Someone rescue me!! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright so my sister has a white Samsung Galaxy S2 (sch-r760) and it does not charge! We connect the battery to her friends phone and it recognizes the battery but on her phone it doesnt! She attempted to charge her phone with her friends battery and it worked so if anyone knows why this battery charges with her friends phone but not with hers? Can it be the phone or a software update?? She just recently got this phone too

Seems like hardware. Even if it isn't, I would still return it because if you have problems already, it's crap.
Not sure though if this is the right section for this version of the S2...

could be IC hardware that broken, like mine..
the only way to repair it is replace the mainboard with the new one..

1) Say hi to your sister for me.
2) If it's brand new, tell her to return it.
3) Clean usb for dust.
4) Change usb flex.
5) Repair center.
Sent from the little guy

If it's new with warranty, take it to the service center.

The USB board (the likely culpret) is TOTALLY separate to the main board and can be picked up for under £10 (unlike the main board which costs 7 or 8 times that)...

[Q] Repair charges from Samsung for Bricked Phones ?

Hey Guys,
I recently Bricked my Unlocked Samsung Vibrant phone while uploading a Custom ROM. The phone is now such that it wouldn't show anything on the screen.
The recovery mode was not available but the Download mode sure was. But to flash a Stock ROM through Odin it should go into the Download mode at least, but that ain't happening at all, because there is nothing showing up on the screen and neither is the keypad lighting up.
I have tried numerous methods of booting up but none of them work as Nothing Shows up on the screen. Also when I insert the battery inside the Phone Heats Up (Not the Battery) like it would while one was using it.
I figured out, from the forum, that the problem must be of a corrupted bootloader and that the USB will not detect anything as it has no support from the bootloader.
I stay in India and my phone is past the 30 Day Replacement phase. I gave this phone to the Samsung Service Centre in my country and they said that, No Support is available for Vibrant here and the only way to make this phone work is to install a new Galaxy S I9000 Motherboard instead of Vibrant's one for around 300$.
I can send my phone to the US, but the question I want to ask is,
1) Since my phone is Rooted and I tried to Flash a Custom ROM onto it, it is well out of the Warranty. Will Samsung Notice this and charge me out of the Warranty for repairing ?
2) What is the Charges that I will incur from Samsung for Unbricking my Rooted Phone and what will there procedure involve ?
3) A guy in my town has a Riff Box JTag and he says that he might be able to boot my phone for a mere 20$. I will be voiding my Warranty if I hand over the Phone to him. What are the skill levels required for Booting through Jtag apart from the very skill of Precise Soldering ? Should I hand over my phone to him for a cheaper alternative for Unbricking than sending it over to US getting charged by Samsung and paying for the phone to be shipped back ?
Thank You for any Help and Hope you provide.
Any Help is appreciated guys.

Samsung has a live tech support chat
you can ask your question directly http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SGH-T959ZKATMB?
On the other hand, you can score a second hand Vibrant for less than $300 here in the States, I am not sure about market in India.
they wont charge anything.
I've hard bricked my phone to where nothing would turn on. sent it in, and got a replacement (with the new GPS antenna LOL) and only had to pay for the expedited shipping.

Since I am have rooted my phone and flashed a Custom ROM and had a bad bootloader which Bricked my Vibrant, will they notice the root ? If Yes, then what will they charge me out of the warranty for booting my Vibrant ?

if you were to see the contents I had on my internal SD, yeah....I'd be in debt. LOL.
custom kernels built by me, kangklick, JAC, Eugene
Roms built by TW, and Eugene, CM6 built by me...
They will most likely see that it wont turn on with a new battery, check the water damage sticker, and then take out the good parts, reuse, and dis-guard the rest.
Did you really tried getting into Download mode right?
take battery off, press vol + And - at the same time (do not touch power)
insert the battery.
if it does not come up, let the volume keys go and do it again.......

Hi guys, I bricked my phone...phone does not enter the download mode or th recovery. The phone will enter the batt screen (the one that comes on when you charge your phone when it is off) and turn off (looping). I had totally modded it and am getting my replacement. When I send in my phone:
1) will they figure out I rooted?
2) Charge me for the replacement that they sent in?
Thanks in advance...

From what I have read over the forums, if they send you a replacement and if they come to learn after that you have fiddled with the software, they charge you for the replacement too, i.e., the whole 600$ even when you have given them your old phone. So you just have to thank your stars, if they don't.
I would suggest you inquire in advance everything about the replacement procedure from Bell.

If I flash to an eclair (I told them it got screwed while updating to 2.2) through ODIN. will they know I rooted?? I ask this coz I heard if you flash with ODIN it supercedes everything (even the root and superuser).

[Q] Replacing Motherboard

My S2 recently stopped taking charge and I was unable to turn it on at all. Tried the usual stuff, different battery/charger etc and nothing worked. Sent it back to Samsung who noticed it was rooted and told me to do one basically, wanted $400 to repair it because the warranty was void.
They did however tell me that the main board was fried, so got myself a replacement off ebay and have just fitted it but still nothing. Just wondering if I replace the main board with a new one, will I have to re-flash Android somehow? If so, how would I go about doing that? USB Jig?
Thanks in advance!
sounds fishy,
how would they no its rooted if the main board is fried.
but if youre 100$ sure you got a working board, you might have a dead screen or something els thats not working, cause I can power on the board itself, without the screen ..

Mmm, I don't know about that. He would have heard the boot sound. Also he should be able to connect to a PC.
Sorry, scrap this. I just had a COMPLETE blonde moment. Opened it all up and managed to put in the same faulty motherboard haha! I have no idea how they knew it was rooted by the way, they did though and they were having none of the warranty repair. So bought myself a new motherboard AND the Pro Tech Toolkit off iFixit for half the price Samsung wanted to repair it. So here's a big **** you to Samsung.
In answer to my own question, no you don't need to flash Android to the motherboard, it's already pre-installed.
Thread my be closed if you so wish, solved.
So how much did the total repair come to?.

Well you could do it a lot cheaper than I did, I went a bit overkill buying that toolkit. http://www.ifixit.com/Tools/Pro-Tech-Toolkit/IF145-072
But the new board cost me about 150 off ebay and the toolkit was 60 so 210 in total.
Nothing wrong with buying that toolkit-will be handy for future.
Strange though how they managed to suss out it was rooted.
Yeah, I have no idea how they managed it. There must, be something at low level that flags it.

Broken USB Port

Hey guys,
my usb port is starting to act wierd. It refuses to charge unless at a certain angle. It seems it got damaged with all the plug/unplug it went through during its life.
I know that Samsung "Might " exchange the phone rooted, but i rather restore it to factory ICS from bell as i will be doing the exchange through them and they can be assholes sometimes.
What is the best way to completely restore it to stock to avoid any issues?
Use the samsung Kies method, check the general section to find it, remember to wipe flash counter first. If you can't find it let me know

USB Stopped working completely. Phone died so I braught it to the Samsung Service Center.
They initally refused to service it and delcared it out of warranty because i Rooted the phone. It took 1 hour of yelling so they could fix the DAMN usb port....
R.I.P. little note.....(sniff)
well they replaced the USB board apparently and restored it to Stock ICS 4.04
They told me that if i root my phone again, they will not repair it .
However i went into download mode, and still see my original 4 flash counts
Now, before I re-restore to Black Star, How Can i Backup The original Bell Recovery firmware?
If this is was an AT&T phone, you would have had a better experience at the AT&T device support center.
I honestly had this problem and JUST came back from the AT&T device service center with a BRAND NEW NOTE. SO, first off, I did have my phone rooted w/ cyanogenmod. I thought this would be a problem, so with what little battery power I had left, I downloaded the last zip on this webpage from the device (USB doesn't work, remember?) and wiped everything and flashed that stock rom. Went to the AT&T device support center right here in San Francisco. Told them what was wrong, they took a look at it, plugged it in, did what I think was a water damage check, and proceeded to give me a new note. I didn't even have to sign anything.
I was a little worried at first, because I bought my phone from a dude on craigslist back in March, but apparently this didn't matter. So, if you're on AT&T they did a surprisingly AWESOME job switching out my phone for one with a functioning USB port. Best of luck to you if you attempt to do this, the dude did do a cursory investigation of my phone's software, which I don't think was very thorough, but likely didn't notice that it was a cleaned up rom (aka, no att crap on it).
I don't get why Samsung thinks rom flashing has anything to do with physical hardware. Kind of unlightened? Or just looking for any excuse not to provide that repair? I'm sorry to hear they are so lame.
I bought my note from craigslist and 2 months later my charging port was having the same issues, I don't have att, but found the charging port on ebay for $20 and replaced it my self, easy.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
it was a "authorized" service center.
What strikes me is the fact that they told me if i bring it rooted they wont fix it again, but they didnt reset the trip counter....
Exactly what rangercaptain says. Samsung should, if they don't already, pride themselves in the fact that when someone buys there device, it should be theres to discover, not forced/told what they have to use for an OS or have limitations in general. I was lucky enough to discover this accidentally. This now is a HUGE, perhaps only factor in my future purchases. That is after all what Google Android is about to me, freedom. Creativity stumbles in its absence. I do however wish there was a dedicated charge port. Or that going with a wimpy micro usb over even the mini usb was a bad thing. This being said, devices that last longer don't sell new ones well.
Sounds to me as the OP states certain angle to charge....Happens to me on all my devices, the cause, lucky for me has always been faulty/cheap worn out cords. I know have a pile of them on hand. Best luck and quality I find works for me are BlackBerry cords.

[Q] [PROBLEM] Mainboard of SGS2 isn't working (fried?)

Hi everyone,
I'm writing here cause I've got a really big problem with my lovely Samsung Galaxy S II: the mainboard stopped working.
The really big problem is that I don't know the real problem.
I have two SGS2, one black and one white. The one with motherboard issues is the black one.
I've tried to put the black's motherboard in the white phone but the phone doesn't turn on, neither with a full charged battery (I have something like 4 or 5 batteries for my Galaxys, so i'm really sure that isn't a battery problem) and neither with the usb jig (again, I'm sure that the jig works cause I've tried it on the white one and it works).
I've also tried to put the white's motherboard into the black phone and everything works well, so the black phone's mainboard is broken.
Here comes the problem: I don't know what it happened to the mainboard to break, the last time I saw my phone alive was when I looked at the time on the phone (I mean lockscreen, you know) and after I looked at it it turned off and never woke up (turn on).
Since my hardware skills are quitly good I tried to have a look at the mainboard itself, but it doesn't look damaged in any way, neither fired.
My first worry is about data, I've did a full backup of my phone 2 or 3 days past the damage but I wanna try to recover the latest data that are still stored on my phone.
I've also thought about order a new motherboard from ebay, but the data is still on the broken one, so it will be unuseful.
I attached to this post also 2 photos of the "broken" mainboard (front and rear, taken with my other Galaxy S2)
Any help will be appriced
Thank you in advance guys, I hope to recover data / fix my phone!
Couple of things:
1) This belongs in Q&A
2) What ROM where you on at the time it went off? What kernel?
3) You could try jTAG, 25-50 bucks.
4) The reason why it would be a guessing game, maybe some nasty Sleep Of Death, like those happening with the SIII.
5) Ask the mods to move this thread.
Sent from the little guy
Thank you gastonw!
I read about the JTAG but didn't understood if I only need the JTAG itself (I mean, this => h t t p : / / w w w . gsm-technology .com/multicom/pimg/sam_i9100_400B.jpg ), or if I also need the RiffBox (what's the difference?)
Anyway, when it turned off the ROM on the phone was CyanogenMod 10.1 - 20130703 - NIGHTLY (obviously i9100)
Sleep of Death? I read about this, and the problem is: how can I determinate if the phone wakes up when I insert battery and Jig? I tought to use a voltmeter, but I really don't know where to place to avoid also short circuits.
About the thing to move the thread, yeah, sorry, I noticed just after I created the post. So, If any mod would read this, please move to Q&A
You can do both as you know your hardware.
Of course the smart choice here is to pay for the service instead of becoming the service by purxhacing the riffbox.
Before you do that hit the download combo without the battery (ask for an extra hand) and re insert it while your still hitting it.
When you plug it, does it get hot near the camera?

Again, thank you gastonw! I tried todo the download combo (VOL DOWN + POWER + HOME) while inserting the battery and nothing happened, near the camera the temperature is the same as before.
Anyway I still didn't understood a thing: could the JTAG operate itself or I need also to buy the Riffbox?
jtag is the service the riffbox (and such) provides.

I ordered a Riffbox from Ebay (fonefunshop, an official reseller).
I didn't wanted to pay for a service like "send your phone and we'll revive it" because I don't trust them and I don't want my data to be see from others.
Thank you for your support gastonw, I'll let you know when the RiffBox arrives if it works
Please do, if you can get the hang of it you will be able to help other people plus -maybe- get a buck or two
