Here's a sure way to root without bricking:
1. Search for "root i9100 4.0.4".
2. Read those threads completely.
3. Search for "emmc brickbug".
4. Read those threads completely.
5. Read about "flashing via odin" and "siyah kernel".
6. Read about "recovery and download" modes.
7. Flash siyah v5.0.1 via Odin.

Thanks for your help man...From your steps i think that i should first download and Flash CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar file.In my case this file CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LPJ-v5.3-CWM5.zip from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399.
As for emmc brickbug,i checked through emmc brickbug check app,it says sane chip..
I know about fashing via odin.i had flash official firmware before..
And i now know about recovery and download modes. Then what should i flash then cf-root or siyah kernel... or both. And other thing i forget to mention its uk version with t-mobile carrier...

You're thinking of the SGH-T989 which was sold by T-Mobile in the US, those sold in the UK are I9100's. Using Siyah in this instance is fine.

And should i be able to flash any other ROM after rooting.. through siyah?

Yes. You'll have a rooted phone + CWM & you'll be able to flash whatever you want from there/backup/restore quickly & easily.

After rooting,First i should backup, right? And a question was can i unroot back to the same normal stage?

Yep. As soon as you root the phone, do a nandroid backup thru CWRecovery, and also do an EFS backup (can't stress enough how important this is); get kTool from the thread on here (search for it) or Google Play, keep one copy of the EFS backup on your PC/somewhere away from the phone and another on your external SD card if you have one in your phone.
Edit - For anyone who doesn't get why an EFS backup is so important, read this thread. Whole thing could have been avoided by having a backup, and unless this is the transient firmware related thing that causes the IMEI to disappear sporadically & re-appear, this guy will be making a trip to a service centre.

Suggestion after u flash siyah and root ur device
Flash mcm siyah 17 / 2 through cwm its very goood performance wise as well as very stable
Rom : MIUI V5
Kernel : HIROX V5 INTENSIVE

No, your nandroid backup doesn't contain kernel backup, so backing up is actually not necessary, but sometimes an other kernel can be incompatible with your rom and will result in a bootloop no matter what you do so you will have to re flash the original kernel that came with the rom or flash another possibly compatible kernel.

What is my original kernel? How do i know that? Is it BVLPJ...?

Dude u can flash kernel any number of time no need of backing up.to flash kernel follow this step
Download kernel wipe and save it in sd card
Download the kernel u want
Goto cwm recovery
Install from sd card
Than install kernel wipe (it wipe ur previous kernel data and settings)
Than install kernel and reboot
Thats it
For link just type mcm siyah 17/2
IMPORTANT Before flashing any kernel check if the kernel is compatible with ics
Y r u still on ics?? mm Curios
Rom : MIUI V5
Kernel : HIROX V5 INTENSIVE

And you two had to go and confuse the **** out of her why exactly ? She asked how to root the phone, she got clear/concise info on how to do that plus advice to backup. Then you clowns had to unnecessarily put your two bob in & tell her she should be flashing blah blah blah.
Bottom line is, you don't need to flash anything else from this point on if you don't want to.
I strongly suggest you read up on a bunch of roms and/or kernels in the development sections; reading the first couple of pages & say, the last 20 pages of a thread will give you the instructions for flashing that particular rom or kernel (always on the first page & always very clear), the features & what roms/Android versions it's compatible with, and also people's experiences with recent builds of the rom/kernel. Then you can make a decision on a rom/kernel to try with eyes open rather than guessing & relying on poor quality instructions on what you should be doing/how to do it.
Edit - And a nandroid doesn't backup a kernel; oh really ? Um yeah, it does, because a nandroid is a precise snapshot of your phone at the time you take it. The only things that don't get backed up are the modem & your external SD card.

But now i am thinking of flashing jelly bean neatrom lite....Need a suggestion here please which should be good...

Rom suggestions/recommendations are forbidden here for a whole host of reasons (there's a stickied thread at the top of Q&A with exactly why), and that's why I said what I said in my last post about reading up.

Root Advice - Little help needed

First, I apologize for starting a new thread on this subject.:fingers-crossed:
I just bought my Galaxy S II and I wanna root it,but I'm a little unsure about the whole process.
I also got a VYL00M emmc chip, which is vulnerable,but I'm on 4.0.3 i9100BVLPB.
Here are my thoughts and my questions :
If I flash via ODIN the coresponding CF-root kernel.
But then do I need to flash Syiah kernel through the CWM that comes with CF kernel so I can safely wipe and avoid brickbug?
I hope someone can provide a little aditional information and guide me through the process:angel:
Cheers

ICS 4.0.3 firmware is not affected by the brick bug.
However, you still need to post your ROM and kernel details. Goto Settings - About phone, and post everything you see

1.
Like i said earlier, you are safe from the brick bug because you are running 4.0.3 firmware.
The brick bug only affects 4.0.4 firmware.
2.
To ROOT your device only, you don't need to flash any kernel.

Hi
I have the same phone details as the OP. a UK T-mobile running ICS 4.0.3 i9100 BVLPD
I rooted my phone the other day by the simple method in link above... BUT isn't this method of rooting limited ?
I would like to root my phone fully using an insecure kernel & Odin but i dont know where to get the correct kernel for my phone, i need an insecure & original secure kernel to do this right ?
Sorry for my nuwbness questions.
Peace
What are you talking about "limited" and "fully".Its either rooted or it aint.
That method doesnt give you CWM,if thats what you mean. You can just flash a custom kernel that contains CWM if you want.
Isn't exynos abuse the faster way to get rooted?

Ok, my bad, i am a nubie after all . i thought i'd read somewhere that this method was limited in some way.
But now you've confused me a lil more, the thread (also in ur sig) says it does have CWM
Rooting
Download this File first and put in your SDCARD
- CWM via stock recovery or download zip from http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
- SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot to recovery.
Choose apply update from external storage.
Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear.
Choose install zip from sdcard or external SD
Choose and Install SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot
You are done and now your device is Rooted

Cool, I made a back up in what i think is CWM and it put a 1.4GB folder on my sd-card.
Am i right in thinking i could mess up my phone, reset it or delete progs & mess with setting ...THEN as long as i can boot to recovery & CMW & load the back up it would return it back to how it is now ?
Peace
That is temporary cwm-not permanent. If you rebooted after flashing the 2 files......it launches stock recovery.
Anyway when your rooted/got permanent cwm you should be backing up your efs and doing a nand backup.
Then start pissing about with roms.

I see now... so i DO need to get permanent CWM ? I'd need to flash an insecure kernel for that right (i have one ready)
Dont yet know what efs is (ill read up on it) and nand back up ? i just been doing a lil reading on that and thought the back up i'd done is the same thing, they were calling it Nandroid back up, is that different ?
Peace
Just flash Siyah kernel in ODIN and then you will have root and CWM. Its that simple. No need for anything else at all.
I dont understand why we always have all this crap and unnecessary files/steps etc.
Connect phone to PC.
Reboot phone into download mode.
Load up ODIN.
Flash Siyah kernel.
Thats its, Once done you will have new kernel, cwm recovery, rooted system, SU, and also CWM app installed.
If you want new rom simply reboot into stock, wipe data and flash rom you want, You dont have to worry about cwm again as all custom kernels come with recovery.
Yeah I missed your other post saying you had done the nand backup as I was in the middle of writing my reply when you posted yours.

Having in mind that you have only stock recovery:
1. For Siyah:
- Download kernel from HERE
- flash as PDA via ODIN (with default ODIN settings)
2. You can flash PhilZ-CWM6 kernel which is based on a stock kernel with root and custom recovery:
- Download kernel from HERE
- Go to stock recovery: power off the phone then press "volume up + home + power" buttons at the same time for about 1sec
- flash ZIP kernel file from there.

Hi,
I read in some post that, flashing wrong kernel may brick the phone. So I'm confused on this "wrong" kernel ? What does this "wrong" kernel actually means ? Is it different from GT-I9100 variants or dependent on the model ?
Ex. I've my GT-I9100 model with XWLPW build number. So this Siyah & Dorimanx kernels work on my phone ?
I searched for Philz-CWM6 kernel, but I found there are so many links with different build numbers, I'm able to find one, but got confused over the other links ?
If Philz is able to provide these many links, then why Siyah & Dorimanx provide only one link ? Is these kernels independent of build numbers ?
I'm just curious on flashing my phone for the first time, thats why asking these many questions.

Hello Sir.
I think if you gone use CWM you have to be aware of your Kernel number that why there are differente CWM according the reference of kernel if you gone use Siyah i think it depends if its ICS or Gingerbreed i think these are reasons But lets wait what the experts says.

well u can flash a Kernel meant for I9100 only on I9100 phones not on I9100G for example , since I9100 and I9100g has different hardware architecture, and the kernel's are Hardware specific for u
Siyah and Dorimanx kernels are designed for I9100 ( international) and its variants M/P/T which all have the same basic Hardware ie Exynos Chip set (CPU) and Mali 400(GPU).
while the same Siyah and Dorimanx will not wrk on I9100G which has a Different hardware ie. Omap processor (CPU) with Power vx (GPU).

Today I flashed PhilZ Kernel & later tried Dorimanx Kernel too.
I like the Dorimanx kernel, it has several options.
BTW, how can I check / ensure that I'm free from Brickbug now ??

[Q] Confused 1st time rooter

Hi all,
well, I've read the site rules and watched carefully the video... I fully admit that I'm a noob and I'm ready to live with this status for a while
Despite this, I'll anyway post my questions, and I'm really grateful in advance for any help.
I want to root my SGS2 because I would like to install some specific apps and why not to change the rom to have something more "serious".
My actual config is as follow:
GT-I9100
Android version: 4.0.4
Base band: I9100BULP8
Kernel version: 3.0.15-1056084 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT Thu Sep 13
Built: IMM76D.BULPG
I'm really not familiar with all terms used in the android space, I read several threads looking for a rooting manual and found quite good stuff. My actual worry is that I'm unable to find something (cf_root etc...) to use matching with my actual installed levels, can someone point me out on a sure rooted stuff and how to.
I don't want to have my phone out of order, this is the reason for this post. As stated I got confused and got lost with the wording used, ex: don't use this rom because if you have the eMMC chip with VYL00M (my case) etc... That's why thanks in advance !
Mo
you can flash siyah from this thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1555259
its safe, got no eMMc erase bug...
Flashing siyah will gain you root after which you can flash any Rom of your choice..
Dont forget to make a nandroid backup..
cheers

Lol the poor guy ain't good with technical words, you see your current version of kernel probably has a serious issue called a brick bug, it renders the phone unusable and recovery is a hassle in case of soft brick, hard brick situation is unrecoverable. Install got brick bug app by chainfire and check whether you are vulnerable so you can be more cautious, installing cm roms and certain other roms are safe, before flashing you must check whether it is effected by eMMc brick bug, and do not perform any erase activity if you are effected by the bug.
Peace
Edit : If you are effected install via Odin only. And this bug is present only in ICS Roms currently, if you are in gb you are safe, and be careful about flashing stock ICS use safe custom roms which has eMMc Cap erase disabled.
Using GT - I9100

Hi,
thank you both for your answers, Siyah looks a good alternative. Is there a specific version to use ?
Is installing a CF-root a more straight forward process ? Assuming to find the right one...
Thanks again

Siyah is the best alternative for u ma8, as its brick bug free for sure and beeing the best kernel to root with gr8 success
u dwnld the tar file of siyah version 4.1.5 for S2 and flash the same by putting the file in 'PDA' section of 'ODIN' to root ur phone
u can google for lot of Youtube Video guides avilable for ODIN flash on ur s2
You can flash This from stock recovery (place the file in SD Card) and flash via stock recovery , then flash any custom Rom if you want to try JB , try NeatROM Lite v4.0 , after flashing this , you can just flash latest PhilZ Kernel v3.75 (Link in my signature )
Thanks for your help,
a last question (I hope) why the 4.1.5 version instead of the 5.0.1 ?
Stability issues ?
Have a good day

first root ur phone using v4.1.5 and then upgrade it to v5.0.1
i dislike the siyah v5.0.1..best to use siyah 4.1.5
so basically steps:
1. Install clockwork mode recovery(CWM) through recovery mode
2. Install siyah 4.1.5 by installing zip from sd card
3. now install any rom of your choice and enjoy
OK I am a NOOB too but need some clarification I just replaced my i9100 do to a brick bug so I gotta get this right. I just checked the replaced motherboard and sure enough it also has the bug SO, I need to know as it does seem quite clear already but only say 90% so to make it ABSOLUTELY CLEAR in order to avoid the bug I simply have to use siyah 4.1.5 and then I am free to flash whatever, GB + ICS + JB / 4.0.4 , 4.1.1 whatever the bug ONLY applys to my understanding (correct me here) with stock recovery and original ICS kernel.
NEXT NOOB question often ROM's pack in a kernel what things could bring back a dangerous situation. Flashing ROM's ? (maybe include a dangerous kernel or something ?).... 2: apps? can I ever factory data wipe safely again or with siyah after the previous protocol is it safe ? ?
:silly::silly:Also really Confused !?!?!?!:silly::silly:

Hey all,
just to let you know the status. I installed Siyah 4.1.5 using Odin as advised by Sun90 and everything went perfectly smooth.
Thank you !
I think my mext move will be first to install a good backup tool then to scout for other rom like cyanogen etc...
@futiless,
as I said using Odin, it's safe ! I read that dual boot is now available with the latest version of Siyah, that could be the answer for trying new roms while preserving a working one. For sure I'll test it.
Thanks again for your help

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 Firmware/Software Update

Hello,
I recently got a gift from a friend in the form of a Samsung Galaxy S2.
Last time I've owned a samsung phone was before the smartphone era, however I am familiar with other smartphones running android.
This phone, has the following info:
Android Version: 2.3.5.
Baseband Version: I9100XXKI4
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI8-CL616395 [email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XWKI8
Kies Info --> PDA:KI8 / PHONE:KI4 / CSC:KI2 (ODK)
If I try to update with Kies it says that my device's current firmware is not supported to update via Kies.
From what I've researched, the region code at the end (ODK) means that the phone was originally purchased in Sweden. Will that be a problem?
As far as I know the phone was not locked when I got it since I'm using a different carrier in a different country.
I tried to look up codes for Galaxy S2 that can tell me if the phone has a locked bootloader, if it can be unlocked, etc, but without any success.
So my questions are the following:
1. How can I update the phone to the most recent samsung firmware?
2. I know that official firmware comes with a lot of bloatware and I wish to get rid of it, and for that I need root, how do you do it on a samsung?
(i have no idea where to begin since my last phone's software/steps followed seem to be completely different)
3. Is there a way to change the firmware/region code or whatever to the country I'm currently residing in?
and last but not least, any suggestions on what I should do?
Cheers and thanks.

1. Afaik Kies will only update if you are using the stock firmware from the country you are connecting from. Custom firmwares will not work. The easiest way to flash the latest stock firmware is via Odin.
2. Install a kernel that roots your phone like Siyah or Dorimanx.
3. Search for threads in XDA about how to change your CRC.
Hello Megaritis,
Thank you for your reply.
Regarding the CRC, I need to change it to the country i'm residing in only if I plan on updating my phone via Kies, right?
I'm not planning on flashin JB just yet because i think it still needs some polishing. I want to flash an official ICS ROM on Siyah's Kernel.
My current to do is:
1. Get Odin, and flash the new kernel.
2. Get an official ICS ROM and flash it.
3. Get Titanium Backup and remove the bloatware if any.
4. Use the phone.
Anything else I should do / know?
Soo...here is where I am so far:
1. Downloaded SiyahKernel v5.0.1.
2. Downloaded PDA and CSC firmware for the country I reside in (from SamMobile.com).
Whats next? Stick them all into Odin and hope for the best?
PDA -> PDA
CSC -> CSC
PHONE -> SiyahKernel
???

Instead of doing all this together I suggest you just flash neat rom Lite (ics version, the latest v4 is JB) its the stock firmware with every bloatware removed and it is pre-rooted. Even v4 is pretty much stable and cool too as it is based on the leaked stock JB.
And several flashable addon are also available for it.
And If you are going to proceed with what you downloaded, flash Siyah after flashing the stock firmware.
Also before you proceed I suggest you check for brick bug, which can potentially superbrick your phone, Stock ICS 4.0.4 Kernel contains the problematic command, if you are effected, never perform any wipe or erase or reset with the stock kernel, just flash Siyah before doing all that.

I thank those who give helpful comments
I expect the same from others.
Could you post a small walkthrough on how I do that?
EDIT: My current android version is 2.3.5. and I plan to flash 4.0.3. stock and then remove bloatware.
This is the link to the post with detailed instructions

Remember "neat rom Lite" is suggested not just "neat rom" , and read the forum and instructions carefully.
NeatROM v3 is ICS I guess. And it contains v3 Siyah just flash the newest (which you downloaded) one if you feel like it(it's pretty much better)

There is an app called eMMc check in play store, but you don't need to worry if you're flashing a custom rom only the stock 4.0.4 has it.

Right.
I flashed CF-Root in order to root the current os.
Now, I wanna flash to 4.0.3. first. I downloaded an archive with a tar from sammobile.com from a carrier in my country.
How do I aproach this?
I put the .tar i downloaded in PDA in ODIN, and flash that first, and then put the Siyah tar in the PHONE field in ODIN and flash that second?
So long story short if you want to perform a factory reset, wipe do it from a kernel that is deemed safe like Siyah latest (v5.0.1 I guess).

I get what you're saying, both files go into PDA and they get flashed separatly, Siyah being the second in line.
But I have the following problem, or do i?
My current kernel is XWKI8 and as far as I know you can't flash different CSC/FIRMWARE if its not compatible with the kernel.

Yes, so flash Siyah first, then the rest.
When I was referring to flashing Siyah I meant updating it, but if you have an incompatible kernel you must flash siyah first.
But if you are flashing a stock firmware (not tampered with) the kernel doesn't matter as the PDA file contains it and will overwrite the existing one with a compatible one.

Agreed, I raised the problem only because sammobile.com's info on the file i downloaded doesn't list a kernel and I assumed that it only contains the PDA and CSC.
So if you are flashing with tar files you most probably don't need to worry about kernel, for example in neat rom Lite v3 it includes Siyah v3, but in case of flashing zip files you need a compatible kernel before hand.

In some cases PDA file won't contain kernel in such a package the kernel will be given separately, like the CSC file.

Bro just make sure what kind of file do you have? A zip or a tar? Flashing a zip(it's done via CWM) - - >compatible kernel required
Flashing a tar(via Odin) - - >if kernel included nothing to worry just flash.

Hmm, I think the .tar file does contain everything needed, even though i flashed siyah first....
I guess i'll have to re-flash it after its done.
By the way, any idea how I remove those flash counts?

Usb jig is your hardware and easiest option you can get it from eBay, or since you are using ICS, triangle away by chainfire will do the trick you can get it for free from his forum or you can buy him a beer and buy it from the play store.

Okay so its done. For some reason the android version is indeed 4.0.4 but the phone is okay, i downloaded that app and it states that the chip is ok and again, for some other reason, its still rooted, i don't know if the tar i had contained a kernel or not, but its all good now. I HOPE.
EDIT: Wops....spoke too soon, i saw the superuser app on my home screen and I assumed its rooted, but its not. Gotta re-flash siyah's kernel now.

Well, I flashed the kernel but now titanium backup is stuck at Searching Application Data, but it did prompt me for root priviledges... :|
EDIT: Meh...it was probably stuck because it was trying to access the SD card but my cable was still plugged in....fixed.
Now, i have one last question for the night: now i have 2 "root" apps in my homescreen, one is superuser and the other is supersu, judging by the fact that the "superuser" one was there when I first booted, I suspect that its useless and the supersu is the one with the root. How do I remove it?

[Q] I want to root and flash cwm on my i9100.

would anyone be kind enough to point me to the appropriate threads for an all-in-one guide to root and flash cwm on my i9100 so i can flash cm10.
