[Q] Firmware Upgrade Error - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry if this is answered on another thread; I couldn't find any answer that helped me, so I am opening this thread.
My Galaxy S3 I9300 is stuck with the error: "Firmware Upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
But when I try to upgrade using Kies I get the error message "This device's version cannot be updated." I get as far as entering my model number and S/N.
I cannot enter recovery mode on my S3, only download mode, so I am unable to perform a hard reset.
My phone is not compatible with Kies3 so I am using Kies.
Any suggestions?

make sure your phone is not rooted, otherwise kies becomes unvailable.

Flash stock ROM via Odin Download at http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/

How can I tell?

How can I tell if the phone is rooted? I got the phone second hand last week, and I don't know if it had previously been rooted.
In download mode, I see the following:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: GT-I9300
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: No
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
I am guessing this means it hasn't been rooted?

This may seem a stupid question but on what am I supposed to download Root Checker? I cannot access my S3 (the reason for this thread).

So why don't you provide us more details on why your phone stuck with that error message so that we can help you. You say you just got the phone second hand last week, so apparently the phone still works when you first get your hand on it. You must have done something to it, causing it to stuck with that error?

This is how I got it

This is the state I got the phone in. I had taken a quick check on the internet to see how to resolve the issue, and thought it would be worth the cost of the phone (40 Euros) to try to fix it myself. Guess I was wrong!

I'm not sure whether this can help, but try mate.
1) Enter download mode and install stock rom using ODIN (preferred)
If this doesn't do the trick, try another EXPERIMENTAL alternative way,
2) Enter download mode, root your device using CF root using ODIN, flash a custom recovery using ODIN, boot into your custom recovery, flash a custom rom (risky)
I never encountered this before so I have no idea whether this can actually help or not, so do this at your own risk.

You are a star!

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 won't boot. Recovery mode not accessible.

Hi all!
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 which I since a week cannot start. It get stuck on the black/white samsung logo. I cannot enter recovery mode, nothing happens when releasing the power button after pressing volumeup+home+power buttons. I can however reach download mode. I'm not sure what caused this problem, one day I just couldn't start it. I read on forums that many similar problems seem to have occurred when upgrading android but I'm not sure this is the case here (unless the phone made an automatic update while I was asleep). I'm not sure what version of android I'm running, but I'm pretty sure it is at least the ICS.
I would like to hard reset my phone if possible. It seems to be easiest through the recovery mode which I cannot get into.. I read things about Odin, connecting the phone to the computer and downloading android to the phone but haven't quite grasped it. Could anyone explain this option for me or point me in the right direction? Are there other options?
I would appreciate any help, especially since my 1-year warranty expired a month ago!
Best regards,
Marcus

Sounds like the symptoms of a NAND RW corruption. Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457458
Hi Marcus,
I had the same problem few days back.
If it's not broken by you trying something fancy, the best solution is to take it to service centre. If you have rooted your device, had installed some custom firmware or are not willing to visit the service centre for some other reason, please read ahead.
All I did was,
Installed USB connectivity drivers through Kies.
Installed ODIN 1.83
Ensured that Kies or any of its processes are not running in background.
Downloaded the official SGS2 firmware
Flashed the firmware through ODIN.
It took around 10 minutes for the full process and I was having my mobile up and running. Using ODIN sounds scary initially if you haven't used it. I have slowly started gaining confidence in it after using it a few times.
Please note that though the process is well proven to be safe, there is still an amount of risk involved.
Sent from my GT-I9100
Download a siyah kernel(like v4.0.1) .tar file and flash through odin.
See if that makes it boot/lets you into recovery.

Adarzannh: I tried the guide but when flashing using odin I get stuck on:
<ID:0/003> NAND Write Start!!
both when trying to flash the recovery package and the kernel. Any clues?
mananbdesai: where do I find the "official SGS2 firmware"?
theunderlining: is it enough just to flash a new kernel or do I afterwards need to flash ROM too?

A couple of things..ensure KIES is not running on your computer in the background. If possible delete it completely. Also ensure your phone is connected to a USB port directly on the computer and not via a hub or to a USB port on a keyboard or something. Odin is a finicky s/w..so..
Also, try different versions. If v1.85 doesn't work try v3.4

Go to sammobile.com or a sticky in the Original Android Development section here..has links to all the stock firmwares.

Lol at underlining. if you flash a custom kernel like siyah, you'll be rooted and get CWM. Using that you can install a custom ROM.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
And youll be safe from the 4.0.4 brickbug if you flash siyah.
You flash a kernel for various reasons like it has emmc cap disabled, you can tweak it etc.
You can flash siyah kernel and stop there.Or you can move onto a custom rom.
Whatever, when its done-backup your efs and make a nand backup.
And yesterday I was downgrading my wifes phone onto 4.0.3.I was using odin and kept getting "failed".After 3 attempts I realised I hadnt put the phone into download mode..........how stupids that......lol
hi there, just wondering, after Flashing the stock firmware through ODIN, do you lose everything in your phone? i need to get all the notes that I have in my phone (notes from the samsung stock apps). I dont have any external sd card in the phone. thanks in advance for the reply.

I had a similar problem, stuck at boot with Biftor v12, which happened after I tried to update SuperSU binary through CWM/TWRP. I don't know why it stuck at boot and why it wouldn't reboot to Recovery. Download mode was still working, so I had no choice but to flash new kernel through ODIN and see if it works.
So if your symptoms sound similar to mine, here's what I did to be able to boot again:
I REPEAT, SIMILAR TO MINE. MY SOLUTION MIGHT NOT NECESSARILY APPLY TO YOURS.
1. Download a suitable kernel in tar.md5 format. I used PhilZ-cwm6 v4.93.6 for XWLSN firmware (see OP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877270)
2. Download ODIN, if you don't have it, found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2189539
3. Once installed, boot your phone in Download mode by pressing Vol Down+Home+Power together until you see a warning dialog. Press Vol UP to get into download mode.
4. Make sure ODIN is running, and NO KIES processes are running.
5. Connect your phone with USB cable to your PC.
6. In ODIN, you should see a COM port with yellow background.
7. Click the PDA button ONLY.
8. Select the kernel file you downloaded.
9. Press Start and nothing else.
10. If everything went as expected, your phone should reboot after a while with a working Recovery.
Only do the steps if you are absolutely sure. This worked for me, and I hope it gives some tips for your problem as well.

Hi Flash-IS-Bright
I have the exact same problem with SuperSU on my rooted Galaxy S2. I updated the SuperSU app, and when I opened it, it recommended me to update the binary, I selected the CWM/TWRP option and then my phone tried to reboot but is now stuck. It can only access download mode.
In doing the process above, you only flashed the kernel? Did this totally work? And all your apps/messages were left intact on your phone?
Any help is appreciated.

when ur updating the binary u should always choose the 'Normal' thing instead of the 'CWM/TWRP' one ma8
if u flash a kernel it will not delete anything on ur phone, all u have to do is to select the right kernel like 'Philz' for example (if ur on a stock JB firmware) and flash the same through 'ODIN' and reboot ur phone

Thanks for your help. I've originally had Jeboo 1.2 kernel on my phone and tried to reflash that again through Odin. It passed, however I'm still encountering the same problem of the bootloop.
Would flashing a different kernel help? I'm on stock JB firmware but with a Jeboo kernel. I am happy to try another kernel (if that would not brick my phone)
Do you have any other suggestions to help me solve this?
Again thanks for your help

You could try flashing hawkerpaul's kernel wiper first and then install another stock kernel like PhilZ or Apollo, and see if that helps.
Neat Rom lite, suddenly struck in boot loop after 1 month of operation.
Dear All,
I have installed the "I9100XWLSZ_NeatROM_Lite_v5.0.1" custom rom and after 1 month of successful usage, today suddenly the phone was dead.(probably due to autoupdates over wifi) . I tried to reboot, but didnt. Tried to restart but got stuck in the logo screen with yellow triangle.
Tried to enter recovery mode, but no use. Only download mode is possible.
Tried to flash the stock rom using odin, but no use, Nand write failed.
Can somebody help me how to come out of this situation. Shall I install a different kernal and see?
Regards,
Maka11

[Q] Stuck at NAND Write Start!! Help ASAP!!

Hey guys,
I don't know what happened but I was trying to update my phone (GT-I9300) using Odin v3.07 and I'm getting stuck at NAND Write Start.
Also, I'm unable to boot into recovery mode.
Also, When I try to reboot my phone normally, I end up in downloading mode but without the counter and all those stats which are written in top left corner. Just plain simple downloading mode. I don't know what to do. Please help me out ASAP as my battery will die otherwise.
P.S. Phone's not charging!!! :'(

You were the one asking about hardbrick and now it seems you could have suffered one. What a fu**ed up coinsidence. Although for now it looks like a Soft-Brick
Ok first , how many % did your battery have when you started flashing?
Second, what Firmware did you flash and where did you get it (link would be good)?
The flashing counter looks good except the the System Status. It states custom which indicates that you changed the Firmware in some way which could void warranty but not always, depends on the carrier and the Service Center.

1) Around 50% but the amount of battery left is much much less than that. I can feel it.
2) XXDLJ4 from Sammobile. I can't find the link. But it was official firmware from UK.
I live in India. We don't have carrier specific phones yet. But I have no idea what service centre guys are going to say. I'm just gonna tell him that I was updating using kies and this happened.

XXDLJ4 is outdated and is from 2012. From what Google says it`s Android 4.1.1 . There are newer Firmwares around. The newest Firmware to my knowledge is XXEMC3. However it doesn`t matter what the Firmware is, it should work even if the Firmware is old. Do you still have the log from Odin? It would be good to see where Odin failed exactly. A screenshot would be great.

Ok a friend of mine had the same issue one time with his I9000 and it helped to switch the USB Ports and then try to flash the firmware again. Also turn off every process that belongs to Kies. Go to Task manager and Kill every Kies process.
Also try to use Odin 1.85, I`ve seen people having problems with Odin 3.xx before

Nope I don`t think it`s charging. That`s why almost every flashing guide says that you should have a fully charged battery before you flash a ROM to your device.
Edit: Ok this is weird. I would try a different Firmware.

Turn your phone off so the battery won`t die. Then download the latest Firmware and flash it the same way you did before. This is the only thing that you could do to my knowledge.
Do you have a Custom ROM on your phones internal or external SD? If yes you could follow up on BHARGAV33`s tip to flash CWM Recovery through Odin and then try to access Recovery and afterwards wipe data and flash a new ROM.

Doing that only for the some past hours. No, I'm unable to get into recovery in the way he said. I've already tried it. I searched around on forum & some people were able to tackle their issue by flashing a complete firmware with 3 files. I download the whole firmware which had 3 files but still no luck. I'm going crazy over here, should I just give my phone to Samsung Care and let them deal with it? Or is there anything left to try?
And BTW, I gotta ask, what exactly happens if someone ticks "NAND Erase All" in odin when flashing a firmware. I've not done this because according to me, it's not advisable to play with things which you don't know about.
1) So, what does "NAND Erase All" in odin do exactly?
2) Will it somehow be helpful in my situation?
3) Also, some people on XDA say that NAND Erase All hard bricks your phone & warranty is also void. Is this true?

URGENT. Installed wrong kernel to I9505 S4. Need advice!

I've rushed into trying to root my Galaxy S4, but used the wrong process. I have a GT I9505 and used the SCH-I545 pre-release kernel making it stick after the samsung screen.
It has a blue light in top corner, I've removed battery and put it back in and when I try to turn it on in top left it says;
KERNEL IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING
Set warranty bit: kernel
I've tried flashing stock ROM but to no avail just hangs on connecting in Odin!
Please help! At this point I would like to get my phone back to normal or root it properly. Thanks
At this point I have only installed an incompatible kernel. It still boots into recovery mode and Download mode!

Download stock Firmware for you phone and flash it from Odin. Does Odin recognise phone in Download mode? If not, do you have kies or samsung usb drivers installed?

I've tried to do that but I'm not sure if I have the correct firmware! I'm in UK on Vodafone.
I have a download but I try to install it and it just says Fail every time!? It still recognises the phone but now it says;
Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. PLease select recovery mode in KIES and try again.
Could you help me find a place to get a decent speed download of the firmware?
I'm unsure of the model details cause I can't get it on!

Try here: http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I9505
I do not have GT-I9505, so I am not sure if there are any faster links. That phone have its section, you will much faster find answer here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4

Thanks for reply.
The second link just links back to these forums don't they? I've actually posted in the S4 Q&A since you mentioned so I'll see what they say.
Will KIES be of any use here?

If you can't boot into the system Kies has no use. Better wait someone with your phone to answer you. (in that thread).
Get your official firmware from Sammobile.com if odin doesn't recognise the phone install the correct drivers for the i9505 you can also try to use a different version of odin 3.09 for instance

Hey there, I had a similar problem, what I did was re-install the Samsung drivers and reboot the computer also I turned off my lock screen and activation on the phone. Between the two of those things it allowed ODIN to have success.

Even you have to put the phone in Download mode?
Edit: I tried the same and it still does not work :/
I tried again, but this time I ran the Odin as administrator. I passed thru NAND Write but in the end of all process it says FAIL and brick my phone.
I am trying to flash this file: G925IDVU1AOD1_G925IZTO1AOD1_G925IDVU1AOD1_HOME.tar.md5
You can see the issue attached:
you fail because you need a pit file..I can flash my normal firmware without a problem..but if I try a other one for example a provider one..it fails..for that we need the pit..and for that we need root..to extract it from the phone..and I don't won't to root ATM..
So how can I fix the device?
I tryng to use the Smart Switch PC but my device does not appear in the list to recovery emergency
I reinstalled the usb driver..

No, I just want to change the firmware version because the version that came with the phone does not have Portuguese as all language. The revice was 100% stock, just tried to flash another country firmware thru Odin and it has been bricked.

O.k the only way I know around this without finding your original firmware and flashing that, is to:
flash the firmware again, and wait until it fails again,
then hold vol down + power + home to get it to restart in to download mode again but keep odin open,
then flash CF autoroot .
then wait for the phone to reboot and it will install root then it will restart two more times on it own then should boot into the O.S.
(i take no responsibility if you mess up you device though but I have done this on more than one occasion and it always works for me)
I expect you could probably do this will another recovery(stock/twrp) instead of the CF autoroot one but have yet to try.
but you probably will be better off finding original firmware but you will not have Portuguese as you want.
Good luck with trying to fix your device

according to this you can use 925F version but I can not confirm my self as i don't have the device, If you don't mind rooting and tripping knox, I don't think you can do much more harm

I also went through this problem too, and this helped thank you
But also for another phone I had to flash using a different computer for this to work.

Maybe you can try each of the stock versions until you get the right one for your particular device. Also maybe a model number would help someone on here to identify what version you have, I don't know just throwing that out there.
My phone is G925i, and in the back says that it is made in Yateley, UK
Wich firmware you think I can try to flash?
I was trying the G925IDVU1AOD1_G925IZTO1AOD1_G925IDVU1AOD1 and then the phone has bee bricked.

I can't link to the page I go to because of my noob post count but its samsung-updates in google. There is a whole section with various G925i versions I'm sure you'll find it there.

[Q] galaxy s3 flash and boot issues

Hi Guys, in urgent need of help. I have a Samsung galaxy S3 I9300 that hangs on boot screen and freezes. The phone will not go into recovery mode at all just goes direct to download mode. I have tried to re-flash the stock firm ware using odin but have run into problems as initially it asked for a pit file and them once I got this fails and says cannot repartition. on top of this I believe the problem with odin may be a comms issue as when I try installing the device drivers when connecting phone to computer, this fails even though I have already downloaded and installed this. I have never rooted my phone but I do believe the phone is soft bricked?
so to summarize there is a comms issue from phone to pc and flash issue which are probably both connected.
any help is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance
What did you install to cause this bootloop?

no the phone has never been rooted can get to download mode but not recovery mode
Try the rescue firmware and pit from general forum. If this fails to flash then your emmc chip is damaged.
