4.1.2 flash to my s2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I have samsung galaxy s2 which i just rooted yesterday. I dont understand anything yet aboat flashing a new firmware like 4.1.2 to my 4.0.4 ICS.
First I rooted my phone with Odin and file called CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPQ-v5.3-CWM5.tar. All went fine and I had the root acces. After that I put a Siyah Kernel v.4.0.1 to my phone from CWR startup (install zip from sd card). Now I want to know how to install Roms(?) to my phone and how to install 4.1.2 android in to it?
Heres my phone infos
Model GT-l9100
Android version 4.0.4
Bandwidth version l9100XXLQ6
Core version 3.0.15-1114882
[email protected]#3
So how I can install it without bricking my phone? My phone has the insane chip.

Even though ur phone has got a insane chip, its safe for now since u have installed siyah kernel which is 'Brick Bug' free ma8
as for as leaked JB v4.1.2, its better to stay away from it, since its a test version not a official release by samsung
u can visit a cpl of rom threads in both the 'Original android development' section as well as the ' Android development' section, go thro the change logs in the main page of the rom threads, see the one that suits u best
then u can flash the same as per the install instructions on those threads and see

So i cant brick my phone anyway anymor or hows?
Can you name me some reason not to install 4.1.2? I would be so intrested in installing it!
How do I install the roms then? Connect computer and phone -> download mode -> ODIN -> put the rom in there and start it?
or
Can I put the file into sd card and open CRW and then run the zip from e.g sd card?
Do i need to wipe anything before doing either of them? Will it brick my phone??
Thanks mates!

No need to backup anything no need to wipe data or cashe or do factory reset?
Are you 100% it wont brick, can anyone confirm?
Thanks bro!

u can find lot of 'How to flash stock 4.0.4 firmware on Galaxy S2' videos on Youtube

Once you test jellybeen you would not want to go back.

I have recently bought a SGS2, and it had ics 4.0.3 intalled, and i have spotted some real bugs and lags, and i dont like this. So id like to ask you how to install original SGS2 Gingerbread 2.3.6, cuz im lil bit new in android.
Waiting for your answers.
P.S. sorry for my bad english its aint my native language
There is no problem with downgrading. Everything you should to know you can find in sticked threads.
In short
1. Download Rom you like for Your region
2. Get necessary tools (Odin)
3. Read tutorials about flashing
4. Be sure you understand everything

Visit sammobile and download the firmware: www.sammobile.com
Swyped from my Galaxy SII
Hay gingerbread & ics 4.0.3 r buggy & laggy & not so much battery life friendly. For this reason i don't like these two Os. But ics 4.0.4 is faster, smoother, stable & battery life friendly. So i use ics 4.0.4 European region. Cuz european rom is better then other region. if u wanna update ur firmware from gingerbread or ics 4.0.3 to ICS 4.0.4, at first u need 2 wipe ur phone factory data, catch partition & delvic catch. Don't wipe factory data/catch partition from stock recovery in ics 4.0.4. cuz its have brickbug. check if ur phone have brickbug or not by this apps "eMMC brickbug check" from Google play store. After wipe then update ur phone firmware by select PDA in odin. download latest(30/7/12) unbranded European ics 4.0.4 XWLPU stock firmware in this link:
http://db.tt/3nw1oSmr
plz make a nanroid backup & also backup ur all necessary document/phone numbers/mms/sms etc. after flash when phone restart & automatic install some apps. After that flash again brickbug free LPU safe kernel by select pda in odin. download brickbug free LPU kernel in this link:

Root Advice - Little help needed

First, I apologize for starting a new thread on this subject.:fingers-crossed:
I just bought my Galaxy S II and I wanna root it,but I'm a little unsure about the whole process.
I also got a VYL00M emmc chip, which is vulnerable,but I'm on 4.0.3 i9100BVLPB.
Here are my thoughts and my questions :
If I flash via ODIN the coresponding CF-root kernel.
But then do I need to flash Syiah kernel through the CWM that comes with CF kernel so I can safely wipe and avoid brickbug?
I hope someone can provide a little aditional information and guide me through the process:angel:
Cheers

ICS 4.0.3 firmware is not affected by the brick bug.
However, you still need to post your ROM and kernel details. Goto Settings - About phone, and post everything you see

Like i said earlier, you are safe from the brick bug because you are running 4.0.3 firmware.
The brick bug only affects 4.0.4 firmware.
2.
To ROOT your device only, you don't need to flash any kernel.

Hi
I have the same phone details as the OP. a UK T-mobile running ICS 4.0.3 i9100 BVLPD
I rooted my phone the other day by the simple method in link above... BUT isn't this method of rooting limited ?
I would like to root my phone fully using an insecure kernel & Odin but i dont know where to get the correct kernel for my phone, i need an insecure & original secure kernel to do this right ?
Sorry for my nuwbness questions.
Peace
What are you talking about "limited" and "fully".Its either rooted or it aint.
That method doesnt give you CWM,if thats what you mean. You can just flash a custom kernel that contains CWM if you want.
Isn't exynos abuse the faster way to get rooted?

But now you've confused me a lil more, the thread (also in ur sig) says it does have CWM
Rooting
Download this File first and put in your SDCARD
- CWM via stock recovery or download zip from http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
- SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot to recovery.
Choose apply update from external storage.
Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear.
Choose install zip from sdcard or external SD
Choose and Install SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot
You are done and now your device is Rooted

Cool, I made a back up in what i think is CWM and it put a 1.4GB folder on my sd-card.
Am i right in thinking i could mess up my phone, reset it or delete progs & mess with setting ...THEN as long as i can boot to recovery & CMW & load the back up it would return it back to how it is now ?
Peace
That is temporary cwm-not permanent. If you rebooted after flashing the 2 files......it launches stock recovery.
Anyway when your rooted/got permanent cwm you should be backing up your efs and doing a nand backup.
Then start pissing about with roms.

I see now... so i DO need to get permanent CWM ? I'd need to flash an insecure kernel for that right (i have one ready)
Dont yet know what efs is (ill read up on it) and nand back up ? i just been doing a lil reading on that and thought the back up i'd done is the same thing, they were calling it Nandroid back up, is that different ?
Peace
Just flash Siyah kernel in ODIN and then you will have root and CWM. Its that simple. No need for anything else at all.
I dont understand why we always have all this crap and unnecessary files/steps etc.
Connect phone to PC.
Reboot phone into download mode.
Load up ODIN.
Flash Siyah kernel.
Thats its, Once done you will have new kernel, cwm recovery, rooted system, SU, and also CWM app installed.
If you want new rom simply reboot into stock, wipe data and flash rom you want, You dont have to worry about cwm again as all custom kernels come with recovery.
Yeah I missed your other post saying you had done the nand backup as I was in the middle of writing my reply when you posted yours.

[Q] Assistance needed with first root of SG2 i9100

Hi guys. I have been a frequent visitor and learned alot about android and features. I am ready to root my galaxy s2 i9100
My details are :
Android version: 4.04
Model number gt-i9100
Baseband version: i9100XXLQ6
Kernal version: I9100xxlbq-cl911584
build number: IMM76D.XXLQB

I am not seeing the original kernal file up for download for my version. What else do I need for my root? Is there any advice such as best method and such. Thank you kindly everyone. Mods, if I posted in the wrong section, please move my thread to the correct location.
That's all you need mate. This kernel is declared safe by Chainfire but as any 4.0.4 kernel should not be used to wipe data because of possibility of emmc cap bug rendering your phone bricked. Root with this kernel but make sure to switch to custom safe one before attempting to wipe data.
Best of luck

Essentially flashing using a 4.04 firmware will brick the phone? or is it when I flash, it will be bad to flash using a 4.04 firmware? Sooo confused.
If anyone has the steps what I should do, please tell me. I am worried about bricking.
If I root the phone, when official JB comes out, will I be able to update?
any help guys? The thread isn't very clear what do I do if I have this kernal. Do I downgrade before rooting?
Insted of flashing that Cf root kernel with Odin or Cwm, flash Siyah 4.1.5.

I actually have the same HW version in my new SGS2 and I have checked with eMMC check (downloaded from Google Play) that my chip is safe from "brick bug"
Now the question is: which kernel to choose, CF or Siyah ? I'm planning to use CyanogenMod 10 on this phone, does kernel version matter at all in this case ?
/edit:
ROM will be either original CM10 or one of the variants (like HellyBean for example)

If GotBrickbug app by CF said your chip is safe than it shouldn't matter what kernel you use. Safe hardware.
Personally I always prefer rooting with CF kernels that match my FW version. Then if you're still unsure about the chip... flash siyah, go to advanced (while still in recovery) > reboot recovery. Then wipe data with siyah kernel just to be on the safe side. I always keep siyah 3.5.2 (the first transisiontl ics/jb kernel) for those purposes. CM10 built in kernels are all considered safe so that's the last time you'll ever be worried about it.
Best of luck, man
Thank you very much, I ran emmc check and I have a sane chip.

Samsung releases firmware in various regions and with varied carriers. So I bet that till it is officially released it will take time but when it does you will get OTA if your are on 'STOCK' ROM. but if you move away to custom rom then you will have to update manually.

To revert back assuming you didn't do backup before, download 4.0.4 firmware for your region on sammobile and flash it using odin.. Then to upgrade it when official update are up just hit OTA, kies, or flash it via odin the same way like you flash 4.0.4..
If you don't have idea how to flash then google it, theres plenty much tutorials out there.. hope it helps
Ohhhhhh. I get it. Flash using CF, or CM 10, use triangle app to remove warning triangle and if I need to unroot, flash with 4.04 (my region) using odin? Sound pretty simple. Am I missing any steps?

Actually I get confused myself hehe, by "Flash using CF, or CM 10" you mean flash what? The rest are ok..
Well, let's put this simple, Flash the CF-Root for your phone then you're rooted now, if you want to flash custom rom such as cm10 then flash it (the cm10 zip file to be flashed on recovery mode and don't forget to read the cm10 instruction before & after flashing), if you want to get rid of the triangle then do it with triangle away, finally to unroot and revert to stock, just flash stock firmware via odin..

[Q] brick bug

Hi .. i originally rooted my phone using " zirggles " ? it was something on you tube i found ! well it worked untill my s2 updated to 4.0.4 then i lost part of my root. i still have titanium back up ... but if i run root checker it says i don't have proper root. and some apps i cant download. i have checked and i do have an insane chip ! i want to root my phone properly again, but i know with this chip its risky. would it be ok to flash 4.0.3 firmware .. would this get rid of the brick bug ? if so is there somewhere i can download the firmware ? im curently on XXLQ6 or is there another way of rooting my phone properly again ? i have super user on the phone but it says outdated binary. please be understanding as i only joined yesterday and i am a total noob to this all

Hi .. i originally rooted my phone using " zirggles " ? it was something on you tube i found ! well it worked untill my s2 updated to 4.0.4 then i lost part of my root. i still have titanium back up ... but if i run root checker it says i don't have proper root. and some apps i cant download. i have checked and i do have an insane chip ! i want to root my phone properly again, but i know with this chip its risky. would it be ok to flash 4.0.3 firmware .. would this get rid of the brick bug ? if so is there somewhere i can download the firmware ? im curently on XXLQ6 or is there another way of rooting my phone properly again ? i have super user on the phone but it says outdated binary. please be understanding as i only joined yesterday and i am a total noob to this all

4.0.3 firmware is safe, the issue exists only in stock 4.0.4 ICS and if you are on 4.0.4 ICS don't perform any type of wipe, reset etc... Flash 4.0.3 firmware or lower version's like gingerbread or any custom rom with custom kernels, also custom kernels for 4.0.4 version's are safe theoretically but i still wont recommend it because I have seen people brick their phone from CWM, so the problem is with the kernel which has eMMc cap erase command, most custom kernels don't have it, but be warned an old Siyah kernel has it so use the newest one.
For the sake of safety i recommend that you flash 4.0.3 via Odin.

ok thanks for the advice .. if i was to use a Siyah kernel, which one would you suggest ? would i have to use odin to do this ? i have CWM on my phone, so could i do it from the phone rather than odin ? if i can, would i need to put the new kernel on the external SD card ?
thanks a million

dwnld the tar file of siyah v4.1.5 (for galaxy S2) and flash the same using 'Odin', since its the best way ma8
Latest Siyah 5.0.1 should not be a problem as well. Using it for a week now.

Use the latest Siyah its pretty amazing, i consider Odin as the safest method, even though if you can obtain Siyah as a zip file you can do it via CWM which is also a pretty safe and easy method for noobs, if you downloaded a tar flash via Odin or Mobile Odin.

i am really scared to take decision and choose one to follow

Even easier method.....
BACKUP current setup
1) download the firmware from Sam mobile or samsung updates.com
2) visit this thread.....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19375402
read all the instructions and download the MobileOdin app from the first post
3) in that same thread, go to post number 5 and download.....
MobileOdin_FlashKernel_I9100G-v1.0zip
4) install MobileOdin
5) extract and install the FlashKernel
6) open MobileOdin and import your downloaded firmware
7) begin the flash.......
Don't get much easier than that.....
Edit.....Here's the link to the l9100G firmwares at samsung-updates.com
http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I9100G
Edit 2.....I know that the paid version of MobileOdin will extract the firmware from the download zip....I'm not sure if the lite version will.....probably best to extract it first....before importing it to M.O.

I assume you can still get into download mode, but can you get into recovery mode (volume up..home..power)?
Sent from my Rooted, De bloated Stock JB powered S2 via PhilZ kernel and Tapatalk 2....
Flash a I9100G custom kernel via odin (.tar file) so you can get to CWM.
After that make sure you are flashing an I9100G ROM not a I9100 ROM.
@Keith he wants to flash 4.2.2, which is a custom ROM, MO does stock only.

Oh right....I read the OP and saw that he wanted to 'update to the latest version'. I took the 4.2.2 in his thread title to be a typo.....
Edit....and the second link I provided would have taken him to a 'stock firmwares' download page....

Now we are at ground 0
I did as mentioned all what i get is recovery mode
when i try to install the firmware stuff seem to go well until the phone turns off and i have to turn it on again

So odin passes...that's good.
You only need to flash a proper ROM.

Once you flash the firmware, you get a pass?
reboot into recovery/cwm and wipe dalvic, cache and factory reset...
Then reboot normally and you *should* be good to go....

Keith already posted a link where you can get I9100G ROMs.
Once you download the ROM abd extract the zip/rar file you might get a bunch of files, you have to flash:
PDA: Code
PHONE: Modem
CSC: CSC
Sent from the little guy
I already downloaded one of these
and got it on SD
when i try to install no error just the phone turns off after some loadings

What exactly do you want to do? What is your end goal for your phone?
Do you want to be unrooted with the latest firmware?
Or do you want to be rooted and running a custom rom?
Sent from my Rooted, De bloated Stock JB powered S2 via PhilZ kernel and Tapatalk 2....
t the moment i need any working phone
I prefer having the latest rooted phone
Please advise
