[Q] In a jam... - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Long story short when I first bought my Note 2 a couple months back I decided I would try and root. I had never attempted something like this before and didn't make it very far before I decided to give up. Since then the phone has been fine until today. I got a message for an update and told the phone to proceed. The phone downloaded the data and reboot itself. This is where things get weird; instead of rebooting it takes me to "Team Win Recovery Project v2.3.2.3". I'm assuming I installed some type of boot loader that is preventing the device from installing the factory Verizon update.
Again I'm really a noob at this, and on top of it I really need a stable phone right now. Our family business of 45 years essentially burnt to the ground this past Friday so I'm running around like a mad man. I receive non stop calls and emails from contractors all day and really need to feel like the device is solid again. Help, please....

Sounds like u maybe unlocked? Not sure how far u made it.... first I would install goomanager from the market and open hit menu install recovery... this will update twrp to the latest.... next I would reboot into recovery from goomanager once there backup ur device on sdcard.... then I would try to flash the modded stock update from imnuts....to remain stock...should be fairly safe as from wut I read u only need root which I'm assuming u have if u have twrp...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2269736
Also backup ur apps SMS mms contacts pics and whatever u want to keep....
TaPpEd from my TwEaKeD N2
Or just skip the update for now if u don't want to chance it.... if u make a backup u should be ok tho just in case....

It wont update because you have a custom recovery, you should avoid updating to the newest OTA because all our current exploits for bootloader unlocking are useless on it.
Pretty much what happens when you have a custom recovery and you download the update is it tries to install but the custom recovery stops it, it will boot to TWRP which is your custom recovery and then go no further until to tell the phone to reboot into the sytem.

ROM Manager screwed up my Atrix

I have a rooted Atrix. Installed Rom Manager and tried to install CWM backup. I got the RSD 2 error message at the prompt then rebooted the phone. Thats is as far as I went.
I uninstalled Rom Manager.
My phone will no longer connect to my computer. I get messages saying:
Computer says I need to format my SD cards in order to use them.
I also get a message saying advcntrl4.dll is not on my comuter.
Root tools no longer boots up on my computer.
The phone randomly connects and disconnects from my computer.
OK I hooked up my Atrix to my laptop and it saw it, so the problem is with my computer which I can fix eventually.
I still would like to have a full backup image of my phone and I see little support of Rom Manager issues anywhere.
Any suggestions appreciated.
thanks
Are you unlocked? If not its quite dumb to install a custom recovery.

+1... happened to be the first time i messed with my phone. root and unlock then flash recovery... works fine afterwards. just be more patient and learn your phone and how to mod it....
FYI... its not RomManager that messed up your phone... it was your lack of knowledge on how to do the mods to your phone.

Do you have any idea how long ROM Manager has been around? YOU screwed up your Atrix.
I'd bet my life on your n00batry.

Thanks Meter...your comments are SO helpful people like you make xda such a nice place to come to. Do me a favor and stay away from me.
SERooted:
Thanks for the comment. I lost driver files on my main computer with disk errors and have replaced the drivers and got it to connect to the phone. So another problem solved tho the motorola media program is not working yet but I will get it going. The bigger questions are:
I am anticipating ICS update so I would not want to do anything to interfere with the next OTA update. If so, I can wait for the update before doing anything with ROM manager. Funny thing after I deinstalled ROM Manager from my phone, it was still in my startup....weird, but I removed it. Questiion is did I change anything by trying to run the backup. ROM manager reported that OTA updates were turned OFF. If I unlocked the bootloader would that negate the ICS update?
thanks
panflute
i am trying really hard to decipher all that, but there is so much confusion in your post. i can understand you really have no idea what it is you are doing right now.
A. you wont see an ICS update from Motorola or AT&T for something like 3-6 months, probably closer to 3 i hope
B. if you want the stock ICS from ATT/MOTO, why are you even messing with ROM manager? You do know what ROM manager is for right?
C. you didnt change anything by trying to run a backup, in fact, it didnt do anything because you dont have an unlocked bootloader...it basically ran a script that failed.
D. ROM manager reporting OTA updates were turned off had nothing to do with a STOCK ATT/MOTO OTA....it was talking about OTA updates for your current rom...which is stock, which rom manager doesnt have any information about in its database....because rom manager is utilized for flashing roms.
E. unlocking the bootloader and leaving your rom stock will not keep you from updating from MOTO/ATT later on....
i think you have some reading that you should do before you break your phone.
ok
OK Thanks Meter. That answers most of my concerns. You are right I don't know what I am doing. I remember years ago when things were easier to figure out.
It sounds like I did not damage anything which is great. I was just attempting to do a backup because I am a backup nut. I have a ton of hours into setting up my phone. So maybe I'll do some looking around and see how easy it is to unlock the bootloader so I can make a backup. ROM Manager did NOT tell me I needed to unlock the bootloader. If you look at my homescreen you can see why I should have a backup. I have titanium BU but would prefer a full ROM backup.
3-6 months for ICS is fine with me because I like my phone as it is tho I am always looking for ways to improve on it. So far I have not run into any walls...it just keeps getting better.
thanks Meter.
I know how you feel.. I messed up my back flip that way. I had the same problem. Unless you're fully rooted you can't install a custom recovery. Most likely you have a hard brick.
Form is temporary but Class is permanent. I love Liverpool FC.

Did you try reinstalling the Motorola drivers for your pc and then trying to flash the pudding sbf (only if u r unlocked ).
I did not get from ur post. Can you still access fastboot? Then you can flash romracers recovery.

Hello. I have a photon that was rooted and unlocked and all that. The thing is it somehow got the newest Motorola update. The question i have is can i reroot it. I would love to be able to run a different OS than just the stock one. Can someone help me here or do i have a nice paperweight
yes you can re-root it using the torpedo method. but unfortunately no unlocking at this time

What he means is, you need to be unlocked to install a custom rom with custom kernel and you can no longer unlock. You have two rom options while still locked, but both are based off the blur you already have. You can still root, though.
from what I understand you can use boostrap recovery to install ROMs. i've yet to try it myself but others have used it

Only roms without a custom kernel assuming you are still locked while using it.

thanks for the info guys, well i did get the phone rooted and super user restored, see the thing is the phone was flashed and programmed for page plus, its still running on page plus service but i had 2 problems one being the nag screen to activate the phone for sprint and its constantly in roaming, i called page plus and they say yeah that will happen and no i wont be charged for it, i would be all happy if i could get the roaming off, i did however get rid of the sprint activation by deleting a apk called SprintOMADM,apk. now im not totally sure i need that apk or not but its gone now and i have no nag screen to activate it, it still makes calls just fine but im not sure im totally getting all my incoming phone calls or any notifications for voice mail, any sugestions on how i might be able to get rid of some of this stuff, like i said it was flashed rooted and unlocked before, i did use when i first had it that remote squad software but now it says it cant even read the phone, i was also told by them its probably that awsome new update 2.35. thanks alot again for your responses and ill keep popping in and out of here to see more responses
well disreguard the last post, I had some app downloaded on my phone used to flash roms... well basically what happened i restarted my phone and the app booted before the phone started and it said flash rom from zip file so i selected one that i downloaded here, and thinking it wouldnt work i selected it and hit ok, well it worked alright now the phone says Failed to boot 2, and just shows starting in RSD mode, now im screwed, I shouldnt have done that, I figured it was locked and wouldnt work now the phone is broke how can i get it back just to stock the way it was or am i totally screwed

What rom did you flash and what little application did you use to flash it with? You're probably not screwed, we just need a bit of information on what steps you took.

well when i got that awsome update 2.35 from my son clicking yes to it, i tried just about any roms to get the phone back, first it was the electrify rom which i later find out dumb mistake on my part, anyway now and i mean right now i flashed the phone with rsd lite using the electrify rom 1FF-sunfire-user-2.3.5-4.5.1A_SUN_USC_19.0-19-release-keys-signed-USC-US..... from there i rooted the phone using the torpedo method, then i installed busybox and i forget which method i used but anyway it was all done in fastboot, once i got all that installed i downloaded a apk file system recovery which is MOTODX2_Bootstrap_signed.apk. plugged in the charger and booted up the system recovery or the bootstrap which ever you call it, and went into advanced and did a dalvik wipe i even hit fix permissions, i then hit go back and did a data- factory clear wipe, then went into install zip from sd card and i first used MOF.2.3.5.ish,v1.4.zip and that installed fine the problems i had was sometimes when i would do that i would get failed to boot 2 screen but i just used the unbrick zip that i downloaded here if anyone wants the name or link let me know, anyway.. once booted up with the MOF ish zip it would load fine but wouldnt save any settings or find any APNs or connect to any wireless networks in my house, but the wireless problem was clear it said error on it, so i knew the problem on that was it wasnt working derr. So this story is getting long now. anyway i then rebooted and turned on the bootstrap slash system recovery utility, and i installed first 2.3.x_libmoto_ril.so_198_7.zip and it aborted the install and failed. i then tried the next one in line which was 2.3.x_libmoto_ril.so_254_12.zip and that one installed fine so i rebooted and i got the failed to boot 2 screen and i did the unbrick sbf file on rsd lite and it booted fine, though still no saving of the settings and no wifi no cell service and no text or anything, I kept RSD lite open and i tried one more thing, 2.3.5sv2_198_7_radio.sbf and flashed it, the wifi for the house started working and i started getting bars on my cell service yay, well atleast i thought yay this is after weeks of not having a cell. well i thought all is well im done and fixed. NOPE im not fixed when i try and dial a number or even activate my phone i get nothing, no dial buzzing sounds like you get normally, no any kinds of sounds the call eventually times out and says called failed retry or cancel the call, i hit retry and i get the same thing. i even tried flashing the radio to 2.3.5sv2_254_12_radio. when i used that one it would save settings but i wouldnt get any cell signal or anything. so im back to square one. I need help. this phone is about 2 steps of getting thrown out the window. I just strated working again and i need this phone to call back customers and i cant afford a regular carrier so im on pageplus the phone was originally flashed through remote squad and worked great until i let my youngest son play a SNES emulator on it and it exited out of the program for some reason and it wanted to do the system update and he hit yes and it installed and screwed up everything. All i want now is to get the phone back to somewhat normal, I can use RSD lite, CDMA workshop, QPST, DFS 4.0.0.5 and a couple others if need be i can download anything i just need to be told what files i need and what i dont need to get the phone back to normal, cuz if i dont get this phone back to normal im just going to not get another pageplus card and throw the phone away and ill be back to not being able to work. thanks to all that has responded to the post here i really do apreciate the time you all have taken to help. sorry it took so long to get back to any of you here but i still need urgent help here badly please and thank you for your time to read this i hope i gave you all the info you needed to help me

Calm down, read the 2.3.5 sv2 custom sbf thread one more time and start from the beginning with unbrick steps. Everytime you do that process, you will understand it more and more and your phone will start to work again. Believe me.

Wow - just Wow. Unreadable. You are truly fortunate that someone actually read that and offered advice.
yes it was a long post, yes it was all jumbled together, anyway i did all the stuff recccommended and it works. the only problem im having now is, its still not lockig onto the right cell tower or something here where i live.
I Have tried Remote Squads Full Flash and other ways of manually programming it and for some reason I cannot get it to lock onto verizon towers, its like it has me permenantly locked onto sprint. when i drive down the road about 8 miles or so i can go down at the sheetz in my area and I get locked onto a verizon tower there but as soon as i move from that area I lose it and it goes back to sprint towers, I talked with Pageplus and they told me some stuff about what SID and NID i should have in but im not sure if the info was correct they told me they didnt know pennsylvavnia all that good but here is some numbers to try .. im about to melt this thing
Try roam control.

Updating crazyness.

I have been trying to update my S4 (vruame7) to the latest. I'm willing to lose root. The issue I'm having though is one that NOBODY seems to have mentioned anywhere: It started where I couldn't update over the air as the update fails. So I tried to update it with Kies on my mac but the program says I need more memory on my phone even though I already have it. This prompted me to unroot my phone and do the update again, but the issue is still there. So I tried booting into recovery and that worked. I decided then to reboot my phone and add CWM touch via ROM toolbox Pro. It said it worked fine, but now I cannot boot into the recovery mode. It just goes straight into ODIN mode and it won't prompt me to confirm it or not. I get into a very soft boot loop if I try and reboot though Rom Toolbox Pro to go into the recovery. I will land in ODIN and then unless I tell the phone manually to go into ODIN and then NOT proceed than it will be in a soft boot loop. So far I've tried unrooting and using Kies, Rooting and trying to load CWM onto my phone and failing, causing OTA to not be able to even start installing, and I've yet tried to go into safe mode and try to reset my phone that way. I might have to do that. if anyone has any other ideas I am open to that.
Your on me7 so you half to use safestrap that's the on way you can have a recover...... You probably half to Odin your phone back to me7 for the update to work. You can't use cwm or twrp on me7, unless u have safetrap installed and the its a version of twrp in it

Thanks. I've got safestrap installed sucessfully (it was so easy), and I'm now trying to install the update by wiping my phone and then doing it. I'll see if that works.
Well, it looks like I may have wiped my phone too far as I'm stuck at the Samsung custom logo and It's not booting farther. i can get into odin but I have a mac, so what do I do?

Use oden or Heimdall (guess its a Mac thing) to flash back to stock and then you can take the update. You haven't bricked yet but it sounds like you are getting close so be careful.

Sounds like you did a full wipe on non safe side "stock rom" of safestrap so your gonna have to flash a whole factory image cause it all gone the whole os
So after working for hoursx and hours, of working at it, I finally found http://sonofgeektalk.wordpress.com/2013/06/13/heimdall-on-a-mac/ <-- that webpage and it helped walk me through using Helmdall and it worked after much fiddling and discovering that I had to plug in my phone AFTER it got into odin but BEFORE I confirmed I wanted to be in odin. I then had to not wipe the phone clean but just do the install with the right files. It worked and I'm so happy. Now to see if I can update the darn phone. Don't know if I can or not but hey, I've got my phone back up and running and that's a GOOD thing.
I don't care about root as much as I care about getting the latest software if it provides enhancements I like, or security features I want. I think that root is fun, but it can be a pain in the butt as I just saw. Now that I know how to do the whole shtick, I should be able to do a lot more with my phone. I remember when I had to learn the ins and outs of my old Xperia Play. Horrible battery life and sub-par graphics chip but an awesome phone that had an awesome utility that could do just about anything with the phone with minimal work.
Looks like the system is updating itself just fine using OTA. What a LONG workaround I had to do. Thank you all for helping me teach myself a lot more about my phone
I'm having trouble trying to update as well. I unrooted and did a factory reset but the update still fails. What should I be trying?

I think the problem here was that you tried to take an official update AFTER you messed with your phone... you should take this as a lesson to always flash back to stock before trying any 'official' updates, or better yet just have some patience for the updated files to show up here on the forums so you don't have to deal with OTAs at all. I don't really see the big rush to get the newest MI1 update anyway, it really doesn't provide any huge benefits at all and plus will possibly void your warranty through that stupid Knox thing if you try to root.
One thing I've learned is use patients dont jump the gun and if your not sure before you do something look here cause someone has already screwed up so the right way will be here somewhere and video will be on youtube!!

TWRP (custom recovery) ROM of stock, pre-rooted PH1 update

This is a Backup of the PH1 ROM's system and modem partitions. This is a Pre-Rooted ROM with the SD Card write permissions fix. This is different from my other post in those two differences.
You will need a custom recovery to install this ROM. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/note...lipop-t3089382)
Always perform the appropriate backups and other steps just in case something messes up. If you are on Lollipop, you should be able to just flash and go without any data loss (except custom system apps), but no promises.
Extract the folder (ES File Explorer or 7 Zipper) to "extsdcard/TWRP/backups/[serial number]" then boot into recovery and restore the image. The easiest way to get this folder is to simply perform a backup first, then unzip this folder next to the one for the backup you just created.
I didn't factory reset prior to this backup because it's just system partitions, so let me know if there's anything weird.

Yep, just a security update most likely. Looks like some of the stock (Sprint) apps may have been updated as well . The update file was only about 190 megabytes if I remember correctly.
Quick question on updating modem & firmware.. I'm stock rooted ok2, and i dont have this update yet. I am working toward flashing the newly released and highly anticipated DL Modded N5N7 v4 which requires the PH1 updated firmware.
Do I need to ODIN flash the update files from the other PHI ROM thread or can I just do a full wipe and flash this backup with TWRP?
Thanks in advance.

You can just flash the rom you want and keep your current bootloader/modem. But it's always suggested to keep current with any bootloader/modem, that the OP mentioned. That way if there is a issue with the install, it wouldn't be that.

The preferable answer would have been 'NO' or 'I'M NOT SURE' as a direct answer to my very specific question... as I now have a phone that doesn't make phone calls.

Hey, I've seen you in a few threads and figured I ask before I made the same mistake. I'm looking to upgrade to DL Modded N5N7 v4 like yourself. I have a exploding Note 7 still and I'm anticipating being blacklisted at some point. As crazy as it sounds I like my Note 3's snappiness and everything else over the 7. My issue is my Note 7 radio gets 4g in my job and my Note 3 radio is 3g or spotty. I'm sure my modem and baseband is outdated and may help being updated
I'm on a older Moars Rom Baseband Nk4 android version 4.4.2. Did you figure out where things went bad. I was thinking of following these instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-sprint/general/rom-odin-ph1-update-t3463178 don't want to mess this up.
What did you use and what should you have used?
Thanks

My mistake was following bad advice and flashing the TWRP Backup of PH1 in the OP of this thread instead of ODIN flashing the full ROM-ODIN-PH1- Update- t3463178.
I was able to get TWRP to restore my backup to OK2. From there I did a full wipe 3x and ODIN flashed the full PH1 update, immediately rooted with CFautoroot and reinstalled TWRP 2.8.7.0.
From there I followed the OP instructions in the DL Modded N5N7 thread which require the ROM, Kernel Cleaner, MVNO Buzbee2, Sprint VVM, and I installed the DL MM UIX Kernel.
The ROM and kernel are both really well put together except my mobile network connection to Sprint has been intermittent... the phone was stuck roaming and was connecting in spurts with Verizon, sprint, or the network was unavailable.
I just dirty flashed the Rom, Kernel, and MVNO fix an hour or so ago and the APNs seem to be sticking now. We'll see.
I have three Note 3's and each has its own quirky 'personality'- not especially playing nicely with most of the Port ROMs available these days. Hope this answers your questions and helps someone else trying to keep their Note 3 thriving.

I am not trying to start any trouble, but from reading your comment it seems you are suggesting I gave you bad or wrong advice. So I want to explain myself just in case it was a misunderstanding. All roms are capable of being flashed with older bootloaders and modems. But the proper thing to do, is to always be up to date with all bootloader/modem files. This way you will not run into any problems. Now I didn't mention anything about flashing the OP'S twrp backup method. I figured you may have been experienced enough to flash these BL/modem files from a source like sammobile. Then proceed to flash your rom of choice. As you experienced you lost your signal. It may have been a few reasons why this happen. 1. The way the OP mentioned to flash wasn't meant for your phone. Every phone response differently. 2. The rom for whatever reason can only be used if you dirty flashed over your current system. This will not be the only time you may have to do it this way. So instead of being sarcastic with your reply, maybe try and ask the one who is helping you to explain themselves more. We are all here to help each other, and by no means was my response to your question was meant to harm your phone.

No misunderstanding here... I asked a specific either/or question directly related to the thread topic (twrp custom recovery version) and you either misunderstood my question or decided it required an answer other than a 'yes or no' As a result of your longwinded answer, I lost several hours working through how to get a signal back on my phone. Was pretty annoying.

I never knew giving someone detailed information was a problem. It's funny how I never had an issue with the install, but you did. It seems you lack enough experience to realize a few things. But I will make it a point to never help you again. Whether that's to long-winded or not for you, oh well.

Did you get it all figured out?
I did get it figured out. Wasn't much more than an unnecessary inconvenience that someone else might be able to avoid.
Ok, so something weird...
Im running KK4.4.2 with the NC5 baseband on Sprint.
I upgraded my TWRP to 2.780 to flash the recovery both first time 'dirty flashing' and the 2nd time doing a facory wipe.
I removed the battery after the flash.
When I reboot, the phone stays on the Yellow Sprint screen and the LED pusles blue slowly. So far been doing it for 15 mintues.
What am I missing?

Give it 30 minutes? It seriously takes a long time. Are you sure you want to upgrade to lollipop? In just asking because you've been on Kit Kat long after support for lollipop or this phone has long stopped. I'd suggest downloading the latest Odin and flashing that instead, unless there is something here you wanted? I'm rooted on PL1 and have no issues other than my phone being as old as it is and how many times it's been flashed.

30 minutes? Woah that is a long time. Ok I will give it a try sometime when I go to bed.
I am mainly trying to get the PL1 update and not mess with Odin if I can get around it. I would like to try and port the Darklord Marshmellow ROM and take advantage of built in google assistant
So I thought I would try them. And always get back if I need to but wanted to keep the PL1 modem updates.
I only have one problem with one other phone user... She doesnt always get my texts and I dont always get hers. I dont know if others arent getting them and just dont know but my 1 friend I text a lot so she notices when there is a gap.
Anyways. Just feeling out how I can maximize this phone's performance. NO plans on changing phones anytime soon.

I still use my note 3. Granted not for main phone as I switched to iPhone, but I use it every day. I don't really know the hesitation of using Odin, but to each their own. If you did decide to use Odin, I'd flash the ROM, boot it, go to download mode again, flash TWRP, boot recovery (so it sticks and doesn't go back to stock recovery), flash SuperSU, done. You're rooted on PL1. Hopefully you have already backed up your text messages and other various things to either SDCard or something else. I'm not sure if that survives whether you wipe and flash clean or Odin. Depending on provider, that could be your issue with text messages. If you're with Sprint, check that you are on latest PRL. If not, make sure APN settings are correct.
If you're only looking for Assistant, I had it running on stock PL1. XDA did a blog post about enabling it in Lollipop, so once you upgrade, check it out. I couldn't stay on Marshmallow. Being that these are ports and not specifically built for our phone, I ran into issue with every single ROM either not being able to place calls, text (MMS actually), or wireless/data not working. No matter what I changed APN to, I would always have issues. Some do not. I just can't recommend a port when they haven't worked for me. Some roms have been abandoned, which meant if I found one that I could at least handle, it was so outdated that it was unusable (issues had arisen and the developer had moved on so they weren't being fixed). By handling a rom, I mean that after I upgraded to iPhone, I only needed wireless to work (to connect to hotspot) and it not go into a boot loop or crash all the time (some do). Those roms I have no idea if calls or text work because I wasn't using that. A lot have issues with wireless working.
One more thing you can try is to do a flash, wait about 30 minutes. If it still doesn't boot, pull the battery and reboot into recovery. Wipe data and cache and reboot again. It should boot. It'll still take a long time. Make sure you wait the 30 minutes before pulling the battery (it should have finished upgrading your system by then). Do note that first boot from now on will take forever no matter if it's a port or stock. Lollipop and higher take a long time to upgrade. I've only had 1 or 2 roms take around 5 minutes and that's because they were minimalist and without Google apps. The phone does get a little warm and uses a lot of battery, so I'd keep it plugged in.
Please report back if you got it to work and how. Like I said, I still use mine. I still visit this forum every day even though I've had an s5 and an s7 edge. I love this phone. I need to get mine replaced because I've worn it out: broken charger port so I have to make sure the cable is plugged in a certain way and I can't touch the phone while charging, side molding is broken off in places, some of my partitions can't be changed which means the memory is failing (not even Odin flashes correctly anymore let alone custom roms). But, it still keeps on ticking.

Come back to Android! We miss you!!!!
Yes I am backed up and also have a Titanium Backup of everything so I am pretty much covered... I have even backed up the backups to my PC!
You have much wisdom in what you are saying. I thought I would play around with some other ROM's and see what the potential is.
I hear good things about the Darklord Reborn by Midevil and JCorderno so thought I would investigate.
I am not opposed to using Odin, but I was at work, and no access to a computer so wanted to see if I could do the upgrade 'on the fly' since I am already rooted and with recovery.
Man, waiting 30 minutes for a phone to boot sounds like a anxiety attack waiting to happen! But still wanna give it a try.
As to your USB port. Have you thought of going wireless charging? I did and haven't looked back! You can get a wireless charging back and a case that will fit at...

Clone Wars....
Just wanted to put out a big THANKS for this.. I broke my Note 3 after 2,433 days (long story) but had bought a stock spare on Ebay last year... Making the switch now, but your PH1 Flashable update is making it super easy!
To let everyone who needs to use this nowdays... you will need to Flash an older TWRP (I used 2.7.8) in order to allow the Modem partition to be overwritten. Then you can flash up to 3.x to load a Android 10 based rom.

My story of almost bricked into rooted, unlocked bootloader, and custom rom

I thought you guys might find this amusing, and hopefully it will help some people that get into a similar situation as myself. First, a little background - I rooted and installed Alliance Rom years ago back before the bootloader was unlocked. This worked amazing for me for a long time but I've recently had some weird issues with my phone so I decided to do a factory reset.
I went into settings, clicked factory reset, and then my phone got into a boot loop on recovery. I remember from before I had to do a regular boot then click recovery at the prompt instead of doing the factory recovery so I did that.
Instead of doing a normal wipe, I wanted to wipe everything on my phone and start from scratch so I did the full wipe (in what I think was TWRP or safestrap or whatever). When I went to reboot my phone it had a message like "are you sure? there's no OS installed" and I clicked ok. Well now I couldn't get the phone to boot into anything except download mode so at least I can use Odin.
I'm frantically searching google to try and find ways to install some sort of recovery so I could load AllianceRom again since I still had the zip file for it. Eureka, I found TWRP for my phone! I tried to flash TWRP through Odin but that doesn't work because my bootloader wasn't unlocked.... I remember this from last time ... all of the places I found online to install any sort of recovery required the phone to be booted into android.
So I'm clicking around and someone has a recovery randomly posted in a thread so I install it thinking, what the hell, what's the worst that could go wrong. So I install it through Odin and boot into normal recovery and I get this message saying my phone has been tampered with and to go to a verizon store immediately! Oops... upon further investigation (looking at the download screen), I tripped the knox flag... oh well, it's not like my phone is in warranty anymore (I got it on release day).
I search around looking for what I should do next and I found a thread that talked about being on complete stock, rooting, then unlocking the bootloader. I download all the files I need (newest firmware here - https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-note3/SM-N900V/ and thread here - https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...guide-ob6-of1-root-bootloader-unlock-t3439010) to go back to stock and flash in Odin. Actually I didn't download from sammobile.com because it was downloading too slow so I just googled the file name and found it somewhere else faster, go figure.
Everything seems to be going ok then all of a sudden FAIL in Odin... Ahhh what the heck do I do now? Try again obviously! Second try works woo hoo! Phone start booting up, things are looking good!!! hooray!! But wait... it's taking forever to start and it's stuck on the Verizon logo... uh oh... taking way too long to boot up so I pull the battery and try again. Boots right in saying that android is upgrading so I think I'm finally in the home stretch here.
I try to run the ArabicToolApp for Root but I installed the latest firmware which isn't supported DAMN IT! Downloaded the correct firmware (OB6!), flashed in Odin, same problem before where it was stuck on the red verizon screen, pulled battery, rebooted, finally time to get root!
Phone finally boots into OS and I get a popup "unfortunatley com.google.process.gapps has stopped" great... and it keeps coming up over and over again after I hit ok... just my luck! Reboot again to see if that fixes the issue. Seems weird that I didn't have to go through all the initial setup stuff I did on the other version I installed... hmm... or maybe it was because I pulled the battery on the red verizon screen? Whatever. I somehow manage to get to options to do a factory reset and I let the verizon screen stay on a while this time. I'll go take my contacts out and give my wife some love while I wait
Come back and the phone is at the setup wizard, this is good news. Enabled USB debugging, installed root, done! Thank god!
Next I want to unlock the bootloader. I follow the steps here which aren't very clear (I'm guessing on purpose for novice computer users) - https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...l/official-note-3-verizon-bootloader-t3359370
1. I installed eMMC from the play store to make sure my CID started with a 15, it does so I know I'm good to use the hack.
2. I installed both files in the unlock kit (adb and driver setup)
3. Fired up adb, navigated to where I had unlock_n3, and ran through the first part of the code once, reboot my phone, checked that the CID was the developer CID, and then ran the second part of the code three times before it worked
I verified the bootloader was installed correctly by trying to install TWRP through Odin, which worked!
I'm going to try out Jasmine Rom since it's a popular one that is on 5.0. My SD card only showed 30 megs free or something like that, so I formatted it from within android and copied the zip file over and installed the Rom through TWRP. Rom installed just fine, so I did one last factory reset which worked great and I think I'm finally good to go!
If you have any questions or run into any issues feel free to reply here and I'll try to help as much as I can.
Glad it worked out for you in the end.
From making a few mistakes I know that sinking feeling "oh no, what have I done?"
FWIW, the bootloader unlock method (in principle) works from nearly ANY ROM which is rooted - so, you would have saved yourself a bunch of time if you had started with that before you wiped the Alliance ROM. So long as you have root and a CID value that starts with 0x15, you just need root privileges - no need to return to stock and re-root.
(The "in principle" part is that there were several bugs in the "safety checks" portion of the unlocker binary that were sensitive to the OS revision, so you might have to search through the unlock thread to find a version of the unlock binary that is compatible with whatever rooted ROM is on the phone when the unlocking is attempted.)
good luck
PS The AryaMod ROM (w/ phantomOne kernel) is pretty solid - Marshmallow w/ S-Pen apps, too! As with any other dev ROM, there are a few sharp edges, but mostly everything works (except NFC).
