Hey there,
is the first time i root a phone and i am a bit nervous.
I want to root my gs3 to install photo sphere (the new 4.2 feature) and maybe other apps that require root as well. The problem is that i want to keep the official 4.1 version that i got a couple a days ago from samsung. Is it possible?

That is exactly what it says Delete to wipe /remove .
You can use CF Root that will not wipe your data the above method is to have root and a phone that pass warranty .

I've backed up all my contacts, SMS, etc, everything except apps and app data.
I'm gonna upgrade to JB but first I need to root to backup my app data.
If I follow method 3 on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894
Will it delete all my app data?
If it will, should I just use Samsung Kies to upgrade the firmware to JB?
Thanks
Rooting will not change or delete any apps or data. Rooting simply gives you access to the root of your phone, allowing more control over your phone. personally, I recommend framaroot, a one-click app to root the i777 (and many other phones).
Once you're rooted, I would recommend getting titanium backup, which would allow you to:
backup all of your apps and their data.
backup sms & mms & wifi data & ...
get rid of system apps that you don't want or need.
...and a host of other awesome items.
I don't know whether how updating to JB through kies will affect your app or system data, but I'm fairly certain that it won't keep much of it.
Yes, I know rooting my device will not delete apps or apps data, but that't not exactly what I thought I was asking.
I linked to a specific method(method 3) in a thread(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894) which says that I would need to flash binaries to version UCKH7 in order to root because UKK6 cannot be rooted by SuperOneClick. So basically by asking about rooting my UKK6, I thought I implied that I would be flashing binaries.
So really what I'm asking is if flashing binaries will delete my apps/app data.
But, I noticed you suggested I use framaroot, that looks like a new development but I have version UKK6 where there seems to be problems, will it work with my UKK6?

a dirty flash MIGHT retain your apps and data and still boot, but IMO dirty flashing isn't worth the trouble down the road.
When flashing firmware, it is good practice to start from a clean slate (wipe data/factory reset), which means intentionally clearing the data that it seems you're trying to preserve. I have recently learned that some custom roms even contain their own scripts to conduct additional housecleaning to ensure a bug-free install. To avoid the permanent loss of your data, I suggest using titanium backup to save all user apps and their data, wifi data, sms & mms, (and more) and then safely restore them onto the new rom.

I trust the framaroot compatibility list, which includes the sgh-i777. I have not used framaroot with uckk6 to verify whether it works or not.
@ProbableDesigner,
The rule of thumb is always perform a wipe data/factory reset when changing base. So, flashing UCKH7 over UCKK6 would require a wipe.
You're correct, framaroot was not around when that guide was written. I'm pretty sure I remember someone saying it worked for them on UCKK6. But if it doesn't work, it will not do any damage, so I would suggest try it first and see.
Oh I see, Ok, thank you cyril279 and creepyncrawly. I did not know that you should wipe before flashing.
Also, wow, I did not expect a response from you creepyncrawly I thought you would have disappeared from the forums since you posted the guide so long ago, but it's good you responded since you created the guide, it helps put my mind at ease.
I'll try framaroot and see if it works, thanks again.
Hi,
This is my first time writing here so excuse any of my mistakes.
Its been one year that I own the galaxy s3 and it seems to me very slow, with too many lags. And becomes even slower any time I join wifi and even worse when I finish surfing at facebook.
I always have 700mb RAM out of 830mb. I tried everything, reduce animation, disable ripple effect, clear cache etc. Nothing !!!
Im afraid rooting, mainly because I don’t want to start all over againg setting up wifi passwords, apps etc.
I would like your advice, either for improvement without root, or for the best way to root, cyanogenmod etc.
Thanx

Rooting can speed up your phone alot, it did for me. You won't have to put in passwords and whatnot if you just root and modify the stock rom. If you say install cyanogenmod, then that's installing a new operating system so you wont have all your settings saved, apps and data can be backed up by using titanium backup though.
Best and easiest way to root would be CF-Auto root http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/orig-development/gt-i930x-t-n-cf-auto-root-t1957273 Just follow the instructions on that.

The reason you root your device is to gain access to the root directory of your device. You won't lose apps or data, only if you flash a custom rom (unless you make a backup).

i recommend Custom ROM. Once you succeed in flashing rom. U will njoy trying new roms in our device.
Follow Instructions & do carefully. Rooting is justa one time process.
Later on you can flash new roms any times.
HI again.
I managed to root with cf.
Everythink ok. But i dont see any triangle. So i dont need to use "triangle away"?

You don't need to use Triangle away every now and then. You can use it when you want to take it to service centre!

Is this related to ram? Should i do something about it? Any tweaks or apps?

Rooting is just granting access to the root directory on your device, this wont speed your phone up at all. Depends, if you want to overclock it with a custom kernel then you can speed it up, otherwise because you have just granted root access you would probably still have all the bloatware on it, removing this can speed up your phone aswell, because this will give you more ram.
Then there always another way, which is to flash a custom rom, they dont usually have any bloat, if any at all, so they can be faster

Only apps and their data, nothing else. Make sure you understand what you are doing, as you seem to be missing a lot of basic knowledge.

Not to worry though,if you read everything before you flash a custom rom and follow the developers instructions, you should be fine. But never forget a backup of your apps and data or youll just have to download them all again. Also making nandroid backups is recommended if anything goes wrong at any point, I said that assuming you would have custom recovery
Thanks

Hello all. I have a quick question hoping to get an answer to. This being my first LG, if I do a Factory Reset will it wipe the internal hdd completely clean? I don't recall my Samsung GS3 wiping it completely. I just want to get rid of any non used files and/or folders from apps that were deleted.
Also, I'm running Xposed. Should I delete the mods and uninstall Xposed before the Factory Reset?

A factory reset will wipe the device to a state that looks like out of the box.
So anything thing you have installed will go away.
It won't wipe the microSD unless you select that option but you will lose all apps and such.

Question, will the Factory Reset return the software to 10B or will it still have the 11C OTA software?
Thanks,
You'll keep the version you're on. Thx Tech

Yeah, I figured as much, first LG phone so I thought I'd ask.
I do not know why TWRP (or cyanogenmod, it seems) keeps repopulating my root directory with a supersu folder containing apks and scripts for that app. Is there any way to permanently delete that folder and all its contents? Whenever I reboot to recovery after I delete it, it always comes back.
(Inquiries elsewhere went unanswered. Googled all I could.)
From the looks of it you are in CM rom. SU is part of the rom. Not the recovery.

Great, then that's my new question. Why does CM create this folder and how can I stop it from recreating itself? It's not like my /system/(x)bin/su binaries are being readded.

You will have to completely remove root but with the odd way cm does root I am not sure it is really possible as it is coded into the OS.

Oh there is. Build the rom yourself and leave out super user and root.
Mainly as many custom rom features require root to work. You maybe better off running stock.
If you want to remove root just flash the latest Chainfire's SuperSU, go to the app then select full unroot. Reboot then delete supersu folder.

I use systemless root and don't want any traces of the old method sitting around to be detected. Plus, I'm GApps-free, so that's not really possible.

Doesn't help. That'll remove everything but the folder in question. Going back and deleting the folder after using SuperSU's full unroot option only works until my next reboot, when the folder pops back up again.
