In my opinion TWRP is feature rich while CWM is much more straight forward.

i found TWRP to be easier to use. i tried to use CWM a few times, but was getting some errors...probably because i didn't have the latest version of it or something. so i was told to try out TWRP, and i never looked back. it had Loki built in and it has a great layout of all the necessary functions.
i'm sure both function fine though.

That is entirely personal opinion. Both can do all the same stuff and get the job done. I myself prefer TWRP but it is not because it is better, I just like the UI and theme better, built in keyboard and file manager are also nice.

I prefer twrp 2.5.0.2 . I'm not a fan of the controls and menu layout in cwm.
Twrp 2.5.0.3 isn't as stable as 2.5.0.2 in my experience however. There is a flashable zip for .2 in the twrp thread for those who want to "downgrade"

They are both great recoveries. I love the fact you can mass wipe dalvic cache, system, data, and cache in one swipe using TWRP, but I have to use CWM to flash Hyperdrive.
Another vote for TWRP here. Backups are much smaller compared to CWM as well.
Twrp has worked flawlessly for me

No, but it isn't necessary. Have you seen a single kernel or recovery that's been posted and wasn't already loki'd?
TWRP is what I started using on my TF700T, simple to use and never had an issue with it. That's what I stick with.

Changed the name of your nandroids using shabbys recovery? I was just thinking about that but I didnt want to mess any of my nands up .Im thinking of going back to twrp but idk .
Twrp supports extFAT and my 64 GB sdcard.

I don't use either one. I have found my S4 runs very fast using PhilZ Touch Recovery. It is touch base and supports exFat and ext4. When it does a wipe it wipes the System also.
Another for TWRP. Coming from the Bionic and having safestrap 3.05 and then 3.11 it was based on TWRP 2.2.2.1 or something if i recall correctly. A friend uses CWM on his GS2 Skyrocket and thought I'd have to use it but now he's also on TWRP.
I'm using for all the same reasons, it does everything needed and great UI and built in keyboard. never had a failed anything.

I have TWRP 2.0 on my Evo 3D. I'm new to rooting and have yet to use CWM recovery. Can anyone explain what is the difference and why it would be better to use one over the other. I do really like the touch interface of TWRP. Thanks.
At this point it's more of personal preference than features.
I'm also on TWRP 2.0 and if it ain't broke, I'm not fixin' it.
What freeza said. I personally, had issues with TWRP2 & went back to TWRP 1. CWM works well too but not the touch version from what i hear (havent tried it yet)

Thanks. I haven't had any problems with TWRP at all so maybe I'll stick with it. Just didn't know if there were features in CWM that I was missing.
as long as it wipes & flashes everything right, i'd stick with what you got.

this is pretty much how i am.
and i have never had a problem with either one so i can't really say. i was on CWM when i first rooted back in july, switched to the updated TWRP (not touch) and only did it because it had features that i thought would make using recovery a little more convenient like flashing multiple zips at once, etc, and because scott was nice enough to zip it up for us to flash through boot loader. quick and painless for us 1.4 users.

I'm Hboot 1.5 and liked the CWM touch and the fact that its integrated into Rom Manager, but I also like the TWRP and the ability to pick as many zips as I want before flashing. Add FlashImageGUI.apk to either of these and I no longer care about s-off. My vote is for TWRP

thats for sure!! last time i tryed cwm i thought something was wrong when i was flashing stuff because it took sooo long.. twrp is much faster i think..
does twrp have the charging bug ?
I think it is not a matter of which is best, but some devs install scripts will not work for CMW touch or TWRP 2+. I use TWRP 1.1.1 but recommend asking the dev what he uses.
i just tryed twrp 1.1.1 and every time i try and flash a kernel it wont let me??? thats why i always come back to twrp 2.0..
Koush is giving the world access to his buildbot to test out the new version of CWM. So I decided to give it a whirl. Offers incremental backups making them much smaller and faster.

To install
1. Download file to your computer
2. In command line, navigate to the folder you have the recovery
3. Reboot phone into fastboot
4. "fastboot flash recovery recovery-CWM-6.0.0.0-ruby.img"
5. "fastboot reboot"
6. Reboot Phone into recovery as normal
Anyone test it as yet other than you? Would be cool to see this in action, good post, many of those who wanted CWM will love you for it, lol.
As far as I could tel I was the first to build a ruby version. I just pulled the 5.0.2.8 CWM and used that as a base and had it build a touch version. I tried getting it to use the stock recovery but the only one I could find was from the all-in-one toolkit and it built, but the recovery had trouble mounting points so I didn't upload it here.
I've always been a fan of CWM but that's prolly mostly because that's what I familiar with. I've used it since my G1.
So it can flash kernels???
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using Tapatalk 2
It was built off of 5.0.2.8 so I would have to guess that you would have to be S-OFF to flash kernels. I am S-OFF and am the only one I know of running it.

FINALLY, A FRICKING RECOVERY THAT JUST WORKS.
Jesus, I tried every recovery I could find.
I'm not mentally impaired, so I do understand (and preffer) to use fastboot, and all other recoveries either required a download of an app to do the work for you or they just plain wouldn't boot (I'm looking at you, EXT4 touch binary...)
Plus it's well documented and it's a real developer friendly recovery, not so user oriented. I love it.

or you can just flash the 4EXT recovery image from my toolkit. That is another way. 4EXT wants the app installed so it can tell you about updates and let it update by itself.

ok help?
so my question is does this allow the install of kernels with a rom not separately? Next question is if im rooted with s-off and a locked boot loader can i install this by recovery like along time ago.
Hello -
I have browsed through countless threads and obviously overlooking something for a successful root.
I was able to root using option #3 in the following thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894. All went without issue and I see the SuperUser application on the phone.
However, I cannot get into Clockwork. Holding the power buttons and power button only takes me in the typical Android reset menu.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
You don't have rom manager installed hopefully. If not, you simply power your phone off , hold down volume up down and power until it reboots KEEP holding it it may flash the boot logo more than once then it should take you into clock work mod recovery. Also keep in mind you need a custom kernel to have clockwork mod recovery installed, as our kernels have recovery built in.

Thanks for the assistance. No --- I do not have ROM Manager installed. The button sequence only takes me into the typical Android menu that has four options. Going from memory: Reboot, apply update.zip, factory reset, clear cache. It's not the Clockwork menu...I'm familiar with it.
I guess that means that the following link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894 only roots the phone and I need to apply a custom kernel. If so, do I have to find a custom kernel and apply through ODIN since I cannot flash through Clockwork? If so, can you give me a link on how to do this?
Thanks.

You just installed the stock kernel with stock 3e recovery. You now need to install a custom kernel. Go to this thread, which is the full directions for rooting and installing a ClockworkMod Recovery enabled kernel.
Also since you're rooted, you can flash kernels with mobile Odin if ya want, it's on the Android market. Is free to flash roms gotta pay for it to flash kernels and stuff but it's well worth it in my opinion.

ClockworkRecoveryMod is more compatible with ROMs and mods that they post on XDA. TWRP, I think that is the other recovery you are talking about, has a better UI and seems to have more functionality over CWR but sometimes, ROMs and Mods need to be patched from .zip's written for CWR. Hope this helps. This is just a general way of looking at it. I'm sure there is more info elsewhere. Oh, also, CWR is like the OG of recovery mods, and TWRP is like the other G but not the OG. Haha, and effects? Not sure what you mean by that but both do about the same thing.

For me the main difference is the ability to name and rename backups that TWRP has. You can't really go wrong, they're both REALLY nice recoveries on the DNA.
I use TWRP but have used CWM too, both devs are really active in recovery development and very qualified. My previous device, I would have told you one specific recovery you had to use until recently. There was one kind of recovery that just always worked and the others didn't.
That's not at all the case with the DNA, both recoveries available are excellent. I just happen to prefer TWRP because of the layout, the way you can check the partitions you want to wipe and then swipe to confirm and get em all at once. And it also lets you queues multiple zip files and when you press install it will do them all at once. And TWRP has some beautiful themes if that's important to you. I dont often theme recovery though because the stock one looks just fine.
does cm 10.1 require clockworkmod? it might not be the case anymore but i thought you needed clockworkmod auto update with cm?
TWRP is better : actual touchscreen support, great backups(compressable to save space) lots of options, good interface, allows "ota" style rom updates through goomanager
Those on MK2 With safe strap and want to get rid of Touch Wiz ( which I do -.-) Get the Illusion ROM for your Galaxy S4 (Verizon). That's all. If you guys are on 4.2.2, it would make since if it was a gpe rom, as gpe was somehow compatible with 4.2.2 safestrap. If I remember correctly, someone said that the differences between the kernels was negligible and could boot with the tw kernel.
I would say its safe to assume that its actual AOSP seeing that it uses the CM kernel source (or at links to it on the OP), however, there are no accounts in the thread of the rom cook saying that it is AOSP, only other posters.
Haven't tried to download it yet, but I'm going to convince myself that you guys are just pulling a sick April fools prank.

Well so far it's AOSP ROM. It has pure android, the weight of the zip is so light and if. And yes, A Dev did say it wasn't compatible with any AOSP ROM's. But I found a ROM that works! I'll post some screen shots of the AOSP ROM. And if it says AT&T its because I have a Straight Talk Sim Card in it.
So far people are eager with this. If we can get more people's attention we can probably get Hashcode to see what's making this ROM work on AOSP
