i used google voice strictly for voicemail on my sgs2 just fine, but when i try to set it up on my stock htc one it wont let me, and says it fails to get the carrier number or something.. does anyone here have it running successfully?
Mine does the same, but it worked fine on my GS2. But despite the error message, I am still getting Google voicemails in my GV app successfully. I'm thinking that maybe the error message just means that the GV voicemail won't integrate with the phone's visual voicemail

Log into GV from the web and go to settings ... on your cell number click on the "deactivate voicemail" or something of that sort link first...follow the instructions. it will give you an MMI code. I think it's **004# or something of that sort. Then click on the "Activate Voicemail" link that appears after. It will give you another MMI code...i think it's *004*YOURGVNUMBERHERE# or something of that sort (it gives you the instructions). This will manually override the voicemail forwarding number and enable gv as your voicemail. It has worked for me since I got my Skyrocket and I've been using this method since for every phone i've had including my S3 and the HTC One now. Try it out maybe itll work for you guys too.

Have you logged into GV on your PC yet, and then clicked on "settings," and then the "phones" tab, and then "activate google voicemail" next to that number? If so, you may need to deactivate, and then reactive (Google will tell you to dial a number starting with *400 from your handset). I did this, and it got the GV voicemails to start showing up in the GV app on my HTC One

Do these two phones have the same SIM card/phone number? If all you did was switching the SIM card over to the new phone, then you don't need to do anything.
Also, if you did the deactivation and activation on the web, you don't need to set it up again on GV app on the phone.

The SIM card switch shouldn't matter. The GV voicemail setup works by setting up conditional forwarding with your carrier for your phone number, i.e. "carrier, if <your actual phone number> doesn't get picked up by x ring, then forward the call to <your google voice number's voice mailbox>". Therefore, if the conditional forwarding worked with your actual phone number before, it should still work in a different phone.
Having said that, since you already did a deactivation and activation on the web, you shouldn't have to do anything else from the GV app on the phone. I actually never was able to set the forwarding from the GV app and always did it on the web.

Ya I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to do now..
i just uninstalled the app from my other phone(sgs2 that i dont use anymore) and then did the deactivate and reactivate again and then GV seemed to install fine this time.. odd stuffs..
If all else fails leave it set to 'My carrier' and manually change the conditional forwarding and voice mail access numbers to your GV number.

I just went through to setup my GV account on the phone, and I'm running into a problem. First, it says it doesn't recognize the phone number I'm using, even though it's the same number as I was previously using with my last phone. Then it goes to send a text message to the phone to verify the new number, but it says "Your phone number could not be verified, please try again."
I'm wondering if my device isn't activated correctly. I had some issues initially, because they sent me a SIM card that was linked to the wrong phone number, and I had to spend a while on the phone with customer service, then took it in to a VZW store, where a girl played with it for 30 minutes, not seeming to know what she was doing. She claims she got the SIM card switched over to MY phone number, and the 4G data does work... but maybe it's still linked to the incorrect number, and that's causing GV to not be able to verify the phone #?
That's my guess at least. So anyone let me know if you've had the same issue, so I know if it's a problem with GV, or with this SIM deal.

Have you verified if you got the correct number? You'll have to check to make sure your SIM card is provisioned with your number. Might want to ask customer service or walk into a store for them to make sure all is well. Once you get it up and running, GV will work fine. Been using it without any problem.
No issues here. Set up went as it has on all of my android phones.

Damn, guess I'll have to bring it back in for them to look at tomorrow.
In the About Phone, it does show my number... but something's gotta still be messed up with it if GV can't recognize the number.
Just wondering but have you uninstalled and reinstalled google voice? When I set mine up it did say something about voicemail not being able to be set up on this phone.

The voice mail setup isn't a problem. You can set that up on your google voice account online. Just go to the settings and it will ask you if you want to enable google voice mail to your associated number.

Over the past several weeks I even had trouble with my motodroid and I experienced it again today when I first set up my TBolt, although this time it only took re-attempting it once. Running stock TBolt.
I only use Google Voice for voicemail, but it gave me a weird error at the end of the setup, something about not supported on my carrier and I had to check a help document. Seemed to finish anyway and is apparently working. *shrug*
Seems like there are some quirks.
OK, I know I'll probably get slammed, but I searched and searched and can't find the answer...
I'm coming from the Nexus One on ATT where google voice worked flawlessly. Now, on Verizon with the Thunderbolt, it's a nightmare. Incoming calls don't get my Gvoice message, just a notice saying to enter a PIN. Also, Gvoice isn't showing the correct outgoing caller ID... even though everything "appears" to be setup properly in Gvoice settings and on the Thunderbolt.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!! Any ideas?
The information on the Google Voice Settings page didn't work for me. Telling you to dial some crazy * #### blah blah blah.
So I did some calling to Verizon and dug deeper. In order to get GV on your VZW, you need to do these steps:
*71[Google Voice Number]
*90[GVnumber]
*92[GVnumber]
Then GV should work.
I was in the same boat as you. Upgraded from TMO Nexus to this and was going crazy trying to figure out why GV wouldn't work.
Hope it helped?
Why don't u just fork out the money for Verizon's awesome visual voicemail! What a joke. Don't think Verizon likes gv.

I just followed the directions on google.com/voice and mine worked fine. My voicemail gets picked up by GV.
i had previously set up gvoice with sprint so what I had to do in gvoice was delete my cell number and re-set it up so it would register with Verizon. Works fine after that.

Thanks for the post, let me try it out. Also, after digging more at Google.com, I found these bonus codes depending on what network we're on...
Verizon (CDMA network): *71[GVnumber] AND *90[GVnumber] AND *92[GVnumber]
Verizon (TDMA Network): *74[GVnumber] and *73[GVnumber]
What net are we on with LTE?
Worked! THANKS!
Worked fine for me with just the *71-XXX-XXX-XXXX code BOTH times I had to set it up (thursday new phone, last night after rooting). I just called myself from my Skype out # and it rolled to GV voicemail.

That code only sets up forwarding for one group of calls. Unfortunately, you need to setup GVoice on the Thunderbolt to properly forward BOTH unanswered (missed) calls, and ignored (intentionally declined) calls. The two different actions are handled differently by Verizon - hence the multiple dial-in codes. Although I don't know what the third code is for.

I'm not going to get into a huge back and forth over it, but I just tested my Thunderbolt phone both ways...I called it and let it go unanswered, and then I called it and hit the decline button on the screen. Both times it rolled to my Google Voice voicemail. I only set it up with the *71 code.
I'm not disputing that your experience may be different, but that's how it worked for me.
Whenever I try to add my new Verizon phone number, it shows up as a Gizmo account no matter what I select (Mobile, Home, or Work).
Just what I was looking for, thanks!
works the same as it did for me from my og droid. i wish there would be an icon telling me what number the people are calling me on. i have a bunch of people call the wrong number and i never know what line its on.
I had Google voicemail set up on T-Mobile with my N1, MyTouch 4G and it worked perfect. Tried to set it up on my Thunderbolt with Verizon and I went thru the set up procedure, dialed the *71 and my google # then *90 and finaly *92. When I was done I tried to call myself and see if it works, I get a message asking me to put the # I am trying to call and hit the pound button. Please help, Love Google Voice and I tried Verizon tech help and absolutely useless, tried to sell me theirs.

I'm coming from the sensation.. and so far, the Amaze has been great. The speeds are great and the build quality is second to none..
The only issues that are actually bugging me enough to mention have to do with two google apps. First, w/ google voice.. has anyone been able to successfully configure it to work as the default voice mail service? I can't seem to get it to switch over from the default phone voice mail service... any ideas?
Also, with google talk, I can't get the video chats to work. When I connect with a contact, it does the ringing thing and then goes to a black screen and people say they cannot see me. Again, any help?
Thanks in advance.
I don't use talk, but voice works fine for me. The auto setup won't work, but your call forwarding should already be set up as that is network specific on T-Mobile.
Could you specify what exactly google voice is not doing? "Not working" is pretty broad.
I am having the same problem. Seems to work for a while and then goes back to tmobiles VM. I recently manually forwarded the calls so I'll do some testing hopefully it will stick. I called tmobile andbthey said it was forwarded to my gv voicemail but calls were still sometimes going to tmobiles

True. So to be more specific, under the call settings, when I try to switch the "voicemail service" setting from "my carrier" to "google voice," I get an error message that says...
"Failed to retrieve and save current
forwarding number settings.
Do you want to switch to the new
provider anyway?"
Then when I select yes, it then says...
"Forwarding number change
unsuccessful.
Please contact your carrier if this
problem persists."
Has anyone else experienced this? This is the first device among g1, mytouch4g, mytouch4g slide, and sensation that was done this.
Thanks.

Perhaps try going to a different device, go back to carrier settings, go back to Amaze then try changing your settings and see if that works. I've been meaning to give it a try but haven't had the time.

I had it all set up with my last Android device.
I upgraded to Amaze.
I couldn't use the voicemail provider because I had errors but my voicemail was still setup with GV.
Basically the only thing that the 'switch voice mail provider' does is change the call forwarding on your device. The error you're getting, I got as well, but my call forwarding settings were set up before I switched to my amaze. You have a few options.
The first is to go into your Google voice account on the web, and go into settings and then click Voice settings. you'll see your devices and next to them there's a link to activate. It will give you the codes to dial manually based on your carrier to set up call forwarding.
And as a last resort, if you have T-Mobile you can always call customer care and they can change your conditional call forwarding settings so that when the call meets a condition (no answer, out of area, busy) that it will forward to VM. I'd assume other carriers have similar abilities, but none that I can speak with any experience.
Thanks for all the help, everyone. I think I got it figured out.
Now how about the Google talk video chat issues.. anyone else having issues with it?
Google Talk video chat not working for me either. Pretty annoying after paying a lot of money for this phone.

Try going into Google Voice on the web and hit the "activate voicemail" link. It'll give you a number/code to dial in the dialer on your phone. After I did that, GV on the phone was able to set up voicemail correctly, iirc.

Thanks that worked.
Still doesn't work for me. Tried uninstalling and re-installing GV and also using the deactivate/activate link on the GV website and I'm still getting the error. This is frustrating.
Just go in and manually change it yourself in the phone settings, under the forwarding options. There are 4 options, leave the first one disabled (forward all calls). For the other 3, change them all to your Google voice number (for ex., 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx) and you will be good.

I'm almost positive it is AT&T wanting you to use their (nonexistant) Visual Voicemail app. My Skyrocket did the same exact thing. International GSII on ICS even worked fine.
I had the same issue. Make sure it says ATT in carrier when you log into google voice. If it doesn't redetect it. Mine still showed Sprint for 48 hours before it detected I was actually on ATT.
Also entered the codes as mentioned on this site:
http://kalsey.com/2010/10/using_google_voice_as_your_voicemail_on_att/
The important part to save you a click through:
"Second, open up your phone’s dialer and dial the following, replacing 1234567890 with your new Google Voice phone number…
*61*1234567890# (then hit send)
*62*1234567890# (then hit send)
*67*1234567890# (then hit send)
You should see a message appear on your phone after each time you press send. This will set up your AT&T account to take all calls when the phone is busy, when you decline a call, or when your phone is turned off or out of range and forward the call to your Google Voice number."
After doing the above I was able to change Carrier in settings to Google Voice without any problem.

You guys are simply amazing. Had this problem which I suspect is because of the SIM change. I had no problems switching from my Captivate to Atrix.
For other phones, I was able to use Google Voice by following the instruction at GV settings:
**004*1xxxxxxxxxx#
But it seems voice mail still goes to AT&T default voice mail.
I also tried *#61#, and it says calls will be forwarded to my GV number. Still same result
In the phone settings, I changed Voicemail setting to GV number, still same results
I'm wondering if this could be an issue with Huawei software. Do you have same issue?

I think it forwards it at a phone level. So must be something with the settings. Perhaps time to backup and reformat?
