Guidelines for resetting binary counter when touch is dead
I had a bad experience. I had mistakenly flashed custom recovery of galaxy note2 over gapaxy S3. As a result of which my s3 touch was dead. I was in a habit of flashing differnt roms so my binary counter was not zero. But due to loss of touch I could not even use triangle away. I flashed stock rom via recovery and also with PC odin but touch was just dead. It was horrifying to have a paper weight of 500 dollars.
S3 was under warranty but binary counter was issue. I seaeched forum but could not find a proper way to reset counter in the absence of touch. some friends in XDA guided me and I was able to reclaim warranty and after about one month, I had my S3 as new as it was ever.
I then decided to share my experience and the way I can manage with this problem to the forum with this intention that no body else can suffer this mental trauma of losing phone.
Here are steps of reseting binary counter and using triangle away when touch is dead.
1. you must have a USB connector and a USB mouse
2. Attach mouse with phone with the help of USB connector. Now you may use mouse arrow on your mobile screen instead of touch.
3. Make back up and then move that back up to external sd card (if you want)
4. Download and install Triangle away from play store( all credit goes to chainfire)
5. reset flash counter with Triangle away
6. Flash stock rom with PC odin
7. reset data and cache
8. its done and now you may send your phone to service centre to reclaim warrenty

It shoud work. Sometimes connections are loose. You may try by changing cable and mouse. I had also faced this but changing mouse worked. I had tested it on S2, S3 and note 2.

Hi,
Im a first time poster and I have read through the development forum about the usb jig to reset the counter.
I have a galaxy s2 and I was wondering if its possible to do it without a jig? I have reflashed my stock firmware however the count still says (2) I read a post in the development forum that its possible to flash to stock and reset.I would appreciate your help.
You need a jig to reset it. The hole point of the counter is to keep track of unofficial flashes even if a stock rom is flashed back on.
Now why would people be buying and selling USB jigs to reset their count if it could be done without a jig?
you need a jig ! I made one for myself. It's really quite easy if you know how to solder.
Doing your job with a jig would be done faster than creating this thread.
Get a Usb Connector, stick it into the phone, hold a resistor on pin 4 and 5 and you are done. Took me 5 seconds
I have a malfunction usb connector so usb data transfer or my jig is not working anymore. Surprisely the 3key download mode is working, and firmware flash with odin too.
So I need an alternate way to reset the counter before I send it back to warranty service
Is it stored in the bootloader? Can I reflash it with odin?

If the micro/mini usb plug isn't working, it won't matter if you have flashed any custom roms. (I mean for the warranty)
There are 2 seperate warranties, one is the actual device and the other is OS stuff (I believe)
Try this.
Remove battery, insert jig, put battery back in.
This method got it to reset when just insertion of the jig did not turn the phone on.

Highly unlikely that a product has two separate warranty and certainly would be new idea .
Where there nay be two distinct warranty's is one the seller warrants the phone for twelve months that includes original firmware .
Two is the separate cover Samsung give for one or two years .
Pointless manufacturing a rom counter if its not for some specific use and as Samsung have stated rooting and custom roms invalidate warranty then that's what its for .
Will service centre take any notice of a custom rom or root is an entirely different matter especially as few of them are actually Samsung .
Simple to solve the problem but id a user cannot then they just have to a take a chance . After all life is 5/4 against .

That's because either your usb jib is faulty. Or you flashed a 2.3.5 rom w/o reading the warning signs that the new bootloader prevents the jig from working.
Some of the latest ROMs have a new bootloader that apparently disables the jig. Intratech's thread has ROMs that use the old bootloader so that you can continue to use the jig.

Could be 1 of 4 things
1-USB plug faulty (if phone boots unlikley)
2-Jig faulty (if phone boots unlikley)
3-You have flashed the new 2.3.5 with new bootloader (non-wipe bin counter)
4-Your phone is turned on when you plug it in.(phone needs to be switched off)

Excellent, Thanks
Hey guys. So, I bricked my phone. I installed RomManager, then ClockworkMode through it, thus I knew that this phone is not supported. It wasn't there in that list, so I chose Commtiva z71 or something like that. My phone doesn't get in download mode anymore. Could this be fixed at home? I really don't want to take it to a service centre.
Please help me. Thanks!
There's a few people who have done this and I don't think any of them have been able to find a way to get it working again. I think you will have to send it to repairs, sorry

Exactly as u .i try to backup my rom and my samsung was dead in 5 seconds.I sent them to service twice The firt my motherboard is dead and i wait the second time because i thing is dead again I dont use rom manager never
did you tried to download ClockWorkmodRecovery(cwm) than flash with odin multi downloader and then wipe data?
first step i found in solving this issue
i also flashed the same recovery through rom manager. i think i have found the first step in solving this issue. all now is that i need help of all of you guys.
All I did was removed my battery while still being connected to usb . After this i kept holding the option button (the button on the upper leftmost side) and with this being hold i inserted the battery. Now my pc recognised the device as samsung usb composite device and also the odin recognises it. but whatever i try my phone stucks at setup connection in odin. pls help.
this can help thousands of bricked g5s.:angel::angel::angel::angel:

no need to pull battery out and insert it back just insert the battery ,hold down the option key & insert usb cable thats it....but none of these gonna work you will need JTag to flash
You can even try JIG. Because, you've messed with recovery and boot partition but not the arm11boot (bml8). So, JIG (search Google, it is as cheap as $2 and you can even make one at home) can help you.
If it didn't, just search for JTAG services nearby your area. They'll charge you $20-$40 and your g5'll be alive.

That's not true, sadly. ROM Manager embeds a version of flash_image that will try to flash a boot image to bml8 if the device is not properly recognised. That's what happened for the OP, so a JIG will not resurrect the phone.
Oh...Sorry, I didn't knew that! So, final option left for OP is a JTAG flash.

help me,
i tried all method on this forum nothing was working...
first at all my phone cant use charger...i dont know what happen...i try others charger still same...i have both phone i9100 and i9100G but the G version giving me headache!
i wanted to send my phone to service centre due im still on warranty but..my binary counter doest reset...when i put the usb jig after flash patch my phone not boot up to download mode..and reset...its do nothing...what can i do...
but my combo 3 button still working if i flash using my pc...only USB jig not working..please help...
1. If 3 combo button working upgrade to ICS, Then download triangle away. Check the flash counter number matches your count and run the app.
2. Or try flashing the old bootloader. Then use the USB jig.

I9100G have no ICS yet...so cant using triangle away...
using the old boot loader...i already tried...but not working or im doing wrong..?
im stuck...my phone cant charge...and binary counter still got..how to send to samsung..
Have you tried the USB jig on another phone. Just read on internet they are releasing ICS for the I9100G.

You might get lucky
I had a similar problem i atempted my first rom install ever when we had a powercut my phone gave me connect to kies message i had no cwm no bootloader however i still sent my phone away as they had agreed to fix for me in the first place thankfully even though they never fixed the physical damage caused by their packaging skills and a combo of royal mails handling it they were good enough to fix my software problem without charge to myself. I think because they couldnt access the flash counter they were forced to put new firmware on either way big thanks to them i finally got ics on my phone.
They have however since had my phone back and fixed all above physical probs again cheers to them they were either sympathetic with rom or just did it anyway.
Just thought id pop my experience with you
Physical damage is 1st thing should have been fixed

I9100G can't charge, and cannot get into download mode via jig, but CAN get to download mode via 3 button combo?
Sounds like the USB port is broken.
Since it's the I9100G, as you have discovered, there is no reliable ICS released for the I9100G yet, so you cannot use Triangle Away. And without a working USB port, the jig will not work.
However, you can replace that part for a relatively small cost from what I understand.

Look, I can't possibly be sure, because you have the phone in front of you. I can't see it, so I don't know what exactly is broken. But the symptom you describe sounds like the usb post is broken. Others have ordered the usb port part and replaced it themselves for about $13 USD.
But if you are this unsure, I'm guessing you are probably either not willing or not capable (not trying to insult, just stating facts) of doing this on your own.
If that's the case, I think you don't have any other choice other than to just send it to Samsung. But there is no other way for you to reset the counter... So warranty will probably be denied.

Okay so the touchscreen on my phone has died (confirmed by a local repair guy). He wouldn't touch it as it's been rooted, so unless I can reset my counter, I'm going to have to fork out £145 for a new screen! Lol
Is it possible to reset the counter by flashing something (seeing as can't do anything in the OS). Would a USB jig be of any help?
Really appreciate any advice.
Cheers!

so your screen isn't working .. to overcome that you're not being able to use the touchscreen to do things on your phone, you will need 2 things:
first - a USb OTG cable
second- a mouse
this is ur only way to install triangleaway 1.70 by Chainfire , download from this link :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114
install it and u will find at the bottom of this app a command called reset flash counter
Ahh someone mentioned an OTG cable, what are they exactly? I'm assuming they're easy to get hold of? Thx!
this cable enables u to attach USB flash memory,USB mouse or even keyboard .. i have'nt tried anything else

Cool, i'll give it a go.
I'm hoping it'll work on a freshly wiped phone! (at the moment it's at the initial Google setup screen)
USB jig would also work

Basically I have a Galaxy S3 I9300. The USB port is broken, i.e. charges occasionally for a few seconds when i wiggle the cable in the port. It will no longer connect to a PC and be registered as a device.
I need to send it in for repair and it needs to be unrooted and returned to stock. I managed to do most of it on the phone using TriangleAway and Mobile Odin. Unfortunately I am now left in the position that I no longer have root, I am running the latest Touch Wiz UI build, and my Custom Binary (in download mode) says YES (count 1) but the rest says OFFICIAL and SAMSUNG. I'm guessing this is because I used TriangleAway whilst using a custom ROM so it left the count at 1.
Now my problem is that I cannot reset the count as I can't rot my phone because the USB port does not work. Any ideas for rooting or resetting the custom binary count? N.B. Have tried Framaroot to no avail.
If you've exhausted framaroot, you're stuck I imagine.

Maybe if you agree to pay for the USB port repair (I doubt it is much) they won't care about flash counter and your warranty will remain in tact for future.
I'll give that a go, I did not realise they might just repair the USB port.
