My Note has seen better days. For the past six months or so, the USB port has been broken and the only way I can keep phone charged is through my two batteries in the external battery charger. A couple days ago, the SIM card slot stopped working. In order to get cell service, I have to restart my phone around 15 times (putting the SIM in and out, taking battery in and out) and hope it works. By that point, I've usually lost 30% of my battery and a couple hours without a working phone.
Now, someone in my family has an upgrade available and offered it to me because they are happy with their iPhone 5. Do you think I should just get a whole new phone or go to a repair shop and stick it out another 10 months until my upgrade? At the repair I'd need to fix both charging port and SIM slot, so it won't be cheap. On the flip side, I'm not very excited about the offerings on AT&T right now. The GNote 2, though a great phone, will be obsolete in September with the GNote 3. The Optimus G Pro has had some good reviews but I've read about poor battery life and horrible OEM support (in regards to releasing kernels, source, etc). The GS4 is 5 inches, and the GNote is 5.2; I don't want to go down in size. I'd like to keep the 5+ inch form factor.
What do you guys think?
I wouldn't waste an upgrade on the note 2 right now. I'd search craigslist for a good deal if I were you. If you were me you'd buy a new SIM port, and usb jack online and install it yourself. It's really not that complicated.
Just get the Note 2 if you can't stick it out. Sounds like its really inconvenient for you with those problems. I was gonna recommend the S4 because its atleast 5 inches and the dev support it has and will continue to have throughout. I believe Frys electronics is having a deal for $149.99 for the S4 on AT&T currently.
EDIT: honestly ever since the official Jb was released, I feel like I can keep my phone till the Note 3. If you can fix the usb port on your own,I recommend in doing so and not settle for the note 2 or the others mentioned above. I was really close to getting the HTC One today but decided that my Note still works perfectly fine even though the front speakers we're very tempting.

Note 2 on Craigslist for under $250 worth it? My upgrade is in March 2014. I can spend some money at a repair shop or just go out and get the Note 2. What do you guys think?
EDIT: You're right. I'll wait for the Note 3 and just go to the repair shop. I hope it has the Snapdragon 800.

I'm planning on selling my DNA (with a Nokia wireless charger) and Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet around the time the Note 3 is released. The Note 3 will essentially be a faster, higher resolution, and more portable (albeit smaller) version of the Note 10.1, which I love. I also have a DNA, which is the main reason I'm here.
My DNA has a few small scratches at the top of the screen over the verizon logo (not part of the actual screen) and a very small knick on the bottom left edge of phone which isn't very noticeable at all. I don't have any pictures of my phone to show, but you can trust that my description is accurate as I'm trying to accurately gauge what I can get out of the phone money-wise. Other than what's previously mentioned, the phone is in perfect condition. Runs well, very smooth, etc etc. Assuming I maintain the phone until September/October, how much can I expect to get out of it? I've seen listings on Ebay for around $325-$400 used, and I expect I can get just a little bit more by including the charger.
I'm curious to know if time was anything to do with the resale value. Will I be able to get the same $325-$400 out of it if I keep using it for about 4 months longer? I've had it since Christmas, so I'd have been using it for about 9 months. I assume the value would drop a little bit, but I'm not sure how much.
Thanks in advance for the help, I appreciate it!
I'm sure with the introduction of new devices like Galaxy s4 an HTC One or the Note 3 will most definitely lower your resale value on your device to the low end of things.
Its pretty much how it works with electronics they get obsolete really quick.

I also look at these things. I've been doing it for 6 years. I try to buy and sell during the smallest drop where the phone is still relevant. I find that to be buying at 400-450 and selling at 250-300. Usually i buy around 4-6 months after a phone comes out and sell it after owning for just less than a year. The DNA dropped in price quick. I was able to grab it just after 3 months for $375, i expect to see $300 around August when i will probably get the S4.
with that said, Verizon and sprint lose value much quicker because of the lack of true GSM, though sprint is worse by far. I am predicting this phone to be around 325 come august and 275 by christmas. then it will stabilize at 200-250 for another year. We are in the quick downfall period for the phone. Also Brands matter. I've found Samsung galaxy to be the best retainer followed by HTC, then Moto and LG.
here's how it usually flows.
A typical new phone that retails for $650
First 3 months Loss of < 150(500)
Next 3 months Loss of <100 (400)
next 3 months loss of <75 (325)
next 3 months loss of <75(250)
next 12 months loss of <50 (200)
I'll second the $300 estimate for late summer. It's a decent time to sell as the pre Christmas phones haven't been announced yet. Once that happens the value will go into the $hitter.

The Note 2 is retailing around $700 online at Verizon right now, so I think it'd be safe to assume the Note 3 will be around $750-$800 when it's first released? And how long would it be until I could probably buy a Note 3 off amazon or ebay at a slightly lower price? Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate it.

The Note2 price on Verizon did not hold up very well. I think the big size eventually turns off users who really were not expecting that which creates a larger than average resale market. When i bought my DNA back in March, there were NOTE2 going straight up for trades with the DNA which you could easily have gotten for $375-$400. Both devices came out in November but the Note 2 retailed much higer at $700. That's a $300 drop in 4 months. If i was in the market for a Note, i'd wait 4 months. It dropped about a hundred a month those 1st 4 months and since has stabilized and even gone up a little.

Sam's Club was giving away Note II's on Verizon as early as January. I could see the Note III being the same.
There are a lot of exciting and new phones/tablets coming out soon. Android 4.3 is out, the Galaxy Note III is around the corner, there is a new Nexus 7, Moto X is coming, etc. Are you tempted to buy any of these devices?
How long are you planning to keep your Samsung Galaxy Note before upgrading to another phone or simply not using it anymore?
I'll probraly get the note 4 , heh

lol ive already went through one and am on my second. the first went into a lake, bounced off concrete, and just finally the screen went out on me 2 months ago. i had all these accessories so i figured id just get another. then when this one dies i'll get something different.
Really you must be bored ........

I am done with contract phones. I like my note and as long as it functions normally I see no reason to upgrade it. I have 4 phones on my plan and the last contract ends in September. After that I'm going to try straight talk or TMobile. Of my 4 phones, I have 1400 minutes, two data plans, nation wide, unlimited texting and I get a 25% discount through my job and I'm still paying $200 a month. If I switched to ST or TM, I can get 4 phones with full data....etc for the same price. Granted you don't get 4G LTE, but I really wouldn't miss that HSPA+ and 3G is good enough for me.
When one of my phones dies, I'll gladly search Craigslist and buy something to replace it used...
I just finally dumped my ATT Uverse...... ATT sucks
Just until i can get a deal on either Note 3 or Mega. Whichever is bigger and i can get refurb deal on. Last purchase i got 2 S3's and Note for $100

Currently there is not a phone on the market that I would take over my Note. As for the up and coming devices pretty much all we have are unfounded rumors. I am looking forward to the Note 3 release and if it has the size and features that I want I imagine that it will be my next upgrade. But there again I'll be waiting to find out exactly what these new phones have in them before I do anything. :fingers-crossed:

I'll probably pick up a clean used Note 2 this fall once the 3 comes out, primarily for battery life. I also want to get the TMobile version this time. I've been spending a lot of time in Milwaukee and my TMO S2 just does better than the Note. I might even ditch my 7.0+ when I get the new phone.
Note 3 or Moto X for me. I'm hoping a dev of my old phone will move to Moto X when it releases and if he does then I'm sold.

Love my Note may get the Note 3 or Mega whichever they are gonna call it. But I will always keep my OG Note until it dies on me.
I'm sticking with my Note i717 until Note 3 is out AND has good Cyanogenmod support. Can't stand using non-AOSP ROMs. I will never buy a device without a wacom stylus again, the Note has proven it to be a great feature. I like the 5+ inch screen size as well. I wish Note 3 went back to 16:10 (maybe 1920x1200) but I'll probably still get it regardless as long as there's a T-Mobile supported version I can get off contract, and preferably with a Qualcomm SoC because Exynos sucks for open source ROMs it seems.

I live between Milwaukee and Chicago. Try flashing the TMO UVLG3 modem. I've had the best results with that.
As long as devs port the newest Android OS to the Note, I will most likely stick with it. I don't like the physical Home button, on newer Galaxy S# and Note# phones. Maybe the Galaxy Mega or HTC One Max (if it has an SD card slot).
For FOREVER. If it will last that long c: I'd say at most . . . two years. I just ordered my Note a few days ago off of eBay and I'm patiently waiting for it to arrive. I'm leaving my Pantech Burst behind (I'm gonna miss it), but this phone will be an upgrade. I can't wait to see what it can do
Will be upgrading in Sept.

I'm patiently waiting for the Note 3. I just recently purchased the AT&T S4's for my wife and two sons and they are great devices, yet I love the larger screen on the Note. I've had the Note since it came out and waited on it for about 4-6 months prior to release after reading about it. Since purchase I have many cases, battery wall charger and 3 batteries (which in always carry 1 extra in pocket). If the Note came in a 6 inch screen like the Mega I'd love it, but the Mega's specs aren't very appealing to me. With the rumors mentioned about the Note 3 seems like I won't get 6 inch, more like 5.7 following the .2 increase from Note 1-2. Now regarding network I would NEVER go to anything less than LTE again after being spoiled with these blazing speeds of 60 mbps + . The service is sometimes almost 2x my home network speed (30 mbps Charter) and almost 5x the speed of regular U-Verse speed (10-12mbps if they are lucky). If been using JellyBean Sandwich Rom which has kicked every other ROMs butt (in my opinion) regarding stability, battery life and sheer performance and kept me satisfied with my Note 1. Hopefully we will see more about Note 3 soon.
My son is getting great battery life on his Note 2 even not rooted. I may go with the N2 or maybe the Note 3 if Samsung doesn't run it with the new Tizen operating system. I have been eagerly awaiting the N3 ...but fear they will ruin it.
Hey guys, I'm currently a galaxy nexus owner, have been since the day they released it almost 2 years ago. I'm elliglible to upgrade (verizon) in august, and i'm looking very heavily at the galaxy note 2. I've wanted this phone for a long time, and I would like to know if you would suggest someone to buy this phone right now, now it's about a year and a half old, or however old it is. Does it still oooh and aaah the way it did when it first came out? Usually I don't buy phones that old, but this phone just seems like it is still cutting edge. I was wanting to hear from you guys before I made my decision. Should I go with note 2 or hold out for the note 3? Do you think the note3 coming out will drop the price of hte note 2?
If you're holding on to your unlimited data, then buy the note 2 after 3 comes out, that'll knock down the price by some. If you're going to use the upgrade then wait for the3, which will be even more awesome. IMHO

Been debating on this for a while, and think I'm going to pick up something new this week if I decide to grab a new phone.
Phone will be on Verizon.
I'll be using this 90% of the time in the PAC NW area of the country. other 10% will be divided up between DC/South US/Hawaii/INTL.
I've been checking spec comparisons between them and a few other phones on multiple sites, but wanted to see if any of you had a first hand opinion between these choices.
Right now I'm looking at the Moto X (32GB) , LG G2, HTC ONE, and Galaxy S4, was thinking about getting the Nexus 5 and jumping carriers, but I really can't see any benefit to it that the other phones don't have aside from vanilla android.
i.e. this link to phonescoop comparing the Rezound, Moto X, HTC One, HTC One Max, and Nexus 5
phonescoop link
and this one on phone arena comparing the Moto X, Rezound, and G2
phone arena link
and another one from phone arena comparing the Moto X, Rezound, and HTC One.
phone arena link 2
one more from phone arena comparing the Moto X, LG G2, and Galaxy S4
yet another phone arena link
and my last comparison, the Rezound vs Moto X, S4, One, G2
last link I swear!
My biggest pros for any of the newer ones are the scratch resistant screen, more LTE bands & more GSM bands for when I travel.
As well as NFC would be fun to mess around with, as well as the faster cpu / gpu / more ram. Granted I can't think of anything the rezound hasn't been able to run aside from GTA-VC which is only second hand to me as I haven't tried it.
moto x specific pros-
S-GPS
EDR for bluetooth
only $100 for 32GB version
moto maker if i want it in crazy colors
lg g2 specific pros-
fastest cpu / fasted gpu
quadcore cpu
biggest battery
biggest screen
faster ram
htc onc specific pros-
love the look, and like the built in stereo speakers
samsung galaxy s4 specific pros-
quadcore cpu
highest PPI on screen
faster ram
My cons are for the most of the newer ones are
non-removable battery
no SD card slot.
What I'm asking after all of that rambling is first hand comparisons between the rezounds and these devices, or these devices compared amongst each other.
aka- Sway me one way or the other.
TL;DR - have rezound, debating on Moto X / LG G2 / HTC ONE / Galaxy S4. Any first hand experiences to compare them?
Thanks!
I have the HTC one and I can tell u it's GREAT. I didn't think any phones were worth upgrading from the rezound this year but when my phone cracked 3 weeks ago I had to get a new one. I went threw the same comparisons but instead of nexus 5 it was note 3. I knew the specs of the note 3 were the best of them all but I really don't like touchwiz so that was out of the question and the s4. Then I saw the moto x but it was still $199 at Verizon and $99 on every other carrier plus no moto maker so that was out of the question. Then it was the one vs g2. I used both at a Verizon store and well the G2 was nice the one and it's metal build were just so much nicer. Also the speakers were a great add on and I wasn't really feeling the button on the back of the G2. Also the one has the highest ppi of all the phones not the s4. Either phone is a great choice but I can tell u I get 3.5-4 hours screen on time easy with auto brightness on the one and about a day and a half usage moderate. Also I have experienced no lag whatsoever on the one

^^^ I second this...
Any of them would be step up, you wouldn't be disappointed at all, but the LG G2 is a beast (3000mah battery) if you are stuck with Verizon for whatever reason, but if you can jump ship the Nexus 5 on a pre-paid GSM carrier is the way to go, for an unlimited talk/text plan with 2-3Gb data it will run you $45-$60/month... saving about $40-$55 monthly over a standard VZW plan easily paying for the phone in 6-9 months.
I've been thinking about getting a new phone for the past few months as well...I got myself dead set on the One and went to the store to just mess around with it for a bit and pretend like I owned it. Super smooth/fast, beautiful screen, cool speakers...hate the UI. The more I tried to do basic tasks the less I liked it. The two buttons didn't help either. Basically, I recommend going into a store and just pretending like the phones are yours. Specs and reviews and videos and what everyone else thinks doesn't really matter in the end, the phone has work with you.
I'm sure with some new roms etc I could find a way to be happy with the One...but I need some time to get over my frustrations first good luck!

I was holding out hope that the Nexus 5 would some how come to VZW. While I was waiting, my wife picked out the G2. I put Scott Scrosler's Clean ROM and she really enjoys this phone. I've been playing with it and waiting for the Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals. I found a way to get the G2 for free. This phone is great and there's a lot of dev support. If you have to stick with VZW and the price of all the phones is the same, I recommend the G2.

I have had the one for a little over a month. Will say its a good phone with good battery life. Sure there is the possible purple tent issue but nor all of them has this problem. Best to check the camera out by covering the lens with your hand and see if you get the purple tent. Rooting is easy and as always some great ROMs already out there. The all aluminium body is a real plus for this phone.
I tried the camera on the moto line of phones and the picture just turned out grainy and bad. Even with the one purple tent in low light settings its still takes a great pic just like the s4 does. Think HTC finally got sense under control as its not laggy and doesn't seem as a battery drain like older versions of sense was. In the end people likes different things and you will never know till you use it. Nice thing Verizon has the 14 day return policies. Good luck in your choice.

*WALL OF TEXT INCOMING* (just a friendly warning)
I ended up ordering the LG G2 (staying with verizon) from bestbuy.
last sunday, (the 17th) I noticed that bestbuy had all of the lg g2s marked down to 100$ and had a 50$ gift card, so I checked it out on the best buy website, and saw that you had to bring in a working smartphone to trade in to get it at that price, but if you ordered online, it took the 50$ off instantly.
While looking on the Bestbuy website at the LG G2s, for some reason, even though every other carriers version was $99.99, the verizon one was listed at $49.99.
I ordered it online, thinking they would kick the order out and that it was an errror or something.
I figured $50 for the phone and a $50 bestbuy giftcard, probably an error or an early black friday price mistake.
They sent an email the next day saying there was an urgent problem with the order and call within 48 hrs or it would be cancelled, I called and the rep couldnt figure out why it sent me that email, and after being on hold for about 30 minutes came back and said they called shipping and had them force the order though.
They also said they spoke to verizon and had it activated, I didn't think anything of it at the time and just said thanks.
After the call, i put the phone down and a few minutes later went to call my wife, but when I hit send, it rang and then said "this phone is not registered with verizon" or something to that effect, then I remembered the rep said they activated the new phone. FACEPALM time.
I tried a few other numbers, same error message. tried 611, it rang! went through 3 reps telling them exactly what I thought happened (the bestbuy person got confused and got someone from vzw to activate a new phone on my line w/o a new imei or new sim somehow). 3rd rep i spoke with said that was exactly what happened. took about 10-15 minutes but reset everything back to my original imei/sim (the htc rezound). so now i can make calls again.
2 days later got a shipment notification email.
of note- I noticed monday morning when I logged into bestbuys website to check the order status (this is before receiving the problem email) to see if it shipped yet, and the price was up to $99.99 for all carriers including verizon, and now had an extra line on the page- it's 150 at the store, and when you bring in a smartphone to trade in, you get a 50$ gift card that you then HAVE to use in the transaction to get the price down to $99.99. online orders still took the price to $99.99 immediately.
Been checking today since it's supposed to arrive today, and it looks like it's back up to 199.99 and they are still doing the gift card, but you have to trade in a smartphone and use the giftcard on the spot to get it down to 150.
tl:dr-
50$ for the G2, free shipping (but slowwwwwww, totally should have paid the 10$ to get it in 2 days if i knew it was going to take 7 days) and 50$ best buy gift card.
and i finally got the email an hour ago for the 50$ bestbuy egiftcard.
of note, they pricematch, so I'm hoping someone lowers it to $.01 for black friday and then I can go get my $50 back and have it for free!
chose the g2 since it was marked down so low and has the faster CPU/GPU, even though i won't be able to change the battery (but it does have the biggest stock battery at 3000ma, which is awesome since my std rezound battery only lasts a few hours and the extended battery doesn't even last a day anymore)
Thanks for the advice everyone!
after a week with the G2, i've got to say it's amazing. I still have the rezound and will start tinkering with it since i finally have another device, but the G2 is insanely fast at everything so far. love it. can't recommend it enough.
I've been on a Droid 4 for a couple of years (due to the keyboard) and am finally ready to go to the Note series for the big screen and let go of the keyboard.
I'm on Verizon with UDP out of contract, so I can't buy the Note 4 that's coming out next month from them without losing my unlimited data. Sprint wants $381 after tax for the Note 4 with new 2 year contract and the monthly fee would be a bit more than I'm paying now.
The reason I'm posting in this forum is I'm looking for advice from Note 2 users. I found a guy in my area selling an unopened/unused Verizon Note 2 refurb with a spare battery for $185. I've seen the stat differences on youtube videos, etc so I know the Note 2 obviously isn't quite as much of a powerhouse and slightly smaller screen, but do you like your Note 2? Would you take this deal?
Thanks.

Questions you need to answer for yourself. To my knowledge, The Note 2 is a fully unlocked phone and bootloader prior to the 4.4+ updates. So with that said, the problem with a Refurb phone is the fact it could be looked down with the newer software, but you can still root just no unloacked bootloader (Custom roms but no kernels). If its a 4.1 version that's even better as you can fully unlock everything with the simple guides posted here. Do you want just a rooted phone if that's the case? I will keep my note 2 until it dies, since its the last fully unlocked phone, pretty good support still left, so plenty for rom options, the battery life to me is great about a 24hr+ on charge, about 5hrs on screen. Phone seems to handle all games pretty well, it to me doesn't get bogged down and laggy (well thats just me). To me its a great deal, but I am like you, trapped in a unlimited plan so I buy phones w/o contract. Maybe check out ebay, you might be able to snipe a phone cheaper or even better a phone prior to 4.4 updates allowing a fully unlockable phone.
And never due a monthly phone plan, you get raped. End up paying wayyyyy extra than normally, be careful
