Fuzzy distorted call quality / defective top speaker... Help - T-Mobile HTC One (M7)

I noticed the other day that when the volume on my phone calls exceeds about 2 thirds up the callers voice gets fuzzy / slightly distorted like a radio turned up to loud. I'm hoping this isn't symptomatic of a blown speaker. Can someone else test this to tell me if this is normal? My other phone is a blackberry z10 and it does not display this symptom so I'm fairly certain it's not a network issue. To test call an automated number I.e. a bank or credit card and turn the volume up incrementally. Again this is not in speaker mode (or less / barely noticeable do to the fact the bottom speaker also turns on and drowns out the top speaker). Just need to know if this is normal or I should exchange for a new one prior to my 2 week exchange window to not receive a refurb. Thanks a lot,
Andrew

Turned it all the way up and called my work voicemail. No distortion at all. I'd check to make sure that you have a decent signal first. If so, swap it for a new one

Thanks for checking... It seemed to get a little worse today so I'm going to call tmo tomorrow and try and have a replacement shipped out because they have no stock left at my local tmobile.

[Q] I have serious Call speaker problem with my S2...Help

Hi:
I just got my galaxy s2 today. The only and important problem i found so far is the Speaker ( the one we use for calling not music). I keep hearing the electric noise when i make phone calls. the noise disappear if i use the earphone. So, I am sure that something is wrong with the Speaker........
love this phone so much.
Can somebody help?
Thanks a lot!!!
Return the phone for a refund or exchange, the earpiece speaker is broken.
where was this phone purchased?
I bought it from clove
When I turn the volume down a bit the problem is gone.
It only happens when I turn the volume to max or one step from max.
Is that still mean there is a problem with my s2?
Thanks.

Does anybody know how to solve this?
this problem is still there no matter what.
Thanks.
Might be a dumb question but whatever.
Are you connected to edge/2g? Are you next to a computer/wifi router?

NO I am having 3g or H+ from rogers, Canada.
it mast be something to do with the speaker because If i use the earphone the problem is gone.
is it possible that rooting caused it?
root did not cause it, the issue was probably always there. i really wish more people would reply saying if they do or do not have the issue as well, so we know if its common to all SGS2 units, or you just have a specific defect.
As per request..
No I don't have this problem and have used the speakerphone several times.
No problem with my earpiece speaker or my speakerphone
Not here but I do get the headset issue...though that's another thread..

awesome, there are some data points. max volume doesnt seem to crackle everyone's speaker, so maybe a bad batch is going around.
My SGS2 ear-peace crackles on max volume pretty badly - sounds like something is rattling inside. If I put it one or two notches below max, the crackling stops.
I also purchased from clove and live in Canada.
I had this issue with a nokia years back. I ordered and replaced the speaker and the problem was solved. It could just be that it was not glued-snapped down properly and this causes it to vibrate. real crackling is caused by a distorted diaphragm in the speaker.
Anywho, I also was wondering if anyone else has this problem.

I'm afraid to say I noticed this on my phone today. Turned it down a couple of notches & the crackle could no longer be heard. Far from ideal. Will have to check with clove on next steps, and samsung australia on repair cost if done locally.
Yup same problem here. The local samsung service centre technician says there's nothing wrong with the speaker, I guess he's just lazy to look into it.
I'll send it in again to another samsung service centre to have another look.
no problem with my speakers, but sometimes the earpiece sound does seem too low when receiving calls even if i have it on max volume settings
Have the same problem... Like the earspeaker is distorting and vibrating. It starts just when I call somebody, when ringing.... Tomorrow I will take it to hospital
ok I got back my phone from Samsung Service Centre, after a second persuasion they changed the front panel (whole LCD including the front speaker, not sure if the back speaker too, I don't know the structure of the phone).
And now, it's solved!! NO MORE BUZZING when making/receiving calls!
Definitely go ask for an exchange or a change of your panel guys! It's a HARDWARE ISSUE.

Variable volume in calls

Does anyone else's volume go up and down in a call? And no, I'm not hitting the volume button at all...lol
Yes, mine does this. It's annoying. Still love my 3d.
Same here. Luckily, using the phone for actual calls is the least thing I do.
Indeed.. drives me crazy

Same here. Every time I call someone the ring is half-quiet, half-loud. Like someone is flipping the switch of an amplifier on and off.
yup, same here,,Not sure what the problem is but I don't like it
put me down too, guess i originally thought it was some sort of noise cancellation amplification type of thing.
I've only noticed that while the other person's phone is ringing. Haven't had an issue during a conversation though.
Nice to know I'm not the only one I notice it most when the phone is ringing before the person I am calling answers...sometimes during the conversation itself. Not a huge deal, but a minor annoyance.

Interferences in earbud

I have a pretty annoying problem because from the earbud (under the wrtitten SONY) comes interfecences while i'm speaking with someone using the mobile line.
The interference is like that of the speaker near a mobile phone but from the earbud.
someone has the same problem or mine is a isolated case?

I think you mean earpiece...not earbud.
If you hold the phone near your ear you can hear a very high pitched hiss sound while you are talking? The sound has a pattern to it. If so, then I have tried 2 of these phones and they both do it. I don't now if they all do it, but it seems to be common. Some people who don't have such good high-pitched hearing will not hear it at all. You will never hear it if you are outdoors...only if you are at home in a quiet room.

I hear it too. It's the usual GSM "cellphone interference" sound.
Hi i have the same i hear that xd
But what i have noticed this is only in GSM mode ...at WDCMA its ok..i cant hear this .
I have the same problem. Got my first phone replaced and the new one came today with the same problem.
Try only with WDCMA (3G) and See if that help.

I tried only GSM mode and there's no problem, only WCDMA -> the same thing
Good also WCDMA/GSM..
sometimes the problem seems to disappear
Yeah I too have the same issue.
Its not everytime but sometimes,
Its like a electronics interference noise.
Don't know what's this all about ://

I think it's for the bad isolation of earpiece, but someone think the problem come out when the XS switchs GMS/WSDMA

i can hear that hissing too, i ve searched about it, and it looks like latest smartphones have that kind of problem, the only solution i could find is not to place your ear directly on the earpiece, fortunately this phone has a great in-call volume...
earpiece hissing, crackling, buzzing - problem solved
well amigos, the problem finally has been solved for me, reading this forum https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3414732?start=0&tstart=0
so i turned off my phone, i removed the sim card, i cleaned it using a soft cloth, and then i inserted it back, making sure the sim card was placed correctly in the tray, i tested it several times and guess what, there was no more hissing anymore, so the problem is the micro sim-card, those sim-cards must be placed correctly otherwise it will make that hisssing sound
i hope this works for you too
greetings from colombia...
Had my first two calls today, same problem. Interestingly, it gets louder/more noticeable when I'm actively speaking, not when the other party says something.
Sim-Card is fresh from the envelope, so there shouldn't be scratches, dust or fingerprints on it, but I'll try cleaning it up tomorrow. Got the phone set on GSM only, since I've got bad 3G/UMTS signal at home and I'm pretty sure constant "channel-hopping" would drain the battery.
Hi,
got xperia S yesterday. Great phone... only problem is GSM interference in the earpiece. It is there every time when phone is set to 2G. 3G is free of this issue. As I can hear at every call it's a bit irritating.
I don't know what should I do: sent it back to the store (bought from amazon), try to repair in the service centre or learn to live with it?
Can any of xperia S owners make a siple test: put the phone in "only GSM" mode and make one or two calls. Put earpiece close to the ear and listen to it. I wonder if it's design flaw and every xperis S have this issue, or only some of them....
Anyone who got his phone replaced and the new one came WITHOUT the same problem ???
tia

Piotrze, im having same issue and till now i thought its a problem only of mine phone. And till now ive wanted to send it back to service but if everyone has the same issue it might not be accepted at service, idk.

Background "hiss/white noise" durring calls

I've been using a Note 2 demo unit for the past two days and have noticed that during a call, and the other person is talking, I can hear a "hiss/white nose" around the voice in the earpiece speaker. But when the person isn't talking, there is no hiss. I tried this with several calls (and also 1-800 recordings) and can hear it for every call. I'm not sure what the cause is, but it is quite distracting.
On the GS3 is does have a slight hiss, but it is hardly noticeable. The Droid DNA doesn't have any hiss during calls.
Since I wasn't sure if it could just be an issue just this Note 2, I stopped by a store on my way home today and tried the Note 2 that was on display. It has the same hiss/white noise that I'm getting on my unit.
Has anyone else noticed this on their phone?
I'm thinking it may have to do with the Note 2 using P_Rev 6 and the EVRC-B Vocoder. In my area, the regular EVRC sounds better than EVRC-B, but I don't see any way of changing it on the Note 2. I've changed between the P_Rev and Vocoders on other phones by doing ##PROGRAM, but that command doesn't work on the Note 2.

I had the same problem on my first Note 2. Took back to Verizon and replacement had the same issue. Was going to get a third one but the CSR tried it out and heard the same thing on the 3rd one so just returned it all together. Awesome phone otherwise but I make a lot of calls in a quite office, and with no other sounds it was really annoying.
Here is another thread with same issue http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021447
Really hope it is just a bad batch. I'm going to give it a few weeks and try another one.
I have the same issue, for what it's worth. However, I'm lucky enough to almost never use my phone to make phone calls so I can live with it.

I've definitely noticed the hissing but honestly haven't noticed it since the first couple days of having the device. Going to pay attention the rest of the week and see if I still have it. I use speaker phone or etymotic ear buds with mic 95% of the time however

I just started noticing it with headphones. Light hiss behind notification sounds, stops just a moment after the sound. Hmph. Not sure how I feel about it. It's pretty distracting.

I have it but don't mind it too much. Probably because it's better than the tinny distortion I had on the Thunderbolt! I've noticed the headphone jack must be better too. Much less hissing when listening to music with headphones...at least compared to the TB. I can't believe I had that TB for so long...so...painful...

Yeah man, same here. I pick it up every once in awhile now and just hold it in my hands and laugh. What a piece of garbage.
First and last HTC device. They're still making twitter posts saying they're still working on ICS for the Thunderbolt............. loooooool
Had a tb too. Held it today. . It's so bricklike in comparison! Not to mention the problems in function. Think I'm over the light hiss now. ..rarely have headphones in and not listening to music anyway so rarely have a chance v to notice it.

Does turning off noise reduction (menu during call) address this problem at all?
Just an update on my previous post. I made a couple somewhat long calls today and I did not hear the background noise on the other end the way I had in the early days of the phone. Either it is simply a sporadic issue or it has worked itself out somehow.
Sent from my SCH-I605
I don't think it's a noise reduction issue. With noise reduction on or off, Voicemail calls sounded perfect. No hiss or anything. And I am quite sure of what the hiss sounds like, so I know what to listen for.
I'm wondering if it's just a case of the person you're talking to having a crap phone that has outgoing issues. It doesn't do it when I call my brother on his Note 2, just some other people. Wierd.

I've also noticed who I call makes a difference in when I hear it, though I've heard it at least once with everyone who I've talked to... Some every time some only randomly... weird.
Definitely flippin annoying when you pay attention to it...

So in the past two weeks since I posted about this, I've tried calling a few people and tested it out, and I hear it on every call.
When the person on the other end is quiet, there is no hiss in the Note 2's earpiece speaker. But when the person talks, you can hear the hiss "surround" each word.
I've also tried it with the noise reduction feature on and off, and it doesn't make any difference.
Hi,
Does it happen when using bluetooth?
Thanks,
Bryan
I hope it is software not hardware. Was thinking about getting a Note II but this flaw would render this phone unusable to me, I use my phone as a phone a lot.

[Q] Sound died - MDK Rooted

Hello,
While watching a youtube video, the volume suddent cut down to about 5-10% and I could barely hear it. From here on out, I can BARELY hear who I talk to and they can not hear me at all. Forget Pandora, no sound at all even with headphones. In call I can BARELY hear with or without headphones. External speaker = no sound. I tried full factory image using odin and sextapes full md5. Even on first boot, the phone doesn't make its usual sound when displaying splash screens (so it's not a google setting).
Any suggestions? Or must be a board/chip issue?
Best route of replacement? I hear that Verizon replacement is faster than going through Samsung, but which route is actually better?
This really sucks, only had it three months.
John
No input? Interesting. I'd at least like to know if anyone else had the same problem...

I don't know, I mean Samsung might just repair your speaker and send you back your phone whereas Verizon will probably send you a refurb (which most likely will have ME7 on it). If I were you I'd send it to Samsung and ask nicely for them not to touch the software...
I just can't go that long without a phone. Verizon gave me a $10 discount on my bill and Samsung is sending me a complimentary mhl 2.0 hdmi adapter.
Crossing my fingers on the software being MDK.
Verizon replacement was vraum7 and had a broken earpiece speaker. Second replacement fully functional and is also vraum7.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Sorry didn't see your thread until today. Yes I had that happen 1 month after I got a brand new phone. The phone won't ring even the volume is up full (wife called and I didn't know....not good.). So I called Verizon for a replacement, then send me a refur that has a green tint on the upper left corner on the screen. The original phone start working again as the replacement arrived, waited a 2 days and it died again, so I keep the phone with green tint. Call Verizon and ***** again, they overnight another replacement. This one looks like it's a older HW revision as the label on the back looks different.
All this happened about 1 - 1.5 week after ME7 release, so both replacement were MDK.
If I were you I would call them back and ***** ME7 is buggy and see if they will do anything for you.
Good Luck.
I did. Actually I've been getting a lot of dropped calls and call out failure (with both of the replacements they sent on vraum7). The rep reached out to Samsung to see if they could downgrade me and it was a No. sucks, now I am in the same boat as all the people who bought with vraum7/accidental upgraders...
