Suddendly, whitout me doing anything, I found my S3 stuck at the boot logo (the one that reads Samsung Galaxy SIII GT-I9300). I thought it had crashed and was restarting (sometimes happens) but It is just stuck there. I have tried to turn it off by holding power button for 8 seconds and turning on again, removing the battery, wait a few minutes and inserting again, but it doesn't work.
Home+Volume up+Power for factory reset doesn't work neither. It just shows the boot logo.
Home+Volume down+Power enters download mode and when I select volume up, I get the message:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME:
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: No
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
5 months ago I rooted my phone to use Titanium Backup and since then, I haven't been able to update the official firmware OTA or using Kies because the phone says something is changed.
During those 5 months, the phone has worked without problem.
Just in case this helps, this is what I found in the folder of my computer where I downloaded Odin and the files needed for rooting the phone:
CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4.tar
I9300XXELLA_I9300OXXELL1_LUX.zip
Odin3 v3.04.exe
Odin3.ini
recovery.tar.md5
root.zip
tmax.dll
zlib.dll
Also, soon after rooting the device I unrooted it for the Barclays Banking App to work. (I don't remember how I unrooted it, probably using an App). However, the official upgrading of the firmware was still not allowed.

I don't know and I can't check it anymore. I just rooted the phone, not changed the rom. It was the factory rom of the phone that was purchased mid-November, so probably ICS.
Looks like Sudden Death to me as there is no entry for PRODUCT NAME when in download mode...
Service Centre is your best bet...

As I said in the OP, I can enter download mode by using HOME+VOLUME DOWN+POWER
I'm not sure what is recovery mode, but if you mean the HOME+VOLUME UP+POWER combination, I can't. I just get the boot logo again.

as the rom was ICS, this might be SDS! though, as you can enter download mode, try flashing the latest 4.1.2 stock firmware. if this doesn't work, service center is your option.
definitely SDS, send it in for a motherboard replacement
Just to echo some posts above, it is sds

My phone is official in every aspect and is still in warranty period. What worries me is that it was rooted and later unrooted but not put back to the factory settings (as I said, It doesn't allow me to officially upgrade the firmware). Will this void my warranty?
Can it be returned back to factory settings before sending to repair if it is in a SDS state? (I still can enter download mode)

No problem if its unrooted. If download mode says no custom binary and samsung official it should be ok. Keep in mind that sds might change status to custom even if you never rooted it.

Good Morning,
Sorry for what is sure to be a pretty long post. I have an AT&T Galaxy S II on the official ICS ROM rooted. I started getting the "Charging Paused Voltage Too High" error about every 10 minutes. Research indicates that this is most likely a hardware error, though some people claim success resolving it by flashing to another ROM.
Either way, this is a phone that my work provides, so I needed to turn it in to be replaced. When I was getting ready to unroot it, the phone locked up and now only shows the battery icon on the display (as if it were powered off and charging). This is even when it is unplugged.
The good news is that I can still get to download mode, but that is also the bad news as the phone shows 2 instances of custom binary uploads. I don't want to turn it in for warranty replacement yet as I am sure that they will say that I flashed it and voided the warranty.
As I have access to download mode, I tried to unroot anyway by flashing the official ROM with Odin. This works, is successful, but the phone is not operational. It hangs on the setup screen and then eventually (when I plug it in to charge) will show the battery icon on the screen and will not do anything except allow me to enter download mode.
Looking for suggestions. Can I fix the binary counter with a jig in this state? Hopefully when I get this fixed and send it in I can just get a SG3 and be done with it.
Thanks in advance for the help.
--Chris
Good chance JIG will still work, the flash counter is stored in the bootloader I think. So ROM issues shouldn't matter. As long as you didn't update the bootloader and are still using the one from KH7 the original rom shipped with this phone you should be able to reset it.
Yeah, I just ordered a jig off of Amazon for 2 day delivery. Hope it works.
Has anyone seen a phone in this state?
I would just boot into recovery 3e and perform a data wipe. If it still doesn't boot I wouldn't worry since you flashed the stock unrooted firmware and you don't get the ! triangle during the boot process.

What is the best way to get into Recovery 3e from this state? I pretty much can only get into DL mode by holding the volume and power buttons.
Also, you are right that there is no triangle on the boot screen because I can't get it to boot. They can go to download mode and see the 2 customer binaries loaded though.

Finally got it running with another Odin flash. Problem now is I had to go back to Gingerbread. I can't get Kies to connect on my work PC, so have to wait until I get home. At that point, hopefully I can connect and upgrade to ICS. Then the Triangle Away app should fix the custom binary count before this phone locks up again.
I swear it has to be a hardware problem. Something with the USB port convincing the phone that it is plugged in and charging. I will let you guys know how it goes later tonight or tomorrow.

Yeah, but the phone is screwed anyway. I just need to reset the binary count so I can warranty replace it.
So I am on 2.3.6 per the phone. I did check for update and it says I am current. I know that this is not the case on AT&T as I was on official ICS previously. I connected to Kies and it is not showing an update available either. What gives?????

Start kies with phone Unplugged click tools> upgrade and init.> enter model SGH-I777> enter serial number behind battery> confirm the firmware ( possible it might say your current version 2.3.6)> (if it says 2.3.6)click next to proceed> plug phone to upgrade> then repeat and it Should say 4.0.3 on next try.
So no amount of effort is allowing me to clear the binary counters. I bought a jig and attempted to reset. Phone enters download mode immediately, but doesn't clear the binary count. I never intentionally did it, but it appears that the bootloader has changed.
How can I get back to the original bootloader so that the jig will clear my binary count?
Nevermind, I found it.
Success!!! Had to flash the bootloader, then the jig worked like a charm! Now onto warranty replacement... Maybe I can get a GS3 out of this deal.
Talked to warranty support and they are reverting my upgrade status so I can pick anything. GS3 here I come!

My S4 Verizon Does And Says The Same As His But My System Status Says Custom.
so i was planning on turning in my note 2 tomorrow to get a new phone...so i wanted to put the stock image back on it...went back to 4.1.2, no problem. then it updates to 4.3 and it's stuck in bootloop...just shows the "note 2" logo...i can't get into the volume up + power + home to erase the cache...it won't even get to that screen...all i can do is get into the odin menu...i have reloaded 4.3 about 6 times, trying different combinations of partitioning and not partitioning, neither works.
if i choose the "nand erase all" box...am i just asking for trouble? i've been messing with this for about 5 hours now...any help is greatly appreciated, i tried googling for at least 2 hours but i can't find anyone that has this specific issue...
also, i've tried using kies, it won't recognize the phone...i can't do the one where you put in the model number, says my phone can't initialize the update...grr...

After my grand daughter got my SCH-i650 into TWRP recovery mode and then proceeded to really (&#$^@# it up, needless to say it was totally screwed. My fault though. I ended up flashing with odin back to stock and used the MJ9 4.3 version.I didn't know that the boot loader was locked up tight on this one so I am stuck with it. I rooted, then put the new safe strap on it and got stuck in a splash screen. I could hear messages coming through but my screen was locked. Long story short, what finally worked was what you all said to do in this thread and then stock recovery and factory reset. At least I have my phone back. I really miss Alliance and Trent's rom but glad to at least have my phone working. Thank you all for all the help and suggestions.
Sorry if this is answered on another thread; I couldn't find any answer that helped me, so I am opening this thread.
My Galaxy S3 I9300 is stuck with the error: "Firmware Upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
But when I try to upgrade using Kies I get the error message "This device's version cannot be updated." I get as far as entering my model number and S/N.
I cannot enter recovery mode on my S3, only download mode, so I am unable to perform a hard reset.
My phone is not compatible with Kies3 so I am using Kies.
Any suggestions?

This is the state I got the phone in. I had taken a quick check on the internet to see how to resolve the issue, and thought it would be worth the cost of the phone (40 Euros) to try to fix it myself. Guess I was wrong!

I'm not sure whether this can help, but try mate.
1) Enter download mode and install stock rom using ODIN (preferred)
If this doesn't do the trick, try another EXPERIMENTAL alternative way,
2) Enter download mode, root your device using CF root using ODIN, flash a custom recovery using ODIN, boot into your custom recovery, flash a custom rom (risky)
I never encountered this before so I have no idea whether this can actually help or not, so do this at your own risk.

Hi all,
I was driving home using gps and clicked on a message as it popped up, the phone itself went black and the Samsung logo appeared.
Now I tried the obvious holding the power button but nothing happened, then tried holding volume down and power which replicates a battery pull, which reset the phone but it was still frozen at the Samsung logo.
Upon getting home I tried going into recovery mode multiple times by resetting the phone then holding down, power, vol+ and home but however, I tried I couldn't get it to boot into recovery.
I was able to get it into Odin mode, downloaded the latest firmware 7.0 for SM-G920I xsa Australia which was installed previously before bricking itself.
The phone was never rooted or played with in anyway til this point.
Anyway, Odin successfully flashed the firmware without hassle but the phone still froze at the Samsung's logo and I am still unable to go into recovery.
I tried using a phone doctor to fix it using a fix for a similar SM-G920F which brought up red writing and was possibly the point in which Knox warranty void: 1 (0x0500) I can't be sure as I never really took in what was displayed before.
I reflashed back the 7.0 which got rid of the red writing error and tried using smart switch emergency recovery which successfully downloaded and installed the correct firmware but I was still stuck at the Samsung logo after a restart.
I was onto Samsung and apparently, my phone is from Singapore originally so I downloaded the stock rom for Singapore but Odin wouldn't flash it.
I have installed all drivers but the phone only connects to the PC during Odin mode, adb/fast boot can't see the device.
I've tried TWRP recovery but I still cant boot into recovery mode to wipe cache or anything so any Idea I explore seems to hit a dead end.
Usually, I get things working again but this one is really puzzling me I've already ordered a new phone.
It's a 128gb version less than 2 years old, seems such a waste.
Anyway, does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Hi all,
I was driving home using gps and clicked on a message as it popped up, the phone itself went black and the Samsung logo appeared.

I don't have this device, but with most Samsung devices recovery is hold vol+, home, and power. Once the splash screen appears let off of power but keep the other two buttons pressed.

I remember having this exact same problem about a year ago.. Now I'm not sure if this'll work for you since I was on MM at the time, but try downloading arters version of twrp, (my S6 would never boot to recovery with the official twrp) flashing via Odin and try booting into recovery. Flash a custom rom or restore a backup of you have one. Then from there you can try restoring to stock rom.

I'm not 100 percent sure since it was a long time ago but I believe the red warning didn't impact the recovery and I think it was just to let you know that recovery wasn't stock. And on first boot to twrp it could take about 5 minutes, right after flashing I mean. Good luck any ways mate. Cheers

It still just hangs at the Samsung logo.. Do you mean I should hold the 3 buttons for 5 minutes?

Dropped it down to the local phone fix shop, they couldn't fix the software problem either so they're going to try replacing the battery.

Seems like its a hardware issue, if I replace the whole motherboard off eBay with the same model g920I unlocked will that do the trick or will I have to start flashing networks, bootloaders, pit files and whatever else it needs to get moving?
It is possible to flash ONLY a recovery using ODIN by making your own custom tar.md5. If you leave the pit files and userdata images alone, it shouldn't overwrite your personal data. You could reinstall the entire OS, boot sections, and even stock recovery.
Note: Do your own fair share of diligence, I am not responsible for any mishaps.
