I search the site for answers for this question but, unable to find the answers. I currently have a Motorolla Droid 3 on the big V which I was able set up to use my grandfathered unlimited data plan to tether to my Laptop when I was unable to use my wifi. I would like to up grade to a Samsung Galaxy 4 and I was wondering if I would be able to accomplish the same situation again? I do not want to pay an additional $30 for a new upgrade plan in addition to my phone's data plan - Ideas?
Thank You
Sorry for the bad post
I'd say the quickest option is theres an app for it on the play store. I personally use FoxFi until native tethering mod is available for it. FoxFi isn' bad.

Maybe I don't fully understand your question, but here are some facts that may help you:
1. If you take the S4 at a discount with a subsidy, you will loose your grandfathered unlimited plan. If you want the S4 and you want to keep unlimited data, you are looking at full retail for the S4, which is around $650-700.
2. Legitimate tethering is $30 per month, regardless of the device you tether with. If you run an app to tether and do not pay the $30 fee per month and VZW wishes to be difficult, you could lose your unlimited data.

I do not mind the pricing of the phone. The only pricing I cannot seem to comprehend is the $45 dollar data plan that is required.
The plan is 2GB, same as AT&T's $25 dollar plan... Even the iPhone gets this same plan.
Why jack up the price on the ATRIX?
Pretty sure that's only if you pick up tethering.

Is it possible to buy this phone off-contract?
If you're just getting the phone and nothing else (no tethering), does it still require you to change stuff on your account? (would I have to give up my unlimited data for some retarded ATT reason?)

This.
If you are getting the $45 data plan price from a certain article on theandroidblog.com - it is either a typo, or the writer just didn't know what he/she was talking about.
The official press release/article with the ATT exec stated in the applicable terms that a minimum data plan of $15 is required.
Think about it. I don't know anyone that would pay $45 for 2gb of data.

A couple of places already are advertising $599 without contract, so apparently it will be available just like every other phone.

AT&T is coding the Webtop app to require a tethering plan to use it on the AT&T network.
If you are ignoring the docks / Webtop use, you can ignore the tethering and keep your current plan.

This is all conjecture. I haven't seen anything that claims this on any news/blog/rumor site anywhere except people making weird claims on the forums.
The $45 tethering plan will get you an additional 2GB of data come February 13th for a total of 4GB.

Ok, so the article on The Android Blog was mistyped. That is a relief. a 45 dollar plan would deter anyone from the phone. $25 is better... if only I could keep my nonsmartphone Unlimited plan for $10. :/

You need to search a little harder. There are a lot of news sites reporting the pricing. Click HERE for one of them.
Under the section titled "Motorola ATRIX™ 4G" you find this sentence in the third paragraph "The first combines ATRIX 4G and the Motorola Laptop Dock for a promotional price of $499.99 after a two-year service contract and $100 mail-in-rebate after subscription to Data Pro smartphone data plan and tethering add on.". This indicates that to get the package deal you have to sign up for the Data Pro plan which is $25 and the tethering add on which is an additional $20.
If you go down to the quotes section under #3 you see this "Laptop Dock - Firefox browser use with AT&T Mobile Broadband requires Tethering Plan.
". #4 of the same section is indicating that tethered devices require the DataPro Tethering Plan (which at&t could also call using the HD dock tethering).
So all in all, if you're buying the phone by itself, you don't need to change your data plan if you currently have a smartphone data plan. If you are buying one of the docks, be cautious, as they will more than likely require you to change it.
Now here is my speculation on why at&t stated this pricing to news groups and not on their website. They are hoping that the pricing of the atrix will convince a large majority of the people that were excited about it to change their mind and purchase the inspire 4g that comes out next week. They will then release a statement on their website with "revised pricing". Again, my speculation.
Mike, that's still your interpretation of it all. I hear where you're coming from, but it isn't final yet.
ATT told me, both on their Facebook page and from a PR contact, that the HD dock doesn't require the tethering plan. I'm awaiting more detail before I do a more thorough write up on it.
Your last argument about changing pricing purposefully doesn't make much business sense. No one likes to operate in a manner in which they appear to be inept. Do they do it? Sure. Purposefully? I highly doubt it.

It doesn't require the tethering plan if you stay in Wifi mode when you're docked. Firefox browser use with AT&T Mobile Broadband requires Tethering Plan.

Again, that comment is preceded by "3 - Laptop Dock". When asked specifically about tethering and the HD dock (that also uses webtop and firefox), AT&T has said tethering is not required. I have inquired as to the reasoning behind this, and what it all really means. They have yet to respond with anything more than "we'll get back to you as soon as we can".
The reason I ask is this.. I am looking at buying an Android phone, I think. I am wondering that if I decide at a later date to no longer use the Droid and switch phone service, will my Droid become a lump of coal? OR can I use it like an IPod Touch? If I have loaded books on the Droid to use it as an ereader and I have pictures and music on there and games, will I be able to get to them with no monthly prepaid cell phone service? Can I still use the wi-fi feature? I am looking at going to Page Plus and I believe I can buy an Android phone that is branded Verizon and use it with them. For around $40.00 month I will have unlimited calls and text and I think 1gb data??
I was originally looking for a pre-paid cell plan that had a "hot spot" option. I live in the country and I was wanting to consolidate my gadgets. I was told there is no such creature and I can not even tether a phone on a pre-pay plan. Our best service up here is Verizon. I currently use a Virgin Mobile MiFi 2200 for my internet access that is GRANDFATHERED in on the $40.00 a month "unlimited" plan.
*What Android phone would be best for ereading, MP-3?
*Can I use it after I terminate phone service as an ereader, MP3 player, games, etc?
*Is there a PRE-PAID cell plan that provides hot-spot or tethering for Verizon coverage?
*If I sold my Virgin Mobile MiFi 2200 with the GRANDFATHERED $40.00 unlimited plan, how much do you think I can expect to get for it, they are harder and harder to find..??
I have no idea where this post needs to go but if it is in the wrong place I apologize and feel free to move me.

Yep... GSM/3G data isn't 100% necessary, all phone features can be used without it (or using WiFi).
All the phones are good to MP3, since all of them can use the same mp3 players. To ereading... pay attention to the resolution and screen size (higher = better).
About Verizon/Virgin stuff... sorry, I dunno
Thank you all for your replies. I know this seemed like a simple question, but when you are unsure.... Any opinions on phones? I am looking hard at the Droid X2 and I would be putting it on with Page Plus. I know it has to be Verizon and not been used as a pre-paid. Any input on the Novatel with the grandfathered $40.00 unlimited plan?
Currently have a 3 gb plan with ATT, no tethering. I dont plan to use it much except when working in remote areas which I do occasionally, and only really will need it to download files that the phone wont download/save, so I can have them on my computer if I need them.
This is my first time on ATT in years, and first Lumia. I know with Verizon, you could do it and not be charged, with some tweaks. Is it even possible on ATT?
As it stands now, they wont even let you turn on Internet Sharing unless you pay more. I dont ever intend to use 5 gb a month so I am not going to pay extra for it. I dont have a family so I am not going to get a Share plan. They need to allow you to use any data plan to tether, or hopefully there is a hack available to allow us to use our data to tether.
My honest recommendation is to go to the 4GB share plan. It's only $5 more than the cheapest individual plan with unlimited messages.
I am about to add another line on my "share everything" family plan. I am in need of Internet at my home, and would like to buy a 350$ line and do a assumption of liability account transfer. Problem is I am on a share everything and one line doesn't go out until 2015 (The line I'd like to put unlimited data on) So my question is. How would I go about adding another line and getting unlimited Internet on my s4? While only paying 2 lines.
Galaxy s4 - ends 2015
Galaxy S3 - contract ended can cancel anytime
New line unlimited data.
Any help would be nice, don't want to pay $400 for Internet setting a line up and Verizon find a way to rip it away of me. **I am trying not to let my s3 get the unlimited line** Could I also keep my same numbers? I am new about how all this works. And do you think it's a good investment? Or do you think verizon will rip the plan away from me in a few months either way for all grandfather users?

If you have an existing line with unlimited data, you'll want to go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2367734 - "How to upgrade without losing unlimited data".
If you don't, I don't think VZ is selling unlimited data plans any longer.
I am buying the unlimited line off ebay. Which would mean I wouldn't need a line and would get rid of my on where contracts up. How would I go about setting these 2 lines up where
1 has unlimited
No more share everything family plan
Keep numbers
And s4 Getz the unlimited plan (which its current one will not go out until 2015) example could I switch my s4 and s3 lines so my s4 is off contract and switch it with the newly unlimited plan putting my s3 on contract again till 2015? Get numbers changed back and somehow get off share everything and keep unlimited data line I purchased for my s4?

I suggest you read the thread that I pointed you to. It tells you how people have kept their existing unlimited service and transferred it to a new S4. I've not done this, so can't give you the real-world experience that you'll get from that thread. (And buying an unlimited line on eBay? I don't think so - if you buy a phone off of eBay that has unlimited service currently, you'll need to re-apply for service and won't get unlimited AFAIK.)

It is assumption of liability where I take access over another customers plan who originally had unlimited data. I'll read through the thread again see if I can find anything useful, seems like I'm going to have to go up to verizon to make sure they don't mess anything up and I won't waste $400 :/ Basically I need home internet and I'd rather pay 30 for Verizon each month since I get little over 45 mbp/s in my location.
If I am understanding correctly your wanting to merge the unlimited plan/line your getting on eBay with your share everything plan you currently have right?
I don't you can do that, you ate going to need to leave them separate.

Not 100% correct I want a nationwide plan and off share everything then accept the new link to avoid losing unlimited data. Just don't know the steps I'll go about doing it to get everything set up where my s4 which contracts not ended somehow get on the unlimited line and my s3 take over my s4 contract (if it's even possible) I'll probably end up paying contract early termination fee then getting the lines switched how I want them
I would double check.. I could be wrong I believe Amazon makes you keep it on line for 181 days.. Maybe I'm mistaken with another one.. I'm on the go now so further research is needed for sure..
is this true? If I upgrade my dumb line to the note 3 and then activate it, then after activation switch the note 3 to my unlimited line and dump the data plan on the dumb line, will amazon make me pay or no?
Hello Everyone,
I in the next few days I will be available for a device upgrade. I am going to go from a Rezound to S4 but I am concerned about my unlimited data.
I still have unlimited data on my plan, will upgrading my device change this?
I know now they are forcing everyone into tiered plans but I was hoping this would not change my plan. My wife and I are on a shared plan and she had to get a 2GB data plan when she got her Rhyme. I was grandfathered into my unlimited when I got my Rezound. I also still have the 500 txt messages for $5 a month which they do not offer anymore. I hope that does not get changed either
Thanks,
Ian...
if you get the phone subsidized you lose unlimited, if you have another line you can take and activate the new phone on then move the phone back to your unlimited line you should be good. just don't activate the subsidized device on the unlimited line or you are toast. at least I think that's how it all works.

You need to buy the phone outright at full price to retain your unlimited if you can't do the alternative line option corporal_hades pointed out. Verizon is offering financing to split the cost over 12 months with an additional $2 a month charge I believe.
I'm in the same boat you're in, I would like to upgrade, don't wanna give up my unlimited either.
Thanks for the information guys. Sometimes it seems like Verizon and the other carriers got us by the [email protected]
Don't forget the Moto X is $399, and the LG G2, HTC One, and Droid Ultra are $449 off contract now... just one more way to keep unlimited data.
http://www.droid-life.com/2013/08/2...-retail-with-no-hassle-use-the-iconic-portal/
It may also be worth it to decide if you really need unlimited data, or change your usage somewhat to get within 2 or 4 GB of data a month, you can save a lot if you can make some changes to your usage and get on WiFi more.
I know corporate stores will not do it, but one of the smaller Verizon stores I went into the other day said I could use my upgrade to get a new phone on my wife's life(alternate upgrade), then do a hardware swap to put the new phone on my line. It wouldn't hurt to ask a few of the stores around you to see if theyll do that.
She said if I did this I would be able to keep my unlimited.

I upgraded to the HTC one through best buy and was able to keep my unlimited plan. I upgraded the phone on my account that's already on the tiered data plan. Then switched the new phone to my unlimited line at the Verizon store. Best buy or Verizon didn't give me any problems doing it. Small price to pay to keep unlimited data.
