[Q] wireless charging backplate - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

do you think the back plate for wireless charging feature will be thicker than the stock back plate? or do you think you won't be able to notice any difference?

From the videos I have seen it is thicker, cases won't fit it.

I don't care about the cases really, just more so the thickness of it in my pocket.

i think its the same thickness if i remember correctly, only difference is there are pins on it to allow it to communicate with the battery

Ok,I cut two squares out of the plastic to expose the charging contacts.
This is confusing, it looks clean though

Looks like he cut two squares out of the plastic to expose the charging contacts. If anyone sells parts for these we could just buy the plastic from a variant that comes with access holes and put it on the Verizon version.

The last person i recall trying to swap the rear frames ended up with no LTE and no wifi. :crying:
It looks strightforward, but i would definitely like some more detail from the OP.
Did you have to add an copper material to the charging contacts in order for them to make contact with the QI terminals?
Unless our phones differ then yes he added material I did a similar process works great
Any1 trying this you need to be very careful
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
What did you add? It seems like it would be easier and safer to add a good bead of solder to each terminal on the QI piece. This way if you do make a mistake you're ruining the charging accessory and not the phone.

From my experience doing this via the copper tape method, he would've not only had to do this but attached the charging pins to the motherboard that are seen through the mid piece as well.

LOL are you [email protected]#ing kidding me. Verizon blocked up the contacts with plastic on their version of the phone, but left the actual internals the same?
WHY.
"Herp derp here let's take this amazing internationally launched phone and derp it down to our herp level." Stupid [email protected]#ing morons.

Sure.
I solder two stock contacts on the motherboard.
And cut two square holes in the plastic frame.
Buy a N7100 QI wireless charging back cover.
With any QI standard charging pad.

I've also been wondering where one can get those pins. I've not had much luck sourcing them.
Ben
Lmao, seriously. Verizon provides good service only because they invested in lte instead of another technology, unlike the other carriers, and lte won. I don't even care that they put their name on everything.they can do whatever they want with that respect. But they make some stupid decisions sometimes..stupid for the consumer at least. I can't guess what they benefit from doing that

Does the back cover for wireless charging sacrifice nfc functionality? Might have been why big red decided to not include it on our 605s... They try to do the thinking for us and protect us from ourselves
Props to whoever found the contacts on the board!

Not at all, I'm not a big fan either but some people like it.
After about a year my GNexus usb port broke ( using a Philips Docking Station to charge ) so constant wair/tear on usb port can render it useless. I've seen others with similar problems. The wireless option would preserve the port for more important things other than charging.
I tried wireless charging I preferred the extra batteries route

It's just about convenience. I still haven't jumped on board, hasn't been worth the price IMHO, so far. Even with the $20 cover, you still have to get a wireless charging pad.
One other thing to note. Wireless charging is slower and thus preserves not only USB port, but battery longevity! Efficient.

I wonder how long it would take to charge the Note 3 battery. My S4 battery took quite a while to charge. The Note 3 battery is give or take about 1000mAh bigger than the S4
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
Another consideration is whether cases will still fit since the charging cover is thicker.

I like wireless charging, since it is pretty convenient... have 3 charging plates at various plates at home/work, using it with S3 right now. Wonder if there is a Qi card option vs. the plate for the Note 3, given that it is pretty thin.

You can mod it to fit but i hear with the wireless backplate, your case won't fit
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk
I hope it doesn't increase the thickness of the device much, unlike the S4 where it was pretty noticeable. As for charging speculation, I'm wondering if there will be a USB 3.0 specific wireless charger solution or something, if that's even possible. Otherwise I'd imagine it'd take forever for such a high mAh battery to charge up wirelessly to the point where I think it'd be better just to buy the spare battery/battery charger base accessory seeing how good the battery life is.

my nexus 7 takes about 5 hours
If that were the case here then two hours vs. five would be too slow for my tastes. My Note 3 went from 1% to 100% in two hours on the 3.0 charger...

Yes. About the same grippyness as the back itself just different material. And a bear motion bumper. Still haven't dropped my phone.

I don't like skinomi protectors on anything with a pen input. It just doesn't slide well. Back protection, sure. Sides, sure. Screen? No way.
The only one I did like with the pen input was the HTC view and that had a different stylus.
I've had skinomi for my note 10, note 8, and a bunch of phones. They work well on the phones (S4, s3, droid razr etc) but with the s-pen it felt terrible. Constantly dragging and digging into the skin. Just not an enjoyable experience.
When I initially installed the protector on my note 10, I gave it two days to settle before using it, and it wasn't enough. I had to leave the thing sit for over a week before it was acceptable and that's not something I have the luxury of doing with my phones. I had even contacted customer support and they were the ones to suggest letting it sit for at least a week before using.
I could assume it was just the amount of solution used, but I've used skinomi products enough to know what I'm doing and I won't waste my time using them for anything with pen input now.
I bought 2 of the skinomi clear ones during the sale. Thanks for the fyi. I just installed the sides and the back one for the camera and use a tempered glass for the front. So far I like it and it gives the phone better side grip. Although I probably wouldn't have bought it if it was regular price however. It would be nice if they just sold the sides and the camera one separately.

I'm using a Samsung wireless charging cover with a uag case. The fit isn't perfect but totally usable. It charges well with case on with the Samsung official charger and a Chinese knock off receiver. It doesn't work with my official nexus 5 charger.

I can vouch for OEM Samsung charging back and base while in an OtterBox Defender case. Only mod to case was removal of the "foam/rubber" sticky insert on the back. Otherwise, it fits and charges. Tight but it fits.... :good:
haven't heard any friends having something like that

Official S-View Cover Wireless

I just got this in the mail and figured that I would contribute a bit of a review and some pictures in case anyone has any questions.
So far my first impressions are that it feels really good in the hand. Like the original S-View cover, it should also offer some basic drop protection due to the lip that surrounds the top, bottom and exposed sides. It is also a bit thicker in the rear than the plain S-View cover. The only way it is not protected is if I happen to drop it with the case open. I use an iloome flexible glass protector in case that happens, but let's hope not. I will not go into the S-View function as that has been covered pretty well on this forum, except to say I have had no issues with it locking with the front cover folded all the way back. I have tried it so far on a Tylt Vu charger and it worked well. It did get a bit warm, but I didn't find it a cause for concern. I also have a Nokia DT-900 charger to test with at the office. I will be sure to do that and let you know if it charges well. I tested NFC using my Nexus 7 and it worked well. The biggest flaw with this cover has been addressed by Spigen. I have added the magnetic clip to it and it is very effective. I have to say this cover looks very polished and professional, especially with the clip. Overall, I find that it kills 2 birds with one stone. It adds wireless charging, without the loss of NFC or S-view and it protects the Note 3 from minor drops. I haven't seen any drop tests with the S-View but it is a more substantial case than the first effort on the GS4.

Ive read some where that other cases with a magnetic flap sometimes affects the accuracy of the Spen

I have not seen any impact. I can hover at the edge of the screen right next to the magnet with no change in responsiveness. I think the magnet only points straight up.

Just to be clear for everyone looking at this thread, the one pictured is NOT the official Wireless S-View Cover! The one pictured is the Spigen Wireless S-View Cover, not the official Samsung Wireless S-View Cover (like the thread's title reads). Just don't want anyone getting confused, as the thread's title is very misleading and should be edited.
