads not much Theming has been going on throughout all HTC M9 versions.
You are better running badboyz for sprint, our firmware is extremely sensitive and with so many international versions using their base, our lte issues arrise of we aren't using a rom that supports our phone properly.

Traded my flex2 for a HTC One m9, rooted it, unlocked it, and then I installed badboyz the very first day. Love it. I'm so used to having cm/aosp on all my devices and I customize the crap out of them but I have to say that I have hardly seen any lag or performance issues on this phone. The phone gets pretty warm when doing heavy tasks like playing a game and what not but I don't find it any different then other devices doing the same tasks.
Either way, I love the m9. It's a well built solid device. I jumped at the chance to trade haha. Their loss

I will say this is probably the least active forum I have seen out of all the HTC's I have own which is every flagship for Sprint since the evo 4G (even going back to TP1 & TP2). That being said, OMJ's badboyz is awesome I have been using it since I got the phone. There is also no red text hboot and custom splash screens just like my M8 had. I like this phone, while really not much different from my M8 besides the camera it's not as big of fail as people make it out to be. I'm hoping the M10 is a nice refresh and hopefully HTC is done with trying camera gimmicks. I would like to see higher resolution screen next year & wireless charging.

The majority goes on in the overall m9 forum and not sprint as I guess devs don't want to check multiple forums.

I really don't see where development is lacking. As many have said there are quite a few roms in the main m9 forum that offer sprint support. If you look at the cm development device tree sprint support is added. What's missing?
LeeDroid, and Insertcoin drains horrible.......... lol any suggestion?
