[Q] Simple question, will +REP - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Software atm:
Android Version: 4.0.4
Baseband Version: I9100XXLQ6
Kernel version: 3.0.15-I9100XWLP-CL941023 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT Fr Jul 27 18:08:15 KST 2012
Build number: IMM76D.XWLPT
Just tried going Settings/About/Software update... every time it just wrote no update available, now for the first time it actually started downloading a 391.03 package and I canceled it cuz I need advice from you guys.
To keep things short, I'm satisfied with 4.0.4. flash player works, great battery life...
How are things going on JB? Is it worth updating at all? Cuz I've been reading alot of you guys are experiencing bad battery life, also no flash player?
Thanks a lot for your time and answer. :cyclops:

To each his own mate!
My experience with JB will be different from another member's experience.
I suggest you make a backup and try JB. If you don't like it, return to ICS.

hmm
I'm guessing I would need to root/flash recovery and do the backup from there?
Or there's another way to do the backup of current stock non-rooted ROM?

Maybe not 4.0.4 though.....and restoring a 4.0.4 nandroid?....only as a last resort. .....

You can try jb by updating it.....
If u want to jump back to ics you can download the official ics and flash it thru odin and still retain its genuinity(non rooted) version......
And this will be the best way for you if u dnt wanna root ur device....

No.. I didn't mean nandroid backup! Just make backups using apps like Super Backup or Titanium Backup. If ur rooted, u can backup ur app data also.
Please read about eMMC Brickbug issue on 4.0.4.

^This suggestion sounds tempting and I want to do it.
But, you guys confused me a bit, it's not safe to do a 4.0.4. downgrade after I installed JB?
I'm not interested in backing up apps or things like that, just the pure ROM itself so I can return to 4.0.4. if I don't like JB for some reason, but if it ain't safe I ain't gonna do it. :cyclops:
Also Titanium Backup is for app/contacts backup not the ROM itself right?

4.0.4 has been known to brick a few S2's due to a faulty emmc chip. If you have this faulty chip and you perform a data wipe; you could brick your phone beyond recovery......
And yes, Titanium Backup is for apps and data not the OS. Restoring the OS is done with a nandroid backup in cwm recovery

cwm-touch-6.0.1.1-i9100[1].zip

please help me...
I don't exactly understand what you mean but if you want to permanently change your recovery, I suggest you flash a custom kernel like Philz kernel or Siyah
I think your cwm zip file is a temporary recovery which is not very safe.

Yes, I understood mate. U need a custom recovery called ClockworkMod (CWM). It has those options and allows u to flash custom roms.
Since ur on JB, to get CWM recovery, u need to flash a custom kernel like Philz or Siyah. Try searching for them.
Feel free to ask any doubts u may have after searching.

Ah, so you want to install a rom, lol, well friend all you need is to do is flash a custom kernel (most custom kernels have permanent custom recovery) and reboot into recovery using the buttons and then do as your rom instructs you to, if you flash latest Philz kernel you will get a recovery with touch support to play with.

kernel for S2
Dear Senior member,
does Philz , siyah work with any rom (AOSP / AOKP).
or they are designed to work with specific roms only.
I'm using Supernexus 2 build 4 but siyah v5 doesnt wotk on it dori makes my phone over heated
Dear junior member,
What does the supernexus threas say regarding this matter?
Siyah v5 works with ICS, siyah v6 works with JB (doesn't perform well tho).

[SOLVED] New to this phone, sorry if I am asking noob questions.

I recently bought an S 2 after losing my rooted Optimus One. I downloaded a lot of apps and games, now I have tremendous battery drain. It switches off with 2g network on in 6 hours. I found a topic in this forum about gemini app manager. But it needs root. Then I found CF-root. It says it's a kernel. If I use ODIN to flash it, will it format my system? Also, am unable to decide which version of it I should download. This is my about phone

Flashing a kernel will not format ur system.
You can read the instructions given in the CF kernel thread on how to select the correct version.
Since ur on 4.0.4, I suggest you read about eMMC Brickbug issue on 4.0.4.
Check it with the 'Got Brickbug?' app on XDA.
So, to be safe, its better to avoid CF Root kernels. Use Siyah kernel instead.
Since you are new here, I have asked the mods to move ur thread to the correct section. This is the general section. Questions should be posted in the Q & A Section.

Hi buddy.
Use siyah kernel and just flash it via odin.
Just go to www.gokhanmoral.com and search for an appropriate kernel starting with version no. 5.x
Download it, enable usb debugging on ur phone, reboot into download mode and flash via odin.
This is the most efficient and easy way to gain root access on ur phone.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. I actually lurked moar and found an old thread which just had busybot and cwm, I flashed it and got root. I tried some jelly bean roms but the battery drain was pretty bad, especially PA 3.15. So I checked for a stable cm rom and found cm9. I used it for a day now and the battery is amazing.
I now have another problem, though. Can't make native video calls. Found out all cm and aosp based roms have this problem. Does the roms based on stock rom have this feature?
Thanks.
Having never used any cusROMs other than CM builds, I can't say for sure.......but,
There are parts of a Samsung Firmware that are 'closed source'...in other words...illegal to replicate, copy or duplicate in any way.....
I believe that video calling as well as fm radio and one or two other parts fall into this category.......

Used only CM builds, now that's an achievement. I can't stand to use CM nightlies(stable builds are a different matter though) , aside from broken features random bug's pisses me, one time it wiped my call log for no reason at all and I had to make up for something by travelling 150km. Visit the Galaxy W forum......
CyanogenMod has never officially supported the W, and while they DO have unofficial 7, 9, 10 and 10.1, they're all at beta or rc stage....and what's worse is that it's just ONE dev who is running and maintaining ALL the builds....Arco68.....the man is a genius doing some INCREDIBLE work.......

[Q] Custom Firmware Install

Hi, Im new here.. so hello to everyone...
Ok I have an unbranded open S2 GT-i9100. Firstly I wanted to know what phone i have from the baseband version and build. see below.
Baseband: I9100XXLQ6
Build: IMM76D.XWLPT
Secondly i want to put Biftor v8 on there. Fed up waiting for samsung to realease on kies.
How do i go about it? do i need a kernal to match my build and do i have to root before installing Biftor or can it all be done at once?
Any details would be great. thanks.
Root it, wipe it and flash it. If you want to know how: feel free to search and read on xda Guides aren't there to ignore you know.
Thanks I appreciate the fast reply. However my question wasnt really answered. I am happy to root, wipe and flash it but my main consern is what kernel i need to root it. Do i need a kernel that matches my current version.
If so is my version XXLQ6 or XWLPT
Thanks...
If ur gonna flash a CF kernel to root, look up the kernel version in ur About Phone page. The baseband version is not relevant here.

Hi again, so I did some searches. Apoologies for not being thorough first time round. And i discovered how to root. and i also discovered im in a prime position to hard brick. insane chip and 4.0.4.
so i think i need to change my kernel to siyah kernel or similar. Will i then be safe to install biftor etc? if so do i wipe cache etc when i install biftor. Will moving to siyah kernel remove risk of hard brick when restoring / wiping.
thanks

Yes, flash a custom kernel first, that matches your android version (4.0.4 -> Siyah v5 for example).
Then you'll be safe to flash custom firmware. Follow the instructions on the first page of Biftor's thread, then you'll know all you need to know

I imagine it will be one of the 3x versions (Had a look at all the Nandroid backups I have on my PC, I seemed to be using 3x versions with roms around that time). Tell you what, if you can at least find out what version you need (and make absolutely sure it's the right version, I'm only doing this once), I'll upload it here/attach it to a post.

Not sure. I stopped using it at 4x so I don't have any of the 5x kernels, you can get both 4x & 5x from Gokhan's DevHost space.

Yes. You'd think the worst that could happen would be bootloop, which you solve by flashing the right one. However, if it were me, I wouldn't flash anything until I knew for certain which version was which. Why the rush ?
Edit - Have been reading posts here which mention 3.3.2/3.3.3 & Android 4.0.3, which is what I thought in my first post in this thread. My recommendation in this post stands; don't flash anything until/unless you're 100% sure which version to use.

[Q] Seriously messed up by Galaxy S2

Unfortuntely I have messed up my UK Galaxy S2 I91000G.
Id successfully rooted using this method and installed Neat ROM.
Happily used this for a while and then decided to play and installed Blazing kernal
The problems then started. It simply booted to the Samsung S2 screen and hung. I couldnt get in to Recovery mode.
Got it in to to Download mode and despite trying methods here Im not getting much luck. I can flash a kernal using Odin. Tried official ones and CWM and they install fine. The phone reboots and I get to the Galaxy S2 screen with the yellow warning triangle.
However whenever I try and flash a ROM it fails. Tried official ones from the fixit thread plus others. All the same outcome.
Is there a bootloader I can try or anything else I can do before I trash it?! Any help much appreciated.
So....flashing a kernel is a pass and flashing a ROM is a fail?
That's a new one.

Oh. Thats not good news!
That does seem to be whats happening:
Flash a kernal - Pass and phone reboots and I get the S2 screen with warning triangle.
Flash a ROM - Fails and back to "Firmware upgrade encountered a problem. Connect phone to Kies."
Flash a kernal again and back to S2 screen.
Any ideas?

Can only get it to get in to Download mode.
Tried a couple of different PC's and cables but assuming as kernal flashing works, that isnt the issue.

While you do that download another ROM, maybe the ones you got are corrupted.

Install syiah kernel and try to get into recovery. Then use wiperom script or go to mount and format everything (/data, /system etc). Then go to download mode and flash a system.
First thing check if syiah kernel is compatible whit your phone.
