Hey everyone! Looks like Google rolled out a silent update a few weeks ago that effected multiple HTC devices. Whenever you use any location based apps, it would alert you with a message stating something similar to "please turn on location services..".
A few confirmed apps affected include:
Google Now
Google Maps
Facebook (when checking in)
Instagram (when tagging location)
etc..
The fix?
Download this updated version of the Google Play Store, install, and reboot your phone. That's it!
http://db.tt/hCsRR5PY
No, you don't have to be rooted, but you will need to enable "Unknown Sources" in your settings before installing.
If this helps, please give me kudos

Hello,
I am using HTC explorer (Android 2.3.5) for about a month now. For the past 2 days I am facing a strange problem. I am unable to download apps from Google Play via internet pass through. I am able to browse the internet but when I try to download any application, a grey bar appears saying "Waiting for network" and it never ends. I am able to download the same apps through Wifii. I tried all the possible solutions to make this work (hard reset, soft reset), but found no luck. I changed the default 2GB sd card with a 4GB sd card same days back. But even after that I was able to download via internet pass through. This is little strange. Can somebody help me in this respect.
Thanks in advance,

Try to clear cache and data of play store
I'm having the same issue. I've used internet pass through on my EVO 3D for quite a while, thinking about changing plans to less data. Pass through works fine for almost everything, but suddenly won't download Google Play updates. But if I clear data and cache, it then thinks there is no update. It is as though it updated, but doesn't recognize it as having completed. The one thing I haven't been able to update ever by PT is new maps for CoPilot Live. It absolutely insists on wi-fi.
Clear data from google services framework, fixes most problems with Google apps.

Thanks for your replies guys!!!
I cleared the data of google services framework, play store but still the problem exists. I am still unable to download from play store via internet pass through
SOLUTION
Hi there,
go to settings> applications>put a tick mark or select unknown sources . Ur problem wil be solved.
Thanks G_IVAR, for posting a reply. But the option is already checked. The only way is working is to settings--> applications--> Manage applications--> Google Play Store and click on Uninstall updates. The Play Store disappears on the phone and the Old market appears. Now when i try to download any application (with internet pass through), the download starts (making me happy) and disappears within 5-10 seconds. When I check my phone this time, again Google Play appears instead of Market. I think the Google guys have made something so that the market apps doesn't download with internet pass through (with a USB cable).

It worked for me too but I have to uninstall the updates on Google Play Store everytime
This probably won't help, but I'm curious. What happens if you go to Google Play via a PC and try to do a remote install that way?

we should contact google support.i mailed them this was there reply but it didn't work
Thanks for contacting us about this issue- it sounds like you're having general connectivity issues. It's frustrating for us when users have problems with connectivity, because there is only so much we can do before you need to contact your service provider. However, I'd like you to try the following troubleshooting steps to resolve this quickly:
- Reboot your device
- Confirm that the app Google Authenticator is up to date - visit Google Play, then tap My Apps to see if you have an update available
- Sign in and out of Google Talk to restore connection to our servers:
1. Go to your device’s app launcher, and press the Talk app
2. If you’re already signed into Talk, press Menu, and then touch Sign out
3. Launch Talk again to sign in (if you are unable to sign in, please let me know)
- Clear the cache of the Google Play Store app (Settings > Applications > Manage applications > All > Play Store > Clear cache)
- If you're using WiFi, ensure firewalls are not blocking access to ports required for Google Play (TCP and UDP 5228)
- Confirm that there is strong connectivity on your device, and contact your mobile service provider if you aren't connected
If none of these steps resolve the issue, please let me know, and I will continue to investigate the problem - any other detail you can provide about the issue and how/when it occurs will be extremely helpful. Have an excellent day.
Hi there,
I'm using a Sensation, and also having this problem. It's really most annoying.Any idea how widespread this problem is, or if it is something that Google has disabled deliberately?
Me too... but I'm able to download using JellyBean... but ICS can't..

Hi,
I have a Google Apps free account and I'm trying to install Google Device Policy on my CM9 Samsung Galaxy S2. When trying to allow permissions for the application, most accounts make the Device Policy app crash, but I managed to get have one give me the permission dialog. I clicked accept but then I get an error message saying "Error encountered while registering the device. Please try again later".
Does anyone else use the Google Device Policy app? I'd really appreciate if someone has a fix for this because it's such an awesome feature to be able to track a lost phone and remotely wipe data.
Thanks!
Maybe someone can give it a shot and see if it works for him?
I restored the stock ROM and it does not work either. There isn't the annoying crash when trying to get the permissions but there is still the "Error registering the device" thing.
Anyone know a solution?
same problem....

I solved my problem in google under settings - manage this domain - settings - mobile (on the left) - and check the box to "Enable Android Sync for users". Simple thing, but you have to search to find the option. Good luck!

I've looked at my settings and "Android sync" is enabled and I've added the proper Google Apps account into my Android 4.1.1 device but the same error message comes up "Error encountered while registering the device"
FYI, my account is a "Google Apps" account but not a "Google Apps for business" account, could it be the problem?
Any thoughts?
Thank you all for your time,
highmighty
Works on "Google Apps FOR BUSINESS" only, not working on "Google Apps".
Lost 10 minutes of my precious time after I was informed about this app.

Hey guys, i recently tried grabbing the new Google Play Services apk to get Trusted Locations. It installs and most things work but after installing gmail now errors out every time I open it with "Unknown Google Play Services Error". Anyone else getting the same?
I get the same thing but Google inbox works ok so I hadn't really noticed it. I don't see a way to rollback to a different version of the play services though.

You have to deactivate "Android Device Manager" as a device administrator and then go into Settings -> Apps -> All and then find Google Play Services and hit Uninstall Updates
It looks like there are certain versions needed and the one for the N9 hasnt been posted yet
Yeah you will have to wait for it to hit your device or watch this thread

Waiting for the 748 version to try
Issue resolved itself
Hey there,
if you are still a regular user of the good old GTab 10.1 - like my GF - you might have encountered this issue recently too.
Google has updated and does remotely update your Play Store Service to a version which is not supported anymore by this tablet, or the other way around, the app does not support our hardware anymore and the service keeps crashing and crashing, same with Chrome and Maps as far as I know.
Well I first thought something is wrong with the ROM or Gapps so I looked for a recent unofficial ROM and found the [ROM][Unofficial][AOSP] Android 7.1.1 Nougat and there was stated:
Incompatible apps:
The following apps no longer support the hardware in this tablet. They will not work on any ROM for this device. There is no hack to make them work.
Apps that do not support this tablet:
Chrome 50+
Google Translate
Gboard 6.0.79
Maps 9.45
Google Play services 10.2
Apps based on Unity 5 engine
Last known compatible versions:
Chrome 49.0
Gboard 6.0.69
Maps 9.44
Google Play services 10.0.84

Well I had a backup from 2015 on the GTab and restored it but immediately the service updated itself and it began to crash.
In the Above mentioned thread there was some1 writing
This worked for me (for disabling Google Play Services auto-update) :
- disconnect wifi
- disable auto-update apps in Google Play Store
- in Settings / Apps, GPS, 3-dots menu, Uninstall updates, so back to v10.0.84....
- in App info, Data usage, disable Unrestricted data usage
- reconnect wifi
Now GPS doesn't seem to auto-update anymore.
Best regards

Sadly this does not seem to work for me. I was thinking about Titanium backup to freeze the GPS but I am not sure if this will work.
Also flashed manually a GApps Version which had the older play store in it but also got overwritten immediately
So have you encountered this issue and how did you fix it?
Thanks
Did you make sure to turn off auto update apps in Google Play store? That combined with the other steps listed worked for me and my Galaxy Tab play services has NOT updated... And it works fine, though it still occasionally crashes, but not every ten secons.
Thank you for this information. I've been banging my head on the wall for a few days while searching the cause.
I'm facing exactly the same problem.
I don't have the "Disable unrestricted data usage" option in Google Play Services Data Usage.
There is only "Restrict app background data", but this one doesn't prevent GPS from update.
In the next day GPS updates automatically to version 10.2.* and crushes.
have you tried this ? : https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/delete-disable-downgrade-prevent-update-t3091832
tl;dr create 2 folders at /data/app : com.google.android.gms-1.apk and com.google.android.gms-2.apk . Done that today, but still need to test on the long run.
I tried this and it worked - for a couple of days. Now some apps are complaining they are unlicensed
Well I was able to disable GPS completely but now, as stated above, apps are complaining and there are now no app updates availible and the complete store is disabled, not really what I was looking for. But I guess Google now really fu:cyclops::cyclops:ed us. So are we done with this tablet or what?

My p4wifi is working fine on the latest 7.1.1 ROM and the older GApps. Disabling automatic updates in the Play Store keeps regular apps from updating when we don't want them to.
Disabling the background data settings in Apps.... Google Play Services... Settings keeps GPS from updating itself.
(I'm not sure that I made the settings change in Developer Options or not.)
It might be worth reading through the posts in the 7.1.1 thread.
I can afford a new tablet, but cannot find anything this size that keeps the ROM current with Google releases.
(I also do not play games or need esoteric applications.)
Don't give up yet.
Is this a solution?
https://www.xda-developers.com/unshackle-your-device-from-the-google-play-store-with-apkupdater/
I also deleted cacche from Gps & blocked the internet connection wth Afwall.
Tried the solution of lebaronrouge in 5.1.1 rom topic.
Seems to work.
Two weeks ago, this paradox thing happened to our cellphone - the messaging system app while still installed and running properly, disappeared from the Play Store app list and as you can see from the attached screenshot, it now displays a message that "is no longer compatible with your device - contact the developer " and all this on an Android One mobile! I have confirmed this on 3 friends' mobiles and other user reviews in the app's play store page. Clear cache & data of the store as we usually do didn't help, so what I am asking is you check on your phones as well and propose any fixes (?) for this really awkward problem
Needless to say, even if there are app updates, we can't install them from the store as long as this message appears in the app page
I experienced the same. I side loaded the latest apk and it was good.
Problem solved as suddenly as it appeared on the Play store app description. Incompatible warning message disappeared, app updated automatically, all back to normal
Of course, we will never learn what caused all this mess
I think it had something to do with the new messaging feature they released. The ability to see if the other person is typing, seen and sent confirmations, etc.
