[Q] How do I get a defective One replaced on T-Mobile? - T-Mobile HTC One (M7)

Just switched from Verizon to T-Mobile, and got an HTC One.This phone is amazing in every way and I fully intend to keep it for a very long time.
Mine does have a few of the issues affecting many models. Notably, there is a slight ledge where the glass meets the metal near my top speaker, which is felt every time I pull down the notification bar. Additionally, I have a small gap (very small, hardly noticeable) on the top and bottom speaker plates. Finally, I have one stuck pixel (read: always on) near the top of the display; I tried the various pixel-fix apps, but they were all unsuccessful at fixing the pixel.
Most of these are very minor complaints, but still, they are there. I bought the phone online from T-Mobile.com, got it brand new in the box a few days ago. What is the best route to have this replaced with another One? Should I call T-Mobile, call HTC, or go to a T-Mobile store? Also, are all replacements refurbished?
P.S. I have not rooted, s-off'd, or flashed any recoveries/ROMs (haven't felt the need so far on this phone!)

Just call Tmo if you got the insurance bindle you will get it in one business day. Great system if you did not then you will get it in 3-7 business days. Not all replacements are refurbished

Awesome, thanks cromo8. I've got a new One on the way. There was a $5 service fee, in case anyone else is wondering.

Just an update for those who may be going through the same process as me: I am currently on my second replacement unit. The first one they sent was a refurbished model, when I was told I'd be getting a new unit. The second, and the one I am on now also has a stuck pixel, and gap issues. I am contemplating getting a third replacement, but am starting to wonder if this is the best course of action. Will I get some kind of red flag on my account for so many calls/replacements? I will follow up with pictures for those interested.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 4 Beta

Hey MC.. I have the same exact issues you do except my stuck pixel is in the bottom left right above the back arrow. I have called in for a replacement and if you are within your remorse period you should be getting a brand new sealed retail packaged phone.. I have been sent 2 refurb phones already and am finally getting a brand new one sent out to me.. if they are processing you replacement thru warranty then you will def get a refurb.. gotta make sure the place a order for the phone as an upgrade.. you will be charged for the new phone unless you send the original back within a week.

I am now on my fourth HTC One, and this one appears to be (almost) perfect. The only very small issue with this unit is that the power button is very stiff. I think I can finally enjoy this seriously amazing device.

[RANT] Asurion headache - rebooting phones

After shattering my screen, I'm on my second EVO 3D sent by Asurion. Both reboot constantly. I can reproduce it on the second phone (which is remanufactured) - it happens after I turn the phone on to the lock screen, and let the phone sit there until it sleeps on its own. About 15 seconds after the screen goes dark, it reboots. Hardware version is 2.
So now asurion is sending me a third phone. Do they even test these phones that are sent back??? It seems they are sending me all the phones that wouldn't work because of constant reboots, without actually changing or "remanufacturing" anything!
Ahaha good luck. I have gone through 6-7 replacements before. Refurbs are horrible
Sent from my HTC Evo 3D.
Does this happen out of the box/with no apps?
When I broke my screen (like an idiot, never happened to me EVER) Asurion sent me a replacement phone, it was brand new (was like a month after the release of the 3D, didn't have refurbs then) and it did exactly the same thing yours did, so they sent a new one.
The one they sent (that I currently have) is flawless, don't get any reboots by itself, screen is straight, no dust under the screen or light leakage BUT it has one dead pixel on the bottom left, I tried to get it replaced, they did sent a new one, but that one had more dead pixels so I stuck with the one they first replaced. Unfortunately, I don't think they do test them but in my experience they had no issues sending a replacement for the replacement. It's a pain but at least you'll get one that works... eventually.
I am still on the first 3D I got from sprint 3 days before it was released to the public release. No problems. Couldn't be happier.

1 dead pixel on mine, got it pre launch day but the dead pixel came 2 months later. I deal with it.

Well, let em get to number 5 and then they will send you the check for the value of the phone and you get to go buy a brand new one.
It is amazing how crappy the quality of Asurion's replacements are.
I've always used blacktie through bestbuy but even then they don't test the phone unless you ask them too, example I had them replace the OG evo for me for a shattered screen and when I got it back the mic was busted. Because I had no idea it was busted before I gave it to them, they didn't check it and I got back a worthless phone lol.
If you get another bad phone, tell them you want a new one, not refurbished because of all the problems you have been having with them...I did that for my wife when she got her 3rd bad phone, and they sent the new one...maybe I just got lucky, but it wont hurt to ask.

Except my first replacement WAS new, but it rebooted constantly.
UPDATE: I'm on my third phone. This one froze 3 times in the first few hours, and I think it rebooted once, but hasn't frozen or rebooted since (in the subsequent ~20 hours). Crossing my fingers, especially since this is an HBOOT 1.3
I just dropped my 3D in water and have TEP so I'm covered. What HBOOTs are Assurion replacements coming with?
The common Hboots have been 1.40. At least in my experience.
I love asurion...gave me my last 3 upgrades free!
Well I'm sticking to this third phone. No reboots in 2 days (although I am getting a funny skipping problem in PlayerPro).
In summary, I got 2 new phones, both with HBOOT 1.30. I also got a refurb that was 1.50.
I definitely sympathize with your frustrations with Asurion. They're sending out terrible devices and I've yet to figure out what the cause is. I'm the lead tech at my Sprint S&R location and have exchanged a high number of these phones because of defective units shipped by Asurion.
The policy in all corporate Sprint S&R locations is to replace these devices in store instead of making customers go back through Asurion even though it's covered under the Asurion 1 year warranty. Granted they will most likely have to order it, but you'll still get it in the same amount of time it would take Asurion to send it, if not faster.
I would suggest asking a tech to replace your screen before spending the $100 on your deductible. I harvest screens just for this reason and replace them on a daily basis.
TL : DR - If it breaks Sprint can fix it. If Asurion sends it and it doesn't work, Sprint will replace it.
I would also make sure you factory reset each new phone you get before you use it! Fixes a lot of issues for phones!

AT&T replacement phones! Yes or no!

AT&T warranty replacement phones. Good or bad? I paid full price for my galaxy note. Had it for a month and a half. Still having problems connecting to internet on 4 g it freezes up. Now ATT wants to send me a replacement phone. I told them I do not want a refurbished phone through Assurion. This is not an insurance claim. It's a defective phone. What are the odds of my replacement phone actuay working good or bad? I paid full price for my note though getting a replacement. I am pissed off they will not give me a new phone. Anybody have experience with att replacement phones? They said the phone will not cone from assurion insurance. I'll believe it when I get the box.

I had similar issues with my Skyrocket. Went through 2 in a matter of 2 weeks and it was the update that was being pushed. Refused to take a referb phone because it was not my issue. Not the same as your situation, but still same philosophy. This phone is bad out of the box, and they need to replace it with a new item. This isn't your problem that it's defective, and why take someone else's defective garbage? Just keep talking (calmly) to support and get the local/regional managers involved if necessary. Sometimes, local/regional managers are more accepting and accommodating than corporate phone-jockeys. After the second skyrocket, I was offered any phone (except iPhone) and took the note. Also told NOT to send back skyrocket. So I have 2 great phones that once ICS is done for the skyrocket, it'll be a great unit again.
just my $0.02 worth for what it is.

So should I call back and ask for the head of the warranty dept? Or should I go into a corporate store and let them call and speak to a manager? I really don't want someone else's piece of crap that was already broken and fixed.

Be careful what you ask for. You might just get "old" new one that's been laying around.
On my warrantied Samsung Infuse...it was refurbished..same as new...and it ran MUCH better than my prior Infuse. And it was PERFECT condition and I assume newer parts?
I've been there and could not even tell the difference. My "refurbished" Infuse was perfect and ran better than my original "NEW".
Nothing to sweat over.
I just got mine and it looks brand new but it did say it was seed stock on my invoice

yes it was a white note..My old one's power button was no longer clicking and the bottom half would stick...the new one is great seems just as good as the old one and I'm running FJ's base ICS..I got a 3420 quadrant score
I just got a note replacement yesterday. My old note was a month and a half old and it was having problems charging. I got a refurbished one and it seems to run a lot better than my old one. It was in perfect condition and had the "don't text while driving" screen protector and everything. Even came with the stylus. Now I have two styluses.

You also have to remember that refurbished doesn't always mean something was wrong with it. It could be that the person returned the phone because they didn't like it and att can't sell as new anymore.
My sister only buys refurbished to save money, and she has had no issues. I had issues with my brand new note and with my atrix last year. It's just a matter of luck. And asurion is not involved with warranty unless the warranty period is over and you have to file an insurance claim.
Edit: like lildoggs said, they also seem to send a stylus. I kept it and they never charged me anything

When people return their phones within the 30 day period and pay the restocking fee...those phones end up being sold as "refurbished" also. So you might get one that is berely used...or "like" new. My brother did that with his sony xperia and it ended up being pretty much brand new condition one. But it says refurbished. Dont quote me on this but most of the time...AT&T sends out great condition refurbished phones. 9 out of 10 people cant tell a refurb from a new phone
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke

Assurion is a really good company. Returned is not bad, in fact a lot of times it can be better than new.
Is 4g and WiFi connection an issue with the note? Thats one of the reasons I am more than likely returning my hoxl.
Are the notes probed to connectivity issues or is this just a typical defective issue?
Sorry for so many questions. I been playing with the note recently and love it.

yeah mine had the text and driving sticker too and i kept the "spare" spen
I'm so sorry to hear people got defective unit's not good at all
I've had my Note for almost 2 months so far so good no issues as of yet...
I do have ATT Warrinity if I lose it or Drop my device they will replace my device for me I do not know if it will be additional charge...

My EVO LTE's camera is wacked out. Major problem

2 days ago yy EVO 4G LTE had the black screen problem. I am not rooted and have a stock setup. My camera worked fine since I purchased the phone June 3rd. The next morning I checked the phone and the camera was again working. However it developed a horrendous image quality issue (which I blieve is different from the oversaturated colors issue reported by many). Other parts of the phone was acting weird like hanging and locking up so I did a hard reset. I wiped out everything clean and now the phone seems fine however the camera is still messed up. Even the viewfinder (pre-picture) looks wacked out. When I take the picture this is what I get below. The photos taken in good lighting look horrible. So something is obiously wrong with the camera on this phone since the hard reset didn't cure my problem.
Anyone seen this before?
That to me looks like you have one of the special effects turned on. Hot the round circle button and see if you have it see on "no effect".

Sounds to me like you just have a bad phone. Man. Get that thing replaced if your having all these issues
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
have you tried to restore default in camera setting
Granted, this was taken in different, but the red dots in the OP's remind me of the "posterize" setting I used to take this picture. I did notice, though, that once I backed out and back into the camera, the setting automatically restored to "no effect. "
Sent from my EVO LTE using Tapatalk 2
Looks like an issue with the camera module. Not sure how much luck you'll have doing this on the LTE, but the original Evo used to occasionally have similar issues, and it was because the camera module came loose form the board it was sitting on. You could just disassemble the phone and reseat the module. However, if you have the option of doing so, taking it in for a proper repair would definitely be the better option; disassembling the LTE looks like it's way more of a pain than its predecessor.
I had this happen on my old G1, looked EXACTLY like that. But that's how it came out of the box. It didn't happen all the time so I didn't take it back. But I would see if you could yours replaced?

He's not having a software issue, that's a hardware problem. OP, take it back and get a new one.
Thanks for the replies. It's definitely a hardware issue. After the hard reset I went into the camera settings just to be sure and they were at default settings. I stopped by Best Buy last night where I purchased it. The agent check it out and confirmed he thought it was hardware related. Unfortunately for me I didn't buy the Best Buy protection plan so since it's been 60 days since purchase I had to contact HTC to get it repaired. So when I got home I called HTC and they were cool. They gave me an RMA to send it back to get it fixed/replaced. Unfortunately the turn around time is 2 weeks which means I'm without a Sprint phone in the meantime. I'll have to rely on my ****ty Verizon Blackberry Bold. I have an old LG optimus that I tried to reactivate temporarily but I got an online warning from Sprint that I will lose my SERO Premium 500. So considering how much of pain it was to get the EVO LTE on Sero it wasn't worth the risk.
Is it common for HTC to just replace the phone or will they tear it apart and fix the camera on the phone?
Yep, if all updates and improvement mods have no effect, definitely a hardware issue. Return it!

It sounds like in this case you're getting a warranty replacement, which is normal. I haven't actually heard of HTC actually just repairing your existing device, that's what the service & repair shops from your carrier (Sprint) or vendor (Best Buy) are for.

Now I'm wondering if this is the case. I sent the phone out this morning following HTC's instructions. One of the instructions was to remove any batteries, battery cover, or micro SD card. Don't think they would do this if they were going to send a new phone would they? At least in terms of the battery cover. in my case with the EVO LTE I removed my 16GB sd card and removed the camera cover then sent the phone to HTC.

Why didn't you just go to Sprint? They would've most likely replaced it on the spot for you. I've never sent any phone back to HTC if I had issues. I went right to Sprint and they 9 times out of 10 replaced the phone for me on the spot. If they didn't have the phone they sent it to my house and I got it 2 days later.
Bad Photos
I had to replace two phones within 2 days because of the crappy camera. I almost droped Sprint because of this issue. I still may if they don't start providing me with LTE service. I'm beginning to wonder why I paid so much for a phone that I can't full benefilt from. I downloaded a lot of photos to my computer and looked at them in Photo Shop. They were so far off in almost every area. I would love to be able to calibrate the screen on this unit. Does any one know if you can do this? Every screen I have seen from this phone has been different.

Because I bought the phone at Best Buy. Not the Sprint store.
Boy am I pissed off. I truly regret buying this phone now. I mailed the phone back to HTC on August 6th. They told me I'd have it back in 2 weeks. I've been following the HTC status tracking and it's showed my phone as "In repair" for several days. Then today, 15 days after I sent the phone back, I get an email update from HTC. It states "This ticket has been placed on hold for material at our Repair Center. We are currently awaiting the following part(s): Main Board
Once we have the part(s), we will fix your phone as quickly as possible."
I've been without a phone for over 2 weeks. Can't they just replace it with a new phone and then sell my old phone as a refurb? It's not like I had the phone for a year and I'm trying to swindle them. I just want an operable phone. I'm done with HTC at this point. My next phone will not be an HTC.
Will Sprint give me a service credit since my phone hasn't even been connected to their network?

First off, good luck waiting for your parts from taiwan. I have been waiting for my phone, that I sent in for the camera on July 26th. Still no
Phone. Sprint says next time take it in, pay 35$, walk out with a replacement. And I bought it at best buy, but sprint said it don't matter.
Like I said, good luck.

Wish I would've known that. I'd have paid $35 no problem to get a replacement.
I called HTC and asked if they had more info on how long this would take. Their answer was "No". They admitted the parts were coming rom Tiawan. I was nice to her but she could tell I was pissed. Next time I will go to the Sprint store first

I see alot of these problem's going on and people geting worst phone's back so instead of playing the return and hope to get a good one game I have contacted HTC with the problem they are aware of the problem and will fix the phone for free ( you just pay shipping to them ) and promise and perfect display when it leave's so I will post back ( about 2 week's...) to see if they really did fix it right.

So I purchase a product from them that does not meet their own standards? Then I have to pay to ship it back to them, and then wait 2 weeks for the device I just purchased. Yikes!
Yeah that is not right...I argued the best they could do is pay shipping back..time's like this is when I wish I had Att so I could go right to the store...( have stright talk reason why I bought it online ) If I do send it back I will have no phone for 2 week's wish they would do what apple doe's and send a new phone first but they won't.

They wouldn't do an advanced replacement?

Had a dead pixel on my One I picked up yesterday and I went back in and exchanged it. I can live with the screen gap but I'll be damned if I have to stare at a dead pixel for 2 years. Once you know it's there, it's all you can think about.
I got a replacement yesterday. It had a dead pixel. Just a single one but it drove me crazy and my eyes would constantly gravitate to it. Fought with them all morning because they told me to exchange it in a store, no stores are carrying the 64gb in inventory so they said they would send me a return label and once they get this device send me another. I called back multiple times and fought with multiple people. Eventually I got a supervisor that made it so they send me the replacement first, then I send back this one. It took a lot of fighting and a lot of calls but they eventually did it. The supervisor actually had to get approval from her supervisor. It was a hellish morning and I'm glad I finally got it sorted. Already got an email about the order for the replacement so that's a good sign. Man their customer service has taken a nosedive. It never used to be this difficult to do an exchange. When the last rep answered "thank you for calling att where pur customers are the #1 priority I couldn't help to laugh and say 'that's not true'"

That is exactly how I look at it, I don't care how small it is if I know it is there I will keep looking for it...Needless to say I returned the phone I am scared to buy another one even all the one's I seen in person have dead pixel's somewhere on the screen.
What color on the screen did you notice the dead pixel?

Its still under warranty, why do you have to pay S&H?
I got mine today and no dead pixels or gaps I'm so lucky

it's lack of quality control ,they should recall them back, and replacement all device free
i have strong OCD. so i can not stand that, even only one dead pixel
Lucky you. Can you post your manufacturing details?

Was this through ATT or HTC? the jerks at HTC said they wont pay for shipping or replace .. just a repair and it will take 10 business days for me to get my phone back .. WTF ... HTC and Samsung need to get on Apple's level of Product Troubleshooting and Exchanges ...

This was through AT&T. If you are an AT&T customer, I would check to see if there is a warranty center in your area. They will usually make an exchange on the spot. Otherwise, call AT&T and they will send out a replacement right away and you just mail in your defective phone when you receive the new one.
I bought my phone used, does the 1 year manufacture warranty carry over to me, even though I'm not the original owner?
What are you using to find dead pixels with, they are quite small. I know certain screens/colors will reveal them nicely.
I had one dead pixel on my first HTC one it also had the speaker grill cut incorrectly. I decided to do a exchange for the same one and this one is perfect no issues. To check for dead pixels use this app it's great also shows ghosting ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.ujacha.deadpixel&hl=en). I love this phone btw hope this helps anyone.

It should because the warranty is on the device, not the person.

New vs Refurbished

ok so i bought a second hand note 2(month old) still looks new and everything (slight knicks)
i flashed and softbricked it...called Verizon they will send me a refurbished model! how sweet
but afterwards, I fixed it(stock-->flash/root)
so i have a choice of keeping my current one vs refurbished model.
which would you choose? is Refurbished a BAD choice?
I would go with the month old note my friend!! Especially if you have tested it (after rooting) and you are satisfied... I have a 6 month old Note2 and besides a couple of side scratches it works as well if not better as when it was a week old.... At the end though: Trust Your Instinct

yeah I'm leaning 75% to keeping the one I have
refurbished model will have completely new outside(a plus) but inside may be failing bc of the refurbishing process
but! then i don't know exactly how old my current phone is ...as it is a second hand and apparently warranty does not apply when bought second hand and they are giving me a replacement which is nice...
what to do ...
I want to know how you got them to send you anything if you bought the phone second hand? They normally don't just give phones away....
Will they be renewing your contract?
Did you even ask them if it would?
Whats up?
VZW isn't nice.... ever.

I'm pretty sure it is because it was a defect/the phone is under manufacture's warranty. In other words, VZW isn't losing money off of it.
I've had two get two refurbished models due to defects, so as long as your phone works perfectly fine I wouldn't risk it.
Or he could have the extended service plan. It covers all kinds of stuff.

I say you should not be rooting and messing up your phone on your own and then taking it in saying its defective.
That is what has been ruining the return process for people who actually get defective phones.

As long as anything works well I would take the refurbished. Make sure to check the headphone jack though - my note 2 is refurbished and the jack has a short in it (headphones only work when they are plugged in a certain way).

So why don't you just have them send you another? I really doubt that this is a common issue with refurbs. My phone just stopped charging a while back. I got a refurb and it's perfectly fine, as a bonus my original one did have a scratch that annoyed the hell out of me
