Hello XDA,
I really don't know what to choose. Just the other day I bought the I9300 Sapphire Black but then I realised I could get the I9305 for only 65 USD more. To get the I9305 I'd have to mail back the I9300 and then get the I9305 sent to me.
I am planning on rooting my phone and find a nice ROM that suits me. Having looked shortly over the ROM lists for both devices it seems I can find one that fits me on both devices. Is this extra price worth it? I do not really care that much for 4G (I don't even have a plan that supports it yet), but I kind of dig the 2 GB ram.
Now my question is, is it worth getting the I9305 for 65 USD more?
I9300
- I currently have this one at home (Seal unbroken)
- only 1 GB ram
- Huge dev. support
I9305
- 2 GB ram
- 4G/LTE
- Less dev. support
- More battery drain (?)
- 65 USD more
I just don't know what to choose... I don't think I'll need the 1 GB ram as of right now, but I'm just thinking what about the future? I remember from my old Desire Z that I couldn't really get ICS because of only 512 MB ram. Could I possibly run into this problem in the next 2 years with 1 GB ram? (I already see new phones coming out with 2 GB ram).
I have been searching all night trying to get an answer for this question... I don't know what I should do :crying:

But as I've already said 4G doesn't really mean that much to me... I'm more concerned about the extra GB of ram and battery life..

i own i9300 and i didn't ever face a problem with the ram! even multi-tasking with over 10 apps didn't effect the ram! battery is always great!

Yeahh... I'm just a bit worried about future proofing just a bit.. Maybe 1 GB ram will soon (next year?) be too little?

*sigh* Once again, because the S4 is almost double the price of the S3. As I wrote in OP I ran into ram limitations on my old phone (512 mb ram). While the phone itself could run ICS (I am now talking about my old phone), it was short on ram... I am just worried that I might run into these kind of problems soon again with 1 GB... I don't know if that's stupid to think.

Nope. It has 818MB of RAM that you can actually use. I usually have about 450MB of RAM left at after booting up, so go ahead and get it. It's got 306MB of RAM more than any other phone on the market.
Oh, and BTW, I'm pretty sure there are some people working on a way to free up all of the RAM in the Atrix. Search the thread in development and I'm sure you'll find some posts about it all somewhere...
Beyond the dual core, the RAM is the next best reason for me for this phone. I start up near 500 and can run anything I want and it never skips a beat.
I use the System Info Widget to track things and I have never dropped below 215 with a ton of crap running!

Haha yea and all my other crazy ass apps that come up on startup! Weather, set cpu, battery minder ECT. And I take that back, i usually have 500 to 520 a couple minutes after startup. I had 450 at the time...but on my Bravo I usually have only about 150MB of RAM after startup it has 512 like all the other phones. Id say it's average for an average phone to take 400MB of RAM for the Android System plus all of your other apps that start up. Oh, and BTW, Blur isn't helping, and I hate you can't end any of that S**T.
I read that the Samsung galaxy s2 has 1gb of ram but when I look at the task manager it says I only.have 838mb. Is that supposed to be right?
Ya thats right. You only have 838mb available after the system memory takes what it needs to run the phone. All phones say they have less available then what they really have due to the system taking up some.

There's only a handful of android devices with 1gb ram out now - it's starting to become the norm now. But, don't worry, 1gb ram is plenty for gingerbread and ice cream sandwich.

I am really having a tough time making a decision to which model to choose.. the north american version or the international version.. I live in Canada, the carrier that I am with (Fido) does not support LTE speeds yet. Thats one reason to go with the international version. I know it has a lot better dev support. Quad core seems nice but not a lot of apps are optimized for it if any. I believe it has better battery life than the north american version since it doesn't battery draining LTE. The only thing for me that stands out with the north american version is the 2GB of ram..
Which one do you guys think I should get?

I would think that since Fido does not have LTE network the north american version would run on hspa+ for you. AFAIK the S4 dual core version has better battery life if there is no LTE.
Go with either and you won't regret :good:

Don't you find that 1GB is too little, I was using my friends and a lot is already being used. And I find that applications then to get closed after not using them for a few minutes.. Wouldnt that impact your decision on choosing which model?

It depends on how you use your phone. If you constantly required to do multitasking for more than 4 apps, then 2gb ram will be a better choice. Otherwise, 1gb is more than enough.

Dude... just go for one with 2gb ram. There is apparently almost no app that needs all 4 cores of cpu. So dual core is fine.
Btw more ram has better affect on performance than more cores. Also, if there is not enough ram, what will you do with more cores? So just go for American version Although international version is sufficient for me, still i consider American version as better.

But if I go with the american version, I would have to give up on the great dev support for the international version.. CM9 Stable version wasn't even released for the american version.

There is also no app that needs 1GB of RAM. Running lots of apps needs lots of RAM and CPU power,
to the point where it's in terms of battery usage and performance far better to share them across multiple cores
so they don't starve each other to death and cause lags.
Btw more ram has better affect on performance than more cores

That's an inaccurate statement. Without any specifications about what the OP wants to do with the phone, it's impossible to recommend RAM or CPU. Both have trade offs.
However software development seems to be a major point in the decision. From past experiences with carrier-specific devices, development for the international version will by far exceed the carrier-specific one.

I know with my phones I do a lot of heavy multitasking switching frequently between apps. I can tell you I don't plan to play much games. I am opened to try new roms, etc+
I dont think 2gb ram is a big deal, I check my free ram all the time and i never got to use it all, not even close...even when multitasking hard (pause a game and the music, write email and make skype call then back to music and gaming) i have 200mb free at least.
The big thing is, int version will have JB and cm10 before usa version, most of the developers have the int version...

I have owned both. I can tell you the american version is good but as always the international is better. Let me quantify. 4 cores vs 2 we know 9300 kills here. Audio quality isn't a question either 9300 kills. Design minor but 9300 has a much nicer back then the us branded ones again Minor. Dev support go look at the ATT and Tmo forums they are sad places so if you care about that and dev then 9300 wins by landslide. Updates 9300 WILL get updates first, historically this means 2 to 6 months before the rest it may be sooner this time but 9300 will always get official updates first which again feeds into the dev work as well. And the one winning point for the USA versions 2GB of RAM YEAH!! It doesn't do much as has been said before very few users will ever see a benefit from it where as you will benefit from all the above and not just a little
Battery life give me a break guys. It's minor your signal strength will have a far greater effect on the batter life than 9300 vs US variants.

But barely any apps are optimized for quad core... probably in the future. I could honestly say the 2GB of ram will benefit me because while I was using it at the store, I was using a lot of apps, and liked how it didn't close any one of them and kept it in memory instead of the international one closing them... still don't know which to choose..

Well looks like you have an answer then. I think you have convinced yourself no matter what version you get you will be missing out which is kinda true. The other opinion would be it doesn't matter much what version you end up with because they are both killer phone capable of doing anything you want.
I don't think any points have been missed we have outlined all the differences and pro's/con's so now it's a matter of biting the bullet for you

Mine you the 2GB of ram is the only thing that stands out for me for the NA version, I have a few more things that I like with the international version as well. Yes even though barely any apps are optimized for it now, in the future there will be apps optimized for it, making it a future proof phone, it doesn't have any carrier bloatware, its factory unlocked, better development support (CM9 Stable didn't even come out for the US version)

One person says get the international you say "well the US one has x"
Someone else says get the US one and you say "well the international one has y"
You even said that the intl one has a quadcore but nothing is optimised for it yet and the 2gb of ram is better and then in the next comment you say that in the future they will be optimised for it and that's better.
Who are you trying to convince here?

Probably not. Most apps rely on serialized processes in their sourcecode, while multiple cores requires parallel workload.
However, phones are long since past the point where a single task is running on the device at a given time.
Let's say you're surfing the web, with a dedicated Javascript and rendering thread that would be 2 cores. The background music (e.g. DRM-encrypted streaming) runs on the third core while other background processes of the system run on the 4.
This allows a very quick rendering of your webpages without stuttering due to CPU-time revokation, while keeping your music playing and ensuring a general smoothness of the OS.
Again, as I said: it's exactly as with the RAM. No single process will "eat" all the RAM, it's always a combination of several processes.

As for me, I might've chosen the i9305, but I also might've regretted it because of the lack of JKay and Domination
I guess you're not having any performance problems but the amount of available ram seems small. I do think about it too but I sure you if everything is working good don't worry about the free ram. I did try few roms and some was worked with around 400 mb of free ram somehow but believe me they was with bad performance than other roms that shows me under 200 mb free of ram. So it seems that is pointless to even worry of the amount of free ram. Free for what? Let it use however it needs at enjoy of your rocket. Multitasking get troubles if this ram is reserved for just showing us. I see some video comparisons of the two models and quad core was better in them as I remember. If apps are not crashing as is on my phone I think is good for you to keep I9300. I had a dual core I9100 with 1gb of ram but it was overheating all the time I played harder games. What if the processor of phone you want to buy get overheat with it's 2 gb ram memory. Maybe the amount of ram will not helping so much. While I play the harder games with my phone now, the free ram is under 100 mb but no matter my phone never get hot as my old Galaxy S2. I think quad core processor is the reason. Stronger processor is better I think than bigger ram memory. If you actually haven't problems of course.

just im Afraid the performance will be same then i lose the nice rom support
and some time im telling my self maybe after some time a new cooker will support I9305
and you can enjoy both

i had been a same situation once before in similar.
i bought a laptop year ago come with 4G RAM , i just didn't know what i was thinking , i bought an extra Memory , (4GB , 50 euros) to make dual-channel, and plug in , initial up
okay, i didn't see any , not even a little bit of performance improvement although some benchmark software indicates something like 3% - 5% performance up.
but it is not humanly recognizable...
actually i can change my mobile with i9305 on free
I think i'd take the i9005
The original one just doesnt have enough ram..
Apps keep reloading. No proper multitasking. Its like im using an iphone..
But still, keep your phone and wait for the S4 is my advice.

That's rubbish. I have the the i9305 and I'm currently running latest Jkay and I've had the latest Domination theme, I've also had Alexander theme. I'm now running the latest Motomoto theme..
In my honest opinion the i9305 is 10x better than the i9300. I have both and can honestly say that the 2gb RAM in the i9305 makes a huge difference. I find the i9300 is a pain to use. The i9305 is AWESOME! It keeps apps in memory for ages, I can be playing Vice City and come back to it 2 days later and it's still there exactly where I left it.
It feels snappier than my i9300 too, I guess this is because all the apps are stored in memory so need need to load or redraw anything.
The i9305 is how Samsung should of made the i9300. If you traded you definitely wouldn't have any regrets.
The i9305 is a beast!

Don't forget the i9305 has 4G LTE (if your carrier supports it). Get great speeds with it.

As long as you make sure you only flash things from the I9305 threads, you'll be fine.
For rooting just go the Dev I9305 forum and look at a thread called "what to do when you first get your I9305" or something like that. It has everything you need.

Okay congrats! Can you share your opinion now, do you feel any difference or is same? And what about the temperature while playing games. I am not going to replace my phone but I still wonder - ram memory or processor is more important for performance.

sure you will touch improvement in performance cause of the ram . special i was facing a problem with my s3-i9300
when the ram become below 100 MB . and u be forced to run to use task killer to increase it
now i feel safe because the ram always up 1000 MB :good:
and sure that reflect on maltitask . no more lag when im opening many heavy program . u won't feel that some program work in background as before
and after install Motomoto thems i feel great
boot animation , and some mods programs is not working
in General i feel happy to convert to i9305 for now ....hehehe
but i will miss the Great OMEGA rom
my advice to any one thinking to sell his mobile (i9300) to get i9305
better to wait and get S4
for me the deal with on free with out pay extra money

Ok so, as the title implies I'm thinking of getting an Xperia Sola on the cheapside (135€) almost brand new. However I do have a few questions:
1. Would you say the phone is worth the price?
2. Do you think it is a good phone?
3. I mostly use my phone for multitasking and gaming sometimes, so does it fit the bill? The 512RAM thing scares me, my Galaxy W said it had 512MB but it had like, 378MB.
4. How is custom rom development for the phone?

1. It's definitely worth its price, even when there is few cons.
2. More Yes than No, It has interesting design, a technology wich is available only for this phone only, called floating touch needs to be improved tho, but It's quite usable in browser. Built quality is not the best, could be better... after a while u will notice some squeaks and other noises it is fixable.
3. That's because there is usable RAM and non usable, can t really explain where the unusable goes, It has to function somewhere else in phone...available RAM is 368. It's enough if u stick with GB android version on ICS takes allmost 90% when no apps are working. Don t recommend to buy one if u are willing to update it to ICS... it would be a huge disaster!
4. I have seen some of the costum versions, for gaming as well, haven't tried yet, i am sticking with the stock one, for battery saving.

You can update to ics, its working flawlessly and even better im on jellybean for last month without hiccups. Nice phone good price...overall im satisfied. Dont listen about ics bugs, use custom kernel for better battery, performance is awesome. The mussing ram is allocated to gpu, mali eats quite a lot of ram.

I gave this brick to my wife, i dont want to hear about this phone anymore - even sony left this phone.
Had HTC Desire X for a while which had arround 300 mb free RAM most of the time and a very good battery life. Now SGS3 and am very very happy.
not worth.
choose phone with 1gb>> ram for multitasking

Its a decent phone and a real awesome one if u r planning for all those mods!! It Lacks a bit of RAM though! You See Actually all the series of P,S and U start going into a sort of lag after a few days before u have to do the cleaning
