Will there be a way to tether without paying ATT more? - Nokia Lumia 920

Currently have a 3 gb plan with ATT, no tethering. I dont plan to use it much except when working in remote areas which I do occasionally, and only really will need it to download files that the phone wont download/save, so I can have them on my computer if I need them.
This is my first time on ATT in years, and first Lumia. I know with Verizon, you could do it and not be charged, with some tweaks. Is it even possible on ATT?
As it stands now, they wont even let you turn on Internet Sharing unless you pay more. I dont ever intend to use 5 gb a month so I am not going to pay extra for it. I dont have a family so I am not going to get a Share plan. They need to allow you to use any data plan to tether, or hopefully there is a hack available to allow us to use our data to tether.

My honest recommendation is to go to the 4GB share plan. It's only $5 more than the cheapest individual plan with unlimited messages.

What data plan?

Ok so I have a G1 that I have been using as my phone for data, calling, texting, etc. It is on a contract family plan.
I recently bought an HD2 and I put my sim in it, and only the calling works. The data bars show up, but I can't actually connect to the network.
I called TMO and they basically they said they have 4 data plans, android, smartphone, blackberry, and 1 other but whatever. Now... the HD2, with winMO, falls under the smartphone category, which is $25 a month for data. But... I have already experimented with putting Android on it and I think I'll probably want to leave android on in the future.
IF I switch my plan to "smartphone" (as it is currently on android), I will keep my plan at $25 a month, but lose my grandfathered android plan. Thus if I am ever to go back to an android phone, I would be losing... going up to 30/month.
But then its more confusing... is the HD2 running android actually an android? Data didnt seem to work on the 2.2 shell I was using... but maybe its just not working yet. I'll try the 2.1 I suppose...
WTF AM I SUPPOSED TO DO!?
eventually i'll switch to att or something that isnt so damn confusing
you should take a look in the US section mate maybe they will be able to help a little more
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=631
Your provider can only see your IMEI. The know what kind of handset you have but not what operating system you run.
Also you should price out just switching to a completely unlimited plan for instance, it was going to cost me $30 for the data plan, but only an increase of $35 to switch all the phones on my plan to the Unlimited Talk/text/web plan, so that was a no-brainer ....
I think their 4th plan btw is business VPN

[Q] Data Plans

I have T-Mobile. I bought an HD2 and disliked WinMo 6.5 so much I upgraded to the MyTouch 3G Slide. Now with all of this excitement with Android on HD2 I've been experimenting with a few builds, but have found that my data plan doesn't work with Android on HD2.
For T-Mobile, evidently there are 2 different data plans, both are unlimited data down for $30 a month, exactly the same, except one is for android and one is for windows. They also have a blackberry unlimited data plan.
I don't understand why there's this distinction between internet. It sounds ridiculous to me.
If i want to test out the new HD2 Android builds I have to do without data internet, and waste the $$$ I'm spending currently, unless I switch over.
I have a $24.99 data plan I got on special for the MyTouch slide. If I switch to windows I'll pay $30 and when I switch back to android it's another $30 and I lose my $24.99 discount.
I'm also looking at the Galaxy S (Vibrant) and thinking if I purchase that phone that I'll need to switch once AGAIN.
Is there anyway to trick T-Mobile into giving me a universal data plan that'll allow me to use/review/test multiple devices?
This is really frustrating.
I never heard of such thing but you got me wondering as I don't have a data plan yet although I'm planning to by the end of the week.
where it surprises me is that with all the Android builds being developed for the HD2 no one has ever mentioned the same problem.
I wouldn't stay with that operator if they draw the line there.
Companies like that should be sued! Damn, these days everyone is restricting everything.. It's like China is relocating (sorry if I harm readers, but I dislike the principles of the chinese ideals). I think democracy, in it's purest form, letting customers (the people) decide, is the best way to achieve your goals. And not by blocking, restricting, and deciding for the ppl.
Think they are gonna lose much clients over this. But hey, that's their choice.
ok well I called TMOUS CC and made the changes to my plans.
the girl on the phone basically did confirm that there is a WinMo data plan and an Android data plan but there is no difference in the price and there is no activation fee, even later if I need to switch (at least since I don't have a contract-based plan)
She didn't tell me explicitly but the trick I guess is only to change the APN on the phone as I read a lot on XDA to get the phone to have internet. Literally she said I can find the trick by googling it... see here
I'll update later if it works since I'm waiting for the signal right now :|
edit: well it didn't take long, I now have internet (3G/HSPA) and didn't have to do anything in particular (APN is epc.tmobile.com)
Awesome! I'm getting 2908 kbps down right now. I didn't have to switch over, and I'm only paying $24.99 a month for this!!
Fracking sweet!

[Q] Dropping Data Plan

So, I'm thinking about dropping my $30/month unlimited data plan with Verizon. I love my eris, but I really only use data to check email and facebook a few times a day, and maybe a few other things like checking the weather, google calendar, etc. It's nice, but I feel like it's not worth paying $30 per month for the little amount that I use it.
Is there any way to drop my data plan while keeping my eris (without incurring data fees of course)? I'd like to keep the ability to make calls, send texts (including MMS), but nothing else. Is this possible?

I'm not sure you have the option to not have the $30 a month charge with any smartphone on vz.

As far as I know, if you activate what is considered a smartphone on a Verizon plan, the data plan is an automatic that cannot be removed. You'd have to switch to a feature phone (and, unfortunately, some of those require a $10 data plan themselves.)
If you are on a month-to-month you could try switching your number to one of the pre-paid services, like Cricket or something.
Ah, that's what I figured.
I might just switch back to a dumbphone and use my eris as wifi-only since I'm around wifi 90% of the time.
You need a data plan not the 30$ data plan, get the cheaper one and then you can check web on the go

Right now there is no cheaper plan. There was a brief time that they had a capped plan at $15 (I think), but right now, as of January, smartphones are $30 for unlimited data.
well I'm not sure, but right now I have a 150 MB plan for the $15 a month. I'm with Verizon and honestly I don't even use that much data monthly. I'm pretty sure if you drop them a line you could get it, it's a good savings

Yeah, that's the plan I have and that has indeed been dropped, Verizon no longer offers it except for us legacy users who happened to still have it. I usually come right up to the cap each month but it's sufficient for everything I need (I usually have wifi anyway). Hopefully Verizon will offer up some alternative plans at some point but as far as I know nothing is coming up soon.
So, no, you can't go data-less on verizon. I actually carried around my eris and my old feature phone for ages before I decided to pay for a data plan. It's annoying, but the eris works great for a wifi-only device.
yeah, a data-less eris sounds like a good idea, i'm at wifi 90% of the time anyway. i'm really just replying here cause i wanna help this guy with bugs on his new gingerbread rom and i can't post there until i get 10 of these
I heard a rumor at some point that
Verizon was doing away with the unlimited data plan in favor of a tiered option system. Has anyone heard anything about this? I would definitely switch to a capped option if it was cheaper, I don't think I've ever come close to a single GB of data usage and I never turn wifi on.

Yes, Verizon is introducing tiered data plans some time this summer.
verizon-targeting-mid-summer-for-tiered-data-plans
Yup that's it. Now I wonder what the options are going to be... Magic answer forum go!

My VZW plan has a generous 22% corporate discount for voice & unlimited web data and should be grandfathered with these new tiered pricing - nice, right. But, it will be removed if and when a new/replacement device is activated. It's one of the better deal still available for about $25/mo. w. taxes & fees for data itself, oh well - plenty of discussions over at HoFo ....
I used between 250 MB and 500 MB data monthly on the HTC Eris w. FroShedYo ROM (less w. the unlocked & HTC Ozone Global on 3VO ROM) - since I take advtange of a much faster secured wifi broadband link @ home whenever possible with marginal 3G coverage. While traveling, I did come close to using about 1 GB data without tethering and nice to not worry about going over any capped limits.
Looking at both PagePlus Cellular and MetroPCS, it will be a "challenge" to use their talk & text/limited web data plan without going over (capped at 100 MB or 200 MB) but it will be cheaper overall if I turnoff all the widgets & background apps, email checking, etc. on the Eris & keep tabs of all data downloads. The Ozone is now used with an AT&T Gophone prepaid Sim on GSM network as a backup line, and with limited usage - I get by with using 20 to 50 MB data each month.
I've not renewed/extended my VZW plan since becoming eligible again for annual equipment upgrade - with the trends for locking down the bootloader(s) and disabling the firmware (i.e. Droid X Global) - seriously debating switching to GSM for a broader selection of phones - and easily swapping phone by inserting the Sim card (excluding the iPhone, of course).

[Q] Grandfather Tethering V2

I search the site for answers for this question but, unable to find the answers. I currently have a Motorolla Droid 3 on the big V which I was able set up to use my grandfathered unlimited data plan to tether to my Laptop when I was unable to use my wifi. I would like to up grade to a Samsung Galaxy 4 and I was wondering if I would be able to accomplish the same situation again? I do not want to pay an additional $30 for a new upgrade plan in addition to my phone's data plan - Ideas?
Thank You
Sorry for the bad post
I'd say the quickest option is theres an app for it on the play store. I personally use FoxFi until native tethering mod is available for it. FoxFi isn' bad.

Maybe I don't fully understand your question, but here are some facts that may help you:
1. If you take the S4 at a discount with a subsidy, you will loose your grandfathered unlimited plan. If you want the S4 and you want to keep unlimited data, you are looking at full retail for the S4, which is around $650-700.
2. Legitimate tethering is $30 per month, regardless of the device you tether with. If you run an app to tether and do not pay the $30 fee per month and VZW wishes to be difficult, you could lose your unlimited data.

[Q] Getting a Galaxy S5 but why keep the unlimited data?

I paid full price last year for my 16 gig S4 to keep my unlimited data but it really no use since there is no wireless tether working with ME7.
The phone is rooted.
Now paying $90 with 450 mins, 250 texts and unlimited data.
So I can pay $700 estimated for a 32gig S5 and keep the above plan or
Sign contract pay $200 and have unlimited talk and text and 2 gig of data but be able to tether with the verizon app with a monthly cost of $65 or $75 plus the taxes.
Seems that's the way to go.
Am I wrong? Please explain why.

It all depends on how much data you use, I use about 5gb-12gb on my unlimited plan each month so it is much more worth it for me to keep my unlimited plan. Keep in mind that once you leave you can't come back.
Please explain how you can use that much data on just the phone?
I am using under 1 gig now since I can't tether but when I could tether I never exceeded 2 gig.

I use 12+ gigs monthly as well. Data is EASILY consumed by me. Some months i've been up to 40gigs.
I flash about 5-10 Roms a month. I download the ROMS on my phone, Install and let it restore, downloading all my apps. That alone takes about 6-10 gigs a month.
I have google Music service $7.99. I chucked my sat radio and stream music every time i use my car.
As a programmer, i stream music while i'm at work about 4hrs a day (non meetings).
I play various games and take alot of photos. because of unlimited, i let my photos auto upload up to the cloud.
We have a home in Miami and drive down to Miami about 4 times a year and use my phone as a hotspot for my kids all the way down and while at the house.
Netflix eats up alot when on the road.
I also have a linksys router that houses a ton of our pics, movies, etc... I use es file explorer to stream my entire collection of movies and photos as needed.
I also have a slingbox...
I also let it sync my work email (since data is not an issue), some attachments can really consume data.
Believe it or not, i don't use video chat services like skype.. But as you can see, there are tons of ways to get data up there. I think because of unlimited, it's allowed me to explore my phone and really utilize it.
I did my upgrade through the Verizon website, got bogo s4, and kept my Alltel unlimited data.

I'm really missing the appeal in the S5...Are people in the dev community generally interested in this device? Kind of curious...

I like the improved camera with the isocell sensor and 4k video and a few other new features, water and dust seals, fingerprint scanner etc.
and
My S4 has a problem where it freezes at the verizon screen on restart. it's a random thing but have not been able to fix it.
No tethering on ME7? Here is what you an do. Update to MK2, Root phone, install safestrap, install another rom (Hyper) on slot 1 and you're good to go. Or keep it stock rooted and go here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2512981) to tether unlock.
We dropped unlimited a year ago. My wife was on an old blackberry era 300MB plan, and we just could not make it means sense for me to pay full price for the phone and her on a crappy plan to keep unlimited data that I never used. We went over a bit at Christmas when we drove from Texas to Ohio... mostly kids tethering to play hay day. Once in like two years that we went over 2 gb and now we have 3. I don't watch movies on mobile devices (I am just never that desperate for entertainment). I don't stream music...my commute is 10 minutes and I am mostly in meetings all day. And even if I did want to at work, we have guest Wi-Fi. Basically, if I am away from Wi-Fi, I probably an doing something other than dinking with my phone.

For me its mostly my wife that uses the data, her biggest killer is Netflix, and her motto is, if I am paying for the data, I am going to use it and take full advantage of it.
I cant imagine giving up unlimited data. I paid 700 for my s4 retail price to keep it. So if I upgrade I think swappa may be my next step. Being able to tether anywhere is a sense of freedom . Just like a few posts up its nice to download roms and let Google restore apps without worrying about it. Believe it or not thats alot of data itself. 15 - 20 gigs a month for me since I'm always tethering for my kids lol

Updating apps, Netflix, YouTube, Skype, etc.
4G is near pointless with a 2GB plan.
Now if you switched to a 2 GB plan and you got rollover data I would consider it, but there is no telling what I will be up to, I may need a ton of data one month, and don't want to be restricted to just 2 GB
None of you people have WiFi available?
I use about .05 GB monthly because I am almost always on WiFi. Where I live it's difficult to find a place of business w/o free WiFi so I have to guess you folks talking about huge amounts of data don't have WiFi available?
NOTE: I solved some of my data problems by buying cheap wireless routers at swap meets, etc. and just giving them to people who I visit often (and installing them!) Since used, good quality routers are readily available for $20 or less it's cheaper than paying data charges.
If I'm paying for unlimited data why shouldn't I use it, WiFi or no. So far this month I'm at 100 gig on my line, 30 gig on my wife's line. That's about average usage for us.

Maybe it's time to switch to t-mobile? Unlimited data talk and text for $80? Anyone have experience with t-mobile?
On mk2 and I can tether just fine. Foxfi works like a champ. Enables the builtin hotspot without issue (i have unlimited data, no tethering on the plan mind you).

I think I will wait to see if FoxFi works on the GS5 when I get it before I buy the key.

These amounts are hard to believe.
I think VZ would shut someone down if they were using 100Gig per month unlimited or not.
Soon someone will claim they use 2TB per month, LOL.
