Is Verizon's tiered data doable with this phone? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hello everyone,
I have been a long time Sprint user and enjoyed their unlimited data plan, but lets put it out there, their coverage sucks!! I only receive 4g service about 15% of the time and I know Verizon has the areas I travel blanketed with good 4g coverage. My contract is up and I am thinking of jumping ship to Verizon and this phone. My hesitation is with the data plans, if I have 4g available to me all the time I think I may be using alot more data. I may stream more, tether more, and I'm afraid the bill will go exponential. Not to mention I use my phone as a gps alot and that alone could shoot me through the smaller data plans each month.
My question to you all, is what data plans make sense on this phone, especially if you are sharing it with a second s4. I always put my phone on wifi when I'm home, but when I'm on the road I usually find my phone data speeds much faster than hotel wifis and I will often tether with Sprint. Will this still be possible with a Verizon plan? Which data tier are you guys using each month and how much data do you go through? Should I stick it out with Sprint waiting for their 4g coverage to mature? Any advice would help.

Can you do a usage analysis on Sprint's website? I had an oddball situation where I had unlimited and my wife had some old BS 300 MB plan from the BB days, so we had to move to tiered to get her something decent (we get an employee discount through her, so we do not want to separate plans). I ran the analysis on My Verizon and found that I never even came close to 2 GB anyway, and 4 GB is only another 10 bucks if we feel we need it. I am on wifi most of the time anyway, and I have a separate work phone for work. But both of our cars have navigation systems so we never really use phone navigation (and I have an old Garmin for when I travel), so my needs are quite a bit different.

I came from Sprint, too and I was worried about it. I have 4gb of data per month, but only really use about .5-1gb. The most I ever used was 2gb and that was with viewing a lot of youtube and Netflix. You'll love having the better coverage, and the LTE speeds are unreal compared to Sprints.

Most people are fine with 2gb but it really depends on the person. It sounds like you might want to start out with 4gb though. I am on wifi at home all the time and seem to still go through 1-2gb a month. If I am traveling and tether its easily 3-4gb. I am on unlimited data and don't worry about my usage though and am a heavy user with youtube and video.

I'm sharing 10 gb with the girlfriend. She only uses like 2gb, and 8 is plenty for me.

I have 10GB with my plan but have never even gotten remotely close to using that much.
Even though I stream Google Music and Sirius all the time, per month, I typically use 2 - 4GB.

A lot? Two or less a Netflix movies will kill a 2gb data cap. Ditto for Netflix watching quicker than expected if HD mode. 4G and caps are like oil and water. They do not make a practical mix.

How can you guys stand to watch a whole movie on a phone? I can barely stand it on a tablet...and then is only on a plane where network cap is irrelevant. I will wait every time and watch it at home. Once again I guess us old farts have different usage patterns. Like music...I listen to maybe ten minutes of music per day, max. I am not going to rearrange my life over marginal entertainment.

Sprint let me go ETF free

After a few different phones, reporting poor service, receiving an Airave (my house being one of the only places I get a decent speed at)...I decided today to call and complain about the service again, average 3g speeds here are 10-125kb and some places calls can't even be made (i live 45 min south of boston).
Apparently, the usage has gone up, so the already weak service here is far worse then it used to be. For the first time a tech support guy actually gave some legit information back to me. Said signal here ranged from fair to roaming.. and sent me to retention.
I moved my wife and I from T-Mobile/AT&T, payed $260 in ETF.. so this BLOWS, I love my EVO 3D, but the service is too poor to justify paying the bill.
Anyways, the point to my post.. if your service is super awful like mine, and you are new.. you may have a way out if you can't deal with awful service for the next 2 years.
Guess I'll be Ebaying the phones and waiting for the SGS2 or something... lames - please don't pm me about buying the phones, we're keeping them until the end of the month, and I probably don't trust you
I don't see how your getting a bad signal with an airave in the house. I got one and I have full bars everywhere in my 4 bedroom home. I start dropping bars about 50 ft from the house. If you have a airave then you have internet obviously, invest in a good wireless N router and your phone will be stupid fast on wifi.
Oh my house is great, but that is about it.
I fixed my first post... the issue isn't at my house.
Oh ok. I know what your sayin now. T-mobile is getting the evo 3d so its a win win for you.

I thought it was going to Canada or something, when is that supposed to come out? I just left T-Mobile after 7 years or something haha
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_evo_3d_with_tmobile_usa_3g_band_passes_fcc_testing-news-2837.php
Cool, thanks. From the way I took it, I had until 9/7 to port my number. So all together right now I'm kinda in a bad spot, I'm not buying a phone I don't want. I sold my old phone, so I'll prob be crying for a month with a G1 in my hand until something worth buying comes out
G1 was an awsome phone, Im pretty sure its got gingerbread too lol. Well good luck to ya, I know if you sign a two year contract and already have a phone you can save your "upgrade" for the phone you want when it drops.
T mobile isn't getting the EVO,,that was for Canada so they reported
spreading the infection in 3D
Wait, is your evo 3d available for purchase? No need to ebay it, you have a potential buyer right here. I'm in the market for one. Send me a PM and let's discuss!

Did you read my link? I don't think the FCC and T-mobile USA have anything to do with Canada.
From a Sprint Tech
the reason why you still have poor data tx/rx rates even with an air rve is because the airraves do not support data, only voice and text. they are designed basically to do your calls/text via VIOP, and it transmits 1x cdma service(which does no web). you cant use the airrave with out good high speed internet, and you can use your wifi on the phone(assuming you have a wireless router) to make up the for the low data speeds. If you dont have a wireless router, you can go buy one for 35-110 bucks and that would resolve your issues.

I understand where the op is coming from, he said the airave works, its just his general area sprint is lacking in coverage. Im in somewhat in the same boat as him, but I plan on moving next year to a 4g area so I'm just going to hang in there, I like sprint phones and their unlimited plans.
Im also using an airave and wifi, and most places I go have wifi. So I get by.

I think I made it clear in my OP that the service in my area sucks, exceptionally bad.. except for at my house, where I have an airave (airvana actually) and my wireless n router
And maybe one or two other spots have a decent connection, but it'll be a mb of service 1 block, and the next it is 125kb
I'm not at fault for the poor signal which is why Sprint is allowing me to leave without an ETF

I don't blame you if you are moving to a 4g area, I'm actually moving at the end of the month, to the next city over, which has even worse coverage lol. Funny thing is, it isn't like I'm out in some obscure area either...
In general I think Sprint has over looked my area, Providence, RI has ****ty 3g/4g too, very mediocre .. though that is 40 min from me anyways.. sucks, at least I'm not a data hog so not having unlimited won't be an issue most of the time for me.
Im moving north of Atlanta, 4g and 3g are roaring fast there plus its civilization, ill just have to get used to stoplights and traffic again lol.
I was in the far west suburbs of Chicago a few months ago and the sprint and wimax data was painfully slow, almost unusable, So some populated areas are better than others.

This area was gigantic for Nextel years ago, we have like 4-6 Sprint stores within a 5-10 min drive of some sorts here.. its kind of amazing that the service here is so lacking. **** they just opened up a new Sprint store (2nd of the city) where I'm moving too.. and the house I'm buying hardly has even a bar outside of it.
T-Mobile I had 1-1.4 mb dl , and good voice just about everywhere and my CR-48 has comparable data speeds at least with the free Verizon coverage. My wife had a 3GS (I finally converted her with the EVO 3D!) which was probably slightly under Tmobile/Verizon.... I just don't think Sprint has enough juice in this area to cover all the people who got on the Evo/Evo 3D in the past year.
New Bedford isn't exactly in the middle of no where.. I'm moving across the bridge..
The sucks man well you have a change to try another carrier now, if verizon got lte where you live you should try then out, I have them too and speeds are amazing, my 3G varies usually I get almost a mb/s and sometimes 300kb/s but is not as often as before

Unlimited data is how much?

How much data can u use on the unlimited data plan? I know they say its unlimited but how much is that ? and how much data would i have to is before that cap me
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
There is no cap but of you are among the top 5% data hogs, AT&T will throttle your connection speed.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
At what amount of data is that considered
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
That depends how much data others are using. I'd guess if you are over 2GB, you are in the top bracket, not necessary top 5%.
For example, I'm on unlimited but my average usage is only about 300 to 500 MB per month.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
I use 6 GB on my capitvate (now thrill) each month, without tethering. Just a lot of Pandora and downloads, podcasts, ROMs etc. I have never been warned or throttled as best I can tell.
In the past there have been posts asking about data use. I was surprised to see how many people use 15+ GB each month.
Sent from my LG Thrill Faux G
According what I read, AT&T only started throttling fairly recently. Besides, with the poor 3G/4G speed on AT&T network, it is hard to tell you get throttled or not
For a couple months I used my phone as my primary internet because the internet in my apartment complex sucked and we didn't have any other options. Stupid college, but see for yourself.
Mostly netflix on the PS3 which was streaming in 1080p or 1080i depending on the day.
I changed #'s thats why it's two different charts btw.

The most I've used so far is 16gigs. I'm glad to see a higher number than me because I thought surely 16 would get me in the top 5.
Earlier today I read an article about a Verizon user eating up 120gb in a month on their LTE network. Must be nice.

Not sure what amount is considered the top percent but, they will supposedly warn you with a text before they throttle you. Also, throttling just started on Oct. 1st

Talk for yourself, I've got pretty good speeds
Depends on your area I guess. I'm only getting 1.7mbps down at work where coverage is not too stellar. Near the university, everyone gets full bars but everyone is capped at 3mbps down. I have found some areas where you can get 5-8mbps down on non peak hours. You won't get anywhere near H+'s theoretical speed currently so you probably don't need to worry about it.
Sent from my Galaxy S II using Tapatalk
You pretty much have to live in middle of nowhere to get higher speeds. Where I live, I only get about 600k down 60k up Where I work, I get 2m down, 1m up. Haven't seen any spots in DC metro area that exceed 3mbps speed.

I was assuming that AT&T will want to throttle any use over 2GB. When they announced their tiered plans, they said 65 percent of smartphone users consume less than 200MB per month, and 98 percent of users are under the 2GB mark. Using those numbers, all so-called "data hogs" would be subject to strangulation.
I have no idea, but I normally hit around 40mb each month (On an unlimited plan), but in the past week, I've hit 150mb, since I've been using my phone so much.
Thank the Lord I kept my unlimited plan.
For what it is worth, I've used more than 3GB of data several months in a row without warning or throttling.
I'm usually around 3gb of data

Sprint Network

Sprint is really disappointing me. I've been through MetroPCS and Virgin Mobile which are prepaid and I was paying 40 a month unlimited everything and the speeds, and coverage are equal to Sprint and even better.. virgin mobile is running off of sprints towers and I was getting AMAZING speed, about 2 mbs all the time and peaked at 2.4 mbs.
Sprint has been in the game for a LONG time, but they must not know what they are doing or need a new CEO. Look at ATT, T-Mobile, and Verizon.. they are years ahead of Sprint..
I feel like im paying 100$ a month for just being able to use a badass phone that prepaid companies dont offer. I got better support/service using prepaid.. its sad.
today in school, my friend has his ATT Iphone 4s out and did a speedtest.. he was pulling off 5.5mbs!. I couldnt even start mine because i was on roaming with 0 bars... he had like 4/5 bars.. wtf... makes me extremely jealous
Anyone have any idea what could be behind the issues with Sprint and why things havent improved in the past 2 years?
Send them a message by canceling service and flashing your device to work on Metro.
If you don't tell Sprint (with your wallet) that there's something wrong, they will never hear your complaints.
Sprint has improved for me in the past 2 years. I'm in Chicago.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
5.5mbs!? Man, he's gonna reach his cap in like 4.2 days of use. That's the plus with using Sprint, you can use your phone the whole month without having to worry about caps because... 1. They don't cap. 2. Even if they did, you still wouldn't hit it when you're pulling 56kbs.

Yes when I saw it my jaw dropped and yes your 100% right, lmao. I hope one day we will have speeds near this .. my 4G barely hit 6 mbs QQ
You need to buy a phone that meets your coverage needs. If your roaming in an area where your friends ATT has full service, and you spend a lot of time there, you need to switch.
I work in the wireless repair field, and i tell my customers to find a carrier that has coverage where they spend most of their time at, usually HOME and Work/school.
If your roaming in school you cant really complain about data speeds, as your not on Sprints Network.
I will agree that Sprint does have some 3G issues, could be over capacity, could be interference, could be a lot of things. But its intermitent for me and never prevents me from fully using my device.
The other day i got 2.3megs down at my apt.
The next morning eating breakfast near my office i had .2 megs down.
I deal with it because its a great unlimited plan, and its been reliable.
FYI, my personal phone is an EVO 3D, my work phone is an iPhone 4, Sure it gets 3-4 bars but it also drops a lot of calls. Cant say the same for my EVO 3D. Always reliable. So was the Epic Touch, Epic 4G and EVO 4G. Never had dropped call issues with them.
The 4G signal I get nearest to my home in Sacramento (Sadly it doesn't actually REACH my home) is typically about 12Mbit. Oddly enough, it's right near the Sprint store where I get these speeds. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.
The sad thing is, I still can't stream any Shoutcast stations (or SiriusXM) for **** on 4G, have to turn it off, then it streams perfectly over 3G. I hate WiMax.

Exactly what he said. I live in long beach ca 10 years with sprint no issues, and rarely use 4 have, stream everyday while I drive. best bet get whatever works in your most visited area
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Well for me it's the opposite. At my house I get usable 4g. The 4g speeds are around 5-8 megabit. My 3g speeds is worse than 56k and I drop calls often.
I have an Airave where if I send too many text messages the recipient gets 10 copies of each text but on my phone it says it wasn't able to send the text.
The network.sprint.com site says there was 25 upgrades near my area within the last six months and another 25 in the coming six months..... But there is no signal or service quality difference.
It gets worse where I work. I used to get at least 150 kilobytes per second at work then it dropped down to 50 now I barley get 5. No 4g service but I can make and receive calls....
I have no one but to blame but me. I've dealt with Sprint for about 7 years.
You should not be complaining about your friend with that pile iphone4s that doesn't have any access to 4g....
My dad and I are on the Sero plan, 49 bucks a month for unlimited plan but with 500 minutes talk time. Who talks on the phone anymore?

Currently I can't afford home internet that is as good as his cell. I had 50mbit through Cox cable, now I have 3.
Manually install different PRL files until you get one that works good for you. Try 11115 specifically, it works great. Or if your tired of Sprint do what I did and flash to Verizon's 00001 to run off Verizon towers first before Sprint's.
On 00001 I get more than double the speed of Sprint at my apartment, and better signal. But at work I get 3x worse than Sprint speed was, although it is about the same cell signal. Its all about finding the one that works best for you.
Personally, while I've had some problems with Sprint, I enjoy the service. I put my phone the data hell, and while in some places I'll admit that I would appreciate having better coverage, the fact that I used only my phone for internet for two weeks (and did a ridiculous amount on it and still do) means that I trust Sprint. Plus, the places that I don't have service, AT&T doesn't have service, and I would have to deal with a data cap. A friend has Metro and hates it. I'll stick with Sprint. It works for me, I love my phone, and I get a great discount because of where I work.
Interesting and informative thread. My compliments to the contributors.
I'm actually surprised that none of the Sprint zealots seem to have made it into this thread to ream you for daring to speak poorly of their beloved carrier.
Great info about using the Verizon PRL's...their service data service here is consistent where as Sprint obviously couldn't care less about their customers in the NOLA area.
Thank you for your time.

Data usage warning so soon!

Wow, I just bought the phone Saturday!
Triggered the default 2GB of data warning already.
I'd never make it on another carrier, I'd be buried in data overages.
I haven't tethered, watched any lengthy video or streamed any media.
Thank Dan for unlimited data.

porns!!!
Cause of the whole HTC custom delay I almost went with AT&T till I realize how easy it is to go over 2gb of data. 2gb isn't much at all.

Theirs is really only 2gb? Holy crap. I was thinking it was 5 gb when I was telling people at work how you can't beat Sprint's unlimited data.
I'm on wifi a lot of the time (home and work) so I really limit my sprint network usage.
According to my stats (reset on the 1st), I've used 450 mb in the last 6 days on mobile and 900 mb on wifi. I feel like I've had pretty light usage this past week too. I'm going to be house sitting for a week starting tomorrow so I expect to use AT&T's cap over 3g in a matter of days

Hell if Sprint drops unlimited data THEY would be extremely screwed lol. No other reason to stay on a ****ty network with limited data...

you do realize this is just the default settings in the usage app on this phone right? 2GB was not placed there by Sprint and you can actually increase what you want the Data warning to be as i just did in this photo

Yes I fully understand that's just the default warning...I had ICS on my Evo 3D and saw the warning and adjusted it to no cap. I was just meaning to say how crappy it would be to really be limited at just 2GB.

You better say that .... Unlimited is the only reason why I have stayed with sprint so long. considering leaving because of all the lies they tell.

Yeah, this may be true.... but why pre-install a data tracker on a phone whose network is unlimited. Kinda pointless unless you plan on changing something very shortly. Sprint can monitor people abusing the unlimited data so It just seems a bit fishy. Sprint is notorious for telling the customer one thing and doing another. Secondly why is this tracker only on an LTE phone.
Are you using the photo upload on google + and dropbox over 3G?

It's just part of ICS...not like Sprint added it in. They would have had to gone out of their way to remove the data tracker and then people would get mad that built in features have been removed.
My desktop PC has built in battery monitoring capabilities. It's never going to be battery powered but it's just part of the OS

That's the ONLY reason I stay on sprint!! Even though it takes longer to do anything, I can still do a lot more than on any other network for the price. I always use over 4gigs every month. Would be a lot more if it counted what I use on WiFi.

If you don't mind me asking... how the hell did you use 2gb of data on sorry ass sprint 3g. If i streamed video for a month straight i think it would buffer for half of the time, not even letting me reach 2gb.
It's not "sorry", everywhere. My area is ok 3G wise. Sprint outpaces Verizon 3G in my area.
I'm away from home now but this is the crappiest I've had:

Yeah I get around 600-700kbps on download but that is more than enough for the things I'll be doing on the go. I can even stream Netflix with no buffer (after the initial one, of course). It honestly is not that bad but then again I don't live in a busy area. I reckon in that scenario it would suck.

Evo LTE vs. ATT one X

Highly considering taking back my LTE and picking up a One X on ATT. I just can't handle 200kbs speeds when ATT has HSPA+ in my area running 8000kbs. Hell most of the time my data won't even function. Compared to my OG and 3D Evo, that actually worked decently.
What would I sacrifice? Battery life? Obviously the camera button, kickstand, and SD card..
You'd be sacrificing the chances of being a part of Network Vision. Wait til it hits your area and try out the LTE and new 3G updates, then make your decision.
don't forget you also have to worry about the locked bootloader issue. Although there's a workaround available already, it looks very high-risk:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671396
if you think the things you listed above is a good trade-off for 3/5gb of fast data, then go for it.
Who knows when so-called Network Vision goes live in unannounced markets. If you're not part of the 1st or 2nd wave and/or paying $50 or less/mo as part of some SERO plan, I'd return and go with a more mature data network.

i agree 100%. While I'm sure sprint is doing their best to revamp their network it wouldn't be wise to sign into another 2 year contract with them if your data speeds are that terrible and you don't know when the network vision upgrade will hit you...Also everybody is assuming that network vision is going to be the second coming of Jesus for sprint, but until they actually prove themselves you have no reason to believe that their network is going to get any better.
Wimax was absolutely useless for the large majority of sprint customers because of how unreliable it was. I'm sure LTE is going to be better, but i'm not going to take sprints word for it until it proves itself.
To each their own. I don't' mind the 3G so much, because everywhere I go has either open wifi, or there's wifi at work and at home. Problem solved - at least for me.
Most importantly, you're going to miss out on the true unlimited plan. Goodluck with that limit data.

right, no unlimited data, and if there is a "unlimied" it slows down over time, aside from that...its hell expensive..but if you dont mind paying alot of extra for higher speeds...why not.. and from what i read i dont recomend the att one for the reason that it does not have external storage.
3 GB is plenty of data, I bet you don't even use half that per month on sprint. I'm not torrenting on my phone or anything, most apps are less than 20mb, and I'm not streaming full hd movies on a tiny screen.
Do yourself a favor, remember the best speed that you have ever had on sprint (hell even WiMax, I'll be lenient, 6Mbps). Now go into a Verizon or AT&T store and watch their 3g speed absolutely destroy that.
I;m in Dallas, so the city is an LTE firebed, I went into a AT&T store and ran a speed test on their network. I was getting anywhere from 32Mbps to 52 Mbps, yes, you read that correctly, approximately 8x the best speed of sprint.
Stop crippling your phones.

If your not doing ne thing like streaming or torrenting what do you need faster data for?
Id rather have slow data, and have it be unlimited...than have it fast and worry about going over. I dont argue that VZ or ATT dont have better networks...they do...but they also charge twice as much for it while giving you less.
Sprints 3g is fast enough for 99% of what i do on my phone (light browsing, email, fb, etc), and the other 1% im usually on wifi for or lte when it comes out in my area.
Would i like Sprint to be faster...sure...do i need it bad enough that id be willing to spend 2 times what i pay now..not a chance.

3GB is plenty? Yeah its plenty if you don't ever used Pandora, iheart or any other streaming radio app and you could forget about if you ever plan to use netflix or youtube. What's the point of all that speed if you can't hardly utilize it. Sorry but I'll take my change on getting locked in a unlimited LTE plan like Sprint then a teasing and expensive plan like AT&T.

I hate to nit-pick, but EVDO Rev. A caps out at roughly 3000 kbps. I'm not sure where you're going to find a Verizon 3G device that will "destroy" 6 mbps considering that's what they're running on 3G devices.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution-Data_Optimized
While you can also argue that HSPA+ isn't truly 4G, and actually a modified 3G network, and based on the 3GPP standard. AT&T loves to tout this as part of their 4G network, and have fooled most non-technical people. These networks can provide a theoretical 160+ mbps, so yes, any network that can truly take advantage of newer HSPA+ hardware (phone and tower) can pull down incredible speeds.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSPA+
We all know it's not fair to judge these figures against LTE networks, but as an example, my iPhone 4S will pull down about 1.3-1.6 mbps depending on the time of day. I'm excited that they're upgrading my phone after some hardware issues, and will be joining the Android fold once again with either a GNex or EVO LTE.
Ninja Edit: http://i.imgur.com/mHTEM.png - Recent 2 mbps Sprint speedtest. I'm only getting 1.5 mbps tonight though.
