[Q] how to Root i9100 without flashing - SOLVED - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, for a while I'm searching in the site before ask anything. I have a i9100
android: 4.0.4
i9100XXLQ6
Kernel 3.0.15-I9100XWLPT-CL941023
compilation: IMM76D.XWLPT
I want root my phone without flashing, because I want to backup all the data and config from application before install 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. The past two weeks I read all the doc that I found, but there's nothing clear, at least, no clear for me, I have no knowledge about the process and initials you use here.
Please if anyone can post me the dummy guide, I'll appreciate. Thanks !!!!

Re: [Q] how to Root i9100 without flashing
Wt do you want actually? ?
Updated or root??
Pm me.
sorry for my bad english.

From what I understand you want to root the phone backup your apps and their data then update to 4.1.2.
If that is correct the easiest way is to flash a kernel like Siyah to get root use a backup app from the play store like gobackup that can backup the apps
and data then flash the update to JB, if you flash the stock ROM you will have to root again so you can restore you data since root is required for that.
It is best to only restore user apps and there data since the system apps will be upgraded

Sorry, but I didn´t find th PM !!!
My phone had 2.3.6 and with Kies I installed 4.0.1 and 4.0.4, but always after each installation I make a master reset, now have pass a long time using it and I have a lot of config that I don´t like to loose. My English it´s no good as well ...
So, I want to make root and use MyBackup PRO to save all the setting.

Then just flash a kernel that is rooted that workes on ics and make a backup but you will have to root again after the upgrade to restore your backup

I like the other idea you give me, the problem it´s that I didn´t know anything about, you say "flash a kernel like Siyah" what is the meaning of that, reinstall with other room called Siyah ? I don't like reinstall, just using mine make root and save my config. Forgive me I that isn't what you say.

It's way better to read and learn a lot first. The fact you don't understand anything from the answers says enough: it's dangerous for you flash or root your phone as you will obviously do something wrong. No offense.

Is rooting this much easy?

I came across this thread which hints at rooting in a very simple and in few seconds...My question is that if it is this much easy then why it has been made so complicated in other ways??? Is it really working??? Is there any drawbacks in this type of rooting??? should I go for this way of rooting???

First of all thanks a lot for the reply..Sorry for the mistake I made to post it here..I was thinking that it is Q & A forum because I opened several tabs at a time.
The reason I made a separate thread was that I wanted other people also to comment not just those people who replied to that thread...Because I didn't see any expert member to comment on that thread.
Sorry if I am wrong...I am noob to android phone...Before I was using windows phone.
Rooting or flashing is easy as long as you can read, interpret and understand. If you can't, well that is where the "complications" come in.

BTW the only reason for me to root was to get rid of Samsung blotware.
If you are new to this (I'am) don't delete apps ... freeze using Titanium Pro and PLS read this list before you freeze anything:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en_US&hl=en_US&key=0Ag43oj7rLQP4dENZcmhGN0ZUa3pHSENVeXlqUm5vV0E&single=true&gid=0&output=html
I don't know if this method is really an exploit or just a consequence of the Android platform being a development platform open to anyone with a PC and an USB cable to install things...
But the problem with real exploits is that they can be fixed on future versions and be device/manufacturer specific. While installing modified kernels is a feature available for most devices at the cost of the warranty (sometimes).

[Q] Custom Firmware Install

Hi, Im new here.. so hello to everyone...
Ok I have an unbranded open S2 GT-i9100. Firstly I wanted to know what phone i have from the baseband version and build. see below.
Baseband: I9100XXLQ6
Build: IMM76D.XWLPT
Secondly i want to put Biftor v8 on there. Fed up waiting for samsung to realease on kies.
How do i go about it? do i need a kernal to match my build and do i have to root before installing Biftor or can it all be done at once?
Any details would be great. thanks.
Root it, wipe it and flash it. If you want to know how: feel free to search and read on xda Guides aren't there to ignore you know.
Thanks I appreciate the fast reply. However my question wasnt really answered. I am happy to root, wipe and flash it but my main consern is what kernel i need to root it. Do i need a kernel that matches my current version.
If so is my version XXLQ6 or XWLPT
Thanks...
If ur gonna flash a CF kernel to root, look up the kernel version in ur About Phone page. The baseband version is not relevant here.

If you want to root it,follow along.Download this file,and put it on your phone`s EXTERNAL SD! card.Now reboot into Recovery.In recovery,select "Install update from external storage", or something similar,and search the downloaded file.Install it.Now reboot.You don't have to wipe anything.That's it!

Hi again, so I did some searches. Apoologies for not being thorough first time round. And i discovered how to root. and i also discovered im in a prime position to hard brick. insane chip and 4.0.4.
so i think i need to change my kernel to siyah kernel or similar. Will i then be safe to install biftor etc? if so do i wipe cache etc when i install biftor. Will moving to siyah kernel remove risk of hard brick when restoring / wiping.
thanks
Siyah v5 or Mobile Odin for stock ROMs.

Yes, flash a custom kernel first, that matches your android version (4.0.4 -> Siyah v5 for example).
Then you'll be safe to flash custom firmware. Follow the instructions on the first page of Biftor's thread, then you'll know all you need to know

i'm on the same rom with 130 apps installed and no such problem yet. there might be any app conflicting with the default phone app? do you remember exactly after which app installation the problem started?
Tip 1...Make sure you untick "system" in filters if you're using titanium to restore.
Tip 2... inclusive with above, also do "restore missing apps with data" and untick everything. Restore "app + data" ONLY for apps that have important data.
Tip 3... do a second "restore missing apps with data" and restore "app only" for apps that dont need data restored

I think the problem is that the ROM cosiders Phone app as a notification app . because when i recieve a call it apears on notifications mini special screen and not full screen !

See above post regarding restoring.
If its fine before you restore, its something you're restoring causing it.

For your xperia p, since you have all these problems i suggest you flash stock rom and you will be fine.
I just found this method for rooting via flashtool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqZ4AnHhzaI . Give it a try if you want.
Are u on ics or jb? Ics u should be fine but jb use doomlord root in xperia p dev forum.

Can't you attach the image, your service won't let see the image to anyone that is not signed in.
If you cannpt attach use service like tinypic.com.
It would be very helpful if you added some information like what is your firmware version and which method you have used.

You should ask the OP of that thread, it is very unclear what is needed to every phone and firmware.
I am quite sure that if you chose the other method that I have used you'd be rooted a long time ago.

O.K - i restored the device from the Pc companion and it did resolved the problem !!
I will need some bravery to try doing that again...
If anyone know for sure which number i should pick in the "Bin4ry Root MANY ANDROID" tool - it could be great!

2) New Xperia Root (Z, U ... JellyBean)
3) Old.
4) Old-Special
Thank you all for that you gave from you own time helping me out to resolve it.

Rooting a S2 on 2.3.5 without wiping/losing data

Hey,
I'm looking for the best way to root my Samsung S2 phone without wiping it so that I can use TitaniumBackup and create backups of certain files/apps...etc
I've found the following thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 but I can't work out if it's correct for me it does mention "K**"

Hmm, I can't find any instructional thread for it, I did find the following file in the CF-Root post: CF-Root-SGS2_XW_NEE_KI8-v4.3-CWM4.zip which is XW_NEE_KI8: 2.3.5, CF-Root v4.3, SU 3.0.2, "insecure" it looks like it's for my ROM on my phone but not sure :S
Have you used odin before?
You just stick that file I said in PDA and hit start.

Best part of using Framaroot is that you dun even need a pc as its an apk. I also use TB to remove and freeze bloatwares, those that keeps running in the background, eating up ram, data and battery.
.......and the best part of using odin methods is that odin/phone are setup to bail you out if something goes wrong.
So just pick one and do it, and cydia impactor is a 4th way......lol

Ahaha, another way I don't understand why if one ways been found why people look for other ways?
I just tried to use ODIN and CF-Root but it does nothing, I'm in download mode and ODIN says:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Yet it's still stuck on the bootloader (download mode) and doesn't reboot or anything
