Hi, Im new here.. so hello to everyone...
Ok I have an unbranded open S2 GT-i9100. Firstly I wanted to know what phone i have from the baseband version and build. see below.
Baseband: I9100XXLQ6
Build: IMM76D.XWLPT
Secondly i want to put Biftor v8 on there. Fed up waiting for samsung to realease on kies.
How do i go about it? do i need a kernal to match my build and do i have to root before installing Biftor or can it all be done at once?
Any details would be great. thanks.
Root it, wipe it and flash it. If you want to know how: feel free to search and read on xda Guides aren't there to ignore you know.
Thanks I appreciate the fast reply. However my question wasnt really answered. I am happy to root, wipe and flash it but my main consern is what kernel i need to root it. Do i need a kernel that matches my current version.
If so is my version XXLQ6 or XWLPT
Thanks...
If ur gonna flash a CF kernel to root, look up the kernel version in ur About Phone page. The baseband version is not relevant here.

If you want to root it,follow along.Download this file, and put it on your phone`s EXTERNAL SD! card. Now reboot into Recovery. In recovery, select "Install update from external storage", or something similar, and search the downloaded file.Install it.Now reboot. You don't have to wipe anything. That's it!

Hi again, so I did some searches. Apoologies for not being thorough first time round. And i discovered how to root. and i also discovered im in a prime position to hard brick. insane chip and 4.0.4.
so i think i need to change my kernel to siyah kernel or similar. Will i then be safe to install biftor etc? if so do i wipe cache etc when i install biftor. Will moving to siyah kernel remove risk of hard brick when restoring / wiping.
thanks
Siyah v5 or Mobile Odin for stock ROMs.

Yes, flash a custom kernel first, that matches your android version (4.0.4 -> Siyah v5 for example).
Then you'll be safe to flash custom firmware. Follow the instructions on the first page of Biftor's thread, then you'll know all you need to know

How could i do this?
I need the stock rom and something else??? or i need only need to flash stock rom....
Thanks buddiez!
Easy Go to here
Download the stock firmware for your region from sammobile.com (or any stock firmware, really) and flash it via Odin.

If noobs on xda have taught me one thing, its that smartphones just aren't for everyone.
I should download firmware (Greece (Cosmote) 2012 August 4.0.4 I9100BOLPM I9100COSLP9 Download)
and i ll go in download mode, connect it via odin and put into PDA box and start flash???? and thats all?? or i ll brick my phone?
Well if thats where you are from then yes that should be it.

i read somewhere in forum, that if i have siyah kernel and if i try to flash with stock kernel, it will break.... its true or not?? and thanks for FAST reply!

No. It won't brick as long as you don't wipe data while on a firmware affected by the bug. Just try to avoid using stock 4.0.4 firmware to steer clear of the emmc brickbug. For more info on that look in the general section.

My steps to get it in stock place is to flash it only with stock rom????

Ok easy now. If you want to go back to stock firmware just use your current siyah kernel to wipe data and cache Aka factory reset. When you have done that just use odin to flash the firmware You should not brick your phone

Re: [Q] how to Root i9100 without flashing
Wt do you want actually? ?
Updated or root??
Pm me.
sorry for my bad english.
From what I understand you want to root the phone backup your apps and their data then update to 4.1.2.
If that is correct the easiest way is to flash a kernel like Siyah to get root use a backup app from the play store like gobackup that can backup the apps
and data then flash the update to JB, if you flash the stock ROM you will have to root again so you can restore you data since root is required for that.
It is best to only restore user apps and there data since the system apps will be upgraded

Sorry, but I didn´t find th PM !!!
My phone had 2.3.6 and with Kies I installed 4.0.1 and 4.0.4, but always after each installation I make a master reset, now have pass a long time using it and I have a lot of config that I don´t like to loose. My English it´s no good as well ...
So, I want to make root and use MyBackup PRO to save all the setting.
Then just flash a kernel that is rooted that workes on ics and make a backup but you will have to root again after the upgrade to restore your backup

I recently bought an S 2 after losing my rooted Optimus One. I downloaded a lot of apps and games, now I have tremendous battery drain. It switches off with 2g network on in 6 hours. I found a topic in this forum about gemini app manager. But it needs root. Then I found CF-root. It says it's a kernel. If I use ODIN to flash it, will it format my system? Also, am unable to decide which version of it I should download. This is my about phone

Flashing a kernel will not format ur system.
You can read the instructions given in the CF kernel thread on how to select the correct version.
Since ur on 4.0.4, I suggest you read about eMMC Brickbug issue on 4.0.4.
Check it with the 'Got Brickbug?' app on XDA.
So, to be safe, its better to avoid CF Root kernels. Use Siyah kernel instead.
Since you are new here, I have asked the mods to move ur thread to the correct section. This is the general section. Questions should be posted in the Q & A Section.

Hi buddy.
Use siyah kernel and just flash it via odin.
Just go to www.gokhanmoral.com and search for an appropriate kernel starting with version no. 5.x
Download it, enable usb debugging on ur phone, reboot into download mode and flash via odin.
This is the most efficient and easy way to gain root access on ur phone.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. I actually lurked moar and found an old thread which just had busybot and cwm, I flashed it and got root. I tried some jelly bean roms but the battery drain was pretty bad, especially PA 3.15. So I checked for a stable cm rom and found cm9. I used it for a day now and the battery is amazing.
I now have another problem, though. Can't make native video calls. Found out all cm and aosp based roms have this problem. Does the roms based on stock rom have this feature?
Thanks.
Having never used any cusROMs other than CM builds, I can't say for sure.......but,
There are parts of a Samsung Firmware that are 'closed source'...in other words...illegal to replicate, copy or duplicate in any way.....
I believe that video calling as well as fm radio and one or two other parts fall into this category.......

^This suggestion sounds tempting and I want to do it.
But, you guys confused me a bit, it's not safe to do a 4.0.4. downgrade after I installed JB?
I'm not interested in backing up apps or things like that, just the pure ROM itself so I can return to 4.0.4. if I don't like JB for some reason, but if it ain't safe I ain't gonna do it. :cyclops:
Also Titanium Backup is for app/contacts backup not the ROM itself right?
4.0.4 has been known to brick a few S2's due to a faulty emmc chip. If you have this faulty chip and you perform a data wipe; you could brick your phone beyond recovery......
And yes, Titanium Backup is for apps and data not the OS. Restoring the OS is done with a nandroid backup in cwm recovery

Unfortuntely I have messed up my UK Galaxy S2 I91000G.
Id successfully rooted using this method and installed Neat ROM.
Happily used this for a while and then decided to play and installed Blazing kernal
The problems then started. It simply booted to the Samsung S2 screen and hung. I couldnt get in to Recovery mode.
Got it in to to Download mode and despite trying methods here Im not getting much luck. I can flash a kernal using Odin. Tried official ones and CWM and they install fine. The phone reboots and I get to the Galaxy S2 screen with the yellow warning triangle.
However whenever I try and flash a ROM it fails. Tried official ones from the fixit thread plus others. All the same outcome.
Is there a bootloader I can try or anything else I can do before I trash it?! Any help much appreciated.
So....flashing a kernel is a pass and flashing a ROM is a fail?
That's a new one.

Oh. Thats not good news!
That does seem to be whats happening:
Flash a kernal - Pass and phone reboots and I get the S2 screen with warning triangle.
Flash a ROM - Fails and back to "Firmware upgrade encountered a problem. Connect phone to Kies."
Flash a kernal again and back to S2 screen.
Any ideas?
