HTC One poor quality control - AT&T HTC One (M7)

Hey all,
I'm just posting to see how many people have noticed HTC's poor quality control for the One. I went through 4 of these before finally giving in and just returning. I visited three different best buys in order to try to find a decent One. I love the phone, the way it looks, the way it sounds. My first phone had crackling coming through the speakers and gaps all around the edges, so I returned that. My second had glue coming out around the sides of the phone and a few stuck pixels. I also want to throw in that none of the One's I saw had the top of the display glass level with the phone. It was always sticking up and my finger would run against it when pulling the notification slide down. My third had a bunch of stuck pixels and I noticed that the screen was slightly yellow. I don't know if that comes from HTC using two different suppliers for their phone displays, but I'd imagine that was the case. Final One had one stuck pixel up top in the status bar. I was okay with that stuck pixel though, it wasn't in a very noticeable area so I decided to let it go. This phone still had crackling coming through the speakers but only on youtube with beats audio turned on. I'm guessing that is just a software issue as all my Ones had experienced that. I went to watch YouTube a few days after I got the phone and during the black loading screen before a video I noticed a few more pixels had become stuck.
I downloaded a pixel test and fixer app and tested with the black screen. My One had developed at least 10 stuck pixels all over the display. I consider that a sign of the display failing. Running the stuck pixel fixer did nothing to help. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. The One is the nicest, most unique idea for a phone I've ever seen. I really want a good one but I haven't been able to find a single one without issues. At bestbuy for the third one, the mobile specialist even opened their entire stock for me looking at each phone and was flabbergasted by all the issues we were finding with the phones.
So has anyone else had as many issues as I have? My builds were all from mid to late April in their build numbers. I'm just so disappointed, I want the One but am not going to pay for something that I feel isn't up the standards that it should be. I may go with the Galaxy but I just know I'll always be disappointed that I didn't get the One. I've tested the Galaxy, the speakers are obviously worse, the headphone sound isn't as crisp and the screen isn't as nice.
TL; DR: I returned four HTC Ones all due to different issues and am wondering if anyone else has had any of the same issues. I'm not trolling, I'm honestly disappointed.

This topic has been discussed countless times. Do we need another thread?

Yes. People should know that HTC can not make high quality phones. Gap riddled "gapless" phones. Capacitive buttons that don't work half the time (like the Nexus One.. they didn't learn? wtf..). Too much glue? Glass that isn't flush??
At best this is a $100 phone. Shame on HTC trying to charge for the junk they produce. Flagship phones should be flawless at this price point. Yes, the oddball phone will sneak through QC, but it's ridiculous already.
That being said, the insides are awesome. I absolutely looooove the battery life I get from this phone. Front facing speakers are a no brainer, and I can't believe no one did it yet.

Were you able to find a phone with no blatant flaws? If so I'm extremely jealous...

The top of my phone's screen is not flush with the speaker grill. Not a huge issue. I live with it. I can probably sell this phone used for $400 when the nexus 5 comes out and get that.

my only issue is that the top of the phone there is a gap between the aluminum and the plastic, gapless my a$$ still love the phone though, came from iPhone 5, had iPhone since day 1

Yea I bought a black 32gb last week and it's literally flawless. Zero gaps and no dead pixels.

Mines flawless. Instead of hollering about it on a forum I would take it back to att and have a Congo line of new ones and check every one of them till I see one I like

Do you guys know the odds of getting 4 bad ones in a row are.
Not,saying it didnt happen, but, the stars wouldve had to align against you , to recieve 4 bad phones in a row,

Mine is excellent except for the left side glass isn't as flush as the right. I only notice it once in a while when dragging from the top so I can live with it.

Im curious,
After the 4 bad Ones, did you end up with a new phone

I seriously think the stars did align against me with that phone. I just read on the forum that the black version isn't seeing as many defects as the silver? Does anyone know if this is true? I originally purchased the phone from Best Buy and they did bring out every silver One they had and the sales rep and I did find defects with all except one. That one had the stuck pixel that turned into more. So I ended up returning and going to AT&T yesterday. I asked them about the one and said I've been having problems with the quality on my last few. They said unfortunately they would only be able to open one for me and I would only be able to exchange it once if there were problems. That line kind of sounded like BS to me, especially since I saw a woman come in with a smashed iPhone and no insurance she got earlier that day that they were willing to commit insurance fraud for...So I ended up getting the S4 for now. I still think the one is a better phone and I know I'm going to regret not getting it. If the issue is truly more with the silver version I'd gladly pay the restocking fee to exchange for the One.

What really bums me out is that I wasn't even going to upgrade my phone until I saw the One. I had the S3 and was ok with it, other than my battery life being garbage. When I saw the one and started messing around with it I loved it so I got it. Then the issues came and now I have the S4, which is a good phone. Its just not very different from the S3. My girlfriend actually picked up the S3 and handed it to me as we were going to bed last night thinking it was my new phone.

Sounds like OP is trolling.
4 defective phones?
You must be looking for problems. 4 straight screens with dead pixels?
Pics, or it didn't happen.

That is to bad
We have both the HTC one and a galaxy s4 in our household.we just switched to At&t from T-Mobile, she actually started out on s3, which died after 3 days
My wife now has the s4, and I have the One, she wishes she had got one instead.
So I have got to use both pretty extensively, and I greatly prefer the One over the S4.

I'm pretty sure you're getting screwed because exchanges are usually refurbs that haven't actually been fixed to eliminate defects
You're just getting other people's defective devices.

[Q] So is there any way to fix the "black blob" problem

I didn't even know it existed until I was messing around with my camera in the dark last night and could see it in the picture. Since then I have come across topics talking about the problem, and I almost feel like more phones have it than don't have it. I am getting tired of exchanging these phones. I started with a skyrocket then exchanged it for another skyrocket after the screen got really scratched up after about 10 hours of owning it and barely even touching it. I then exchanged the second skyrocket for the sg2 because it was $100 cheaper and I read that the sg2 is actually a more powerful phone. I was extremely happy with my choice until I noticed the the screen on my phone appeared to not be set properly. The bottom portion of the screen was about flush with the bezel while the top was recessed into the bezel. This phone was perfect until I came across the spotting issue. This is honestly something I could live with since I will rarely be in a situation where I will see it, but it is annoying that samsung can't get their QC straight. The thought crossed my mind to just get my money back and hope that the nexus comes out.

Return it directly to Samsung if you are having that much of a problem, I have never encountered anyone directly who has had the same problem but you do have some recourse to c.y.a.
I'd take it back to the store you got it at, and if they aren't willing to do something you should be able to send it to Samsung to get it repaired/replaced.
Good luck!

Never seen any of the issue you speak of, and sold tons of these phones. Have one myself, and again, never seen these issues. No offence, but sounds like your either extremely OCD, or lying to make Samsung look bad.
I had that issue on both phone the second was even worse a thick transparent black line was accros and down the screen. It was worse when I watch Netflix or movies at night. I ended going to Device support center and they order me a new one. This current one has a small blob on the top left but is minimal
So I just leave it.

Not sure if I'm so anal to replace it but i notice it. What would the reason for exchange be?

FA34D, slight overhang on the top right and bottom right, otherwise quite perfect. Not sure where the light leaks out of, but I don't notice any leakage; nothing as bad as the capacitive buttons leaking through to the screen on my Amaze.
Edit: had the wrong corners identified.
I've got overhang on top left, but it's so minor to me I don't care. Plus with the fact that a lot of other people are reporting the same makes me feel better. Everything else on this phone is PERFECT, and I'm OCD about this stuff. :good:

FA34EW absolutely no overhang of gaps. Second one I ordered for my wife did so I sent it back. Waiting for it to come back.

My FA34D had plastic that looked shoddy, large gaps between plastic and top speaker cover piece on both ends, and a gash in the speaker aluminium on the botton right. Disappointed; It's going back. Can't comment on speaker/glass since I have not taken the plastic off yet.
Just returned mine. Got a Galaxy Note 2.
The full hd screen on the htc didnt make any difference in my eyes, and the phone was getting hot and loosing battery fast.

Ok I love all the android phones, last year I purchased almost all the top high end phones like HTC one x, x+, GS2, 3, Nexus 4 and so on. I get tired from the phones onece I play with all the roms, so I sell them on Craigslist for little cheaper(I take the loss) and add money and buy a new phone. I own the GS3 for almost 6 months, this is the only phone I kept for that long and still love it. So when I saw what GS4 was like and the HTC I decided to get the htc one because the GS4 looked like GS3s
Anyway I tought the HD screen is going ro be a big deal and the aluminum HTC one looked like high quality, but I used it for 5 days and I faund that htc still doing garbage quality control. The phone is looong thebpower botton is very high, and i have big hands. The phone gets hot when I start using, the battery drains (I almost disabled all the apps). 2 dead pixels and so one. So decided to return and never ever get HTC, becuse every time I buy HTC all the time it has toooo many defects. Mytouch 4g, htc one x and one x+. I exchanged the one x for 5 times so I dont want to go tru that anymore.
This is my opinion. Sorry if it was long.

I for one am not going to bash on someone who simply has a different liking. I have been lucky with HTC; out of my last 4 phones, I only had to exchange one (my HD2) because it was overheating. I always liked HTC build and designs.

[Q] Small Defect, Worth Replacing?

Hey guys, so it seems I have a near perfect HTC One, where I even don't have that gap at the top, but I do however have on the left side near the top left corner a small manufacturing defect that leaves about 2-3mm of the LCD edging out a bit making it feel as if brushing against a sharp ruler on that spot. I rarely have my hand there to really feel that defect through natural use of the phone and certainly not visible unless specifically looking for the LCD edge line very very closely, my concern is if I go in and swap the phone that the swapped phone will have other things wrong with it.
Should I bother replacing? I have no experience replacing/exchanging the same exact phone for a better build quality so this is why I ask.
It's a roll of the dice..
My original pre-order was almost mint but had a similar / minor flaw. I called AT&T and they sent me a replacement..
The replacement they sent had a more brown'ish looking screen and the backlit buttons were very dim. It also had a small gap on the top.
I kept the original and sent back the replacement that had just arrived.
I then went to an AT&T store and the replacement he brought out had some flaw where the backlit buttons would only turn on if it was pitch dark. I refused that replacement and still have my original pre-order One.
If you have one that's close to mint and it only has a minor flaw, I'd keep it..

I don't think it's any secret that HTC has a few QC problems to correct..
The normal user would probably never notice to be honest. We are the 1% that are hardcore users and notice everything.
Most people open the box, turn it on, and don't even arrange their icons never mind tinker..
None of the 3 I had were serious flaws that a normal user would even notice..

I don't think their parts are manufactured to a tolerance small enough. It should be down to about 0.001" instead of around 0.003".

Thanks for sharing your experience, definitely going to stick with this one then considering the hassle and very low probability of finding that "perfect" One.
Also, I want to clarify that the phone is absolutely stunning every time I pick it up and am impressed and excited by it just as I was when watching videos or reviews for it before its release while waiting for my preorder. I've had it since the 18th and certainly not bored with it, which goes to show for something I think. These minor QC issues aren't even noticed by the larger majority, as said in previous post.
Thanks guys/gals, my nerves are calmed about exchanging it

Does anyone have a PERFECT One?

I've done hours of research on multiple forums. Most of the issues seem to center around gaps around the screen and dead pixels. I want to believe that the reason I am seeing that almost nobody has a greatly built phone, without any problems, is because everyone is posting and complaining in the "build quality issue" threads.
I bought the S4 on launch day and loved it. Albeit the squeaky/creeking back of the phone, and the "cheap" feel. However, I did break the screen and will be getting a full refund from squaretade (lovely company, wasn't expecting that.)
I had the HTC One X before my S4 and absolutely loved it. I'd really love to pick up a 64gb Black One instead of going back to the S4, but with all of these complaints I'm not sure if I should. I'm pretty certain that I could inspect the phone in the AT&T or Best Buy store before purchasing it, but I don't want to come off as a **** and make them open five phones to find one that is perfect. I will be purchasing it off contract, at around $700, so I cant seem to justify buying one if it isn't perfect. I'm quite OCD and I just wouldn't be okay with that.
So my question is this: Does anyone actually have a perfect One? And if so, what color-size-and purchase date?
Thank you for your time
im about to be on my fifth HTC One and havent gotten a "perfect" one yet .... im pretty aware of how to put the device through a detailed test to check out its battery, screen for dead pixels, speaker sound issues, gaps, vibrate motor, camera lens failure and rattling, squeaks and creaks on the device dude to flex, scratches. the quality control on the HTC One is pretty despicable ... so upset I traded away my Apple iPhone 5
I think mind is about as perfect as they come. Silver 32gb and I got it a few weeks ago
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 4 Beta
By as perfect as the come, what is wrong?
I think I can fall into this catagory...ive had my phone since 5/1 and ive tried my best to find some of these issues that ive read about....
The lines are just perfect...no gaps and no meet points are uneven. Ive also used the dead pixel finder apps and nothing there either...from any viewing angle.
I believe most of the issues ive read about tend to lean towards the international models...but ive seen them on this forum also. At the end of the day "most" units are probably near perfect...but there will always be a few that aren't.
Purchased: 5/1/2013
Silver
32GB
I cannot find any flaws in mine. Bought a couple of weeks ago at the AT&T store straight - first phone out of the box. No gaps, no dead pixels. 32gb black edition. Loving it!

Not a single complaint
I have the silver 64G version and I've had none of the issues about which people have been complaining. No dead pixels, no fast-draining battery (I only have to charge every other overnight and I can get three full days with Power Saver enabled, unless I watch a TV show or movie, Navigate for a while, or have the screen on for an extended period for any other reason), no backlight bleeding through any screen "gaps", no camera issues, no lagginess, etc.. Everything works, looks, and fits exactly right. It's the first of four Android phones I've owned that I don't feel I have to root or overclock, and it works perfectly with stock everything.
I see that there are some people with some legitimate issues with various aspects of their Ones, and I understand their frustrations. A dead pixel is a dead pixel and there's no getting around that. But I also see a number of very vocal people who seem to be looking for problems where there are none. If you* see a slightly brighter shade of backlight at the very top of the screen where the glass meets the aluminum when you hold your phone at an extreme angle and squeeze the sides really hard, that's not a manufacturing defect -- that's you doing your job as an RM for some competitor, being a nitpicking primadona, or just a troll.
* of course, "you" is not you specifically, OP, but the generic "somebody"

Mine was purchased straight from HTC and its great. It's just as good as my wife's iPhone or my friends GS4. I don't see any issues with it at all.

Thank you for all of the positive feedback everyone!!! I'm still going to make sure the at&t rep will let me take a good look over it, but I think I've made my decision.
Side note:; Are there any de-sense roms yet? Not that I don't like sense.. I loved it on my One X

Google is your friend. Or since you're already on XDA you might as well check out the Original Android development section.
Oh, and same goes for me. My One appears to be FINE to me. No dead pixels, no body issues, etc. I recently cracked the LCD so I sent it in to HTC for repair and hopefully they don't mess anything up to take away from that 'perfection'.
I have some very small issues with mine if I was nitpicking, like the slightest of unevenness between the screen/speaker grills. Also a small gap in the top left corner (extremely small). But don't affect usage in any way and I can only tell if I closely examine. My previous one had dead pixels which annoyed me - so I exchanged it. But nothing worth exchanging here, IMO.

I'm with you and have a 32gb silver with zero issues. My g/f has a 64GB silver with no issues either.
No issues here
No dead pixels, battery lasts the day or more depending on usage, no fit issues that I can see, no random reboots or anything. Really like the device. :good:
Cosmetically, my phone is flawless no gaps lifts or anything. Screen is perfect no dead/stuck pixels and couldn't be happier with it. I know some have knocked the durability of the one but I've been caseless for 2 weeks and not even a single grain of chipping on the black finish.
I have a perfect one
I'm not that happy with the build quality on mine as I expected more from "ZeroGap and Unibody". I come from Galaxy Note N7000, and I was really expecting Apple quality.
Mine is not that bad as some photo's of others complaining, but my upper speaker grill is lower than the screen, so when I swipe from the top, I can feel the sharp edge of the screen. The bottom speaker grill is on the same level as the screen so no bumps there.
Next, there's a thin black plastic that wraps around the screen. On the left upper corner, this black plastic is partially stuck inside and partially sticking out more than the other sides. It was annoying me until I wrapped around a case that covers them. I had a Nokia 920 which also has this kind of black thin plastic, and the N920 had a perfect black strip around the screen. Nokia can do it, why can't HTC do it?
Going to the camera (major deciding factor for me), sometimes the photo looks really blurry on 1/3 of the left and right (landscape mode) while it's perfectly sharp in the center. This is because optical image stabilization over-reacts and blurs the image. This doesn't happen all the time, but it happens enough times that it bothers me. Also when taking pictures of the blue sky and look on a computer, the pixels are garbage and artificial looking. Low light pictures and macro pictures are pretty good.
I have a 32GB silver AT&T HTC One, and Android Revolution HD 10.2.
Mine is perfect, but then again I don't go looking for reasons to complain...
Went to Costco with my GF, we looked at 3 HTC ones and chose the best of the 3.
Ours don't have gaps, glass is pretty flush and no dead pixels. I think we got lucky.

Quality control of HTC one...

I am a tech savy person who love new gadgets.
In my previous days, I had galaxy s3, note 2, and iPhone 5. Also I've went to T-Mobile store to buy the Sony Xperia z.
Sony was a great phone with waterproof and dust proof. But the downside out weigh my decision.
Sony had problems with their ui, like lag, and slow updates. Also WiFi reception were terrible. Also the battery won't hold charges and it would die within matter of couple hours. The phone's design is all glass, therefore... Holding the device would be extremely uncomfortable because it would get way too hot.
So I've went ahead and got the HTC one.
As far as ui goes, it's far surprior than Sony.
Only issues I have with my HTC one is one stuck dead pixel and making small popping noises through speakers. ( I will be exchanging next week)
Anywho, besides those few quality issues, HTC one feels good in hand. Just wanting to keep playing with the phone.
Anyways, is having stuck pixel quiet common? Along with low popping noises ?
I'll get the HTC one, because it's unique design and it's not galaxy phone. ( just joking). What are you experiences with the quality issues with the HTC one?

The popping sound is normal. It's just the amplifier turning on and off.
The dead pixel seems to be common as well. If it's not too noticeable I wouldn't worry about it and just enjoy your phone.
Nothing is perfect in life.
popping sound will be gone with CM 10.2 unofficial.
Had this sound too while using Stock Rom, ARHD or Trickdroid.
Also i've got a very small gap on top of the device but i can live with it^^
Yeah like not really even finger nail width but enough to see it close if you pinch down? That's what I have too. Got a clear Cimo grip back TPU case coming in a day or 2 from Amazon so once the clear case is on I wouldn't even see it.

The dead pixel is very small and only can be seen at black images or at dark places. But still visiable.
Also there is slight gap on top of my device. I'll still return and get the different one.
Oh and my usb charging poet has a chip... This was out of the box as well.

yeah exactly... but it doesn't close if I pinch down.
I'm only using my Fitbag for the One, didn't like cases so much^^
i bought my htc one at my local t-mobile store. it was perfect. then i bought my gf the same phone 1 week later from the same store. her phone had 1 dead pixel that was very annoying. you could only see it on a white screen. but it was a pretty big square. so i took it back and the replacement one was perfect. i wouldn't deal with a dead pixel with a brand new phone.
is this gap normal? got my one yesterday.

it should be not "normal" but seems to happen quite often :/
I've got the same gap but it starts near the power button and goes to the left corner (facing the phone as normal)
Cool, t mobile is sending me a new one so if the one they send is the same I will just keep this one. Otherwise it's one sexy device

So, I went to the local store and found the one with 7/2/13 manufactured HTC one. I assume being the lastest made was gonna be on par with quality.
And volla! My third one paid off! It's in perfect quality. No dead pixels, no gaps, no glue sticking out.
Mean while, I made a call to tmobile and they sent me another one... But this one looks like refurbished phone. But didn't have any dead pixels. Although it has small gap and glue sticking out... Looks very refurbished and looks like the company were rushing the device to build.
Both are solid without any noticeable defects. I'll be keeping the one out of new box. And send the replacement one. Although this one doesn't have any dead pixels.
I guess later built phones are more quality vs earlier manufactured date. So far, it's an amazing phone. I'm so happy with it in the end and paid off!
Anyways, wish you the best everyone.
