Hi,
First of i want to say that i am not from Ray section, i own a Xperia S, but my sister has Xperia Ray, i upgraded her phone from GB. to ICS (4.1.B.0.587) but didn't know how to root it, after searching i found this on Arc section. i tried it and seems to work on Ray too. So here it goes. And i take no credit for this work, all credit goes to the makers.. And i don't know if this was posted here before but if so MODs. can delete it.
This tutorial is for 4.1.B.0.587 only!
1) flash this via flashtool : ST18i_4.1.A.0.562_kernel.ftf http://www.mediafire.com/?gbs29dw3tzx765k (thanks to zstoichev)
OBS : you might get errors after the reboot, don't worry, this is normal and step 3 will fix that.
2) Root your Ray with DooMLoRD's tool:
Unknown Sources and Debugging must be checked in phone settings. Before you open the .bat file.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601038
3) Flash the 4.1.B.0.587 kernel via. flashtool

4) Your done..

Thank you. I assume, it's also ok if the Xperia Ray is on stock ICS 4.0.4_4.1.B.0.587 already before starting your guide?

yea, it is ok.
Can you please upload just striped-down verisions of both kernels 4.0.3 (562) & 4.0.4 (587) (only *.sin files packed in ftf file)? In this case there is no need to DL 200+MB files wor me (already on ICS 4.0.4_4.1.B.0.587) so I only need kernel files in ftf not the whole ROM).
Thank you!

Great, thank you very much! Will upgrade my Ray to .587 & root it tonight!
EDIT: It seems, that there is only one version of kernel in ftf file, which one is it? 4.0.4 (.587)?

I think if you read the first post, you will see that i have posted two links, with instruction. The first one is (.562 kernal only), and the second one is (587 kernal only)... Hope that helps.

Yes it was, but only one of them, the new FW, and i uploaded only the kernal afterwards, when you asked.
Just to add another info to your guide:
Unknown Sources and Debugging and Mass Storage Mode (under Settings/Xperia/Connectivity) must be checked in phone settings. Before you open the .bat file...

Bro, Getting error as following when trying to flash ST18i_4.1.A.0.562_kernel.ftf file. Pls let me know who to resolve the issue.

Could not flash 587 kernel
Hi, I've run into a problem that's just been driving me crazy.
I've essentially been able to flash into build 562, and then run the root (which works), but when I try to flash to the 587 kernel, I keep checking my version and it always says 4.0.3 build 562 (paraphrasing here).
I've converted the 587 kernel.sin file into an ftf and ran it, but still it does not work.
Can I get some help please?
I'm probably newbing out on something, but everywhere I search people keep saying "flash to 587 kernel" but there was barely any information on what to do with the .sin files after I got them. I just want to confirm that I simply bundle them up using flashtool and flash that file right? but that doesnt work.
Phone is xperia ray st18a, bootloader is locked on Rogers.
Thanks for any help.
I also wanted to add, for flashing the kernel, i've tried using fastboot(adb) but could not select the kernel yet.
My attempts are flashing with a full 587 build but excluding everything but the kernel, and not wiping any data, I am still stuck at 562.

You have to flash the entire ftf file of .587 just as you would flash the .431 ftf. No changes at all. Also, kernel does not contain the system folder(ROM) but contains only the ramdisk and zImage binary. The system.sin file in your ftf package actually contains the "system" folder. Anyway, it is just safer to flash the entire package. Good luck!

Just place your ftf in firmwares folder, start flashtool and select the ftf from the list and click the flash button! Don't uncheck any options there and press flash. Then connect your phone in download mode and done! Don't worry about the kernel and all that stuff. Flashing a stock ftf should take care of all the problems in your phone.

Thanks guys,i've done it and it's working:laugh:!!!!!!
Thanks again!:fingers-crossed::victory:
I downloaded the Xperia Go Jelly Bean FTF but am unable to extract the system.sin and retrieve the system files. I followed this method but it did not work, is there another compression value I could use or another method?
Also I've tried that method on GB and ICS FTF's and it worked it is just this JB FTF which it does not work on.
Just open ftf file with winrar, extract sin files and then extract sin files using sin editor.
