Some General Knowledge:
What is rooting?
Android rooting is the process of allowing users of smartphones, tablets, and other devices running the Android mobile operating system to attain privileged control (known as "root access") within Android's subsystem.
Rooting is often performed with the goal of overcoming limitations that carriers and hardware manufacturers put on some devices, resulting in the ability to alter or replace system applications and settings, run specialized apps that require administrator-level permissions, or perform other operations that are otherwise inaccessible to a normal Android user. On Android, rooting can also facilitate the complete removal and replacement of the device's operating system, usually with a more recent release of its current operating system.
As Android was derived from the Linux kernel, rooting an Android device is similar in practice to accessing administrative permissions on Linux or any other Unix-like operating system such as FreeBSD or OS X.

1). Can i root my phone?
To Root your phone go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36138808
2a). What can i benefit from rooting my device?
Apart from mentioned above you can flash custom ROMs based on your choice.
2b). Is there a downside to rooting?
Yes, you may loose warranty if you damage your device by rooting.
3). What is ROM?
ROM is the whole system on your phone just like windows/mac os/ubuntu on PC.
4.). What is CWM and Custom ROM?
CWM and TWRP are recovery, in recovery mode you can flash new ROMs backup existing or factory reset etc. Custom ROM are Custom OS based on existing sources modified for better performance and reliablity.
5). What is this Stock ROM/CM/AOKP/PA/PAC your talking about?
Stock ROM is pre-installed OS
CM is short for CyanogenMod, CM gives its user vanilla android experierience at the same time more options and customization available there are 4 versions so far CM6(froyo 2.2.x), CM7(Gingerbread 2.3.x), CM9(Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.x), CM10( JellyBean 4.1.x) and CM10.1(4.2.x)
AOKP is short for Android Open Kang Project, AOKP brings user MORE goodies than CM gives and it also gives the user Vanilla android experience.
PA is Short for Paranoid Android, Also like CM but it gives you unique Tablet UI (phone will look like a tablet) for your device even though it's just a phone.
PAC is combined PA, AOKP, CM. It gives the combined features of all 3.
6). How to install one of this rom ?
Look for the rom that you think you like in android development section and follow the instruction given by the developer.
7). So which of them is the best?
Try them all and don't compare roms people have their own preferences. when you compare roms some devs may feel bad and leave this device for good.
Comparing ROMs is very rude and disrespecting to developers.
8.) I want to revert to ICS after JB update, how to?

Hi Folks,
I create new thread just for easy that we focus on kernel building here and continue with rom on existeing thread
This kernel is almost all standard very minor changed. config based on "prebuilt" Q8650_perf_defconfig. ramdisk is from 408 firmware. I installed 408 rom by olleh (odexed ... duhhhh). No optimation have been made since I have no idea what should be optimized. Give me idea ... LOL
- download zip file from this thread > no heavy since only 3.3 MB flashable via CWM. Get CMW from TheManii (my Guru in android compilation). See the kernel version is x1123

what you get :
- customs kernel
- fully rooted system i.e you can do on fastbot $adb remount to have write access to device.
- suggest flash TheManii Streakdroid4-250 and immediately flash this kernel.
The main reason SD4 250 is hard to install is due to using a stock kernel, it's also the reason I havnt released SD5 250 at all (as there's plenty of alternatives)
If you're willing: just make a kernel with as little changes as possible, but with signature checking disabled for /system apks.
I dont think it's as simple as setting ro.secure=0 as I've made a modified ramdisk and it still fails on modified apks (pretty much every one in SDx 250 as I've added langs back to them)
I dont think I have the time to also learn how to recompile entire kernels, esp since SDx 25x is primarily intended for my own use. But I'd def like to release it with a modified kernal that would allow users to install it easier.
Hi TheManii.
This is my first time recompile linux kernel for android. It is really pain (comparing to recompile for PC). I will check and surf how to do your request. Just currious .. it is the kernel controlling /system/app/*.apk (?) ... need to check and learn kernel code then.
btw installing SD4-250 with default kernel I face FC many times when do setting on sound, receiving incoming calls, connect device to pc via usb port etc. But after flashing my kernel all FC gone ... I personally not sure it is because of kernel. But my venue now run smoothly powered by your SD4-250.
Btw I search on google and no lucks. How to get and add baseband (radio) file on ROM. I succeed to build a plaint rom can live on venue but always lack of GSM function. I dont think it caused by ril.d (ril_htc_d for htc) which is binary (?) or any ril_dell_d ... available
would you release SD5-250 ROM and let us work to do something to make dell venue have more options of customs rom.
Folks,
I can build a version of kernel-v4.06 myself. Run smoothly, no problem found so far. x1123's guide, if strictly followed, can bring such result to you.
It will be the best if you make it little under volt

So I just recently rooted and flashed CM 10.1 to my gs3. I have a few questions I would like answered.
1.) I have my device rooted from some .zip package (forgot what it was called) because I have mac/linux, therefor I cannot use oden. How would I go about rooting a new device like, a gs4? I ask because I remember the thread saying the .zip was discontinued and was to be used at your own risk.
2.) Why do I get a bunch of errors when I start up any version of JuiceDefender in the logs? Screenshot is here

- It says to get CM, but as mentioned above, I am on 10.1 and I own Ultimate version, get the errors with free and beta version too.
3.) Any known good additions you guys think I should add, or any other apps that could do better then my current apps? I have SetCPU, Adobe Flash (surprisingly works on 4.2.2 somehow) via installing a flash required app. Greenify, LMT, Clean Master, MobileCare, Ninja SMS, AirDroid, Everything.me Home, Quickpic, HD widgets (and the addon for it, asked the dev and they said they are gonna do lockscreen support in the future), the google play app that was leaked on the gs3 forum, ROM Toolbox Pro, Seeder, SwiftKey, Lux Dash, and Watchdog (paid).
4.) Is it me or is a dev lazy (no offense to you guys) if they say that rooting/flashing breaks his HTML5 app? I wouldn't see how that could possibly break it, and I know HTML myself...perhaps its just the dev or something root/CM 10.1 related? The app in question is Digimon Invasion, like the UI spazzes out when selecting stuff at some points and scanning makes the app reload as if I just launched it instead of starting battle.
Thanks in advance!
1. Read its corresponding forum, each and every device may have different way or package to root.
2. You better contact the its developer.
3. Try them yourself, something may fit you needs and something not, it depends on yourself.
4. Hnmmm, I don't know anything about HTML5, but from what I know the HTML5 is a web page language, and if it's web page, then maybe the problem is about browser?
As far as I know every different browser has different support ability about HTML5 , it's highly unlikely could be effected because of root or flash. In my humble opinion .

Thats down to the developer as to what they allow on the product some root fails on security issues .

Hello there, here i share some mods i made to the recovery installer and i posted on a spanish forum but i think it will be better if i keep it here on XDA. Enjoy
What is Recovery and what it does?
Recovery is a way Android Phones boot up, usually used for wipe user data. More often, it's used for "Factory Data Reset" option on settings app. It's being modified by users for have more features.
What is Bootloader and what it does?
Bootloader is a "Boot Manager" which is usually locked by OEM to prevent some unsigned operating system could be installed. Unlocking it is essential for install a system modification (excepting root).
What things can i do with recovery?
You can wipe all your data, the app cache, make a backup of your actual OS, install a ROM/Mod and,in case something goes wrong, restore your system with the backup made previously.
It's easy to do all those stuff? What should i know before doing this?
First: you should have some things on your phone, but take it easy. The only thing you should consider is: "When you unlock the bootloader, you're voiding your warranty". So, it's your choice if you want to continue or not.

About:
TWRP is an open source, community project. TWRP development is done by roughly 4 people at this point. We also have a large support community with many people who are willing to answer questions and help people with their devices either through our IRC channel or on forums like xda-developers.
Team Win was originally formed to work on porting WiMAX to CM7 for the HTC EVO 4G. After our work on the EVO 4G we wanted to work on a project that would work on more devices than just the EVO 4G and we settled on working on a recovery. Today TWRP is the leading custom recovery for Android phones.
A custom recovery is used for installing custom software on your device. This custom software can include smaller modifications like rooting your device or even replacing the firmware of the device with a completely custom “ROM” like OmniROM
You can find the source code for TWRP at github.com/omnirom/android_bootable_recovery/

@vuminhduc_1998 - @Caio99BR - @ensarman and me (a little bit)
FAQ:
This is like the installer made by @vuminhduc_1998 ?
Is the installer made by Vu Minh Duc, only i just updated with the 2 new recoverys and make it compatible with CM and Stock ROM.
It will work on L3 II Dual? On E431? on E430?
Yeah, this recovery installer works on: E425 (being f,g,h or simply E425), E430, E431 and E435.
How can i Fix the Aroma FM on PhilZ?
You have to download the Aroma File Manager and place it on Internal SD, on the directory clockworkmod/aromafm. Note: The file name should be aromafm.zip.
Change links to AndroidFileHost, except this, good, very good.
cool!!! thanks @ElDainosor!!!
Good job for this @ElDainosor. Thanks. Just one suggestion, if you can add what version of Philz and TWRP it installs. I don't see it anywhere on first post or I am blind.

MoKee Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 for Samsung Galaxy SII (GT-I9100)
MoKee OpenSource is the biggest non-profit Android Open Source development team in China, with members from all parts of the world. We follow the latest development from Google closely and improve various parts of Android according to the users’ habits. Being a non-profit organisation, we utilise our spare time and own funds to keep this passion alive. Therefore, the costs for the forum and servers are solely beared by us. In order to provide a good user experience, we only included a few preinstalls in the ROM. Along with the advertisements in the forum; we hardly get enough to pay for the bandwidth. The point is, those are our only source of income, however many developers choose to exclude them when releasing unofficial builds. Unlike CyanogenMod, we did not accept monetary help at the early stages, as in China, most people do not understand the meaning of “making a donation”. They would think of it as buying a service, which is conflicting with our objectives. Anyways, we still made it until today, and even started to provide third party developers a chance to utilise our OTA system. All of these are the fruit of our hard work and passion. We are proud of the happy users, and we are also proud of the support given to MoKee OpenSource. Most importantly, we are proud of the improvements we have achieved all these while, and the advancements never stop.
## NOTE ##
After flashing any Kernel or ROM let your phone cool down to normal temp. before you start using it.
Pls don't complain the phone is heating n lagging. Flashing anything have heavy CPU usage, thus result in heating.

hello sir from philippines here
is multi user enable in your build?
Hi I'm from Philippines too. I'm currently testing the last build for LP 5.1.1. Thanks brother for this ROM!
This is going to be a little confusing, as there is already a thread for Mokee here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...ives/rom-official-mokee-rom-releases-t3293584
Hello! Im new to XDA. I am needing a complete guide(s) so I can root my Asus z580ca table. I have been looking for weeks on various forums (including this one) and I have found some old guides that are very confusing. I am not new to rooting, jailbreaking or installing CFW on gaming units but trying to find a cohesive guide on this topic has been daunting. I have tried to root my Asus using KingRoot.apk but no luck. I get stuck on 1% when trying to root. My Asus is on Android 5.0. My goal is to root and update the Android firmware to a more recent version like Android 9 or 10. I appreciate any assistance I can get on this!!
To update Android it's not needed to get it rooted, but to find a
1. Custom Recovery suitable to your Asus device
2. Custom ROM suitable to device, what is to be flashed via Custom Recovery you found
Thanks for the reply! So how do I go about finding a custom recover suitable to my Asus device? How do I go about finding a custom ROM suitable for my Asus Device. Again I'm Looking for a guide on how to do this.

First, welcome here.
Second, I'm not sure why you have to bring all those statements "I'm not new to rooting, bla, bla" while to me, you're completely clueless, not even remotely can differentiate between rooting and updating your device. If you are really new to some area, take my advice, just don't try to show off. It's not a shame to confess that you don't know anything about it nor have any experience nor expertise in that area yet. Just be honest.
And now, for the answer to your question:
At this point I would just rather advice you to sell your device and move to another new one. Why? There's several reasons.
First reason is, unfortunately your device isn't popular enough to have a community to share knowledge or the works they've been working on. Why? Because a lot depends on that.
Before doing anything else, you'll need to unlock the bootloader of your device. If there's no official manual to do so from Asus, usually you'll be dependent on the community for help, unless you can find it the way yourself. Now, even if you have somewhat find a way to do it, there's second part.
The second part is: the device was released before so called "treble" mechanism implemented, thus giving you another hurdle. "Treble" allow you at least override just the system partition without messing with anything else. Newer devices that were released with Android 8 or above, cmiiw, naturally has it implemented. Why is this important? In case you can't any specific custom roms tailored for your device, "treble" accepts GSI which allows you to try another OS without other heavy duty stuff. Without treble support, literally you'll have to build a complete custom rom. I see Asus has provided the device kernel, so technically it's very possible to do so (although it might lack techpack, etc).
That's all covers about installing roms. Recovery isn't mandatory to install rom, unless your device lacks of fastboot (Samsung) or their fastboot borked (Oppo, Vivo).
Upgrading to another version is different topic. Rooting is also a very different topic.
