Hey all, I tried searching for this "usb cable", "can't charge", "unable to charge device", but did not seem to come across anything. Either that or I'm blind...
Well anyway, I left my charger/cable that came with the HTC One (T-mobile version) at the SO's place, so I thought I'd try a usb cable I have at work plugged into the laptop. My phone comes up with a notification saying "Unable to charge device. Please use the supported charger".
I came across this the first day as well, when I used the HTC adapter and my cable from work. Since then I've only found that the HTC adapter + usb cable that came in the box will work. I haven't tried bundled usb cable with the laptop. Is this for real? Does anybody know what kind of charger/usb cable I should be looking for in case I wanted to get a spare or have an extra set to use?
tl;dr
HTC One adapter + bundled USB cable = will charge fine
HTC One adapter + random usb cable from work = "Unable to charge device. Please use the supported charger."
Laptop + random usb cable from work = "Unable to charge device. Please use the supported charger."
Nobody else is experiencing this? I have 4 usb cables here at work and none of them work. Thought they would've been all standard USB cables. Perhaps not eh?
btw these cables I have from work have worked on the Nexus4 previously.

Thanks for the info...it was on page 174 on the PC too. It seems to be a different issue though, with an adapter that has less than 1A input. My problem seems to come from the USB cable I'm using, since the HTC adapter + my usb cable doesn't work, but HTC adapter + HTC usb cable does..
I borrowed a different usb cable from my coworker and it seems to work in the laptop for some reason. He mentioned that he's heard similar stories like this before which involved different wiring of the power/data lines in the cable or something....in any case I just found it really odd that it turned out like this. As far as I know there's no indication of different types of USB cables...so how the heck would I know which cable to get if I needed a spare!
Not all usb cables are creAted equal..
Perfect example would be a usb cable from an LG G2X
On samsung galaxy s2. Turn the phone off and plug into normal cable.. turn it on.. it charges
Turn the phone off.. plug it into G2X cable.. turn it on.. it puts the phone in download mode.

Just a FYI, the page numbers may be different; one can setup the number of posts in a page in the user control panel. I think mine is set to 50, so I think that might be on page 6 for me if I'm using my PC. It's generally better to link just that individual post to be sure people see it.

ahh that's good advice. Thanks.
For anyone interested, I think this is the first post I saw that was related to it (didn't look too far back to see the post s/he was replying to):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41239399&postcount=1732
There are a few posts afterwards, but in the end I think it was more of an adapter related issue rather than a usb cable issue.
Also, I managed to find another USB cable at home that I hadn't tried yet (it was a cable that came with a portable HDD), and lo and behold it worked when I plugged into my pc. So I guess it's just the usb cables I have at work that for some reason don't want to play nice with my phone. blah.

I have 4 different micro usb to usb cables and though they all charge the phone, only the cable that came with the phone will establish a data connection with my laptops/desktops and with kies (not air) on these computers.
i have searched and read but not found any information on this. if the cable is not proprietary to the phone, any idea why this would be happening?
btw, I have also tried usb to micro usb gender changers on many existing usb cables and the same problem exists...only the cable that came in the box will establish usable data transfer connections.
sorry if this has been asked and answered before, i cannot find it. if so, a referral link will be greatly appreciated.
thanks all

Really? I have 3 from my old HTC phones, and 2 from my Amazon Kindle and all 5 work just fine to charge (from wall or computer), and establish data connection (from computer).
I will say on my iMac I had issues because the type of internal powered USB Apple went with on the 2009-2011 iMacs, some models have data communications issues and the only way around it is to use a different computer with a non powered usb hub internally. Seems any other macs they offer besides this particular model work fine as I have no issues w\ my MacBook Air 2011 or my Mac Mini 2011
yep... really. and that is on three different laptops and two different desktops.... all running windows 7 ultimate or professional (and one windows 8 developer preview). also i have bypassed powered hubs to test... still only the significantly heavier samsung cable the only one to work. btw, thanks for your uber quick reply

I'm wondering if your phone might have a bent pin or jenky config setting in the software somehow, that's just so strange.
If you plug in the non-sammy cable into the wall charger, does it charge?

And it probably goes without saying, but are you going into wireless, usb, data connection and enabling it before plugging in? You're on stock rooted I assume? Have you tried any other ROM to see if maybe it's something in your existing ROM that is messed up?
I'd be annoyed too, cause I travel weekly and leave 1 cable home, carry one in my laptop bag, and one in the bag that goes in the overhead bin in my roller-board. If I had to buy 3 samsung branded cables I'd be pissoff'ed hehe
yes the sammy cable charges from the wall.
the sammy cable makes a connection whether or not i enable usb before i plug it in or not.
when i preactivate the usb connect with the sammy cable i get the android usb connected screen. when I do it with any other cable i get a message that says: "attention, usb is connected, remove the cable" uber confused
any i am stock. havent yet rooted.
I've had this problem with my captivate. My friend gave me a micro USB that didn't make a data connection but charged my phone. and what I learned was the cable came from a third party vendor and just doesn't establish data because of the type of cable. If it comes for a phone (used HTC cable to flash my cappy) or some type of other device that needs data it will work. third party cables just charge from what I learned.

After 3 hrs on the phone with att customer ser, tech support, and the warranty dept (2x) the best anyone came up with was, as u said, notall micro usb ard the same. I found an adapter that may hhave come with phone (female full usb to micro) that worked with a regularlarge usb double ended cable, that also worked, this is most likely a cable problem. What I need to find is a reliable source of data friemdly usb to micro cables. thanks for your reply
Hi All,
I ended up purchasing the Rezond based on the previous feedback, but I'm still in the test-drive phase. I'm really enjoying the phone so far and so far I'm thinking "keep". The included headphones are really great also compared to my previous headphones! I'll be waiting at least another week before I decide to keep the phone and decide to put a better ROM on the phone.
Anyway, what's the deal with the charge cable? Standard Micro-USB fits fine, but what's up with the funky cable that came with the device? Will this cause any problems using a longer standard cable or will it cause the phone to charge slower? Does this cable need to be used for proper connection to a PC?
Custom cables always make me leery.
Sorry if this has been asked, searching for custom usb, charge cable, custom cable did not return an results.
Its actually not a custom cable. It is a MHL adapter. Lots of talk about it in the Accessories forum.
Basically one port for charging and HDMI out instead of two separate ports.
You can charge fine with a regular micro usb cable, I don't think it's slower but I've never timed it.
If you want to get more like the ones that came with the phone you can get the HTC Flyer cables in white here:
http://www.expansys-usa.com/htc-flyer-data-cable-dc-t500-extmicro-usb-12pin-white-209995/
I bought two of them since I like the secure feeling of the snap in.
I've never tried using a regular micro usb for data and don't have one within arm's reach and I'm really super comfy right now so I'm not going to get up but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
In the accessories forum try searching "mhl cable" and I think you'll come up with two threads about it if you want further info.
I am using a blackberry (micro USB) cable at work, and the OEM cable at home, I see no different in charge time or PC connectivity between the 2 cable.
I also use a blackberry AC adapter to charge the rezound when I am in a pinch.
HTH.
Thanks.
I figured any standard micro-usb cable will work. A MHL cable makes sense though, I've just never actually seen one and I'm not familiar with the form factor.
I'll be looking into this, thank you again.
"MHL" A Lot More Solid
The MHL cable feels a lot more solid than a micro USB. I have a couple micro usb that have gotten loose, and now just fall out of the phone if turned over, or if I hit a bump in the car. Thanks for finding a source to buy more of the MHL cables.
Also here slightly less expensive.

How long are those cables? Doesn't say on the page; unless I'm blind.
There is no such thing as an "MHL cable".
The format of the port and cable that come with the Rezound is called "EXTMicro USB".
"MHL" refers to a standard for connecting small electronics to HDTVs. It works with a regular Micro USB cable. Last time I checked (a couple of weeks ago) there are no MHL adapters that utilize EXTMicro USB connectors. Most of the ones that I've found use a regular Micro USB connector.
At this time, it's unclear exactly what the extra 7 pins in the connector in this phone are for. Other HTC phones have used them for analog audio and video output, but this doesn't appear to be supported by the rezound.
If you look at your rezound, you will see it only has the 5 pins. It does utilize the ExtMicro USB plug end/shape. If it truly had the ExtMico USB then while using the mhl adapter it could charge your phone via A/C while streaming. But it can't because the data pins are being used/ there are only 5 pins.

That's an excellent point about charging while using an MHL adapter. One could still force fast charging through software, such as what's available in Incredikernel/control, though.
On my rezound, I most definitely have contacts in the extra spots. The cable my phone came with, however, doesn't have any pins for them to contact.

I noticed that I can not seem to turn the phone on while it is charging. I usually need to pull the usb plug out of the phone, push the power button to turn it on and then plug the usb back in for charging. Is this by design? If so, not quite sure why...
My other android phones never had this issue.
Also, please correct me if am wrong on this one as well. The USB port for Amaze is a standard micro USB. But for some reason usb side (male) of the charger that comes with the phone has a slightly different shape than regular micro USB plugs - so I can not use the same charger with my other devices that have micro USB (e.g. Sony reader, other phones). Yet a standard/traditional micro USB cables can be easily plugged in the Amaze. Again not sure why HTC decided to go with such design.
It almost feels that maybe I am missing on some "bigger picture" that gives a perfect logical explanation to these two observations...

I'm pretty sure the connector is an HDMI connector so you can connect it to a TV etc. But for why it won't start unless you unplug it beats me...maybe you're just not holding it long enough?
Thanks for clarifying about the port being also an HDMI. I totally missed it. Quite frankly, I did not even realise that micro HDMI and micro USB ports could be combined like that in one. This totally explains my second observation.
As far as not turning on while charging, I tried it many times including holding the power button for a few seconds but it does not come on unless I unplug. Normally when you turn it on there is a slight delay between the press and white "HTC" screen coming on. So maybe I am not waiting long enough and press again and it resets the "power on" command. Not sure...
Anyway, thanks for the info.
Mine turns on when I plug it in from an off state. I confirmed it last night right after my battery died.
Also the USB port is a 12pin. You will need a mHL adaptor to get the HDMI capabilities to work. You can check the Accessories Section.
You should look at your phone while its charging, it goes into recovery to charge but the backlight and colors stay off you can only see the text if your in direct sunlight that's why when you push the power button your basically pressing reboot system now (1st option) in clock work mod so in order to not get that while trying to turn it on while its charging well you have to take out the plug and the click the 1st option

Also, I believe some ROMs have issues with turning on while charging. I forget which ones or if I am thinking of something totally different.
I just noticed the same thing the last couple times my phone died, just figured it had something to do with the ROM or recovery.

So after breaking my original cable, I had it replaced by a regular universal cable that every other phone uses (the mini-usb or whatever) and, I can not get it to connect the two no matter what I do or what computer I use. I'm out of ideas and I don't know where I can get another stock cable. Any help?
It sounds like you just got a charging cable and not a data cable. You can't tell by looking but there is a difference. Plug in the cable and check the battery info. a data cable will show USB charging. You don't need an original cable, just make sure it is the data type.

go to control panel then programs and features
find htc bmp usb driver, htc driver installer, and htc sync
uninstall those three.
go here and download htc sync 3.0 and install.

As b5fan stated, the problem is the cable. Your new micro USB cable is a charging cable only. If you buy a data USB cable it will work. Doesn't have to be original.
Best Buy or Verizon are your best options.

If that doesn't work and your phone & computer are on the same wireless network search for software data cable in the play store. Download filezilla onto your computer and follow the directions in software data cable
Might be far fetched and blatently obvious, but had this happen to me...have you tried shutting down the computer, pull the power cable, press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds to clear any juice in the power supply, plug power cable back in and start it back up.
Don't ask me how that works, or how I came across those steps, but worked for me so far everytime.

That's the problem right there. As two previous posters have stated, you cannot data connect between a computer and your Rezound with a generic Micro USB cable that other devices use. The Rezound (as well as other HTC phones, I think) has a proprietary data/charge cord. Did you notice the shape of the connecting hole on the left side of your phone? It's not a true Micro USB hole, is it? It's a special HTC hole. Granted, you can plug a generic micro USB cord in (in the upside down position) to charge your phone... I do this every morning. However, you need the special HTC cord to get it to connect data to your computer.
My beef is this: why did a Verizon Wireless employee sell you the wrong cord? Take it back and demand an exchange for a proper HTC cord. Have them look at the phone's manual if they need proof. And if the employee gives you any lip about "well, we don't carry that cord in store", then smack him (don't do it if it's a girl) and remind him of the wonders of US postal services and that he can order the dang part from the Verizon website and have it shipped.

This is incorrect. The port is shaped differently for the MHL adapter. Any MicroUSB cable should carry charge/data unless it specifically says charge only.
I've been using this cable for both charge/data since my Droid 2 since I like to have a really long cable.
http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-6-Feet...I62Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334241291&sr=8-1
And this is why the port is shaped the way it is.

No problem. Based on the OPs info and saying that he broke the original cable (not sure what/how) and it doesn't work in multiple computers. I would assume the worst and say that he may have broken the port on the phone. I've done this before. Left the phone charging overnight, knocked the phone off the table while I was sleeping, and picked it up in the morning.
The phone still charged (although you had to hold the cable at the right angle), but data was a no go. The OPs hit must've been a serious though because the USB port on the Rezound is pretty stout.

Solid logic, but I actually broke the cable twice. The first time I pulled the metal piece out of the cord (which was just pushed back in, everything worked) but when it actually broke and was non-fixable the cable was simply pulled out of the phone and the cable came in two. Turns out a snug fit isn't so great after all. I don't know, mixed thoughts going through my head. And actually, I've been getting the computer hookup notification when I plug it into a socket. (Wallcharger, phone restarts quickly then the notification pops up and doesnt go away until it's unplugged and the notification is clicked on again)

Funny thing is, I did this and they told me they only carried the one I have now. Dissapointed I left thinking "what the hell, how can you only carry this cable when there is a much different one coming with the phone, that you, Verizon, sold me?" but of course, I avoided an epidemic and am doing everything I can and using alternate methods for file transfer. Only thing is I can't run RUU's because I can't relock my bootloader.
Recently picked up the v30 and purchased an otg cable to be able to hook my printer to my phone for work (did this on my g4 no problem). First plug shows up and when i plug it in, the phones usb status goes to "power supply" (like im trying to charge another device, not charge my v30). If i changs it to any other option, a second later it changes back to power supply. I thought this was strange as nothing was even plugged into the otg cable. Returned it and got another one of a different brand , same problem. Got a specific cord thats usb c on one end, printer plug on the other side. Same exact thing. All of these cables worked fine on my buddies Motorola, so at this point, i can only assume its the phone. I have tried plugging multiple devices to the otg cables, even getting a usb to micro usb to try my old otg cable and all had the same problem. Verizon sent a brand new phone to me thinking my cable port was bad. It did the same thing as well. If anyone else has run into this issue or has any advice, that would be much appreciated. My work printer is old and the wifi direct sucks to hook up constantly and it likes to disconnect in the middle of printing.

OTG Issues

Hi,
I have been having the same issues. I am trying to use the OTG adapter for my Meridian DAC. Ordered through Amazon 2 times, with different sellers claiming compatibility. But no luck.
And to concur with you, I get the identical issue where it switches momentarily to my selection, then Immediately goes to Power supply.

Regarding connecting a external DAC to the V30 I currently have that working with my V30 and my FIIO Kunlun E18. The cable used is below. I know that it's not the same thing that you are talking about because it's not exactly an OTG adapter but it works for my purposes. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the info.
Do I need to change anything in the settings?
Or is it basically plug and play?

.
This adapter saved me and my old sandisk flash drive back talking again.

It's plug and play but when the DAC is connected it asks you if you want to set a default app to the USB device. Be sure to select NO and just cancel out if window. I was selecting yes when I had USB pro music app installed and it prevented me from hearing anything from LG music player, YouTube, and other 3rd party apps.

I'm also facing the same issue with an otg adapter, exact same symptoms.
Is there any solution other than buying specific otg adapters like the ones listed above?
I've also noticed that my V30 is very picky when it comes to usb connection. I have an usb c flash drive, and if it moves in the slightest, the connection just drops. It also happens with some usb cables that I've tried to use to connect the phone with my pc.
