guys i need a help.
my friend baught htc hero european version yesterday. today i connected it with office wifi with wep and it worked like charm. then i upgraded his hero to modaco 2.8 and found wifi not working. wifi turns on but cant obtain ip from dhcp. i turned on manual ip but it cant browse internet. i restored from nandroid still cant browse internet.
any idea what can be done. my friend has become very upset.
btw... i tried 1.6 donut and still cudnt obtain ip from dhcp. and it can connect to open networks.
i also had wifi problems with 2.8. I just downgraded back to 2.7 and everything worked again. Try downgrading back to 2.7 with the update.zip
Have you updated the radio on the phone also?
If not, I would suggest that you do. Here's the link.
http://android.modaco.com/content/h.../09-10-hero-roms-radios-in-update-zip-format/
i dont get whats with the radio update and all.
will someone explain to me why is it important to upgrade radio?
shouldnt the ROM be enough?

The "radio" is the firmware that controls the "phone" aspects of the handset, making calls, connecting to internet, wifi, GPS, GSM and lots of other things. Basically all the functions that use radiowaves or are wireless on the phone.
When upgrading to the custom ROMs, always read the instructions. Part of Modaco's posts regarding upgrading state that he would strongly installing the latest radios (through the link I previously supplied). If you don't follow the instructions properly, you're asking for trouble.
Everybody please note: There is nothing wrong with 2.8.
Important is to wipe completely and reformat and repartition sd card. Everything will work.
I've done some searching but haven't been able to find a solution to this issue.
Basically, the wifi on my phone just 'dies' after a minute or so with any rom or kernel that I flash other than stock. It even dies after flashing CWM or DD/Siyah kernel onto stock rom.
Any ideas on why??? My Captivate was like a tank and stood up to all sorts of flashing abuse and bad flashes. It seems this sgs2 is similar...with the exception of the wifi. On all roms but stock it seems that if I disable the wifi, then re-enable it then it will work for a minute...then die again. very frustrating.
please give me some clues
Thanks,
What router do you have? And what rom's have you tried?
Have you tried using other modems for our phone? Just wondering if maybe your router only likes the stock modem and when you're flashing other roms, it might be changing you to a modem your router disagrees with. It's just a suggestion, trying to think outside the box. There are two sets of modem builds, just make sure you get the right ones for the right roms. Also try flashing the stock KH7 modem back over the custom rom. I'm no developer so WTF do i know. Just trying to help a brother out. Good luck.
I've tried with both an Asus RTN12 as well as an older Airlink 101. Both B/G/N routers which I've tried the stock firmware as well as dd-wrt. They are setup using channel 1, WPAPSK/AES. Behavior is the same whether the router is set to 20Mhz or 40Mhz. Both routers are based off an RaLink chipset. I don't have a router based on Broadcom (yet).
As for Roms....
UnNamed
ICScrewD
ICS'd out
Coz
Serendipity
By modem I assume that's listed as 'baseband' in the about section of the settings. Stock shows KH7. I've flashed the stock kk6 rom and just checked and it remains kh7 (flashed with Odin).
I did an OTA update to kk6 but neglected to check the modem that was installed with it.
Regardless, the wifi worked as designed under both older and newer stock roms.
I'll flash a rom this weekend and then flash modems to see if I can narrow it down. I'm in the process of moving so the next day or two are sort of out of the question
I personally like WPA2 better (especially with dd-wrt), but to each their own. What do you have your wifi-sleep policy set to? (settings>Wireless->Wifi settings>Press menu button->advanced.)

Sorry, it is WPA2PSK, but I've tried both.
Wifi sleep policy is set to never.

If your phone is a Samsung i777 AT&T model and you want to get
your wifi working properly then simply download UnNamed v2.2.1
custom rom which is the very best custom rom currently available
for our phones. The UnNamed rom also has superior battery life.
The UnNamed v2.2.1 Custom Rom is not only the most stable and reliable
custom rom but it's also the most aesthetically pleasing rom which is currently
available for our phones. (i777 AT&T)
Since you have tried so many things already be sure that before flashing
another rom that you go into settings>privacy and select "factory data reset".
Then be 100% sure that you have done a "wipe data/factory" reset using
CWM Recovery before flashing another custom rom.
After you flash the UnNamed rom you will no longer have any wifi problems at all.
Be sure that after flashing the rom you make a nandroid backup of the rom
before you install any apps and or before for who knows what god forsaken reason
you should want to change or flash a different kernel rather than leaving it alone
and use the excellent kernel which the rom comes with.
Good Luck!
You sound like an advertisement for UnNamed
Seriously though...I have tried UnNamed from 2.1.1 to 2.2.1
ICScrewD from 1.4 to 1.6.1, etc.
Wifi completely breaks if I flash the CWM or any kernel over the stock. I've flashed so many roms, kernels, and modems over the past 2 weeks I couldn't even begin to count how many.
Just out of curiosity, have you tried connecting to wifi on a different router, like at work or a friends house...? Have you tried resetting your routers? With all that you've tried, it's just strange that you still can't get a connection.

I intentionally left the baseband separate from my UCKK6+root package because people often want to run a different modem than system.
Flashing a new baseband will do nothing for wifi - everyone who tells you that is too accustomed to HTC phones where Qualcomm AMSS runs EVERYTHING.
It's strange if anything but stock fails for you... UCKK6 wouldn't surprise me because it has all sorts of weird BCM4330 (wifi/bluetooth) problems, but I haven't heard of wifi regressions with my kernel when flashed on UCKH7.

Yeah... It's a little annoying. Yeah, Unnamed is an excellent firmware, but "best" is a matter of taste. It's funny that he's pimping a firmware when the firmware dev almost blocked him for that damn penis-gecko.

Logging into a router at work wont do any good since i work from home. the neareat open wifi network is out of range. I did log in to chic fil a once but unfortunately i dont remember the reaults....my mind was focused on lunch.
I have also reset both routers i have here. tried different firmwares foe the routers as well but got the same result...but both of my routers are based on ralink chipsets. two different ralink chipsets at that, but still made by ralink.

I forgot to mention, before you flash the UnNamed v2.2.1 custom rom
be SURE to flash the ODIN based CWM Recovery kernel, not the
CWM flashable kernel to start with.
(because who knows whiich kernel you have now since you have flashed so many)
Below is the ODIN flash CWM Recovery kernel which you should have
flashed in the first place when coming from the stock to custom rom.

Try resetting the security type in the wireless modem/ router to a personal wireless security and try it out. I had some issues with Wifi but after the resetting of the router, the wifi has been working fine.
In the advanced wifi settings, enable up to channel 14, and set your router to channel 11+40mhz (150mbps) and see if that works. Channel 1 might have too much interference for this phone or something... not sure.
Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't channels beyond 11 for out of US region?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777
From Wikipedia "In the USA, 802.11 operation in the channels 12 and 13 is actually allowed under low powered conditions. "
And its not like the FCC drives around looking for routers broadcasting in those channels, our routers are too weak to broadcast that far. But you're just enabling up to channel 14, doesn't mean that you're going to use it.
WiFi Fail MAC address Bluetooth address Unavailable
I am basically at the same point..WiFi Fail..It will scan and then turn back off. Started off with a stock phone..Followed the customizations steps..No problems reading the Flash Counter..Ran step 2c..It worked Great..passed..had UCKH7 but had no WiFi..Did the wipe data/factory reset as mentioned in other threads and WiFi returned..Then I did the OTA update to UCKK6 and WiFi was still working. So I downloaded Mobile Odin Pro from the market so I could complete step 3a. I had already extracted the zImage from Entropy's 1208 DD and placed it on my sd card. Ran MO on the phone selected the zImage and it ran flawlessly. I am still rooted and have CWM 5.0.2.7..but the WiFi shuts off again shortly after turning it on..So I tried the wipe data/factory reset again but it did not help this time. As far as I can tell everything else works great on the phone, calls, texts and so on...But after looking at some of the about phone settings..I noticed that both the MAC address and Bluetooth Address lines show unavailable...and I think that is why the WiFi shuts back down shortly after turning it on..Now I was going to move onto step 4 and flash UnNamed ROM for practice and then go back to stock using the guide..but I was wondering if I missed something important that caused the WiFi issue
What are the first 6 characters of your mac address? (on stock) At this point... I'm thinking they might have changed the wifi chip or something...

Currently under... Settings..About Phone..Status..Wi-Fi MAC address & Bluetooth address show "Unavailable"
But since I have an access list enabled on my router...I would say my MAC address started with 04:46:65 I'll be able to verify that when I get it back.
I'm going to try another wipe and a different Entrophy Kernel and see what happens. I know I can get WiFi back by going through the steps again and I enjoy all the tinkering..so I just wanted share some of the stuff I was seeing.
I've been having this issue for a few days now and I haven't been able to solve it myself. I've been using a GB rom for the past few months (this one and it's always been working fine. Still, I wanted to try ICS so I got myself to install CM9 on the device, and while I was at it, updated the baseband to 72. However, since then, I've been unable to connect to Wifi. I can see Wifi networks, but as soon as I try to connect it gets stuck on "Connecting". I tried flashing other ICS roms and restoring the baseband, nothing works. Yesterday I put the rom back that I've been using succesfully over the past months but still no difference.
When I scan for networks, they appear fine. Reception is good, but as soon as it tries to connect the icon changes to the icon for poor reception. It doesn't matter what network I pick. Other devices running Android have no problem connecting.
Does anyone have an idea what might cause this issue? Is there any way to get a logging of the Wifi to see what exactly goes wrong? Any troubleshooting steps I could take? Your help would be very much appreciated
edit: forgot to mention, with CM9 I used the CM9 kernel, with other roms I use Rage kernel
in exactly the same situation as above, except it was all working just fine until a couple of hours ago. now suddenly the router that's sitting right in front of me, giving full signals has turned into a "poor connection"!!!
i'm on CM9 with CM9 kernel and the recommended baseband
especially suspicious is the facebook application that just got updated when it was working fine a couple of hours or so back. hasn't worked since that update

Flashed the Wifi module, did a factory reset and it's connected! Thank you so much
my problem solved as well. i didn't read rachit.rc96's reply so i solved it the hard way
was previously on baseband 72, flashed baseband 64 then 72 back again, no luck, went back to gingerbread, rooted then was able to connect to only one of my routers, the other one wasn't even showing up then flashed stock ics rooted that, now able to connect to both routers.
was that a problem with cm9 i wonder. or what?
Hi All,
This is going to sound weird, but I have tried everything and im still stuck. I have gone through the searches but unable to find a solution.
I have an i9300 International (Australian, through Optus), and it's fine except for one issue. When i flash and run a Cyanogenmod build, or basically any NON-Official (Paranoid Android, AOKP and even AOSP) ROM WiFi just REFUSES to connect to any access points. On offical ROM's (from any region) its fine.
I have tried multiple access points, every WiFi encryption, including Open, but it just does not connect. It can see WiFi networks however. I have tried multiple CM builds and others, but once again only Official ROM's work.
Has anyone else experienced this? And found a solution?

You must flash stock ICS rom with odin first, and the flash CM10 to have a working Wifi connection.
or flash XXLH1 Modem and that should fix it.
Could someone please explain why these steps must be done to get WiFi to work, and what needs to happen to eliminate this?
I have tried all these steps and it still did not work. Friends has the same phone, and we did the exact same steps with the exact same ROM's, his WiFi worked, mine did not.
I just can't understand why mine would be so different..

if you have tried flashing another kernel.. and it still didn't work.
you must send it back to the service center as it may be a factory/hardware defect

Hi to all master here.
Sorry if my question had been asked before, but i really can't find any solution for that.
Phone: Xperia Mini Pro
FW: Stock ICS 4.0.4 (.587) with stock kernel
Problem: When connect to router secured with WPA/WPA2, my phone non-stop looping between 'authenticating -> saved -> authenticating -> repeat..." and can't obtained IP address. While WEP is OK with my current SMC router, but failed with D-Link. No problem for open wifi. So if i go to those coffee shop with free WIFI, i have to try my luck because most of them are secured by password. So far all failed with WPA/WPA2 security.
I never encounter such problem on previous GB 2.3.4 FW, all until i update to ICS 4.0.4.
I read alot of similar problem for Xperia Mini Pro user, seems like no countermeasure for that.
Effort to countermeasure this problem:
1. Factory reset.
2. Repair FW using PC companion.
3. Downgrade to GB 2.3.4 and update to ICS 4.0.4 again.
4. Fresh ICS 4.0.4 install (Flashtool, wipe data).
5. Flash Lupus kernel.
All the countermeasure above can't solve my problem. Do you guys have any idea? Flash custom ROM?
Thanks in advance.

Bro, thanks for the link, i will try it once i get back home.
Anyway, is this wifi modules same as modules in stock ICS 4.0.4? What's the purpose of this flashing if there are same?
I would like to know the purpose and reason for this flash.
Thanks in advance.

Some of the kernels do not have the wifi modules included in the ramdisk and hence you have to flash the wifi modules manually, although flashing a stock rom should take care of everything. Still, no harm in trying. Also, whenever you change from gb to ics always wipe the data. These are ics 4.0.4 modules.

Hmm, as i mentioned previously, i tried update to ICS from GB without wipe data, with wipe data also no luck. I believe the kernel already built in the wifi modules, else i won't able to connect at all. The main problem is can't connect if the security (be it WEP, WPA/WPA2) is enabled in router, no problem is security disable.
Anyway, i will try later.

Ok, bro, let's make things clear.
Now this problem is happen after i using ICS, GB no problem at all. Downgrade to GB i can use wifi even lock with WEP, WPA or whatever security. So it should be ROM/OS problem rather than router.
I can configure my router to work with my phone, but the main problem is we can't control/configure those public router setting @ public place, or others WIfi router, let say @ ur friends house, do we? So the root cause is phone itself, that's why i'm asking question here. But seems many forumers will ask us to configure the router rather than solve the problem in phone.
I hope u get what i mean.
Anyway, tried the wifi modules in stock kernel, still same, and Lupus kernel already have built in wifi modules.
Thanks.

Tonight i just come back from 2 cafe, both of them using WPA security, failed to connect to them at all, all same problem, authenticating then can't find IP address and non stop looping. So if the root cause is the router, means the router in whole world also got problem, i don think so.
Regarding the ftf file u suggested, i did download from there yesterday i do a clean install by flashtool (wipe data), can't solve also.
Sometimes i'm curious. As I said GB rom no problem, problem only arise on ICS ROM, why ppl still saying is router problem? The sonymobile link is just useless, as their 'official' statement of course will not blame is their own problem. My gf with the same phone with me with GB rom can connect to all routers that with security enabled, so how to explain is router problem rather than ROM itself??
Today just tried downgrade to GB, then update to ICS 4.0.4 with exclude baseband, still the problem remained. Seems like really can't solve anymore. Stock ICS 4.0.4 baseband is ver.77, now i'm using GB stock 2.3.4 baseband ver.56. Flashed to 70, 42 also same.
If you are using LuPuS stock kernel then you need to flash the wifi modules.
Mesa and Panic did not reqiure it. Mesa has modules integrated into ramdisk while panic uses stock modules.
Krsh Kernel also requires wifi modules for wifi to eork properly.
