I've noticed that my streaming video quality on the touchpad leaves a lot to be desired. I've talked to my buddy and he told me he hasn't really noticed anything wrong with it on his. Without actually using his Touchpad, I don't know if it's just me being overly anal, or if there is something really wrong with mine.
Does anyone else get a lot of pixelation when watching online videos?
no issues here. quality looks good. with it overclocked the video is smooth and sweet.
I wish there was an hdmi port to stream when im away from home with no access to my ps3 or xbox
they need a netflix app
This is what my youtube quality looks like. This is full screen at 720p.

I think if you follow the tweak guide here:
http://www.pcauthority.com.au/Featu...-tuning-and-speeding-up-your-hp-touchpad.aspx
and install Preware . in there there is a HULU fix that was posted. I downloaded & installed it have fantastic streaming quality now. Cheers
Thanks, but that video I posted has all those tweeks done, and the hulu fix applied. I think I'm just going to unload this thing as the main reason I bought it was for videos and it just isn't up to the level I was expecting.

quality could be attributed to your connection and what is configured on the router you are connected to.
I am just wondering if anyone has any tips or mods I can do to lower the nasty pixilation I see when streaming over netflix or other movies sometimes.it happens on wifi and 3g.
it drives me insane when im watching a movie over hdmi output and it even gets "blurry" on my tv screen. Am I alone? Is there anything I can do to make it look clearer /sharper?
I didn't think it should show up like that on my tv also but it does. And the tv isn't a bad tv.
Just looking for a little more clarity. Mainly just a bit more consistent clarity. I don't mind it once in a while but it happens more than I like.
Thanks for any input.
There was a post this week (previous page ) called "Encoding settings for video playback" that was also addressing this issue (i believe). It was a little over my head technically, so I'm not sure what was concluded, but it sounds like what u r saying.
Oh, and I have the exact same experience (annoying), so lemme know what ya find out ; )

That applies for netflix as well? I mean, I know its streaming, but that has to be due to hardware shortcomings, no?

See I don't understand this statement because it happens with ANY video/movie I watch with my x2. Have even viewed highly rated quality movies from "certain nameless " websites and get the same problem.
The only thing I don't really get nearly as much.pixilation while viewing is quality videos on youtube when viewing in high quality mode ((go figure))
Even when I was complete stock unrooted and rented a movie from google market I got the same problem.((I can't remember how constant it was but I KNOW pixilation was there))
Also im not really speaking of my videos I recorded.((of which I had great quality and playback was great also when atv720p and DVD quality )) but that was when using blur camera...I haven't tried any video recording on eclipse miui camera yet
Too many variables are involed with streaming. Every company may say streaming is the way to go when its not. Your internet connection, how many people are streaming on Netflix, plus SD vs hd, settings in Netflix, crappy HDMI chord. Bought an HDMI chord from an August zed retailer for Verizon and everything was pixilated. Didn't even get to the video when I saw how bad it.was.I just unhooked and returned. Rent or download the video. That's how you get the best quality. Streaming is 50/50 usually better hardware also makes the difference. Its probably recognizing that its mobile and is giving you crap cause they need to make sure their videos need to work within the fragmentation of android as a whole. Best to leave streaming on laptops hooked to your HDTV and streaming on mobile on you cellphone screen.

The thing is the "blurry" picture on the tv screen looks EXACTLY like the image on my phone screen. It is an exact mirror. Im trying to figure out if there is a way I can fix that.
It was worse on eclipse 7. Something in one of the init.d scripts caused my gjjellyfish test to max at 22fps and my mandlebrot score to be horrific. So now that those are back to normal it doesn't happen as often but it is still noticeable. Just wondering if there is a way to improve that.
Do you get the problem with a video file on the phone itself? Cause so far all I can say is that blur is from the servers if it is not happening with the video file on the phone. I don't stream Netflix on my cell and when I used the mirror to an HDTV it looked horrible on TV but perfect on my cell.
It streaming depends with the host servers and overall quality of the video for mobile since they most likely won't be the same video files for computer's cause they meed to make sure it can stream on a 3g network and have the customer not die from old age waiting for it to load. Even though you use wifi it will still send the IP of a mobile which will get you the mobile version which may not be as good.
Only fix is to stream over a laptop instead. If you went through the apps and this did nothing then there is nothing you can do on your end.

Has anyone tried using dolphin hd spoofed as a desktop to see if they can stream from netflix website? I think I may try this later on to see if that helps anything ...
I have had a great experience with my new Xperia Z1 phone and wanted the Sony tablet as I love the form factor. My primary use is to watch video and do a few emails.
I'm pretty disappointed to find that Netflix works extremely poorly on this tablet and has constant issues with sound sync and dropped frames during playback. We have literally tried everything to improve it including a repair through PC Companion but nothing helps. It may be a wi-fi issue specific to this tablet and I am looking at that today, but it doesn't seem like something we can fix. We have a Nexus 7 and a few phones here and they all work just fine.
Does anyone have flawless Netflix playback on this tablet?
I don't have any major issues but I don't use Netflix much. Sound is in sync and I don't see any frame drops after about 30 seconds of playback. I was watching The Avengers and noticed a green flicker sometimes but that's it.
I have the exact same problems, the sound is slight un-synced and the video quality is not that good at all, i love Sony, but i really am disappointed about this.
I didn't even notice it because I throw my Netflix onto my TV, but I just checked and the sound is definitely not synced up. No dropped frames here, but it's almost unwatchable with how off the sound is.
Sent from my Xperia Tablet Z
I also installed the directv app to stream live channels, and I am still getting the exact same problem.
Netflix works great on my xperia tablet z 321, no issues at all. I use Meow ROM and kernel on my tablet. Make sure you back up DRM keys before unlocking boot loader. Only issue with this 4.3 jb ROM is video cam record is broken, still takes pics fine. I prefer using my gs4 for video record anyways. Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, babby!:cyclops:

I have had no issues with Netflix on this tablet, even with stock rom. I haven't noticed any sync problems or bad image quality (except maybe the first 30 seconds). Haven't mattered whether I used 3g/4g or WiFi.

Mine is running fantastic. I just received my Z a few days ago and absolutely love it!
Still on 4.1 though.
I am experiencing exactly the same problem. I wonder is it something to do with the Bravia Engine being enforced which is causing the delay whilst it performs extra processing on the image? Is there a way to turn this off? It's the only issue I have with this tablet as it is otherwise absolutely fantastic. I also use Plex and Qloud Media Player to stream from my PC and I don't get any lip sync issues with this. Netflix is unwatchable on the Tablet Z.
Just got my Xperia Z Tablet yesterday, and immediately noticed this issue. Came here and I don't know if I should be happy or disappointed to see that others have the same problem. At least I'm not crazy, but neither does it seem like something I can just return my unit over and get one that works.
I had the same thought about the Bravia Engine and you can turn that off in display settings, but it didn't seem to do anything for me. I also tried turning off all sound processing; nothing works, still out of sync.
Very disappointing as Netflix is one of the big things I use a tablet for.
Yeah it didn't work for me neither. Very disappointing. We should expect this to be repaired with the next Tablet Z up yet but that is for certain. This is the only issue I have with the tablet

Just upgraded to 4.3... no change.
I wonder if this is something some people just don't notice. I wouldn't say it makes Netflix unwatchable like some others, but to me it's definitely noticeable. It's about a 50ms delay between the picture and sound. Ironically my Xoom plays Netflix better than the Xperia Z.

That makes me wonder if I should try exchanging mine. You're running totally stock 4.3? I have not rooted or made any other changes to mine, just installed a few other apps that I normally install. It seems really weird that only this one app would be affected, but I guess if not everyone has this problem, it could be a batch of defective audio chips or something. The strange thing is the audio is actually *late* on mine, so it's not the picture lagging, it's the audio.
Is anyone else running totally stock 4.3 that has *no* sync issues in Netflix? Perfect sync?

Yeah mine is totally stock completely unmodded, perfect netflix sync, no late audio, i just used it for an hour an i had no issues
Though im curious, does locking the device mid video and then unlocking it trigger the delay? It hasnt happened on netflix but sometimes when im watching anime using MX player and i lock the device while its playing and then unlock it the audio starts to lag but it fixes itself by rewinding the video a bit

No, it's just always there. I've tried starting and restarting Netflix in a bunch of different ways, including booting clean, waiting until everything's finished loading and then starting it up; closing down every single running service and then starting it; starting a video, backing out and then resuming it; starting a video and scrubbing to different points; pausing and then resuming; killing the Netflix process and then restarting Netflix; alternately turning on and off every single audio and video processing feature (by which I learned that the Bravia engine actually makes the PQ worse, but that's another issue); I mean no matter what I do, it's still out of sync. And it is the only video app that is. YouTube, Play Movies, the Sony Movies app, MX Player, etc. all play fine. It's just Netflix. It's bizarre.
I am seriously thinking about returning mine and just trying another one. (Problem is I always seem to buy tablets right before going on trips, and I need it.) Since *some* people seem to have good playback, and absolutely none of the reviews I've seen have mentioned this, I really wonder if there's not some weird defect with the ones that are affected by this problem. But it's just really strange that it's only in this one app. OTOH, it definitely does not happen on any other Android tablet I've used, so it seems like a tablet problem rather than a Netflix problem.

Well, I just did a factory restore and the first thing I did was run Netflix, totally clean system. Same result - out of sync. This thing is going back to Best Buy. If the next one is the same, well, then I've gotta decide what to do... my Xoom plays Netflix better than this and it also gives me live TV (which the XTZ doesn't)...
I bought a Sony XTZ couple weeks ago. I love everything about this tablet, until I watched a movie on Netflix on it. It is borderline blurry compared to streaming the same title on Windows 8 or iPad. So I thought it's just a Netflix thing, until last night I played a movie from Google Play. It looked absolutely horrible, SD quality. It is not my internet connection speed as I get 100/30Mbps here.
I Googled this subject and found no information about this. Am I seeing things or is there something wrong with my Sony XTZ?

So I did some more reading, apparently Sony didn't pay for licensing for HD playback on the XTZ :silly: I've read that even Sony's own video services do not offer HD playback on the XTZ. Wow, just wow. I really love this tablet but this is a deal breaker.
I have 4 more days to request a return on this. I was trying to get it to update to the latest 10.4.1.b.0.101 but it's not available yet. I will give it 3 more days to see if the update hits, and see if it enables HD playback. If not I have to return it which will be unfortunate and very disappointing.
Please tell me this is not true ..

Yes, all streaming HD services. Very disappointing as I loved everything about this tablet. I really wanted it to work, so much so that I called Xperia support even knowing it'd be a waste of time. First thing I was asked was if I can copy the movies to my XTZ to be played.
This appears to affect the entire range of Xperia devices including the flagship Z1 Ultra. I'll link two samples I found here, but I saw the same complaints on other Xperia devices. I've found no complaints about Netflix, but trust me, if you watch the same title on Netflix with any other devices, the quality difference will be clear - it's way sharper even on a 720p device than on the XTZ.

I don't know if the XTZ 2 will not have that issue - this seems to be an issue with every Xperia devices even the Z1 Ultra which came out not that long ago..
So I returned the XTZ and bought an LG G Pad 8.3, and find that the LG also has poor Netflix streaming quality, but at least the LG can play HD contents from Google Play which the XTZ would only play SD quality.
Did some more reading on this matter. 1080p Netflix on Android requires Android 4.3 (which the XTZ does in fact have) that has additional DRM API built-in, but it seems the ONLY Android device that can do 1080p streaming is the Nexus 7 2013. One might say on a smallish tablet device 720p vs 1080p shouldn't matter. I probably would've thought so myself if I hadn't been spoiled by the biting sharpness from iPads and Windows 8 devices when watching Netflix. The difference is immediately noticeable.
I've attached some pictures to show the difference in case anyone is interested to see. The difference in person is greater than these pictures show.

I'm pretty sure all non-Nexus 7 2013 devices only get 480p, hence the low quality. Netflix help pages also say HD is only supported on "new Nexus 7".

What is the reasoning for this? That's ridiculous.
I kid you not, the regular iPad Mini with the 1024x768 screen and the Dell Windows 8.1 8" 1280x800 tablets look much sharper than the non-Nexus 7 full HD Android tablets I've tried so far. Yes I had a 2013 Nexus 7 previously and Netflix is very sharp on it. This inconsistent experience from Android is a big turn off, although I like the LG G Pad a lot and it is a keeper. I'll just use my other gadgets when I watch Netflix.
I don't think there would be much differences in your images above.
Since each tablet you used has different brightness and contrast, so the picture sharpness looks different.
I have attached my photos showing pictures from XTZ and iPad Air. The two are a little out of sync.
Look at detail of Liam's shirt. They are the same on both XTZ and Air.

I believe it is because of DRM mess, i.e. the Widevine DRM interfaces are not implemented properly or something about it is different, etc.
I modified the Netflix APK to enable verbose logging and I looked through the code, and it seems to check specifically for Nexus 7 2013 on Android 4.3 only to enable Widevine DRM mode, otherwise the Widevine mode is disabled (which, I guess, disables HD playback completely). On Android 4.4 there is no separate check for device name, so maybe HD playback could work with Netflix for any 4.4 tablet that implements the Android Widevine DRM interface properly (or it could be it is limited in other places as well)...
And yes, the playback doesn't go above 480p according to the logs on my Tablet Z.

You can't see any quality difference in the pictures because the photo resolution is way too low for that. 480p video has 480 pixels in the vertical direction, and your photos doesn't even have that amount of vertical pixels for each display.
To definitely see what resolution your Netflix is maxing out at, search for "example short" in Netflix and play the "Example Short 23.976" video (in U.S. Netflix). The video shows the current playback bitrate and size in the upper-left corner. For me it maxes out at "1750 kbps, 720x480", which is consistent with what I saw in the APK, and which is not HD.
Sorry to bump this old thread, but it seems Netflix has finally let it loose on full HD streaming to other Android devices, at least on both my LG (G Pad 8.3 and G2 phone). I think since two Netflix app updates ago. The difference is immediately noticeable - same biting sharpness I've been used to from iPads and Windows 8.1. I imagine this would be across the board on all Android devices.
I remembered this thread when I searched "LG G Pad Netflix stuttering", which very surprisingly was rectified by rebooting the G Pad.
Edit, seems Netflix has "fixed" it again with the new update. The super sharpness is once again gone. In trying to fix the stuttering issue, I updated the Netflix app to the current release. I'm not seeing things. I've gone nuts since the XTZ in trying to see what's going on with Netflix on Android. I settled on a scene on Skyfall. At 12:21 the conference call speaker (plus M's wrinkles on her face), you'll see the very fine details when on HD, which I saw on the G Pad on the last Netflix app update. It's gone now.
I give up.
Edit 2: I think Netflix is messing around with things on their backend. A couple days ago I started noticing titles actually say "HD" when browsing on the Android app. Now it's gone. I went as far as downloading the .apk for 3.3.3 and 3.4.0, nope HD is gone.
Now I give up.
very poor product, equally poor customer service

The video shows the current playback bitrate and size in the upper-left corner. For me it maxes out at "1750 kbps, 720x480", which is consistent with what I saw in the APK, and which is not HD.

I bought this tablet thinking it would be amazing, dust proof, water resistant, slim slick design, SD card etc. It is very poor for the price I paid here in UK £380, live streaming rarely works, it goes off after about 30 seconds. Battery life poor, takes forever charging. Uploading videos is shocking, producing such poor quality videos even from the HD GoPro cameras, it's all blurry. I wish now I had stuck with my original plan of staying with Apple. Waste of money, customer service on Twitter absolutely useless, saying for me to do the same thing "system repair" black black black, why should we have to do this after paying nearly £400 for a tablet. I did do the system repair process and it made absolutely no difference whatsoever. Avoid Sony Xperia at all costs.
Back to Apple for me after my refund. Boom
My Netflix audio has been out of sync since I first got my G3. My network is fine as Netflix works perfectly on PC, iOS devices, Chrome casts etc. The audio seems about 1 second behind the video. Anyone have a solution or have the same problem?

I typically watch on my chromecast, but the few times I have watched on the phone everything has looked good. If you're running ART try switching back to Dalvik. Other than that, try the typical force stop/restart on the netflix app and then a full on reboot. If it's still laggy then I'm out of ideas.
Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately I've tried all or them. So far
I'll update if u get it fixed. (and yeah casting is fine for me with my phone because it isn't really my phone doing the playback but rather the actual chromecast)

I have been getting the same problem
Maybe its because the image quality is much better than on most other devices that its arriving slower than the audio? That's my best guess. Its not super annoying, the delay is small enough that if you don't pay attention to who is speaking then you cant really tell. But it is noticeable. And if there is a fix that would be awesome.

I have this problem too. Tried downgrading Netflix but no luck. Tried different Roms too and nothing. It's pretty annoying. Funny thing is I don't have these issues with video players or videos streaming from YouTube.
Just found this thread researching this issue. Just got my G3 yesterday day. Everything is still on stock. Anyone notice if other video apps suffer the same problem? I ask because to me it feels like video generally looks a bit like overprocessed motion-interpolated modern tv sets. And if the g3 uses stuff like that it might be related...
