Hello, looking for a broken/borked/dead HTC One to attempt a different disassembly method to try to help the One community.
It is my understanding that they are glued together, not screwed, and that the suction cup method does not work. I used to retrofit headlights that also used glues, some heat glues, some needed a solvent. I have a lot of technical skill, and i would like to try my hand at popping one apart WITHOUT destroying the case/screen. I dont care if its water damaged, cracked screen, whatever, as long as its intact.
Posted this in all HTC One sections, please PM me if you have one or know of one, i'll pay shipping to and fro (i will NOT attempt repairs, JUST non-destructive disassembly) and post the results and a video on youtube if successful, and ship the unit back disassembled if successful, and not damaged further if not successful.

not yet, i may later, but i want to see if its possible to decouple the hardware with simple acetate gas in a bag (pretty safe; its nail polish remover) and a low heat gun with a suction cup.
thats how i got the glass off my friends iphone digitizer when he cracked just the glass, then reglued it. glass screen cost $10 on amazon, screen/digitizer was only available through apple as a $200-something repair job.

Ive taken one apart. Your not getting it apart without damaging the housing. No if's and's or but's. The amount of heat required to melt the glue holding the housing assembly together would damage the LCD (believe me, I know). In addition, any chemicals used will risk melting the delicate white plastic that is molded to the case. What I will tell you is that this will be a phone that requires a housing any time you service anything inside. Look on ebay. Complete housings are 50 bucks, that is what you will be looking at if you have to change a battery, lcd or internal board. I will say that 50 bucks isnt to bad for an aluminum housing. Plus, it freshens up the one to look like new. Let me know if you have any questions.

Guys I'm looking for a real original htc touch screen, till now I've found only clones. I tried them 2 times, and differently than the original one, when I dropped the phone with the clones 2 times on 2 I immediately broke the touch screen. Instead when I dropped the phone with the original one I had no problem at all.
The clones just suck...

supplied me genuine lcds & digitizers for a variaty of HTC & Nokia devices.
Big part with final result on Diamond 2 is correct bonding of digitizer, non solid setting adhesive should be used & full bonding around the edges must be achieved.
Solid setting adhesives transfer shock without any absorbtion & non bonded areas flex & resonate causing potential fracture points.
Of course ****e quality chinese copy parts play a big roll in problem repairs too ...
Actually I bought exactly the new touch screen from that seller. And that touch screen wasn't the original though.
You can see that it's not an original one looking at the zoom bar. It's shorter that the origial one. The genuine one gose from edge to edge, instead the clone one is smaller. And the overall colour is different. I can post pictures of both original one and clone one.

Just put in a PayPal claim for non delivery & get your money back. recently got LCD & digitixer for 2 Diamond repairs, both parts were original. If sent you copies do them over, get your money back & give them some nasty feed back.
No hard solid adhesives should be used, needs to be soft rubber type glue to help absorb & stop shock loads transfering to digitizer.
Ok here is a picture where you can see the difference between the original and the one bought from that seller. Is yours similar to the one marked original or to the one marked clone?

One marked original, markings are light & the - & + icons run almost in-line with edges of screen.
Also back lighting bleeds through too much on cheap copy digitizers.
They supplied you a non genuine part so screw them over big time.
I live in Asia & by my digitizers & LCDs from UK as all our local parts suppliers sell china spare parts of supposing different quality pending on how much you are willing to pay ! Quality of almost all chinese digitizers & LCDs are simply ****e & not worth the postage stamp & do nothing but pollute the environment with manufacturing waste & a product that is waste as soon as removed from packaging.
Sorry to thread hi-jack but iv'e been looking for this answer everywhere and everywhere says what type of adhesive to use but no one gives a specific make-brand or link to buy any .
I was looking at buying a full case from the same seller as my phones current case is looking a little worn out and although the digitizer is perfect and is falling out i dare say when i try to get it off it will smash into a million little pieces so i'll order the full set. But my question remains what is the best type of glue to use who makes it and where can i get it from?
Oh and would be handy to hear if you have any tips or experiences using it.

I too ordered 2 digitizers from E-cell; both were fakes!! They won't go into any discussion with me, they just told me to send them back. They KNOW that is crap there selling and advertise it as genuine...

Digitizer glued to LCD?
I contacted a repair man and told me it's a waste of time buying replacement digitizer as the orginal is stuck onto the LCD and you risk damaging the LCD if you attempt to remove it.
Is this true or is he scaring me off in doing the job myself.
Also I read that you need adhesive tape is this true?
If refering to Diamond2, LCD is not bonded any any way to digitizer.
Digitizer is bonded to alloy front chassis only.
This is one of the easiest HTC models to strip & repair, LCD or digitizer can be fitted individually no question.
If you take care with disembly & be gentle with all ribbons it will be simple.
some common sense & previous experience comes in handy de-bonding & rebonding digitizer but its far from scary.
Adhesive tape is not the best option but perhaps the simplest.
I used a tiger brand u30 adhesive, black in colour & sets rubbery so act as a good shock absorber. advantage of adhesive bonding is better full radius bonding resulting in a more shock & direct impact resistant digitizer.

I have replaced mine 4 times. Used 3m black rubbery adhesive tape.
If you where my neighbour i would have changed it for faster than you could drink a cup of coffee
It's a bit tricky to find god digitizers on Ebay.
This is one of the best I bought. The backside should look like the one in this auction.

Fortune IT hardware shop BKK. No done a second replacement yet but tested adhesive prior to using it for assembly & it should be quite easy to clean to about 90%.
Tape is the simplest but varies in adhesive strength & can result in digitizer being not flush fitting & not evenly bonded resulting in easy failure with impact loads.
Also most people who use tape end up doing second replacement.

Yes, there is a note in the techrepublic teardown about it being bonded like a smartphone. You should however be vary careful given the size of the screen more heat (not temperature) is required, and the risk of thermally cracking the underlying LCD panel is correspondingly higher.

So, I took apart my wife's HTC Flyer this past week to replace the screen. While the Techrepublic teardown shots are helpful, it's missing about ten steps at the end that involve actually removing the screen. I've messed around with tabletpc's and laptops before but not cell phones so wasn't really prepared for the fact that you have to pretty much take the whole Flyer apart in order to be able to get the screen off. As far as I can tell, no one else has documented taking one of these apart to replace the screen. I will write up something more involved when I get a chance but here's a couple things that I found out about the screen.
1. The part of the screen that you touch with your finger and stylus is not glass! It is a heavy plastic layer that is adhered to the glass digitizer. It is clear with the black around the edge and cutout for the HTC logo. This was the part of my screen that had chips in it. I tried to use a screen repair kit to repair the chips (which I did) but it took off the outer, darker finish in the process. So I moved to the next step, replacing the screen. I didn't know about the outer layer, otherwise that would have been much easier to replace. But, I don't think you can get that part unless you have connections with HTC.
2. The outer layer/digitizer glass comes as one part (along with the n-trig connector). I ordered mine for around $50 on ebay.
3. You will need to take the back off and much of the motherboard to be able to disconnect the n-trig connector.
4. Taking the screen off will take heat. I used a hair dryer but more heat could be better although you have to be careful of the lcd underneath. My digitizer broke while removing and ending up putting a small gouge in the lcd. I was able to fix the lcd well enough, just be careful.
5. HTC used a buttload of sticky tape to secure the glass to the lcd and case. My cheap blue pry tool quickly broke so I ended up using a plastic butter knife to separate digitizer from the case. Once off, I used Goo Be Gone to get rid of all the sticky tape from it. I'm ready to put new tape on but I'm not sure exactly what they used. Anyone have any ideas? It's a black, closed cell sticky tape that is really stringy when it comes to taking off. Most of the stuff I see for sale online seems to be really thin stuff. I picked up some Scotch Outdoor Mounting Tape by 3M that looks to be similar that I am going to experiment with. Anyone know for sure what they used?
6. I put the new digitizer on temporarily to check to see if it worked and it did (yay)! But I still need need to cut all of the tape and put it in the right spot. There are also these little plastic tabs that go on the backside of the screen. They are used to refract light from the led's to light up the outside navigation buttons. Be careful not to lose these. I did, and had to make one. We'll see how I did once I get it back together.
7. I found that there's not a lot of parts out there for these things. At least not compared to cell phones. Now that they're being discontinued, I don't know if that is going to help.
Anyway, I took a few pics along the way and will try to write something up when I get more time. I just wanted to give folks a heads-up on the screen and how it's put together. I can't imagine the View's screen is any different. So whatever they're using for the outer layer isn't Gorilla Glass. Or is it?

Hard to find parts for the Flyer/View which could be a problem. Looks like some is selling an LCD, though on eBay.

I don't see why not. Except for some of the internals, they are pretty much identical hardware wise.
Hello guys, my digitizer broken.....the lcd is in perfect condition..but i am not sure if the digitizer can replaced alone because lcd and digitizer are stick together....so is there any way that i can fix my digitizer without buying new lcd and without damaging my lcd........i want only to replace the digitizer and have it as was when i bought it...also i am in Europe,so i don't have any warranty either a shop that sell parts and can replace it!Waiting impatiently for your help!

I did several of the htc inspire 4g phones at one point, bought,fixed and sold. I can safely say this process CAN be done but is very difficult and not to be taken lightly. You have to dismantle EVERYTHING else to get to the digitizer/lcd assembly, heat the 2 pieces and slooooowly pry apart. It's VERY easy to break the lcd in the process, then there's dust that gets in between and/or adhesive when putting in the new. The vids make it look easy-it's not. The connectors are also fragile and EASY to break-and there are others not directly attached to the lcd, lost TINY screws. It's also VERY easy to damage the case in the process or the power/vol buttons-the list goes on! It's way easier to replace the lcd/digitizer assembly-yes, way more expensive too. I have been following several "parts" phones and replacement parts places. The phone is too new yet for parts to be in enough demand that the price is reasonable (or broken DNA's). A parts phone is in the 200-300 ranges, the digitizer around 60-80 the lcd's around 100 and the assembly (both together already) close to 200. You do the math. You can get a whole new phone for not much more. That's if you don't end up breaking other parts and replacing them as well. If you are good at this stuff, it's very rewarding and fun to do so go for it. You can always sell your phone 'for parts' on ebay if it doesn't work out. Just don't expect easy.
As someone that's done a number of these, the above information is pretty much spot on.
I busted my glass a few days ago and found that information on disassembly and repair is sparse as are the parts. Replacing the assembly is usually a safer bet, I would say that separating the two doubles the difficulty of the project, and the biggest determining factors are tools, and time.
The biggest problem for a repair like this is rushing the project.
This is one of those things that you should not do when you are short on time. Usually problems come from being in too big of a hurry, so plan on having plenty of time. If something unexpected comes into the mix, you want to be able to deal with it when you aren't tired and aren't needing to get your phone back together in a hurry because it's your only phone. So factor into the equation you might need a backup phone and it may take more hours than originally planned.
Have a decent digital camera at your side and photograph the entire disassembly process so that when it's time to put it back together you have reference points instead of counting on remembering every little detail.

I dropped my Padfone X on concrete, and it broke the front glass! I've never broken a screen/glass on any phone before, and this was my first. With that being said, is there any way to cheaply repair it? Since it's just collecting dust, I can give it a try with one of the kits online. Does anyone suggest a kit? It seems like most solutions would cost just as much as a new one. Any help would be much appreciated!

Otherwise you could use this method as used on the Nexus 6, I doubt you have to disassemble as far.
But you would need the following:
Optically clear glue with UV light Kit $14.95 US
To apply new screen and set the glue
Molybdenum wire $7.99 US
To safely remove old glass with damaging the LCD underneath
Phone pry tool $5.00 US
To pry edge up to get molybdenum wire underneath
A replacement glass/digitizer if you can find one.
Some kind of heat source to heat up the glue to make easily removed without damaging LCD. A special hotplate is recommended, but a heatgun with finess and not getting LCD too hot will work or popping in oven at around 90 C or around 200 F for no more than 5 minutes until you can still touch it, just too hot to hold your finger on it.
Ultimately the first method would be cheaper after buying all the special tools for the tools and much easier. You could also buy a bricked Padfone X/S and swap motherboards
I dropped mine on concrete just because it slipped out of the dock (for which I *now* put a piece of velcro on the back in the case to keep it still). I opened up the device and took it apart but since I'm not as savvy as many with taking the digitizer apart, I just bought a new one on eBay for about $50 without the dock. You *could* get a new digitizer and equipment to install it (or even just buy a new face with the LCD and glass already around it, but for an extra $20 or so, you could just have a used phone which would work without the hassle. But IF it' in the dock, just keep it in the dock.

I want to open my Nexus 6P in the name of science
I´ve managed to open other devices before but this Nexus 6P somehow scares the living cr*p out of me when it comes to the visor glass :crying:
There is barely any gap between the glass and the Aluminum back and even a razor blade is barely thin enough to pass through.
I tried to heat the glass with a hairdryer and to carefully fit a razor blade between the glass and the case. I´m afraid that the thin razor blade cannot create a powerful lever and even if, this might cause the glass to burst.
Now I really wanted to open this device since I don´t care about the warranty anyway and use some nice 17W/mK thermal pads inside.
By any chance, did any of you already open this device before and is there a secret strategy maybe ?

The problem with the cheap glass is that a) I might have to wait for several weeks for it. If I only partially damage the glass while still maintaining the area for the camera, it would not be that bad. But what if the glass cracks this area too ? This is why I´d rather prefer to remove the visor glass in one single piece

I watched a strip down video of this phone a while back.....it did not look pretty. The glass visor on the back I believe was removed with a razor blade and if I remember correctly it did not crack. I would use a heat gun and heat the area to soften any glue before trying to pry it off.
In all honesty though, this device was not made to be stripped apart and put back together. I just don't see being able to strip the device and put it back together without leaving some sort of evidence that it had been taken apart lol.
This is the best teardown video I found. Using pieces of a soda can was a great idea and the phone looked intact around the glass and lower piece areas. Glass was in one piece as well. It's in my YT favourites in case I ever need it *knocks on wood*
PS: If you end up using this method (or any other), please let us know how it went.

Well, at least I had the heart to try it out I don´t have a heat gun and I guess it´s next to impossible to soften the glue without one. A regular hair dryer is too weak. I also tried to make some levers out of soda can parts but it´s useless if you cannot apply enough heat in order to soften the glue.
Maybe it´s possible if you wait for hours for the device to heat up with a hair dryer but you also damage the whole device because of the way you spread the heat.
I might try again later if I get a heat gun. This phone is really tough to open. Did anyone else already manage to open this device without some special equipment ?
@Gorgtech, I had to open my nexus 5 to replace the screen/digitizer. I purchased an $8.00 cell phone/small electronics toolkit from Walmart. It has magnetized screw drivers, plastic pry tools and a suction cup. I highly recommend it!
Thanks for the hint, I have some various tools which are OK for most repairs but only lack a heat gun. I´ve decided to get one in the end because it´s not as expensive as I thought before.
