[Q] Screen Burn-In - Skype? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys,
I have had my Galaxy S3 for around 4 months now, and I often use Skype to chat. Skype doesn't seem to allow the Display to time-out, so this often means that the Display is left on a static image for long periods of time. I didn't think this was going to be a problem, until recently I noticed that during one of the times I have fallen asleep whilst on Skype, the screen has been burnt and now I can see the display picture and Skype buttons burnt into my screen, and once you see that sort of thing, you can't un-see it.
So I was just wandering; Has anyone else had problems with screen Burn-in? Any ideas on how to resolve this? Would this be covered under warranty?
I am currently trialing an app that claims to fix screen burn-ins, but I am doubtful. Still worth a go non-the-less. I wouldn't be so hacked off, had there been some kind of warning from Skype or Samsung that there was even a possibility of this happening, as I was under the impression that this wasn't a common problem nowadays, I never had this issue with my old HTC Desire S.
Regards,
Logic_

Yeah it is Samsungs Display Technology it has the burn in issues. That is sadly a fact.

please ask questions in the correct section

In nearly all cases you dont actually see burn-in but ghost image due to display technology.
That problem also persists in Plasma tv's and old crt screens.
Such apps are usually capable of diminishing the effects to a level which is not noticeable.

I have the same thing - burn in on the screen - in my case it's from Opera Mini. The menu of Opera Mini in the bottom of the screen is burned in. Also I have burn in from Status Bar. I tried a lots of apps that have a goal to solve this but non of then actually did anything.

Like stated above it is Samsungs Display Technology that has those issues. IPS LCD screens do not have that problem.

Xperia Active Light Bleeding

I just got an Xperia Active Billabong Edition today. My problem is that the lower right screen is bleeding. It's not the screen itself. It's actually the blacklight of the capacitive "menu" button. When I set the screen timeout to 2 mins and the capacitive buttons shut off before the screen does, there's no light bleed. Anyone else with this problem?
Yea i got the same issue. I have persuaded myself not to look on the bottom right corner
I think its a manufacturer error...

Thank god. I feel better now that I'm not the only one. Which active do you have?

i have same thing......does not bother me at all.......
Same error here.
Newly aquired Xperia Active with bleeding light in lower right corner, and it really annoys me.
That an the fact that the phone sometimes, without reason, goes into a vibrating spasm which usually do not last longer than a minute.
And sometimes the phone looses connection with the SIM-card, and I have to turn the phone off, and the on again to be able to connect to my carrier.
So it's a common problem? I think it's a manufacturing defect.

Anyone else experiencing this? My seller said his last unit also has this light leak.

I see the same thing. I just decided not to care
Me too on st15i
I also have the vibra-spasms
I didnt have them on CM7 tho. I think its Kernel related more than anything,
Same for me - don´t think about .............
BTW - it´s a famous fone and really water resitent - i tried this out yesterday.
That's just terrible quality control! It's alarming.
Strange thing is people aren't bothered by the inferior quality of their products.

I've been checking for light bleeding on a couple of active's but I can't see any. Do you guys have any picture of your light bleeding's? I'm interested too see it myself.

It's quite hard to capture it on photo but it's on the lower right. It's caused by the capacitive buttons light leaking on the LCD.
It's very visible at night specially on a black screen or just when you unlock unlock phone using the power button from sleep.

Hey,
have you ever tried to use the app "Screen Filter"?
The app should allow you to turn off the backlight of the softkeys!
Can anyone check if its working with the Xperia Active?
Let me know please... i dont have the phone, but maybe soon i have...
Same Here, i think what happend on my active
Please can anyone check if the "Screen Filter" app works on the xperia active?
There you can choose "disable softkey backlight". With this option the effect dont appear anymore...
please advice
Screen filter and unselect "Enable soft key backlight" works well. Soft key backlight is disabled, also when unlocking the phone.
The disadvantage being that in a dark room, you'll now have to "know" where each of the three soft buttons is (which probably isn't a problem if it's your phone and you're used to using it).
Thanks a lot! Happy to hear that...
Is there a possibility to autostart Screen Filter or have you to start the app manually after a reboot?
Thanks a lot again

[Q] Auto-lowering brightness when sleeped

Hi, I was wondering why our Galaxy's screen reduces brightness before going asleep. If you notice, pressing the power button the display doesn't turn off instantly, but it turns very dull for a brief moment and then it turns off.
Can you tell me why? It is quite annoying. Other phones turn off instantly, like many HTC's I've seen. Does this concern the SA+ screen? Do you know a fix?
Have a nice evening (21.30 here in Italy)
Only just noticed this now.
Why does it bother you?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
It does not, I was just wondering.. I'd like to know if it's a software glitch or if it's something about the hardware.
I don't think it's a glitch as I've seen many gs2 do it.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
Yes, I meant a firmware/kernel glitch but no one of the roms/kernels I've tried solved this out :\

Strange white dots on the screen, dead pixles?

Hello
Yesterday at night when I was playing "another world" I noticed 2 unusal dots. The first one just above the search button does indeed move everytime I rotate the phone. Everytime I rotate the phone to left the dot appears but when I rotate it to the right, it comes back again, WTF? Anyone have this kind of issue? I have attached the pictures. Anyway to fix it?
EDIT: It doesn't seem to be dead pixles, it something else but I dont know what it is...it's moving when I rotate the phone and AFAIK dead pixles does not move.
Something else strange I have noticed is that everytime I close an app by clicking the "home button" for example Angry birds, the sound is still there. I need to close via the task manager in order to make the sound disappear. Not the sound of the game but a strange sound is still left
EDIT2: Is it possible that is water? Because I installed invisible shield some day ago...maybe little water got under the screen and is "floating"?
It won't be "water" cause water under/on the screen would never "rotate" with screen, I guess it's some "background" process that to monitor some action, and a minimum GUI was "1 pixel". So it a white dot

Did these dot only appear while you play this game or always on your display? Try to make a pure black(#000000) picture and view it as Full Screen mode, if it always appear, then it maybe some social apps or monitor like face recognition or gesture recognition services. If it only appear in these game, it maybe some social tools integrated in your games or cheating tools.
I guess it's posterior one, so just leave it.
If it's always exist, and you ARE a GEEK, then check every PROGRAMES on your Razr and figure out which/what perform this
If you're not a geek and it always exist, try to backup your system and data, then do a Factory Reset. Everythings goes well means it was some issues within some Apps you installed, If it still there, then it must been some issues in your integrated apps or some ROM issue
you can use es task manager's screen checker to check for dead pixels, it can also kill task, and manage startup tasks. I find it faster than razr's built in task manager.
I have no idea what that little white dot is, I also noticed it when I got my Razr back in November. On the bright side I can tell you that out of 4 Razrs I've had and my girlfriends 2 all 6 of them have had the white dot in that same spot. I don't think it's anything to be worried about. Also, neither me or my girlfriend use a screen protector that requires a solution to adhere so you can rule that out as well.

I just tried a pure black picture from the app "Dead pixel Detect and fix" and the white dote was still there. It is not just in games it's always there but most visible when there is a black background. I reall have no clue what program I should check, I thought it was watchdog tasker but I unistalled it and it's still there. I am using stock Rom 2.3.6 651.167.21.NonEFIGSretail.en.EU
Is there a way I can take backup when I am not rooted? I have not rooted the phone yet.

I'm beginning to think it's just an optical illusion brought on by glare and the capacitive buttons but who knows. It doesn't really bother me at all to be honest I just found it to be weird.

That means you have dead pixels. The other one at the corner of the screen is the shiny reflection from the phone design.
Bring it to a service center for an exchange, it looks like a big chunk of dead pixels at one spot.

Dont know if its worth exchange it and possible get one even worse..
I have emailed the store I bought it from, I think I now have had the phone in exactly 2 weeks. If its going in to repairs imo its not worth sending it. But if they exchange it then its ok. But the problem is I installed a Zagg shield on it...can I remove it and apply it on the new phone?

I don't know if you can take the screen protector off and swap it. I don't use one don't like them. Especially the wet install ones. Water and electric do not mix. Ever. Even in tiny amounts.
If it doesn't bother you just leave it. I'm just saying I wouldn't accept it. These devices are way too expensive to have any kind of defect however small.

I agree. I will definitely push the store to let them exchange it for me, even if it's one pixle a phone for 600$ should not have any damaged. About the screen protector **** it, if they exchange the phone for me I wont use one anymore.

[Q] One Max Screen Flickers

Pardon me if a thread already exists for this but I have tried to search but didn't find a thread describing this problem any where. Redirect me if you know of a thread like this.
So here is what I am experiencing. My One Max is a week old but from day one I have noticed that while i am typing a text message or email screen brightness increases a bit as soon as I hit any key on screen. Sometime it happens sometime it doesn't. I have also noticed that it only happens wherever key pops up on keyboard e.g E, R, G, O etc etc or it happens when I am scrolling messages or any thing which is in Black and White contrast (May it be messages or a web page with different dark and light pictures/rich text)
Mine is a brand new Stock Phone. No unlocked bootloader, or S-Off or Custom ROM or something of that sort. Brightness is at around 30%-40% in settings. Phone CID is HTC__J15 (Arab CID and International version).
I don't think its an hardware problem but wanted to share it with you guys and find a reason as well as a solution to it.
Cheers.
It sounds like your light sensor is adjusting itself very rapidly. I can't confirm if that's an hardware issue as your environment or fingers might have preventing light from falling on the sensor.
I would suggest you to ask a friend or a family member use your phone and see if that happens to them also, this way you could make out if your way of handling the phone is creating the issue or the hardware might be faulty.
Might be you were typing in a landscape mode.
When typing those letters, your left thumb blocks the light sensor.
If yes, then I would think It is normal.
It is just how do we use this beast.

I agree. This flickering doesn't matter to me too because this phone has so much more to offer that bit of a flickering wont bother me at all. I bought Note 3 for $710 and sold it right after 10 days for $600 because I didn't like touchwiz at all. But this One Max is an ultimate phone for me for next two years I believe
I've noticed it but only in low light situations. I just set my brightness at night or in dark places to eliminate the issue.

I have this too..... Just when brightness is from 0 - 24 % ( if flickers) (by higher back-light it is away - but it sucks, when you wanna watch movies in night You think it is a thing for reclamation? And have you too that the upperside of the lcd below the sensors and front camera is more white (from the back-light) than the lower side cca 1cm by the hardware buttons? you can see it in white background by web browsing.... etc...

No, I haven't noticed any brighter spot under front Cam or over hardware buttons. Don't have this problem at least in my phone but yes flickering is something that I notice regularly.
Its not something which bothers me in a great deal but I believe we must get a perfect product because we spend a serious amount of money at the time of purchase. In my country HTC One Max is for $700 and I believe this is a lot of money to spend on a phone at least.

It is on my phone bad back-light. (on upper-side you can see more white light from the light-tube... or what is there, down by hardware-buttons is instead less light it seems like burned out)
These two things with flickers - flickers less than the back-light worry's me.
You think it can be solved by reclamation on warranty repair. (i´m afraid that they say, ... this is normal by these kind of lcd) and they do nothing...
But i will it send because we are customers, and we payed not for a brick bud for high tech.... so i hope it well be good.

I certainly believe that this must be covered in warranty. None of us paid that much of an amount to own a faulty handset. If they tell you that all units are like that then you should take your money back and look for any other phone. My brother owns HTC One, my wife has HTC One X and they don't have this faulty backlight issue then how come it can be a default feature in HTC One Max.

I noticed this to be the case on my One Max the first couple of weeks playing with it. i noticed at times the screen would get dimmer and dimmer. While it wasn't ovewhelmingly annoying, I decided to disable automatic brightness in settings-brightness and all my screen troubles went away! :victory:

In your video I can see that screen brightness changes and that happens to me too. This happens when webpage or movie has different Black and White contrast and screen goes kind of crazy as what it should do and there it starts kind of flickering. However, Screen Backlight Tubes problem in those photos that you posted earlier, I dont have that issue in my phone atleast. I belive that is something you should get your Unit fixed/replaced from HTC.

I newer wanted samsung because of their amoled displays with they burnout - i had this on my phone on samsung omnia with windows mobile..... and the reclamation was a walk through the valley of darkness .... on the end, they told me ... that the oled-lcd how i have it on my phone is normal ... and there is nothing to repair .... Screen Burn?

Hello.
Today i noticed that my main screen has a burn in.
I used AMOLED Burn in fix and i can see the message bar from whatsapp and also the bottom screen buttons etc.

But why can I see whatsapp text entry bar thing on the grey background. And also the home/back buttons etc
LCD does not burn in. I don't know what you could be seeing, but it seems very highly unlikely.

I've had this problem for a few days about 2 weeks ago, I could still see AT&T in the top corner. It did look like it was burned in but I knew it wasn't since it's LCD so I didn't worry about it too much. It randomly fixed itself. I wonder what caused it.
I have the same exact problem. And it heals itself but 5 mins of whatsapp use and there it is again. It is so annoying. I m thinking of returning it!
I would suggest to get rid of what's app. That seems to be the common cause for the majority here. Could be what's app is bad app to run on V10
If you dont call this a screen burn then what is it:

Grey background to show effect
This won't be too helpful since I can't remember for sure what I was looking at when it happened but...
Earlier today I noticed that my keyboard was showing "in the background" of an app as though it was burned in.
It was definitely strange looking.
I think it was the weather channel app (which had no need for a keyboard popup) yet it almost looked like the app was transparent with the keyboard behind it.
It's definitely not doing it now but it was really weird looking!

Guys please relax that's just image retention as far as LCDs are the topic. Unless if you stay at the same thing for like 5 hours (this [might] cause a permanent retention i guess).
the only thing that is prone to burn ins are OLED screens. And burn ins are permanent... because they are a burn.
LCDs only retain images because the crystals in their display tends to stay at the same position they are in after a long period of use but this doesn't actually produce damage and doesn't stay permanently. Once the display changes (either turned off or a different thing is displayed) they would eventually return to their normal state and work just fine.
Interesting. I wasn't really "unrelaxed" though... Just never saw it before so I figured I'd share my experience.

I just noticed a burn-in, or some kind of image retention. I accidentally left my phone on all night while sleeping and the next morning there was a burn in on the top of the screen. It's only noticible when I pull down the notification bar because it's gray. I can only see it in the gray. The whole status bar is burned-in. It has been gradually dissipating. I also noticed a little bit of this when I used Waze for a long road trip a couple weeks ago, but it wasn't as severe of a burn in. At least it is disappearing slowly.

Same happened to me today. Slept through an amber alert that caused my screen to stay on. When i woke up my phone was off and hot to the touch. Switched batteries and noticed after powering on the amber alert was still faintly visible in the backgound. After about 10 minutes of screen use it gradually faded away.

Apparently officially termed "image persistence". Your post recreates a lot of the language from that article. Yeah, LCDs don't burn-in so this topic seemed rather odd to me. What could start showing up is the "dynamic contrast" done with LED backlights to LCDs burning-in; the fact that I've never heard any reports may mean it is uncommon, but I'm cringing at it happening in the future.

Or image retention. It does go away though. Maybe a bad batch too? I drive from Ohio to Orlando, FL with Google maps on the entire time and bendy had a retention issue. All the ones with the issue also said the screen was hot. Corks that be a factor?

I have had my V10 since December (from T-Mobile). Initially no problems to report, but the image retention issue has become progressively worse (as I type this, the image of this site is being temporarily "burned in"). my father also got a V10 the same day, but does not report this issue. User activity may be leading to a faster declining lifespan of phone, but both phones have had a drastic increase in overheating since receiving the Marshmallow update, which may also be playing a role in the even greater amounts of image retention (a single game of candy crush leaves a residual image).
I'm 19, so like most millennials, I use my phone constantly which is possibly why I have this issue, but it is unfortunate to think there's a chance my phone is slowly dying from general use.
same issue with my v10 (bought a month back)
i think my culprit is Deer hunter 2016...as its the only game i play& only notice it more once i have played it.. i have also seen that if i keep my phone off during the night.. it usually goes away.. while if my phone is ON (standyby) during the night.. it stays. i didnt turned my phone off for the past 2 nights & the burn is pretty much there as you can see. my phone is an ATT v10 h900 on lollypop.. any suggestion will be appreciated.
