Do you backup phone before Changing ROM

I have added a few apps to my phone but before I get into changing rom should I back up phone? Whats a good app to back up phone and what do you do..backup phone when its working before adding a bunch of apps then after its all done can you do another back up??
Let me know
I downloaded advanced config tools and did 3 different cache changes that were reccomended to speed it up or something..so I decided to do it and tweaked mine.. Should I not back up now b/c of doing that??
you can use sprite backup
For me, i always, loose all programs after reset, it cleans out old junk i no longer use. But in case i need some save files or backup files for some programs, yes i do a backup for those.
Other than that, you should backup your contacts, call logs, messages, if needed. Best program to do all the above is PIM Backup, its a wonderful free tool that does the job PERFECTLY.
EnergyROM always has PIM Backup in it, which btw is the best ROM out there. Every time i want to place a new EnergyROM, i first do a backup of what i need, then flash then run PIM Backup again and restore. All done in less than 3 minutes
Cheers mate
Closing thread guys,
There are plenty of applications out to the public on backing up your pda.
Also this is an area for rom development.

Something like Acronis True Image for HD2?

Hello there.
Can anyone tell me if some program like Acronis True Image present, for HD2...
Just to make system image when system is adjusted as you like.
And if enything goes wrong, just format and restore system image, and not need to adjust enything again.
10x
for whole system backup:
SPB Backup (my personal favorite, customisable backups, comes with unpacker for PC), Sprite Backup, Resco Backup - all commercial
-> word of caution: be careful when changing ROMs, full restore may crash your system
for selective automated registry settings exports:
MortScript + FDC Task Manager (check in Mortscipt thread for script examples)
Thank you very much. I'll try SPB backup.
But I not understand about "full restore may crash your system"...
Can you please explain what you mean?
I have last official Malaysian ROM, and will never install any custom ROM... I dont need it. All I need is after adjustments and tweaks, just make backup of system, and if anything goes wrong ( after some bad program install, or some bad system change and forget how to go back) just restore all system, whith every programs installed and changes maked.
So is your caution important for me to? Or you tell about custom ROM-s
Sorry about my English
and big 10x
what I meant were stock ROM updates, but it applies to custom ones as well
assume you have official ROM version 1.48, and full system backup,
now after some time HTC releases new official ROM 1.65, you install the ROM upgrade, in the process the whole memory is erased, and now - if you do full restore, your system may (but does not have to) crash, because new ROM may mean new system settings, while restore will overwrite them with the old ones
that's why its good to do 2 separate backup - 1 for system, 1 for files (mails, contacts etc.)
additionally SPB and Sprite automatically discover that new ROM has been flashed and provide you with 3 levels of restore (I don't remember the details, but it's something like full, partial and max safe restore)
Thank you very much.
Of course i will make new back up, each time I update ROM or make some changes
Can you please help me again...
All I need is some Registry Values from this key:
(They was deleted after I install one stupid cab...)
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\FontLink\Sys temLink]
here you are:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\FontLink]
"HelveticaNeue LT 35 Thin"="\windows\tahoma.ttf,Tahoma"
"Helvetica Neue OTS"="\windows\tahoma.ttf,Tahoma"
Man, you really help me!
Thanks a lot!

Titanium Backup will do everything you asked for (I recomment the Pro version and you MUST be rooted).
It will backup and restore apps and data, and will also freeze or uninstall any app.
It's on the market for free, but I really do recommend paying the small amount for the full version.

+1 Ti is one of the few apps I would recommend to anyone that wants to flash roms. You can backup all your apps and settings before a flash and then restore quickly and easily. The freeze function is very handy also. IMO you buy this one and never look back. A MUST HAVE.
A nand backup will be used to restore the phone as it already exists. It does not backup apps and settings specifically but you can pull apks and such out of one. Basically you do a nand before you start playing around and if you screw something up or just take an instant dislike to the new rom you flashed you can go into recovery and restore that nand and your phone will be just like you never did anything. It will not however back up your radio.
What I do is backup a few apps data separately and then go into Ti and backup all my apps and system data. I boot into recovery and I make a nand. Then I go over to usb storage and I move the entire contents of the sd over to my computer. This will have both the nand and the Ti backup on it. I delete the entire internal storage after I have taken a quick look to make sure that the backup on my pc is good. This gives me a completely fresh base to start a new rom from. Once I have the new rom flashed I move my ti backup over and restore. I then move the other data that the backup contains that I want back on the phone over and I'm up and running. I keep my music and other stuff that is just going to move from one flash to the next on my sd card as it isnt wiped in the process even if you do a hard reset and it can just stay there without the hassle of backing it up and restoring it. Do not delete your backup until you are sure that you have everything you may want back across to your phone. I usually keep it until the next rom when I start the process over with a new backup.
@JJEgan - which part
@johncmolyneux ,@krabman - thnx guys
so int. usb storage will also be wiped in the process, right?
also can u clarify
- How to get cwm recovery menu screen from PHONE Switched OFF state(like we see by using the function from cwm app -> reboot into CWM rec)
- how can i delete samsung hub apps by editing system and framework files(or if any other file for that matter)?
(assuming i have req explorer)

[Q] Standard/Recommended ROM Upgrade Procedure to save the existing data

Hello All,
This may sound like a totally noob question.
I have my Galaxy S2 updated earlier to HyperDroid 4.4.7 base only with no surgeons or themes. I was liking the original like touch and feel with the added functionalites. I did install numerous applications from the market place according to my needs.
Now since the HyperDroid 5.0.0 is available , I used the phone ->-Settings->Hyperdroid Parts menu to download and apply the upgrade to the phone.
The upgrade went fine however I have lost all my custom phone settings and my installed applications. The phone starts now and asks for the google account to login.
So is there a way I can recover all phone settings and the installed applications only. Of course this should exclude the hyperdroid base which is updated to a newer version.
I guess the upgrade process did a backup automatically before applying, when booting in the CWM recovery mode. But I am not sure how to restore this backup, where is it saved by default and by restoring this backup would it restore the applications and settings only or it would also practically downgrade the base ROM to the earlier version since the backup was taken before applying the upgrade.
Also suggest what should be a standard and safe way to apply upgrade in order to ensure all phone settings, applications and user files (docs/pictures/music) would stay the same or can be restored after an upgrade.
Thanks for clarifying my confusion once and for all for all future upgrades.
Cheers.
Titanium Backup should cover all of that

If you had read the changelog provided, you would have seen it's a full wipe release. If you didn't back up your data before flashing the ROM, your data is gone.
No, a backup is not automatically made. The backup/restore is a feature of the recovery, you can manually create/restore backups. Installing hyperdroid 5.0.0 does not automatically create a backup.
Making a backup using this feature backs up your ROM completely, all your apps, settings etc including the base ROM. For example if you had a backup of your previous Hyperdroid 4.4.7 ROM and flashed Hyperdroid 5.0.0, restoring your backup would revert you to Hyperdroid 4.4.7
Also suggest what should be a standard and safe way to apply upgrade in order to ensure all phone settings, applications and user files (docs/pictures/music) would stay the same or can be restored after an upgrade.
Titanium backup should be able to backup and restore your settings and applications, user files shouldn't be touched with hyperdroid's full wipe so they should all still be there.
Thanks for clarifying my confusion once and for all for all future upgrades.
Cheers.

my answers in bold/red above

tittanium ,,,

Little problem when I install a new rom...........all my apps aren't on tittanium thus not allowing me to restore them. I have backed them up prior to installing the rom but they aren't there when I open the package option to restore them ! Luckily I can restore my previopus rom through back up, but I am wondering why the apps keep disappearing as they never used to.
Thanks
sr
set the backup location in settings
