[Q] Issues with recovery button combo on a USA SGP 5.0 - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

I have a USA Galaxy Player 5.0 and getting into the recovery via the button combo has always been a pain for me and almost never works. When I hold down the power button and the volume up button at the same time to get into recovery, most of the time the device just continues to boot up. I'd say that for me there is a 5-10% chance of me entering the recovery when I use the button combo (even on Entropy's kernel). This is a bit problematic for me because every now and then when I make a kernel that doesn't boot, I have to flash Entropy's kernel with Heimdall and enter the recovery to get the device booting again. Is anyone else having issues entering the recovery using the button combo and, if so, do you have any tips or tricks on how to get it to work 100% of the time?

I use ROM Manager to boot into Recovery mode. Play store and free.
I sometimes boot via buttons, and it is hit and miss, so, if possible and not stuck in a loop, use ROM MANAGER.

Unfortunately, I'm talking about bootloops I can boot to the recovery fine from the ROM, but when I get bootloops, the recovery button combo barely ever works. It takes me around 15-20 tries to get into the recovery using the button combo.

I've tried that and it just keeps continuing to boot up, but I'll try again Does it work all the time for you?

If you're in a loop, it can be hit and miss, usually I just hold the buttons and hope for the best.
With the Samsung flashing, that's when I start to hold the buttons and don't release them until it goes into recovery.
Edit: after the boot animation the SAMSUNG flashes with blue behind it. Like it's pulsing. Hold buttons until the screen blacks out. Release buttons. Non pulsing SAMSUNG appears. Hold buttons until screen blacks out again. Samsung appears. Hold and release buttons after 3-6 seconds.
You can hold and release @ the first non pulsing Samsung but I had more luck doing it at the second.

Check out this video I made awhile back. The trick is 2 get the player 2 shut off first.

Seems like that'll have the most success to enter the recovery on Entropy's kernel. I don't want to try it right now because I don't want to give myself a headache trying to get into recovery on the 2.6 kernel @Mevordel, would it be possible to rename a boot.img to zImage and flash it through Heimdall?

I've been using that trick for a while now Surprisingly I'm able to enter the recovery 100% of the time on the 3.0 kernel but last time I tried during a bootloop it didn't work on the 3.0 kernel (probably because I borked the kernel).

Sorry for the lateness... I try to ignore the notification overload. Anyways, yes, of course you can. I don't know about the GUI, but if you are using the command-line version, you don't even have to rename it, just run
Code:
heimdall flash --kernel boot.img

Can't get into downloading mode

I had rooted my Tab and put CWM recovery on it. But then the TouchWiz update wasn't installing, so I unroot by flashing the OTA, then used Odin to go back to stock recovery. Now I can't even get into downloading mode. I hold the power and Vol down, it pops up for a split second, then goes away and reboots. Anybody got any suggestions?

As soon as you it pops up, let go the power button and volume down key. Then use the volume up key for download mode.

[Q] Stock Recovery Question

I was wondering if there was a way of going back to the stock recovery from CWM? I have rooted my prime and unlocked the boot loader. Was wondering if I needed to return the tab if someone noticed CWM that they may give me a problem returning.
if you mean returning to a store, they will never check the recovery, probably would only check that it boots at all if even that

Ok, thanks
Wrong actually. Use the method to downgrade to any of the Asus releases - using dd on the blob file, that overwrites the recovery with the stock one
I have to do this when going back to stock from CM9 since the kernel doesn't flash. I have to re-root and re-flash CWM each time since the blob method overwrites system, boot, recovery, and maybe one or two other things

I am not sure of the full ramifications of doing the blob thing over anything other than the stock rom. You will want to find the thread in the dev section that talks about loading any version of the stock rom that you want.
i believe applying a official blob file after being unlocked/cwm'ed will get you a bricked Prime. i hope none of you have a brick these days.
Hey guys.. I'm trying not to start a new thread if I can help it as I'm sure my answer is here somewhere.. but ...
Can't seem to boot into recovery. I installed CWM using the viper tool and got successful messages but button combo doesn't work to enter recovery. Nor does Rom Manager work to reboot recovery. I've also tried flashing recovery via RM and got successful but still unable to boot into CWM. Tried installing touch recovery via RM.. got succesfull, and it even says what my current recovery is but no matter what I try I am unable to boot into CWM.
I feel like its not installed but according to RM my current recovery is 5.8.x.x
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I had a lot of problems when I was on the non-touch version of CWM. It would do the button combo correctly but it would only boot to recovery about one time in five. Very frustrating, but it got a lot better when I chanced to touch CWM for some reason.
Gotta ask this but are you doing the button combo correctly? When you press power + vol down do you see the white text telling you that you have bot 5 sec to press vol up? When you press vol up, what happens? When I was having problems with this I would see the white text, press vol up then the screen would go black for about 10 sec then it would reboot.

That's part of the problem.. I have no idea if I'm doing the button combo right because nothing is happening. I've tried pressing power button and vol down until I see text.. never shows though. I feel a buzz or vibrate but no text so i continue holding down buttons until eventually i realize I've been holding the buttons down for a really long time and it's time to accept its not working so I let go. Ive also tried just pressing volume down..(thought I read that somewhere).. nothing ever happens but a buzz or vibrate. No text ever appear.
btw, thank you for the reply! you have no idea how many times I tried yesterday/last night. I'm up an atom, and back at it.. beats me though..

Unfortunately I don't have my Prime in front of me since I am at work so I'll see if I can remember . From power off press the power button until it vibrates, release it then quickly press and hold power and vol down. When you are on the Eee Pad splash screen you should some text at the top left saying that you have 5 sec to press vol up to enter RCK (or something...). Release and press vol up and you should be in.
Hit my thanks button if it works. If not, this is beyond my limited capabilities and you should find someone more knowledgeable Good luck!

GS2 wont boot passed recovery

Hi guys,
Late last year i sold my GS2 to a guy at work. Rooted and with a custom ROM installed (Cognition V1.5.1 - yes i know its old but its not my phone )
I've attempted to install RC1 for CM9 this morning however, I'm falling at the first hurdle. I've booted into Clockwork recovery (4.0.0.2). The menu buttons work fine i.e, up/down and power as enter but when i select anything it goes to a black screen with the ROM Manager logo on it (the gog and the hat) - but no options.
Do i need to install a newer version of Clockwork on the device? If i do whats the best way to do it? Do i use ROM Manager to update it as i cant access any of the menus in recovery (other than the top menu)
I've not seen this problem before as normally people are kept in boot loops or cant get passed a splash screen.
EDIT - i've just managed to get the phone to boot and its now running as normal. I'm just concerned that if i go back into recovery i might not get it back up again.
Many thanks

Can't boot into recovery

Well it appears I had a bad flash with cm10 and the inverted gapps. I tried holding down volume up home and power to boot into recovery but it just tries to boot into the phone. I also tried volume down home and power same thing. I finally tried volume up volume down and power and still booted into the phone. Anyone have any ideas?
Did you let the buttons go as soon as the phone vibrates?

Yeah I'm able to boot the phone. I downloaded a different set of gapps now that I'm about to flash. The good thing about CM10 is the extended reboot menu so I'm able to get into CWM from there. I'll post back after the gapps finish downloading (the USB hookup isn't working on this rom yet )
Well I finally got my phone to work but I skill can't boot into recovery when the phone is turned off. Any ideas? ;(

ClockworkMod recovery wont open.

So I decided to go ahead and root my player. Then I found this custom rom and followed their instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1517194
It keeps on bootlooping my device, and even though installed steves kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377771
(which contains CWM) I cannot boot CWM recovery from boot.
It booted up a few times in CWM recovery, but now it doesnt want to. Since then ive tryed flashing steves kernal sveral times to see if I can get it to work. It hasn't.
I really just want to get my device back to stock, I have a stock rom but it still gets stuck in a bootloop.
Help!

could you give more incorrect info, the CORRECT steps for entering CWM (or stock if not using a custom kernel) is to power device completely off, wait for the vibrate to indicate shutdown. Then press and hold volume up and the power button, once the samsung logo comes on release only the power button, do not release the volume up, continue holding volume up until CWM loads.

On my 4.0 US I don't hold the volume any longer than the power button to get into CWM--i.e., I let both go at the samsung logo, and it goes in.

That's how I always entered CWM or the stock one lol. It works for me. Also another way I did it was wait until the samsung logo appears and then hold power + volume up at the same time. I didn't let go of either the power button or volume up button, and just waited for it to come on.
Next time for a better result Go to a stock rom and Flash a kernel with odin. best way to Install CWM perfectly.
like Terra Silet, i have Gplayer 4 and Rooted This Kernel One Milion time
