I'm considering getting an HTC One and getting the $30/mo 100 mins, 5Gb plan. I hope to use a VOIP app for most of my calling to make the 100 mins workable. Can anyone recommend a favorite VIP app, preferably one that works with Google Voice (since I've had a GV number for several years now)?

Yep, I agree with this and personally use both GrooVe IP and Talkatone for my Google Voice number.
Used GrooveIP fr the first time today. Sprint's 3g network does not seem able to handle it (surprise). Unless there is some setting I can tweak. Even on my home WiFi (23Mbps down, 3 up), a friend complained the voice quality wasn't great. I could hear him fine though. Of course, I can't judge after only two calls.
Hope to try it on Sprint's 4G LTE later.

More bad luck with Groove today. First, the person I called contnued complain about my voice breaking up. I tried adjusting the buffering, and he reported it got slightly better. But later I called two more people and both could not hear me, as if my mike was muted. I could hear them loud and clear. In fact, quality n my end was better than a typical cell call.
I have to repeat, Sprints network is really slow. But using Groove on my home WiFi yesterday was no better.

Internet calling on this plan has its highs and lows. Accepting and trying to work around the lows are an unavoidable part of having it, alas.

The T-Mobile $30 Prepaid Plan Users Thread has lots of talk about the plan the OP references, plenty of which relates to ways to do wifi calling.
The Free VoIP (internet call) Solutions for Smartphones thread opens with acegolfer's comprehensive and invaluable list of ways to do wifi calling along with some pros and cons for each.
There are plenty of other threads that deal with some of the specifics.
I used this plan for a few months until recently when I switched to a three phone family plan, which made more sense for the way we're using phones as a family. But I really enjoyed the 100 minute talk, 5GB data plan and was sort of sad to let it go. It's a terrific deal, at least by US terms, if you use a lot of mobile data and can live with its phone calling limitations. I have to say, though, that now that I'm on a more conventional plan, I'm happy to have more reliable calling and easier bluetooth usage in the car.
Maybe T-Mobile's wifi calling on the One would be useful with this plan. I don't know, because when we bought the One, we switched out of the $30 plan.
With the $30 plan, I used Spare Phone, which is in the same sort of category as GrooveIP and Talkatone. I had good luck with it, though you may need to do a little tweaking of settings, particularly related to microphone gain. That's the case with any of the VOIP software. Spare Phone's dev is responsive and helpful.
I used Vonage some, but found it to be hopelessly unreliable with lots of dropped calls and problems for whoever was at the other end of the conversation. I had to abandon it out of consideration for other people alone. It doesn't require a paid suscription. Just install the app, register and you're good to go for Vonage to Vonage along with Vonage to phone calling. Skype was much better, with better call quality than the Spare Phone/GrooveIP type stuff. Occasionally, I'd have problems there, too, but not that often. For longer calls, I tended to use that. Otherwise, I mostly I used Spare Phone, occasionally, I'd try GrooveIP.
If you really want to get geeky, the threads above will give you some other alternatives with better potential, but you'll have to invest some time with them, something you may or may not get enjoyment out of.
The biggest negative about all this is T-Mobile's shaky mobile data coverage. There are so many places with poor speeds or no coverage at all that you have to adjust to being in places where you're not going to be able to talk at times. And talking while in a moving vehicle often leads to dropped calls.

My understanding of Tmo's WiFi calling is that it uses your cell minutes, even though you're calling over the Internet (maybe because it still goes out over their network?).
I'll have to roll the dice with Tmo's data coverage, Sprint's is horrible. Actually, it became worse after they started rolling out their LTE. 3G speeds went down, when you can actually get them at all. 4G is very spotty right now. I'm sure their 4 G will improve, but I've had my EVO LTE a good (bad) year now and I'm tired of paying for promises. I'm in a populated area where I'd think coverage would be pretty good. And mostly it is. But there are improbable places where it's really weak or non-existent, mostly in residential areas just a few blocks from a busy street.

Free Vonage app. No subscription needed. Just install, set your caller ID, confirm it via text or receiving a call with a pin and you are good. It works great on wifi, OK on TMo 4g and I'm sure it totally sucks as all data does on Sprint non-LTE.
You can't receive calls on it though. I just call people right back and my number shows on their caller ID. Its a lot better than Groove or Talkatone.

In my home I get horrible 3g speeds. So bad I have to use wifi. Where I work (outside) I get terrible service and bad 3g speeds. I called Sprint about this issue and was told that area has good (not great) but good coverage. They told me to bring the phone in to have it looked at. I know its not the phone because this was the same with my Hero. I just want to know what my options are. I honestly feel like they should put a discount on my bill or give me unlimited roaming. This is a very bad problem. I drop calls like its going out of style and 3g isnt even an option. As for 4g, nothing at all. This has been going on for a while and Im really getting fed up. Any ideas?

A friend of mine works at Sprint and was telling me that evidently it plugs into your wireless router??? and goes for around $100 bucks but he swears that he's getting full bars throughout his entire house including the basement. Might at least help while at home...
Technically we all have free roaming. We roam for free on Verizon's network so in theory, you should never drop a call if you have either Sprint or Verizon service where you are. I know it worked that way for me on the Evo 4G and once I turned off all the roaming guard crap on the 3vo, it seems about as good as my old Evo 4G. So have you gone into Settings, Wireless, Mobile Network, and turned off the roaming notification sound and made sure you turn OFF all roaming guards?
Edit: BTW my neighbor has the Airave and it does give him 4 to 5 bars throughout his single-level 2850 sq/ft house. No problem keeping a call over there!

Called Sprint about this and the guy said Sprint charges a $36 activation fee for this type of unit. Also supposedly it does use your minutes on your plan, and you can pay an additional $10 a month to get unlimited minutes while connected to the Airave

I've heard of a bunch of people getting free airaves for having poor signal at home. Is it true that it only works for voice, though, not 3g? I can make and receive calls ok, but the 3g and 4g signals at my house are awful. And they have been for over a year. They were bad on my OG Evo. I just would like to be able to surf the net on my phone. Or, even, tether occasionally, if we loose power to the main network. Thanks.

i have had the airave since it was in existance. i was actually a tester for them before they went public. the one you linked it the old model 1X. the one you want is http://www.cnet.com/8301-17918_1-20014429-85.html
it is 3G capable. all and all a way better unit. if you call up explain your situation. for me what actually got me one many yrs ago was basically the truth. told them i am in a on cal field. i need my cell to ring when i am called no tgo to voicemail. if they could not provide me a way to fix it. i simply was going elsewhere. then i was offered to test a new device. ended up being the first airave. back then device was free and 4.99 a month which i was credited every month so was essentially free to me. now on the new one it is actually free per month 0 dollars. as long as you qualify.

Its definitely Sprint.. my company works with Sprint, and although they havn't said it was their problem, they are asking for all reports in our buildings of radio errors (network failure, data failure, can't make calls, text's come in with timestamp 4-5 minutes before the time they came in).
I personally thought it was the 3D, b/c I had a OG the day before and everything was fine, then I get to work and can't make calls with full signal. We have the sprint antanae's throughout our building, so something is up. It seems to only effect me at work though -- which is pleasantly located beneath the jet base flight path.

If you get the Airvana which is the second version of the Airave, you will get 3G as well. I've had it ever since I had my first EVO. I'm in a great coverage area but for some reason, I don't get any signal in my apartment or about a 1/2 block in either direction from my apartment.
The Airave works great. Whether or not you can get one free (normally $99 + $5 per month) depends on your situation and if you convince them its the right thing to do. I had to talk to 4 supervisors and a manager before they agreed to give it to me for free.
I got an Airave for free, just dialed 611 and talked to a rep, said I had to stand by a window or go outside to avoid dropping calls. Didn't have a problem getting one, the rep agreed that would solve the issue. Works wonders in the house.

Kinda sad that you need a airave or to go outside just to make a phone call. Did you tell sprint its 2011 ?
1. Yes there's a huge issue in terms of 3G speeds that have been going on since the Evo came out. There are more users on their network but they haven't expanded it. I took the issue so far that I was talking to people "From the Office of Dan Hesse" (Yes, I'm serious. I still have the voicemails and emails). It took them a while to go from "It might be your phone" to "OK, it's probably not your phone" to "The network in your area is crowded" to "Ok the network is overloaded everywhere". They promised me it would be fixed by May (this was going on since this past January). I used to get 1.5 Mbps 3G speeds and 15 (YES 15) Mbps 4G speeds, but now I'm lucky if I hit 500 Kbps on 3G and 4 Mbps on 4G.
And yes, they will send you an Airave. My internet bandwidth wasn't enough to support my Vonage VOIP modem and the Airave, so I put it aside. What they don't tell you is that if you don't use it for 3 months, you have to send it back or you owe them $200 (or $150, I forgot). You can always ask for it again later, but it's kind of grimy they don't tell you that. I got a surprise phone call about it. The good thing about the Airave is that after it's on your account, you can make it so that anyone can use it or you can limit it to certain phone numbers (like you and your family, for example). It does 5 calls at once tops. The BAD thing about it is that it will use your pool of minutes even if your calling a mobile number (free mobile to mobile doesn't apply).
And yes it does 3G. I HATE this about Sprint, but they're the cheapest carrier, which is why I put up with them. Also I just applied for a job with them; just waiting for the paperwork to go through on their end.
The alternative to the Airave is to download an app called Roam Control from the Market. Yeah it's like $4 but you don't need root to use it on the 3D. It lets you force roaming. But beware:
Sprint's roaming rule is this: If more than half the total minutes you use in a billing cycle are roaming minutes, for 3 months in a row, you'll get a warning letter in the mail. Do it again and they'll terminate you. Data I'm not sure, but being more expensive to them than voice, I'm gonna say don't go crazy. Also when you roam, even though it says 3G, you're on 1x.
I have thought about asking for an Airave, just havent gotten around to it. As for roaming, what people need to understand is that it really isnt free. When you roam mobile to mobile (which normally is free), eventually they start using your anytime minutes. When I had my Hero (rooted) I was able to set it to roam all the time, and I was on the phone a good 2 hours a day. Next thing I know, I had a $600 phone bill. I was told that if you use it excessively, they start to use your anytime minutes. I thought this was retarded since just about every call one makes, is to another mobile phone. I really just want them to give me unlimited roaming and Ill be set. Gonna give them a call eithher today or tomorrow and see what can be done. Airave will help me at home, but not on the road.
The Airave does have 3G but really, what's the point? It hooks to your internet router which probably has WiFi anyway so you might as well just connect via WiFi. We checked the 3G speeds on the Airave and got about 600/900. Connected to the same WiFi router, you get 17,000 and 2,000.

Just a tid-bit about roaming. Yes, it's free to roam, but I sometimes get stuck between a rock and a hard place with signal where it picks up the most faint Sprint signal, which is so weak that nothing works, but enough to not roam to VZ's network. Not much you can do about that if that happens to you.
What I just got, but haven't spent much time with yet is RoamControl (paid app in market). It allows you to force roaming and works without root on the Evo 3D. Though, I do want to say word of warning that Sprint can drop you from their service all together if you abuse the roaming. Not sure what the rules are about it, but word of warning.

What did you change in the settings? I've been looking to make the roaming popup go away, but I couldn't get it to go away on my OG Evo either...

The Airave broadcasts it's own CDMA signal, and connects to your internet connection to route calls. If you call Sprint and complain about coverage, they'll usually give you an Airave for free with free service. I've got one (Airvana w/3G), and it works excellent.

We get coverage in the house, but it's a low signal with the occasional dropped call. The airave assures that we don't have any dropped calls.

I just got the HTC EVO View 4G off a deal on the internet and I really don't want to activate with Sprint (bad issues about 10 years ago). Is there any way to activate it on any other network carrier or am I stuck with SPRINT or WIFI?

This doesnt belong in development.. I'm not sure though... I heard you can get 4g service with clear since they provvide sprint with 4g service.. Not sure about 3g though

You can activate it on cricket service, I've done one and it works pretty well. Of course you will only get 3g instead of 4g as Cricket does not have 4g yet. I had everything working except incoming calls would not ring through, still working on it. However, texting, mms, web, apps, and google voice worked great. I could get incoming and outgoing calls through google voice just fine.

Cricket has an android plan for their smart phones which gives you unlimited talk/text/data for $55 per month. That is the method I used. Their 3g is pretty decent where I'm at, but like most carriers Cricket will throttle you if you exceed your data usage. I have not been throttled yet, but I do not use an awful lot of data. I believe there is a way to use the $45 per month plan which requires a few more steps flashing the View, but I have not tried it and I am not sure how reliable it would be.
I saw a program called flash to talk android studio that might let you do it. Thing is , its $50 for the program and $5 each time you use it. I think a lot of stores use it to flash android phones between carriers. If its worth it to you, check it out.

I currently use mine on boostmobile for 3g and i use clearwire for 4g. did a few things that im sure i cant speak of here. but yes you can put it on other carrier's. where i am at cricket/metro doesnt work so i could not go that route otherwise i may have. I use boostmobile because 4g can be spotty sometimes and the 3g is a good backup anywhere 4g doesnt kick in. i had it on sprint but for 1gig of data my monthly was coming in at like 50 with insurance and taxes and no 4g...just pathetic. my alternative gives me pay as you go like 11 bucks a month flat no taxes unlimited 3g/text/no phone at least the normal way but till that is figured out i'm happy using groove ip with google since my data is always on no need to spend talk minutes just use data for talk hence why it costs .35cents a day. and as for 4g well i'm on an older clear plan and i share it with my hotspot(switching back through the login page pretty easy) again i'm not explaining how to do it as in many places its not allowed to talk of the method's tut, i'm just sharing that there are ways. If I was able to use it on other carriers that worked in my area i would or if sprint wouldnt try and be a ripoff and give a decent plan a realistic plan i would just stick with them.
AT&T is secretly throttling all of its smartphone customers during phone calls. This was tested on several devices including the Galaxy Note.

Yeah it's really noticeable when you do something try to send a picture message while on the phone. The upload speed is just crazy low.
No throtling being done here. From my understanding during a phone call lte simply cannot be used in conjunction with voice calling, so the LTE radio is turned off and voice is sent over hspa+(or whatever other bands its using) and data switches to HSPA+. So not neccesarily intentional throttling per say, just hardware and technological limitations. Once VoLTE is more common practice I'm sure this will change.

That's not really true. If it were then the faster the connection you have, the faster your on call connection would be. If what you were saying was true then when I'm in an area that gets 9 megs during a call, I should get better on-call data speeds than if I was in an area with 2 megs. Instead regardless of if I'm in a 9 meg or 2 meg area, my data speeds during a call still instantly drop down to around 1 meg and the upload ALWAYS goes down to the 20k area (even if I'm in an area that gives me over 2 megs of upload. BTW, it wasn't always like this either. It isn't a limitation of technology, it's a limitation placed by AT&T, most likely to save spectrum. The crazy thing to me is they air these talk and surf commercials but you can barely do it now. If you compare it to Tmobile, it's like night and day.
I saw that the other day when I was on a call. Thought I was just in a bad area. Just tested on my coworkers note while he's on a call, same thing. Lame.

How is it a hardware and technology limitation if the SAME PHONES perform DIFFERENTLY on different networks using the same technology?
Ok some of you guys really need to research more about how AT&T's 4G lte network works lol,Lte is purely for data so when not on a call the phone will sit on the lte band but the moment you make or receive a call the network hands off the phone to a hspa, hspa+ or edge (connection if the other 2 3g connections hspa or hspa+ is not available) . Once the call is done the phone should switch back to the preferred lte connection. Currently not being able to make voice calls over lte is a limitation by the tech, once voice over ip is ready to be implemented on lte then we're good to go.

I can confirm this on my Note. I thought it was just an odd quirk for me but I'm partially glad to hear it affects everyone. On my old HSPA phone I could maintain 2-3 Gbps at home even while on a call - useful for work so I could be on a conference call while also remoting to my work computer's desktop. Now when I'm on a voice call the data connection becomes nearly useless. I may have to switch back to my old phone next time I need to do this - which is ridiculous!
So even if a phone call does force you onto HSPA, they are still throttling you far below the available bandwidth.

This issue has nothing to do with LTE though. I know I saw someone earlier in the thread bring it up, but that has no bearing on what we're experiencing.
I noticed the same thing as well last week when I would make calls. LTE shuts off, 4G kicks in for calls. Hang up, LTE turns back on. Just like Verizon's no data while talking its simply a hardware limitation on the network for now.

From what I've experienced it goes beyond just kicking you down to the HSPA network.
They definitely changed this. Tested this extensively when the skyrocket came out
The hardware is not capable of both seperate radios operating at the same time and voice over lte has not been implemented.
Plain and simple.
When you make a call the lte radio goes idle. The hspa (3g and hspa+) radio activates
Speeds during call should be the equivelant of speeds achieved with a 3g phone...like we confirmed with a gs2 Back then

tested 3g speeds...added the phone apn and select it. It may or may not work but if it works it will lock you onto 3g briefly enough to do a speed test. Compare that to your in call tests. or use a 3g only phone To get a comparison test IN REAL TIME
Technically att could begin throttling but it could be network issues as well.

Scratch everything i said...they have obviously changed this since those tests we did. In call Speeds come in at 600 kbps and no upload at all and out of call 3+ mbps
Althouh slow...600 mbps should load pages etc...but it isnt.
Definitely something screwy going on. ..time to call att again

So...if you have slow speeds while on a call either the 3g network is having issues or the 3g speeds suck there. You absolutely will not achieve lte speeds in a call.

That's what I was talking about. I could live with a fallback to HSPA until they implement voice on LTE, but the results are much slower than that.

Perhaps YOU should do a little more research...I assure you I am not a ROOKIE when it comes to these things. I have known for a fact that people were able to surf and talk on AT&T's network in the past without any problems. Now internet is practically UNUSABLE while on a call. Pages wont even load. There is something very underhanded going on.
Even by your own statement the phone should revert to 3g speeds while a call is being placed so why are speeds equivalent to EDGE/Dial Up when people have adequate signal strenght?
i decided i may activate my view but sprint doesn't get coverage in this are. i was wondering if there is anyway to unlock it to work on a different carrier.
i tried searching on here and google but all it showed me was results for rooting and unlocking the bootloader both of which i have done, but i could have missed something it is almost 5am.
any help is appreciated thanks.
I would consider a tethering plan or rooting your phone to tether that way.
CDMA phones are simply a no go for that. The View is just too good not to keep though. Beautiful device and it works very well.

I've heard you can make it work on Clear, but if you don't have Sprint service, it's pretty unlikely you'll have Clear service.
I'm pretty sure you can get it working on Boost Mobile.
With a CDMA device, your options for moving to a device to a different carrier are basically non-existent. You're essentially limited to the carrier that sells the device and any pre-pay carriers (and sometimes small, regional carriers) that use the network of the original carrier.
Unfortunately, Boost is going to have the same issue, since they are just a prepaid brand of Sprint. You can try PagePlus, though their data rates aren't exactly the cheapest.

Yeah, if you don't get good Sprint service you count Boost Mobile out. I'm on Boost and love it. I'm on the $15 a month plan and its worked out real good for me. The speeds are acceptable and are more than enough to listen to an MLB game or watch a movie on Netflix without constant buffering. Groove ip and google voice give me an extra phone number with unlimited calling if I should ever need it.
Your best bet is to tether like someone above me has posted. Only real drawback to that is that tethering drains your battery rather quickly.

Also, have they started allowing WiMax access yet? I remember reading something about Boost having access to the Clear network soon.

Lucky you. Sprint 3G in my area wasn't fast enough to do much of anything, especially nothing that involved video or music.
Could you guys help me out please? Is there an app that can make and receive phone calls and make calls over wifi? not with Google Voice, but with the Verizon number itself. For Android and iOS if you guys happen to know. Thank you!

i'm looking for something that can be used in a place where there is poor reception but has wifi...i think Tmobile has a feature like that but verizon doesn't offer it cause they are dumb...but they are the only ones that have coverage in my area sadly..
Nothing that I know of I'm afraid. Are you having signal issues or worried about minutes? Verizon has a network extender for home use that basically does wifi calls but I'm not sure why you're asking.

yea spending $300 for signal is really just crappy...but thank you all! hope verizon is smart enough to add the feature soon...it'd save them data and voice usage even though they made it unlimited already...thank you all again
There's no option to do it on the DNA but if you get a One S or any T-mobile phone you can. (not really sure what you're trying to accomplish or I'd have better information for you. sorry)

Sorry..I tryed to explain in the third post, but I need it because there is poor reception at my work place. i can only get signal at one or two places. However, i have cable internet so i wanted to just use wifi to make calls but that is sadly not possible without giving out a new number and stuff to people...
Best bet is to use groove-ip setup with Google voice. This will allow you to receive the calls and text while at work. You could always while at work forward all your calls to Google voice. that way no one ever know you have a different number. I assume that those you want to text while at work are close to you so giving them a at work number shouldn't be a big deal breaker.
Also no other carrier has WiFi calling because T-Mobile had a very bad service when they first brought it out... If you look at some of their newer phones they are not including it on them as well. I bet it will be completely stopped once their 4g is rolled out about 50% complete. They would lose to much money. Right now it is a perk most are sticking with them for.

You could forward calls inside of the phone or call Verizon or use a call forwarding app from the market.

Set up a pbxes account. Download csip from the store. Set up google voice but select do not make calls. Login to pbxes with csip and now you have a compltetly free new line on your phone that you can use on wifi like a normal phone

T-Mobile has 28 different phones that have wi-fi calling. And there newer phones have it still. I think that It just makes sense that all of the carriers would put wi-fi calling on there phones. Since more and more phones are using more data over the networks..
Or you could call Verizon. Complain that you have really crappy signal in your area, to the point where you can't make phone calls and hope that they give you a network extender.
Groove IP and google voice work great.

I did this and all they said was here is a link, you may want to invest in this. So they will just tell you buy the network exstender.
