[Q] I9100/Thinkbridge/JB422/Stable2/ GApps not working - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I am in trouble with a newly flashed galaxy s2 i9100.
The rom is ThinkBridge JB4.2.2 -Stable 2 as described in this threadhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2163816
Although new to this flashing game, I gather the problem lies with the Google Apps not starting as they are supposed to.
As consequence, the Google Play store is not present and the web play store refuses to install.
For the rest, the phone as such with the new rom seems operational.
I read a number of threads here on flashing/reflashing/wiping/rewiping/ Play store not running.
They describe the problem I encounter, but their solution does not seem to work for me.
A roundup of my phone and downloaded files:
Samsung Galaxy SII I9100 International
Pda I9100XXWLQ2 / phone I9100XXLQ6 / CSCS I91000LUXLP3
before flash:
Android 4.0.4 / kernel [email protected]# SMP Preempt ...
After flash:
android 4.2.2 / kernel 3.0.31-CM-ga34655 [email protected] #2 ...
Files used: (stored on external sd card)
-thinkingbridge_i9100_stable2_13-05-07.zip
-gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip
-----------------------------------------------------------
in the recovery (CWM 6.0.3.2) I tried the advice posted here
without any noticeable difference.
There seems to be a confusion in CWM about the I9100 internal and external sdcard.
I tried formatting the internal sdcard. CWM reported success, but afterwards all the files on the internal sdcard seemed untoched. I could still folders belonging to downloaded apps from the stock rom.
(un)mounting /sdcard /emmc followed by format had the same lack of result.
wiped cache/dalvik/ data/factory &reinstalled roms/gapps no improvement.
-----------------------------------------------------
I would have liked to post this in the thread mentioned above, but, as this is my first post here, that was not allowed.
I hope I was complete enough in the problem description to entice somebody to scold but then help me :fingers-crossed:

Try this: again instal rom withput wipe and when the rom is instaled flash gapps and reboot. That always solved my issue with gapps

thank you for replying
Steps taken:
1.reboot in CWM
2.reinstall rom from ext sdcarrd without any wipe
3.reinstall gaps without wipe
4.reboot system now
...
sadly no change.
----------
I checked the contents of the internal sd-card. all data is still there from before the (attempted) format.
How can I erase that data? May I hope that rooting and superuser has activated a commandline somewhere I can use?

today I tried another ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2076650&highlight=+4+2+2+
Installed it as described.
Once again the new rom works, but no Google Apps
What can I do to find out what the problem is ? Logfiles/tracefile/ commandlines/...
best regards
glenn

another rom test XenonHD
Steps taken:
1 erasing all data on the phone- internal and external sdcard
2. formatting the external sdcard as ms-dos fat. (the phone created it ext4 not useable as such on win/mac)
3. copying the xenonhd & gapps zip to sdcard
4. CWM recovery mod
5. do a final full wipe ( suppossedly not necessary)
6. install xenonhd rom
7. install gapps zip
8. reboot
finally success - google store present
I don't why previously gapps didn't start or if this was linked with the roms used (which worked on their own)
best regards
glenn

If you try thinking Bridge again you could try using gapps inverted found for instance for baked rom. I have used it with many roms. You could also use romnuke script before flashing to ensure you have a clean system. Google gapps inverted and hawkers romnuke. Read through before nuking though. Good luck.

How to make a totally clean install?

After trying different roms and testing different things i realized that a full wipe does not clear everything of your current setup.
If you use root explorer for example and just take a look at your folders and files you will see that there are many files left from older roms.
What is the fastest way to make a totally clean installation with a custom rom (cm9 nightly or rr for example)?
I found an older tutorial here but i think it might be outdated.
Is there some kind of script that i can flash before installing the new rom (that cleans everything but efs files and recovery files for example?).
Or do i have to get a sammy stock rom with 3 parts and pit file and re-partition with odin and flash pack to a custom rom right after ?
in CWM
under mounts/storage
format system,cache,data
then flash rom
Really clean install? Flash rom through Odin. Everything will be wiped.

No as you said it just clears data and cache, that is wiped with full wipe /factory reset anyways. And system is also just the system folder.
The other folders in your root will not be touched by this and will still remain on the phone. But i cant really tell if they are used or not anymore. I can only tell by the content and the creation date that of the folders and files, that a lot of these have to be from older setups.

What kind of firmware do i need then? I think if i flash without the re-partion tick in odin options the old files would also stay there. and i need a firmware with 3 parts to flash because you need a pit file to do that.
Ofc i would like to have exactly the same partition sizes as before on my phone if i have to repartition.
So i guess i need somebody who has some knowledge with odin and 3 part firmwares.
download the stock rom from samfirmware.com(after signup)!
flash the "md5" file using odin
after fresh install of stock rom, goto settings>storage>format usb storage and format sd card if u have one!
then u can do a factory reset again and you have a clean wiped phone!

Are you sure that a 1 part firmware from sammobile will wipe all the internal data and not just update and overwrite the new ones? (im not talking about the sd card, im talking about the system data that you can just see with a root explorer for example).
If you're performing a wipe data/factory reset alongside wiping the cache and Dalvik cache, you are performing a clean install. The residual files you're seeing are stored on the internal storage (the /sdcard partition), if you wish to clear them, go into recovery, mounts and storage, and format the /sdcard partition. Viola!
Also, wrong section. All questions should be posted in Q&A. Flagged.
screamworks
I attached some screenshots now about the files that i mean.
Im not talking about the content of the internal or external sd card.
Look at the misc, lib ,res or proc and preload folders.
Also the script files.
Some files might be related to the kernel settings of course.
Im trying to go on a stock rom now and call "*2767*3855# " for a hardreset and see if that works
EDIT:
Nope the hard reset didnt work, all the files are still there.
Where do i get a ics rom with 3 parts and a pit file that i can temporary install to clean my root folder? or is there a tutorial here somewhere could follow?
External SD not visible after new ROM installation
I rooted my galaxy s2 just a day before and faced an issue. After rooting I installed jelly bean 2.6 ROM(Resurrection and remix) and found my GPRS not working and then I did a factory reset, but unfortunately phone got dead and then I removed the battery and re booted after some time. This only restored 98 applications out of 113 in this new ROM. However, I re flashed the ROM again and all the applications got back to normal, but my SD card was not to be seen after this second flash, before factory reset my external SD card was readable(with the new ROM)

the external SD it's mounted on /emmc so, there are your files. You can access to this folder with any file explorer (even the stock one). Just open the file manager, select the "mnt" option on the top, the one between the Home icon and SD icon, inside you can find the emmc folder.
Well i guess i could compare my files with the files of somebody else with rr and delete some of them manually
How To Install This?

Since you are currently running CyanogenMod, then follow these instructions:
1. On your phone
-Boot your phone to CWM recovery
-Wipe data/factory reset
-boot your phone to download mode
2. On your Pc
- unzip the downloaded firmware,
- flash the tar.MD5 via Odin
READ Odin Flashing Tutorials here

Am new with galaxy s 2 well actualy its not even home yet =D but i got experience with HTC HD2, isnt there somethink like Task29 or similar or its odin exactly the same think, so that what am looking for? And would it be good to manuali format it with a pc, like when i conet galaxy s2 to pc and then via program format the comlet internal memory fat32 and ext3 or how it is made at that phone
ass this is already some time, ODIN is the best option on gs2, had my problems on start caus of imei restoration, was confuzing to learn all the stuff i needed as a brand new starter with it =D but got it done, but am suffering the loss of volume buttons, had to do an usb jig for 5cent :good: prety cheep jeh, now am on AOSP Neatrom 5.8 A.KK 4.4.3 slim, recomending it =)

Rom install - No change?

Hi guys, tried searching the forum but no luck in these pages. I have a strange problem. I'm installing a custom ROM, it goes through everything fine, reboots, but it's just as before (i.e same wallpaper, apps, messages etc). This includes after doing a superwipe. So I have 2 questions;
When I superwipe, does it automatically choose the root on the phone?
Is it possible to have the phone's software on the SD card, and is booting from there?
Thanks in advance!
can u be a bit more clear?
which rom?
what steps did you follow?
what do you mean by superwipe?
some apps can be moved to sd card but some wont work on sd card. you cant boot from there either.
Hi
Thanks for the reply. The ROM I installed was this one - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1797334 - which included the "superwipe" script (I don't know what it does but I'm assuming it wipes everything completely from the stock phone)...
After doing that I installed from ZIP from sdcard, it went through the installation of the rom no problem, then when it reboots it just looks the same, with the old ROM on it
Sorry if i'm not explaining properly!
Thanks
try reading the op....it states that is an improved version of stock Rom with no visual changes! What are you doing flashing roms when you can't even be bothered to read the op?!

I read that - but it still has the bloatware. When I say "it looks the same" I mean literally - same apps in the same locations, same widjets, same wallpaper, messages still there, etc.

Yes but the speed, fluidity and batterylife of that rom is awesome, you can also theme the rom and delete or freeze applications/widgets you don`t need. This is not a restaurant you know where you can order whatever you expect , also do some effort yourself.
Look in settings > about phone and see if the rom name is in there. If it is then congratulations you have successfully flashed a rom.
Although reading about superwipe it seems to wipe everything including internal SD! Why the f*ck would anyone do that, don't use that, its not needed!
Just factory reset it in cwm and that should be enough.

very strange as the super wipe script wipes all data, cache and sd card, so if that isn't happening the flash is failing, and you should get error message...my only suggestion is to try 5.x.x.x recovery as I have seen several problems reported with touch recovery

This rom does not have version 6 recovery, it is 5 and non-touch . The superscript wipes the entire internal sd card and the caches. The external sd card is untouched. And i have done it myself, but after the superwipe it did matter in batterylife and rom speed compared to the standard full wipe.

That sounds like the problem then, flash the Rom from 5.x.x.x recovery and I'm guessing all will be good, so basically you need to flash a new recovery(remember kernel and recovery are separate on s3) and then try flashing the Rom, alternatively flash stock Rom, root with cf root(5.x.x.x) and then flash it

No because after the superwipe you flash the rom from the external sd card and you have the recovery that is included in the rom/kernel. There shouldn`t be a problem realy, it works well if people only read more than the first 2 lines of the OP.

So I went to settings > about and see that it says Android Revolution is installed - but there's something going wrong with the wipe still - considering everything is still the same? I'm not sure how to explain it properly. Kinda like I've reinstalled a browser but it's kept my tabs i guess

[Q] Does my Omega installing plan need adjustment?

Hey guys,
I am completely new to this whole topic so I read several hours and finally came up with a plan for what to do to install omega when my Galaxy S3 i9300 (my first android phone) will arrive tomorrow.
If you spot any mistakes I would make (also in the files I plan on using), please correct me!
1. Upgrading to Jellybean with Kies
2. Installing CWM (File name is CF-SGS3-CWM-v5.5-v1.5 - It's a .tar) via Odin 3.0.4 in download mode- I think I know how to do that
3. Rebooting in Recovery mode and creating a Backup File with CWM - I think I know how to do that
4. Saving the Backup file from the clockworkmod\backup folder on my PC
5. Rebooting in recovery mode and wiping data, cache and dalvik cache - I think I know how to do that
5. Copying the .zip file of Omega to (a folder called root??) internal SD-Card folder of the Galaxy S3 (File name is I9300_Omega_v31_XXDLJ4_Jelly_Bean)
6. Rebooting in recovery mode again and selecting “install zip from SD card” to install the Omega zip
7. Customize like a boss
done
(optional)
8. Realize something doesn't work properly and spam the forums with QQ threads OR Realize I bricked my brand new phone and cry furiously
Thanks in advance for letting me know if my plan needs adjustment

Flash recovery
Do factory reset, than wipe dalvik.
Than flash Omega.
Finally reboot and enjoy
But I'm recommending InsertCoin, because it is easy theamble with better themes, very stable (still haves some problems, but reboot solves them), mostly no lags, good memory managing.

Hey,
thanks for your answer! I have to install jellybean first if I want to install a ROM for Jellybean, right? So I guess that's not explicitly in the instructions but it's still a requirement?? Or does Omega install Jellybean itself?
I am really not sure, but I think I have to install Jellybean first.

[Q] how to get out of bootloop on s 2

first time i install cm10.1 nightly on s2 i9100, there was no prob...then flashed pacman rom ..was a little glitchy and slow.
So moved on to paranoid android..this is where the prob started... it keeps on bootlooping :?
Right now flashed stock 4.1.2 via odin and rooted with siyah kernel s2 v6 0.5b ..works fine
but if i flash any custom ROM it bootloops ,even with the prior cm10.1 that i had..
checked xda , did a lot of work but still stuck at square one..{wiping this , wiping that}
only thing i can find fault with is in recovery when wiping data says
Format/sdcard/.android_secure ..fail
skip Format
Format completed
when trying to intsall from sdcard it says
E:/ cannot mount..
tried different cwm recovery .. all with the same findings..
so please help me.. its boring to be stuck with stock ROM..
i am a doctor ..i tried but couldnt follow running SDK and commands ..so please keep it simple
or if possible publish a video.. bcause iam not the only one with this predicament...during my research i found a lot android users with the same problems..
Thanks

Thank you..ammar but as i have already said my phone works but with the stock rom...i end up bootlooping only when iinstall custom ROM
n the solution given in that thread 1. is to flash a stock rom.. 2. flashing villain rom but the download links are not working..
i think it has do with fail to format .androidsecure thing but what do i know?
again thanx..
check this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1906362
also backup all ur internal memory data to a pc and then format your Internal memory from within the rom
You could try using a couple of wipe scripts by a guy called hawkerpaul....I think they're called 'romwipe' and 'kernelwipe'.......
Use the XDA search function....should be easy enough to find.
It may be that there are some 'leftovers' following the usual wipes (cache, dalvik and data) that are causing conflicts with your fresh installs.....
The above mentioned scripts perform a more in depth wipe....might help.....

i have tried that GS2ROM wipe and nuke scripts already, with no luck ... yes that runs bigger wipe but it still fail to format sdcard .andoidsecure
i think it has do with renaming of the sdcard{silly doubt when recovery states sdcard , it doesnt refer to extsd right?} from sdcard to sdcard0 while installing CM10.1,,
if i could safely erase that {.andoidsecure}, probably things will back to normal .. anyone know how to
oh iam not able to use install from sdcard option in recovery(formerly before flashing any ROM i was able to..i hav to install from "internal memory"

[Q] Need help installing NeatROM for the first time

Hi everybody! This is my first time posting here and first time trying to install a custom rom. I've been running stock 4.1.2 for 3 years but the phone lately got very slow and battery has been draining very fast so i decided to reinstall everything. I decided to try a custom rom as it will be missing all the bloatware and after reading about different custom roms decided to go for NeatROM based on 4.4.
Ive read some guides on how to install it and was confident how to do it but the more i read the more confused i got.
I would be very greatfull if someone can give me step by step instructions with links to the correct files.
My phone is:
Gt-I9100
Android versio 4.1.2
Baseband version I9100XXMS2
Kernel version 3.0.31-1211311 , [email protected]#3, Smp preempt thu may 16 10:05:20 kst 2013
Build number jzo54k.I9100xwlsw
What I have done so far is:
- done a backup with Kies before i changed anything
- rooted the phone using a file CWM-superSU-v0.97.zip by putting on ext SD card and booting in recovery
-installed Titanium Backup and did a backup with it
I'm confused with what to do next. This is where I need your help. I read many user comments on different websites that their phone got bricked and i do not want to do that, that's why i want to clarify all the steps.
I read i should install PhilZ CWM recovery and found this page
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...lz-cwm6-stock-kernel-cwm6-root-exfat-t1877270
Should i chose file << 03.06.2013 - PhilZ-cwm6 v5.06.1 with CWM 6.0.3.2 based recovery >> for xwlsw
Should i install it using Odin method or by copying to ext sd card?
What is that "no yellow triangle" thing about?
Then should i follow instructions on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...ivatives/rom-i9100-aosp-neatrom-v5-8-t2603169
Installation with Full wipe:
-Download KitKat CWM Recovery and save zip to internal SDcard
-Download AOSP NeatROM and save zip to internal SDcard
-Download Google Apps and save zip to internal SDcard
-Boot into CWM or PhilZ Recovery (Volume up + Home + Power)
-DO A DATA WIPE / Clean to install a new ROM
-Go to Advance and Select Wipe dalvik cache
-Go to Mounts and storage, select Format system, Format preload
-Select Install zip from SD card
-Flash KitKat CWM Recovery
-Reboot RECOVERY
-Flash NeatROM
-Flash Google Apps (optional)
-Reboot your device
Will be able to copy the contacts, sms etc from the Kies backup once NeatRom is installed? Should i use titanium backup? Before insatlling the rom it says to do a Nandroid backup? Is that done in recovery mode when Philz CWM has been installed?
i would appreciate if you can list all the steps and most importantly links to correct files.

Hi Lomisz
First of all consider that after 3 years you battery couldd be near its end of life, could not be a firmware related problem (after nearly 2 years my battery cannot last one day any more, I'm going to change it).
Actually I'm happily running NeatRom v6.4 which is 4.1.2 based.
If You want to install 4.4 NeatRom version you have to follow the instructions on the thread (normally NeatRom instructions are well written).
FORGOT to use Keys to restore any data! My advice is to use always Titanium Backup, I've always been able to restore SMS, phone contacts (which usually I keep on my Gmail Phonebook), settings, Wifi, and applications.
If You're running a rooted firmware with recovery I suggest you to perform a nandroid Backup from recovery in order to be able to do a full restore in case of failure.
Thanks for the help. managed to install it last night and everything is working.
One more question, if I want to try some other custom roms which are not based on kitkat then do I need to flash a different CWM recover than the KitKat compatible one that I used so far?

No
And a little suggestion: in case you have kitkat cwm as flashable zip on your storage, leave it there, cause it helped me out often since I'm flashing stuff.
Sometimes flashing something will show an error or elsewhat, but using this cwm version helped me out most of the time till now
