[Q] Help with the Nook Recovery and ROM flashing process. - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

This is not my first Android device and I'm familiar with the process of flashing ROMs. Usually I would follow a guilde to root my device, flash a recovery then use Rom Manager or something similar to flash the latest recovery before trying the ROMs I wanted but the Nook is a little different. I managed to root my Nook, then I tried to use Goo Manager to install TWRP but I could not get the Nook to boot in to recovery after I did. I ended up using a CWM installer .apk to flash CWM 5.x.x. That all went well. I then tried to flash Cyanogen 10.1. It seemed to install fine but when I reboot it starts to show the Cyanogen boot animation then freezes and shuts down. Doing some research it seems like not every recovery works with every rom? I think I also saw somewhere that I need to flash Cyanogen 7 before I do 10? I keep finding random different bits of information all over these forums (some newer some older) and it's hard to find definitive answers. If someone could come in and point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. I would preferably like to flash an up to date recovery where I can try out different ROMs easily as I please without having to flash a new recovery or unbrick my Nook every time. What recoveries do you use and what is your normal ROM flashing process?

You don't need to install CM7 but a CWM 6.x.x is needed. If you have an earlier version CWM you can use that to flash the higher version. Under C in this post I give a link to where I found mine when I did my first CM10 install. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2081981

I'm not sure what link you are referring to, k
But in the one I provide there are links to Verdicts ftp pages. If you go there you need to choose what to download once you're there.

Is Clockwork Mod Safe

I've been using AmonRA recovery since I got the Optimus in December and I am comfortable with it. I've tried out Miks port of CM7 and while it's great, i sorely miss the battery performance I was getting on Froyo with Void and running 824mhz stable without any problems. That and bluetooth is sorely missed. I want to give OpenOptimus a shot, but I am extremely weary of trying to install Clockwork Mod again, because the one time I attempted it I ended up bricking my phone. Thankfully, the guy at the Tmo kiosk in the mall just gave me a new one no questions asked. I wouldn't be so hesitant to install CWM on my phone if I could install the img just like I did with AmonRA instead of trusting Rom manager to do it for me.
I don't suggest you to flash recovery via ROM manager. IMHO ClockworkMod is better, has much more options. If you'll flash the 3.1.0.0 version using my flashable zips you won't brick anything. And remember to give openOptimus a shot, you won't regret it

I'm not sure I understand correctly. I thought that clockworkmod was the recovery that is installed by Rom Manager. All of the instructions for installing CWM simply say to install Rom Manager. Ultimately, I do aim to install OpenOptimus but I need to switch from running AmonRA recovery to CWM recovery. And what exactly do you mean by flashable zip? I installed AmonRA using the ADB and an .img file. it there is a thread anywhere here that clearly details the process to install CWM recovery, please point me to it.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1065197 - download and flash ZIP from recovery. Done.
Sorry about that. I didn't realize that you could actually flash a recovery from within the recovery. I just switched to CWM and flashed OpenOptimus. Waiting for first boot as I'm typing this.

yes a stated above u can just enter into recovery and flash any recovery u want from the link pointed out above and its safe ,since u already have recovery installed u dont need to flash recovery via rom manager and just remember that any backup taken from any recovery would be restored using the same recovery. To clear all doubts the problem has been solved and installing recovery from rom manger works flawlessly now. Note:Its advisable to use rommanager for ppl not having recovery installed just download the latest rom mager and flash choosig ur phone type.
slightly off topic, but does anyone know where I can get the T-Mobile branded P509 kdz stock firmware just in case I end up needing to roll back to stock? I can't seem to find it anywhere, the_ERROR's thread on howto is closed and the links don't work anymore.

nope its not safe at all using rom manager ~
I flashed CWM and my friend died a few days later.
So no it's not safe.
For me there are no problems with clockworkmod and RomManager. Flashed cwm via RomManager and everything is fine here.

it not about using rom manger for flashing rom ,it just to get the cwm recovery and then going into recovery and using it from there.
Many had problems flashing rom from clockwork so that not advisable but installing cwm is fine 100% sure
M happy with CWM
Don't use tricks like ROM Manager... It's just matter of learning to use a recovery, not that difficult.. just IMHO
You just need to use ROM manager Once to get recovery. After that you can delete the program and enjoy the CWM recovery.
I have been there, I have done it, You do want it
CWM works beautifully without problems..
I use rom manager just to reboot to recovery, as i am too lazy to use the 3 button combo to goto recovery.
Flashed ROMs and zips with CWM. 100 % safe untill now..
The new updared Rom Manager has solved that issue.

How much I've learned in just a month!
I can't believe I had to ask that question. I know now that there are numerous ways to flash recoveries. My personal preference is to do it manually using the adb.

No, it is not 100% fine, in fact it lacks any sanity checks whatsoever.
Just flash CWM through your current recovery and you'll be fine. It's by far the safest method. If you flash through ROM Manager and after reboot you get stuck in fastboot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1015332 ... happened to me, unbricked it with some slight changes to the tutorial. Nothing important.
PS: If you don't use Rom Manager you can always do a $su then #reboot recovery in a terminal (Downloadable from market) to reboot directly to recovery.

[Q] why does each rom requires different recovery version?

I currently have tenfar's CWM installed.
I looked at the PiCrust thread where it says specifically that I need Romracer's Recovery (and not to use CWM from rom manager).
That made me wonder why does different ROMs require different recoveries ?
Also, what might happen if I use my CWM to flash PiCrust ? soft brick? hard brick?
Well they probably all would work, Tanfars has been reported in having problems clear caches, and the rom manager does not support external sd cards (at least last I looked at it, which was some time ago) so Romracers is pretty much the best to use on an Atrix right now. put if pushed I bet all would work OK in a pinch.
I would not worry about bricking your phone if you used the wrong version, it would just not work most likely and do nothing to your phone.
Thanks !
your explanation of the differences between the versions helped me to understand this issue - its a matter of features and bugs and not something different in the "core" functionality of the recovery.
I will probably update to romracer - as soon as I understand how
If I created a backup with one version will it resoter on the other ?
It also depends on when the rom was first posted. The older roms require Tenfars Pretty much all recently posted roms require RomRacer's recovery.

^^^This is the reason why ^^^ Older ROM OPs are dated, and the devs are not updating install instructions.

well i dont understand it either. i have succesfully been able to flash every single rom on this forum with the same cwm "Atrix 3.2" i believe its called.
so i am sticking to this cwm just because it works great and have nice colors.
and if i for some reason need to flash gingerblur 4.5 or something old i will just do it with the old recovery which came as an installable apk, before the bootloader got unlocked.

I have seen that - but PiCrust writes :
"Do NOT use CWM installed from ROM Manager!"
and in noob section it is explained how to install romracer version using rom manager.
since I already have tenfar's cwm - I can just do a zip install through tenfars cwm which will replace cwm to romracer's version, right ?

Yes, you should be able to flash RomRacers version via Tenfars CWM. Make sure you don't have the .sh file first, which you would need to delete.
As far as the ROM Manger thing goes... in the N00B guide, I just explain how to install RomRacers CWM via ROM Manager... so yes, your installing ROM Manager, but if you follow the steps, your actually using RomRacers version through ROM Manager (and not the actual ROM Manager version) as a end result.

That's the romracer recovery which has been the most current but I have read that Rom Manager's CWM has been updated to 5.xxx so I would like to know if anyone has ventured into those waters???

Actually I don't think any rom requires any recovery if you understand how to do it on your own Just saying.
Actually the "do not use ROM Manager's CWM" instruction is dated, the latest CWM that ROM Manager will install for you works completely fine, has ext4 support and will let you install both from SDCard and internal storage.

[Q] Flashing Official clockworkmod Touch recovery after rooting with CF-ROOT

Hi All,
I have tried to find an answer to this question on XDA forum and tried to google it as well, but came up with nothing. So if it has been answered before, I apologize in advance.
I have rooted my i9100 using CF-ROOT. I was running XWLP8 so I used the corresponding rooted kernel and all is well. Currently I am using Resurrection Remix latest version.
No I want to have official clockworkmod touch recovery on my phone. I have installed ROM Manager and downloaded recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.5-galaxys2.zip from clockworkmod website. I flashed it using CWM that came with CF-ROOT.
This is where things go wrong. After I flashed the new recovery and tried to reboot into recovery from ROM Manager, I got a blank screen. Tried to press some buttons but it gave me an intermittently flashing white screen, nothing else.
I tried to reboot normally again but it wouldn't do that either. I guess it was a soft brick.
So I had to flash CF-ROOT kernel using Odin, and then flash Resurrection Remix again. After that, things are ok. But now I am reluctant to try the new touch recovery.
So my question is, has anyone encountered this before? If so, is there a proven way to this?
Thanks for your help.
Rom manager doesn't work on S2.
Get the zip file and flash using cwm as normal and it will be updated to touch.
NOOOOOOOO DO NOTTTTTT use rom manager.
That thing is responsible for so much damage over the last 12 month, it sucks big time.
Look whats the issue here, if you have flashed cfroot kernel then you alread have a version of recovery on your phone which is no different to the official cwm recovery, get the same things, and you get the cwm app in ya app drawer, very very powerful little rom and kernel flashing tool indeed.
SO, what is it you really want, at a guess id say, you really want to the touch recovery, because the normal one isnt going to give you anything different to what you already have.
Goto the recovery site or use google to find it, download the latest version for your phone, stick it on the root of your sd card, reboot to cwm recovery that you already have, and choose to flash zip.
Done.
Thank you all, I will try this method as spoon as i manage and let you know. Thanks

[Q] How to replace TWRP with Clockwork Recovery mod?

I want to try and get the cyanogenmod 10.1 ROM on my phone, but I just tried it through TWRP and it didn't work (kept getting Service Wizard and Gapps not working in beginning). I looked through the forum right here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2121931
and post #5 said it can't be flashed through TWRP. So, now I want to get rid of TWRP and try to use clockwork recovery mod in order to install the ROM. How would I go on about deleting TWRP and installing clockwork recovery mod?
You can install ROM Manager and install Clockwork Mod through there, although I have flashed clockwork mod from TWRP and vice versa before.
I have no idea why but the cyanogemod won't install, and it keeps falling on clock work, I even tried the older versions from 4/20/13. Have no idea what to do now

So a somewhat related question here. I installed twrp with goomanager after rooting and all the installation instructions I see for roms say to use a loki'd recovery. As I understand it, it's just another installation method. Does it matter?
