i've searched the threads and have not really found a direct answer to what I was searching for.. thus created this
curious to know.. is the xperia x10i capable of achieving any of the following (or will be in the future)
a) instead of the arc scroll for unlocking.. something similar to the iphone (slide)
b) password input (num pad) instead of the draw pattern
c) I know the image size for the wallpaper has to be (appx) 900 x 600 for it to fit properly in the background.. but any chances of having an image which is LOCKED on each page and when you scroll to another page.. it doesnt change?
d) having a different wallpaper for when the phone is locked versus home screen
e) changing background of sms screen? inserting image & changing the font bubble for the sender and receiver of text messages
f) double click functions (similar to iphone) where a double click can perform certain tasks such as opening a smaller window of music and changing songs
-- this would also apply to when the phone is locked (once again.. like the iphone)
that's all I could think of for now haha.. cheers

You should move on (emotionally).. and embrace the differences.. it's what makes the x10 an X10, and not an iphone... plus.. you'll find when you dig around on the market and search this forum, you'll find that as it's android you can customise it beyond your wildest dreams!! Especially compared to the limited changes you could make on the iphone.

to tell you the truth.. i'm loving it! (mcdonalds)
i'm comparing it to my old 8gb 3G iphone and the x10i blows it away.. the speed, the graphics and most importantly.. I GET RECEPTION EVERYWHERE.. impressive.

I installed GOTO and a question regarding that.. on the lock screen.. it shows (default) text messages, call log and gmail.. can I customize those icons.. as in.. instead of what is presently there.. put text, dialer & music?
& is there any customized 'dailer' that you would recommend? default is pretty.. default lol
& ADW launcher decent? currently using that
I don't use GOTO so can't help with that, but I do use ADW and wouldn't use anything else, but I'm going to give Launcher Pro a whirl when we get the update.
Try SuperDial by Episode6 (off the market).. it's really good.
ADW is highly customisable - it will take you a while to uncover all it's wonders!.. first thing you need to do when you download it is go into the settings and switch off the "horizontal drawer" feature in the "Drawer settings" menu - doesn't work very well.. but the rest of it is really then down to you... and your wild imagination!!!
If you want to Root you can do even more, but I'm not that fussed about it personally (and I don't have that much spare time on my hands!)...
I downloaded DesktopVisualiser too (had to google that, couldn't find it on the market for some reason).. but that allows you to create your own icon (on your image editing software on your PC) and then assign an app shortcut to them - I created 4 red buttons for my actions buttons - at the bottom of ADW screen - for my 4 main acitvities - Call, Text, Email, Internet.. but you can also use photo's too..
Have fun!
oh.. and check this thread out... there's tonnes of ideas in here.. a lot of it is on rooted phones, but much of it can still be done on a non-rooted handset...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=713391
you weren't kidding about superdial.. nice!
i've already rooted the xperia & used titaniumbackup to back everything up.. I guess the more I look into it the more I would be able to customize it (i'm on the same boat.. no time)
is there another software which I could use other than DesktopVisualiser to customize the icons? do you have a guide on how to do it with desktopvisualiser?
yeah that thread is nice but going through 124 pages might take a while
i'll put up some pics of my phone when I get a chance.. is shootme currently the best software to take phone snapshots or is there something better?
Hi!
Any developer out there who would make a little change at an existing apk(xml)?
Best regards!
still searching...
what type of change?
if you mean adding a new element to the xml i think that you cannot because then you need to rebuild (compile and especially pre-compile) the apk.
but if you are talking about changing some values of an already existing object that may work.
What apk ? And what do you want changed ? Need to post a little more detail if you expect an answer. It would also help if you upload the apk.

Thanks for your answers!!!
I'll try to explain it:
It's an hotspot widget, which allows to turn on Wifi Hotspot by just clicking the toggle.
When clicking the toggle, Hotspot is "starting", that means it's not ready but on the way. When Hotspot has fully starting has finished and is available to be used there is another toggle icon.
So, what is missing right now, is, that after pressing the toggle the indicator graphic shows "starting".
Hmm, my english isn't very good, but i'll give the best to make it understandable. Therefore a made two screenshots and add the graphic which should appear when having pressed the toggle and before the toggle has changed to the one displayed at the second screenshot:
So, what has to be changed, is - to my opinion - the parameters for appwidget_settings_ind_mid_c.9.png - so that the attached graphic is displayed.
I have to mention that i already modified the apk by changing stat_sys_tether_wifi_off and stat_sys_tether_wifi_on.

To decompile I need your framework apk.
I only have the apk i attached. The Widget was downloaded from the market (free).
Ok, i made new screenshots to explain:
1.) Hotspot "Off":
2.) Hotspot "starting":
3.) Hotspot "On":
When "Tethering oder Hotspot aktiv" is displayed (=starting modus, second screenshot) in the status line after pressing the toggle, there should appear this
instead of this

Check the attached file whether it working or not. You have some problem with images . Then do not appear properly.
Thanks, but nothing changed. It's still like in the 3 screenshots above.
EDIT:
Oh, i forgot to mention, that changes must affect drawable-mdpi as the device (Sonyericsson Xperia Active has only 320x480 pixel screen resolution!!
@musarraf172
Could this be the reason, that nothing changed? Am i right, that you changed the xml values fpr drawable-hdpi and not drawable-mdpi? It's my fault, i should have mentioned that it's for a low resolution screen, sorry!!

I changed for both as I was confused . I have tested in on my phone (HTC) . It was working but the images was overlapping.
EDIT:
I think I am misunderstood. What exactly you want to change ? only some icons ? If so please tell me in more simple words.
Ok, i'll try to explain but my english is not that good (sorry):
When i press the toggle
there should appear a dark green indicator line - like here:
And in the end when the Hotspot is fully activated this should appear:
That means, there should be 3 steps:
Off
-> Start
-> On
Why aren't the pics in my post displayed?
Ok, I'll try to explain again:
The indicator is too low (about 13 pixels too low) and too wide (about 12 pixels on each side, 24 pixels total) as you can see at the new screenshot.
So the xml-parameters should be changed for
1.)appwidget_settings_ind_off_c.9.png (drawable-mdpi as it's a low resolution device with 320x480 display)
2.)appwidget_settings_ind_mid_c.9.png (drawable-mdpi)
3.)appwidget_settings_ind_on_c.9.png (drawable-mdpi)
They have to be changed all the same way.
Please(!!!) can anybody help me?
So you want three total icons.
One for off:
One for starting:
One for on:
This should not be too hard to accomplish.
Yes, that would be what i'm looking for.
But maybe it would be enough, if the position of the indicator would be changed.
Can't do it here at work, and it seems someone is on the right track. I can look at it this afternoon maybe.
Are the images separate. Meaning an icon and an indicator bar. That seems like overkill unless the indicator bar is moving (showing progress). I would think that three static images would be just fine.
If it is just the xml that needs to be edited, can you paste it here?
I made screenshot of what the original apk (not modified in any way!) looks like. Unfortunately I'm not sure which xml contains the information for the position of the graphics. But you can see what graphics are available originally and maybe this gives a hint on how the xml is designed? I tried to attach the xml files to thhis posting but the file format isn't allowed. So i attach the original, unmodified apk.
3 static images would be good, also, if possible, but i think that would be more complicated, what do you mean?
Originally there are 2 icons (off and on) and 3 indicator graphics (off - mid(=start) - on). But i think it would be also good to use 3 static images instead of the combination of the 2 static images and the 3 additional indicator graphics.
I also made 3 screenshots what the original unmodified apk looks like when Hotspot is off, has started and is on.
EDIT:
I'm wrong! I just saw, that the original akp works by having a background for all 3 situations (off - mid(=start) -on) and just varies the WLAN symbol in the middle of it. And additional the indicator graphics.
So there seem to be following graphic combinations originally:
1.) Toggle Off: appwidget_bg.9.png + stat_sys_tether_wifi_off.png + appwidget_settings_ind_off_c.9.png
2.) Toggle pressed (Hotspot Starting): appwidget_bg.9.png + stat_sys_tether_wifi_off.png + appwidget_settings_ind_mid_c.9.png
3.) Hotspot On: appwidget_bg.9.png + stat_sys_tether_wifi_on.png + appwidget_settings_ind_mid_c.9.png
This module permanently disables prediction/autocomplete/completion bar within SwiftKey keyboard.
Future versions/updates of SwiftKey might break this mod. Tested working agains versions 5.0.1.87, 5.0.2.4, 5.0.3.26, and 5.0.4.93. EDIT: No longer true as of v0.2 which should be futureproof.

It is because whole prediction is disabled and flow depends on it. Solution for using flow would be only hiding the bar (while prediction/completion would still work) but I have no real intention for this as I don't use it and to get rid of all prediction effects, disabling it fully is still required. Maybe Suggestions Toggle would work better for you (but I don't use flow so I don't know...).
@moneytoo thanks for the mod. Now its perfect.
Anyway to make long press space to toggle keyboards like Google stock keyboard?
I'm just curious but why did you want to create this mod? Prediction is the main attraction of SwiftKey. I mean, otherwise I would use any other keyboard. Just wondering and no offense meant.

I want a nice looking black/dark keyboard (the stock one on my S5 is light). My primary language is Czech which (thanks to Czech declension) can never work as good as in English. I do not write texts anyway - I use it mainly for entering urls in browser so I prefer not to waste screen space as I want to see more search suggestions in browsers (or addresses history) etc.
I hate to be one of those people that asks irrelevant things in a thread, but since you are familiar with the inner workings of the Swiftke.apk, I figured you might be able and willing to help. The one thing I dislike about swiftkey is the auto-space feature that it has. Meaning after you type in a word, it automatically adds a space after. This is a huge pain in the butt when it comes to entering passwords and usernames. Do you know what file(s) in the apk would be responsible for this behavior? I could probably figure out how to change it, I just don't know where to look.

i thought the same when i saw this thread. that is pretty much the whole point of the keyboard (and flow for rapid typing), unless you only use it swiftkey for colorful themes lol, there are far better keyboards than swiftekey if you're only interested in themes. IMO
but you can disable the annoying automatic word correcting as i mention below (which is an annoying) while still keeping the prediction bar (which is very good just to use as spell checker too).

that only happens (i think) if you have "complete the current word" or "always insert a prediction" selected in settings >advanced>spacebar completion mode. i have mine at "always insert a space" and ironically it doesn't insert a space only when you select a word from the prediction bar.
you can keep the prediction bar enabled and stop auto prediction and adding a space (where words are automatically corrected in input field you didn't want) by selecting the option i mentioned above.

For 1 whole year I regularly contacted Swiftkey and asked to fix this they never fixed it, issue is Swiftkey is taking COPIED text as TYPED text. It should take typed words only (this is big reason behind inaccurate/unneeded word prediction). Could you do something about it?
Below is the email i wrote to Swiftkey:
There is one ANNOYING feature I found in Swiftkey. I checked this twice thrice and informing you. The problem is: Saving the words what we type is good but BAD/WORST part is, it also saves the words when you just copy text from other sources for example: Copying random text or paragraph from webpages, Ebooks and Documents. Those text are NOT TYPED by the user and those words get copied to internal dictionary of Swiftkey which I don't like to be predicted while I type. I copy some stuff from webpages to read it later but it doesn't mean that I like all the words in that copied text and it should not add in internal dictionary of swiftkey. Please fix this ASAP.
P.S. I have English and Hindi language packs installed. Experiment yourself. Just copy the below words in text file and save it. I would never use the below words ever. While typing, long press on the below words and hit 'Do not predict again'. It will not predict. But when you open the text file you saved and select and copy those words, they will simply added to the dictionary of Swiftkey and you'll see them come across while you type.
Words:
chateau chatman chatham zuzana zyban zuma zu beau beaune beauregard
i always wanted to use Swiftkey because it looks good, but i hated the fact you can't turn prediction off. THANK YOU.
there is one minor bug though. the keyboard size gets messed up after changing the screen rotation. it ends up being either too tall or too short?
using it on stock-ish Note 3.

tnx, i hope you can fix it
I thought it was the obfuscated method name but it is still the same. Seems like this was caused by later versions of SwiftKey - my two months old version is ok. So it's either waiting whatever new version will fix that or go through changes within apk and attempt to fix "their" bug. I will probably try in the next few days but no promise - it's really low priority for me.
thanx
thank you so much, i hated that bar. Finally. I don't know why they don't offer that option. They have that option in ios. It makes me angry how unthoughtful people are.
Swift Keyboard Rotation Bug
I absolutely love this mod mixed with the fact that you can change the size of keyboard. Both of these combined allow me to go landscape and still be able to see conversation while typing. Same bug though when I rotate it resizes to all sorts of weirdness. Would be like the greatest thing ever if you could fix. I know you said low priority but I would soooo donate if u could figure out.
This Mod disables "Quick Period with double tap spacebar" as well. I reckon that is not supposed to happen.

Hi Guys,
I scaled my interface to small, and everything looks smaller now (better). But the size of the notifications when i pull down the notification bar looks super huge and is not affected by the overall scale of the system.
Is there any way to reduce the size of this notifications?
ROOT?

I know your pain brother. Default dpi/scaling looks like a phone for 90year old with mega eyesight issues + steps to lower it to a good looking system are too steep, so you can have either Large or tiny option. View mode setting has zero effect on size of notifications in respect of incoming notifications and notifications appearing in in quick toggle area. Text Size @ Small makes them notifications look bit better but not ideal considering its a qhd screen..
Try going for small in both of these settings. At first View Mode/Text Size set to small seemed to tiny to handle, but I got used to it already. I would rather have small and crisp text than that default large out of place crap..

Its just that on mate 10 (alp-l29 8.0.0.115 (C185):

No, you are wrong. Text size does change the size of notifications. View mode is the setting that's not working properly since it has no effect on size of notifications no matter what of 3 size options you chose.
See the screenshot I made comparing 3 different sizes of Text size, which clearly show that size of notification does change depending on the chose size of "Text size".
If View mode would work properly, meaning its options would have affect on notification size than Text size - normal could be used, but unfortunately that's not the case, so in order to have decent looking phone Text Size and View mode should both be set to Small.

so what?!
Manual change of DPI does not give you any better results than View Mode - Small, Text Size - Small. Even the slightest change of DPI from "423" (423 is what the system sets with the mentioned settings (View Mode - Small, Text Size - Small)) messes up the whole system - for example, font in Chrome and Whatsapp jumps like crazy even @ 420 which is a small step down, so in short - messing just with DPI in development options will not give you more eye candy/more decent looking system than View Mode - Small, Text Size - Small.
I get it. In all my mobile phones I have used xposed with the appsettings module, we will have to pray for xposed to arrive soon in oreo in order to be able to touch the interface of the system. Huawei must offer better tools for the density of notifications but I do not think it will fix it
Lowering the dpi also or increasing the dp in the developer options did not change the notifications size also. I was having the mate 9 and it was working perfectly for me in this regard. There should be some update to fix this issue.

I set it to view mode normal and text size small and put dpi in developer settings to 392. It looks like as it should have been standard. Anyways, now I have to change dpi after every reboot .

Using the Samsung Messages app on my Verizon S9+, I am unable to permanently change the font size in the actual conversation screen. Yes, you can pinch to shrink and expand font size but that gets reset to standard size every time (unlike on the S7 Edge where it remembered your size preference).
Through Settings, you can globally adjust font size but the only Messages screen this affects is the main Conversation screen which shows all conversations. Once you click on a conversation, normal font size is presented. Frustrating for my old eyes...
UPDATE: Ironically, when you adjust Font Size in Settings, if you swipe the sample screen above the sliders, it shows you a sample Messages screen and the font size does change in the sample, but it does NOT change in the actual Messages app. Sounds like a bug to me as they are depicting what I want to do, just doesn't work.
I'd like to use the stock app as it has some features that are unique. There must be a way to change the font size so the setting is persistent, no?
Seeing the same also. Hard for my aging eyes to see.
And also finding it doesn't follow the global setting for size. Same as you.
Same issue. I don't think you can change the font size just for the Message app.
I when back to my beloved and trusted Textra SMS app.

As I mentioned in my post, this is not true. On my phone, changing the font size in display setting ONLY affects font size in the main Conversations view. Once you click on an actual conversation, the font size returns to the default tiny size.
You can get a newer version on apkmirror.com but it wont allow updating samsung apps for some reson. Anyone have the latest version of messages signed by samsung that will install?
They need ro bring back the S8 messaging app which has this inbuilt feature to adjust text. Wonder, why they ripped off that useful feature.

It doesnt stick.
I updated my original post with this tidbit:
UPDATE: Ironically, when you adjust global Font Size in Settings, if you swipe the sample screen above the sliders, it shows you a sample Messages screen and the font size does change in the sample, but it does NOT change in the actual Messages app. Sounds like a bug to me as they are depicting what I want to do, just doesn't work.
Hopefully Samsung will acknowledge this bug and release a new version of the app. Clearly the global Font Size Setting is supposed to do exactly this.
Same thing. Very frustrating

It's really not that hard to pinch zoom. Takes a half second. Sure, it'd be nice if it would stick but, c'mon man.
I had a problem with the Background colors in the Messaging ap - some of the themes I like to use are really awesome but when I get to the messaging ap, they used yellow fonts on a white background - nearly impossible to read. I either have to use a different messaging ap entirely (Mood is a pretty good one I found that has TONS of customization options) or just guess at what was written - or change themes.
It's dissapointing that I can't change the balloons or fonts in the messaging ap any more - would be nice if we could - and change font size too - so for now, I am using the MOOD messaging ap and while I prefer the Samsung Stock one better - Mood isn't bad at all.
Its not only internal Messages app, Viber and Hangouts has really small font in input line. Tried increasing font size, tried toying with DPI settings. No idea why its like that and only affecting text input lines, but hope some later update could fix that?
Hi Everyone..I just got the 9 plus and the messaging app is different than it used to be. It is just blue bubbles with white background. It wont let me change anything like before and the setting the background wallpaper for messages is no longer there....is that how everyone else's is?
I also switched to Textra for the all of the customization that it offers. It's a free download so I gave it a try and I've stuck with it since. Just my 2ยข

No, not "come on man". It should work as designed, and has worked since GSI-II.
I use Chomp. Let's you change all of the fonts and sizes, including the message notification pop-up.

I think you mean, "It should work the way I want it to work." It IS working as designed. It's just that you don't like the new design.
That's not to say that I don't agree that it would be better if we could choose a persistent font size. I do.
But we're talking about a split-second pinch out to increase the size.
A split-second.
So, yeah... C'mon.

Thousands of people having to take a split-second to adjust for a design bug every single time? No. You're missing the point.
