First, I apologize for starting a new thread on this subject.:fingers-crossed:
I just bought my Galaxy S II and I wanna root it,but I'm a little unsure about the whole process.
I also got a VYL00M emmc chip, which is vulnerable,but I'm on 4.0.3 i9100BVLPB.
Here are my thoughts and my questions :
If I flash via ODIN the coresponding CF-root kernel.
But then do I need to flash Syiah kernel through the CWM that comes with CF kernel so I can safely wipe and avoid brickbug?
I hope someone can provide a little aditional information and guide me through the process:angel:
Cheers

ICS 4.0.3 firmware is not affected by the brick bug.
However, you still need to post your ROM and kernel details. Goto Settings - About phone, and post everything you see

Like i said earlier, you are safe from the brick bug because you are running 4.0.3 firmware.
The brick bug only affects 4.0.4 firmware.
2.
To ROOT your device only, you don't need to flash any kernel.

Hi
I have the same phone details as the OP. a UK T-mobile running ICS 4.0.3 i9100 BVLPD
I rooted my phone the other day by the simple method in link above... BUT isn't this method of rooting limited ?
I would like to root my phone fully using an insecure kernel & Odin but i dont know where to get the correct kernel for my phone, i need an insecure & original secure kernel to do this right ?
Sorry for my nuwbness questions.
Peace
What are you talking about "limited" and "fully".Its either rooted or it aint.
That method doesnt give you CWM,if thats what you mean. You can just flash a custom kernel that contains CWM if you want.
Isn't exynos abuse the faster way to get rooted?

Ok, my bad, i am a nubie after all . i thought i'd read somewhere that this method was limited in some way.
But now you've confused me a lil more, the thread (also in ur sig) says it does have CWM
Rooting
Download this File first and put in your SDCARD
- CWM via stock recovery or download zip from http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
- SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot to recovery.
Choose apply update from external storage.
Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear.
Choose install zip from sdcard or external SD
Choose and Install SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot
You are done and now your device is Rooted

Cool, I made a back up in what i think is CWM and it put a 1.4GB folder on my sd-card.
Am i right in thinking i could mess up my phone, reset it or delete progs & mess with setting ...THEN as long as i can boot to recovery & CMW & load the back up it would return it back to how it is now ?
Peace
That is temporary cwm-not permanent. If you rebooted after flashing the 2 files......it launches stock recovery.
Anyway when your rooted/got permanent cwm you should be backing up your efs and doing a nand backup.
Then start pissing about with roms.

I see now... so i DO need to get permanent CWM ? I'd need to flash an insecure kernel for that right (i have one ready)
Dont yet know what efs is (ill read up on it) and nand back up ? i just been doing a lil reading on that and thought the back up i'd done is the same thing, they were calling it Nandroid back up, is that different ?
Peace
Just flash Siyah kernel in ODIN and then you will have root and CWM. Its that simple. No need for anything else at all.
I dont understand why we always have all this crap and unnecessary files/steps etc.
Connect phone to PC.
Reboot phone into download mode.
Load up ODIN.
Flash Siyah kernel.
Thats its, Once done you will have new kernel, cwm recovery, rooted system, SU, and also CWM app installed.
If you want new rom simply reboot into stock, wipe data and flash rom you want, You dont have to worry about cwm again as all custom kernels come with recovery.
Yeah I missed your other post saying you had done the nand backup as I was in the middle of writing my reply when you posted yours.

Hi.
I have on my Galaxy S2 the stock ICS 4.0.3 (XWLP7) with CF-root kernel 5.4. I would like now to upload the phone with ICS 4.0.4 (XWLPU). Can I do it now like always with Odin or should I do first something else with my phone (wipe etc.)?
Thanks in advice
You can do it either way, I prefer doing it via CWM recovery.
To avoid BrickBug flash latest Siyah Kernel first (v4.1.2) before you do any wipe operations.
Then do a full wipe and flash desired rom.

dwnld the 4.0.4 firmware and flash the same using ODIN since ur upgrading from a stock rom to another one it will not be an issue, but after flashing 4.0.4 u have to re-root your phone, since stock XWLPU 4.0.4 will automatically unroot ur phone

You can just upgrade using Odin, no problem.
Note:
-once you upgrade to 4.0.4, then say goodbye to CF-ROOT kernel.
-Just flash a custom kernel like Siyah, speedmod, Dorimanx, Dream at once.
Why?
-Because stock ICS 4.0.4 kernel has a brick bug enabled on it.
-This bug is also present on all kernels based on stock 4.0.4 kernel. CF-ROOT and all insecure kernels fall into this category
What will happen?
-If after rooting your phone after upgrading to 4.0.4, and you wipe your phone or try ROM backup while running stock/stock based kernels then say goodbye to your phone.

Hi. Thanks for your answear. But I would like to know how should I do it, step by step. I have download it the Sizah kernel 4.12.
1. enter the CWM recovery mode and install the Siyah kernel (install ZIP from external card)
2. reboot the phone or?
3. enter CWM recovery mode again: hold down the volume up button, home button and power button.
4. in CWM recovery I have to choose the wipe data/factory reset
5. after wipe phone reboot
6. enter the Download mode and install the new ROM with Odin
Why should I install the siyah kernel? I still have the cf-root kernel (my phone is rooted).
After upload the new ICS 4.0.4 if I wanna root my phone, I should make the root with Siyah kernel via Odin or? Do you think the Siah kernel is better from CF-root kernel?
Thanks
I thought the brick bug has been taken care of in the latest CF kernels

that was not because of cf-root kernel's ma8 since they r tweaked stock kernel's with EMMC_cap (Brick Bug) removed , hence there would be no problem, as i have used one two days back to root a friends phone which was on stock 4.0.4 LPT firmware without any issues
the brick might be caused by the wrong CF-root being choosen like the one's marked with * that people might have dwnld'd without properly reading why it has been * rd.

Hi guys. I have been a frequent visitor and learned alot about android and features. I am ready to root my galaxy s2 i9100
My details are :
Android version: 4.04
Model number gt-i9100
Baseband version: i9100XXLQ6
Kernal version: I9100xxlbq-cl911584
build number: IMM76D.XXLQB

That's all you need mate. This kernel is declared safe by Chainfire but as any 4.0.4 kernel should not be used to wipe data because of possibility of emmc cap bug rendering your phone bricked. Root with this kernel but make sure to switch to custom safe one before attempting to wipe data.
Best of luck

Essentially flashing using a 4.04 firmware will brick the phone? or is it when I flash, it will be bad to flash using a 4.04 firmware? Sooo confused.
If anyone has the steps what I should do, please tell me. I am worried about bricking.
If I root the phone, when official JB comes out, will I be able to update?
any help guys? The thread isn't very clear what do I do if I have this kernal. Do I downgrade before rooting?
Insted of flashing that Cf root kernel with Odin or Cwm, flash Siyah 4.1.5.

I actually have the same HW version in my new SGS2 and I have checked with eMMC check (downloaded from Google Play) that my chip is safe from "brick bug"
Now the question is: which kernel to choose, CF or Siyah ? I'm planning to use CyanogenMod 10 on this phone, does kernel version matter at all in this case ?
/edit:
ROM will be either original CM10 or one of the variants (like HellyBean for example)

If GotBrickbug app by CF said your chip is safe than it shouldn't matter what kernel you use. Safe hardware.
Personally I always prefer rooting with CF kernels that match my FW version. Then if you're still unsure about the chip... flash siyah, go to advanced (while still in recovery) > reboot recovery. Then wipe data with siyah kernel just to be on the safe side. I always keep siyah 3.5.2 (the first transisiontl ics/jb kernel) for those purposes. CM10 built in kernels are all considered safe so that's the last time you'll ever be worried about it.
Best of luck, man
Thank you very much, I ran emmc check and I have a sane chip.

Samsung releases firmware in various regions and with varied carriers. So I bet that till it is officially released it will take time but when it does you will get OTA if your are on 'STOCK' ROM. but if you move away to custom rom then you will have to update manually.

To revert back assuming you didn't do backup before, download 4.0.4 firmware for your region on sammobile and flash it using odin.. Then to upgrade it when official update are up just hit OTA, kies, or flash it via odin the same way like you flash 4.0.4..
If you don't have idea how to flash then google it, theres plenty much tutorials out there.. hope it helps

Actually I get confused myself hehe, by "Flash using CF, or CM 10" you mean flash what? The rest are ok..
Well, let's put this simple, Flash the CF-Root for your phone then you're rooted now, if you want to flash custom rom such as cm10 then flash it (the cm10 zip file to be flashed on recovery mode and don't forget to read the cm10 instruction before & after flashing), if you want to get rid of the triangle then do it with triangle away, finally to unroot and revert to stock, just flash stock firmware via odin..

Even though ur phone has got a insane chip, its safe for now since u have installed siyah kernel which is 'Brick Bug' free ma8
as for as leaked JB v4.1.2, its better to stay away from it, since its a test version not a official release by samsung
u can visit a cpl of rom threads in both the 'Original android development' section as well as the ' Android development' section, go thro the change logs in the main page of the rom threads, see the one that suits u best
then u can flash the same as per the install instructions on those threads and see

How do I install the roms then? Connect computer and phone -> download mode -> ODIN -> put the rom in there and start it?
or
Can I put the file into sd card and open CRW and then run the zip from e.g sd card?
Do i need to wipe anything before doing either of them? Will it brick my phone??
Thanks mates!

Hey,
I have samsung galaxy s2 which i just rooted yesterday. I dont understand anything yet aboat flashing a new firmware like 4.1.2 to my 4.0.4 ICS.
First I rooted my phone with Odin and file called CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPQ-v5.3-CWM5.tar. All went fine and I had the root acces. After that I put a Siyah Kernel v.4.0.1 to my phone from CWR startup (install zip from sd card). Now I want to know how to install Roms(?) to my phone and how to install 4.1.2 android in to it?
Heres my phone infos
Model GT-l9100
Android version 4.0.4
Bandwidth version l9100XXLQ6
Core version 3.0.15-1114882

So, i download that .tar or .zip and put it on sdcard, after that i start the that CWMR (volume up, home and power) and press "zip from sdcard" and select the rom?
No need to backup anything no need to wipe data or cashe or do factory reset?
Are you 100% it wont brick, can anyone confirm?
Thanks bro!

Wanamlite rom have Philz kernel which is brickbug free.

u can find lot of 'How to flash stock 4.0.4 firmware on Galaxy S2' videos on Youtube

Hello,
I recently got a gift from a friend in the form of a Samsung Galaxy S2.
Last time I've owned a samsung phone was before the smartphone era, however I am familiar with other smartphones running android.
This phone, has the following info:
Android Version: 2.3.5.
Baseband Version: I9100XXKI4
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI8-CL616395 [email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XWKI8
Kies Info --> PDA:KI8 / PHONE:KI4 / CSC:KI2 (ODK)
If I try to update with Kies it says that my device's current firmware is not supported to update via Kies.
From what I've researched, the region code at the end (ODK) means that the phone was originally purchased in Sweden. Will that be a problem?
As far as I know the phone was not locked when I got it since I'm using a different carrier in a different country.
I tried to look up codes for Galaxy S2 that can tell me if the phone has a locked bootloader, if it can be unlocked, etc, but without any success.
So my questions are the following:
1. How can I update the phone to the most recent samsung firmware?
2. I know that official firmware comes with a lot of bloatware and I wish to get rid of it, and for that I need root, how do you do it on a samsung?
(i have no idea where to begin since my last phone's software/steps followed seem to be completely different)
3. Is there a way to change the firmware/region code or whatever to the country I'm currently residing in?
and last but not least, any suggestions on what I should do?
Cheers and thanks.

1. Afaik Kies will only update if you are using the stock firmware from the country you are connecting from. Custom firmwares will not work. The easiest way to flash the latest stock firmware is via Odin.
2. Install a kernel that roots your phone like Siyah or Dorimanx.
3. Search for threads in XDA about how to change your CRC.
Hello Megaritis,
Thank you for your reply.
Regarding the CRC, I need to change it to the country i'm residing in only if I plan on updating my phone via Kies, right?
I'm not planning on flashin JB just yet because i think it still needs some polishing. I want to flash an official ICS ROM on Siyah's Kernel.
My current to do is:
1. Get Odin, and flash the new kernel.
2. Get an official ICS ROM and flash it.
3. Get Titanium Backup and remove the bloatware if any.
4. Use the phone.
Anything else I should do / know?
Soo...here is where I am so far:
1. Downloaded SiyahKernel v5.0.1.
2. Downloaded PDA and CSC firmware for the country I reside in (from SamMobile.com).
Whats next? Stick them all into Odin and hope for the best?
PDA -> PDA
CSC -> CSC
PHONE -> SiyahKernel
???

Instead of doing all this together I suggest you just flash neat rom Lite (ics version, the latest v4 is JB) its the stock firmware with every bloatware removed and it is pre-rooted. Even v4 is pretty much stable and cool too as it is based on the leaked stock JB.
And several flashable addon are also available for it.
And If you are going to proceed with what you downloaded, flash Siyah after flashing the stock firmware.
Also before you proceed I suggest you check for brick bug, which can potentially superbrick your phone, Stock ICS 4.0.4 Kernel contains the problematic command, if you are effected, never perform any wipe or erase or reset with the stock kernel, just flash Siyah before doing all that.

I expect the same from others.
Could you post a small walkthrough on how I do that?
EDIT: My current android version is 2.3.5. and I plan to flash 4.0.3. stock and then remove bloatware.

Remember "neat rom Lite" is suggested not just "neat rom" , and read the forum and instructions carefully.
NeatROM v3 is ICS I guess. And it contains v3 Siyah just flash the newest (which you downloaded) one if you feel like it(it's pretty much better)

There is an app called eMMc check in play store, but you don't need to worry if you're flashing a custom rom only the stock 4.0.4 has it.

Right.
I flashed CF-Root in order to root the current os.
Now, I wanna flash to 4.0.3. first. I downloaded an archive with a tar from sammobile.com from a carrier in my country.
How do I aproach this?
I put the .tar i downloaded in PDA in ODIN, and flash that first, and then put the Siyah tar in the PHONE field in ODIN and flash that second?
So long story short if you want to perform a factory reset, wipe do it from a kernel that is deemed safe like Siyah latest (v5.0.1 I guess).

I get what you're saying, both files go into PDA and they get flashed separatly, Siyah being the second in line.
But I have the following problem, or do i?
My current kernel is XWKI8 and as far as I know you can't flash different CSC/FIRMWARE if its not compatible with the kernel.

Yes, so flash Siyah first, then the rest.
When I was referring to flashing Siyah I meant updating it, but if you have an incompatible kernel you must flash siyah first.
But if you are flashing a stock firmware (not tampered with) the kernel doesn't matter as the PDA file contains it and will overwrite the existing one with a compatible one.

Agreed, I raised the problem only because sammobile.com's info on the file i downloaded doesn't list a kernel and I assumed that it only contains the PDA and CSC.
So if you are flashing with tar files you most probably don't need to worry about kernel, for example in neat rom Lite v3 it includes Siyah v3, but in case of flashing zip files you need a compatible kernel before hand.

In some cases PDA file won't contain kernel in such a package the kernel will be given separately, like the CSC file.

Bro just make sure what kind of file do you have? A zip or a tar? Flashing a zip(it's done via CWM) - - >compatible kernel required
Flashing a tar(via Odin) - - >if kernel included nothing to worry just flash.

Hmm, I think the .tar file does contain everything needed, even though i flashed siyah first....
I guess i'll have to re-flash it after its done.
By the way, any idea how I remove those flash counts?

Usb jig is your hardware and easiest option you can get it from eBay, or since you are using ICS, triangle away by chainfire will do the trick you can get it for free from his forum or you can buy him a beer and buy it from the play store.

Okay so its done. For some reason the android version is indeed 4.0.4 but the phone is okay, i downloaded that app and it states that the chip is ok and again, for some other reason, its still rooted, i don't know if the tar i had contained a kernel or not, but its all good now. I HOPE.
EDIT: Wops....spoke too soon, i saw the superuser app on my home screen and I assumed its rooted, but its not. Gotta re-flash siyah's kernel now.

Well, I flashed the kernel but now titanium backup is stuck at Searching Application Data, but it did prompt me for root priviledges... :|
EDIT: Meh...it was probably stuck because it was trying to access the SD card but my cable was still plugged in....fixed.
Now, i have one last question for the night: now i have 2 "root" apps in my homescreen, one is superuser and the other is supersu, judging by the fact that the "superuser" one was there when I first booted, I suspect that its useless and the supersu is the one with the root. How do I remove it?
Hi I have a question.
My friend has this Galaxy S2(I9100) with stock 4.0.4 ROM and after seeing my phone with Jelly Bean official from Samsung he wants to update hired phone too.
But since the 4.0.4 has that brick bug or so he is afraid to flash it through Odin.
Also can he flash the new 4.1.2 firmware without wiping. Will all his apps be there and is it recommended top do it that way.
Thanks all.

Check got brickbug app from playstore first.
If it is sane, flash it thru odin / mobile odin.
If it isn't, flash siyah and then flash 4.1.2.
I am in the same position but I have the insane chip. When I read the Siyah post the first thing it says is that it can only be used on JB not ics so is it safe to flash it on ics 4.0.4 before flashing 4.1.2 via odin as it says above?
Thanks

Dude, it doesnt make a single difference if he has the sane chip or not and flashing Siyah before flashing his rom via ODIN is completely and utterley pointless since its replaced when flashing via odin. The brickbug is part of stock recovery and since he wont be entering 4.0.4 recovery at any point and flashing via ODIN he has no need to worry about it.

Ignore what was said earlier.
If you want to flash without wiping and keep apps/appdata then simply....
Reboot into download mode
Flash stock rom (.md5 or .tar)
Reboot into download again and flash Siyah v6 beta4 or above
You have no need to worry about brickbug. Only time it would affect you is if you was booting into stock 4.0.4 recovery and you have no need to do that at all.

Didn't you noticed that lots of people just love wipping data?
You gotta lay it out for them, so they can play it safe. I know you don't enjoy people bricking their devices.
You really need to remember when you first started flashing phones...and be more emphatic.
Bricking fear..is motivation here.
