Samsung launches firmware update for Galaxy S4 (APPS TO SD!!) - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I looked and didnt see this info here in the forum so I figured I should post it. If it has already been posted I apologize. Anyway if not here it is. Samsung has released a firmware update to allow moving of apps to external SD. This is due to the 16gb not actually being that, but more like 9gb. I for one think this is great news. Especially considering I just ordered a new Class 10 micro SD and it will be here today. It is currently only rolling out in Germany, but Im sure it will get here. And even if it doesnt Im sure some cool dev can make it work for us!!! Anyway here is the link. http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57...r-galaxy-s4/?tag=nl.e703&s_cid=e703&ttag=e703
Heres a list of what the update includes.
New Camera firmware with HDR video
Smearing issue has been fixed (Purple effect while scrolling)
Smart Pause Toggle
Move Apps to SD Card
Semi-transparent status bar
New Icons in Settings
Secure boot status in “About Phone”
Increased display legibility

I just read this on http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2420067,00.asp . This looks promising but right now its only out for the snapdragon processors. Hopefully we'll see the qualcomm version arise soon.

Snapdragon is from Qualcomm

I'm wondering if this firmware update brings "under the hood" changes. I.E. removing root exploits and bootloader bypasses.
All in all, I'm excited to see what the new camera firmware brings.

I was thinking the same thing, time to install a custom ROM before an OTA messes up my root.

Is there any way to disable the update by freezing an app?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using XDA Premium HD app

If I remember correctly, if you freeze/remove any of the Verizon apps OTA updates will not be pushed/downloaded to your device. I am not 100% sure on this, someone please correct me if I am wrong.

If your worried that the update will cause you to lose root I wouldnt worry about it being permanent. The devs we have here are awesome and would get root back for sure. You could also try voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. It might work if that happened.

no only if you remove the file needed for OTA, but if your rooted its you won't be able to download it anyway. Will mess up your device. usually theres a leak a week or two before them update gets pushed out and if your rooted you can just flash it and be fine

plus wouldn't you have to manually go and approve the download and update before it ran? Or are they automatically pushed and updated? I know on my wifes unrooted S3 I have to go in and get the update and run it. I haven't had an unrooted phone in so long I wouldn't know on mine

Can't wait till a dev merges this with their rom.

If you have a custom recovery the install will fail, so you're fine.

It probably only adds the HDR video that's talked about, it doesn't help the "lag" everyone but me seems to notice. People in the main board already have it installed I think.

Our phone has the Snapdragon 600 processor.

Looking forward to getting my hands on this. The app-to-sd feature is going to be very useful, especially for games.
Anybody have a demo video of what the HDR video looks like?

Mental note to self... Never ever post a logical statement 20 min after waking up... Haha

Otherwise pure stock. Remind me where the update .zip will reside, and I'll pull it off and Dropbox it for everyone.
I believe my Amaze is at 2.14.531.3 (is that the recent update to Personalization app?). Personally I think 2.14.531.3 vs 2.14.531.30 is really damned confusing, mathematically.

This is the update I was told about by tech support when I kept complaining about SIM card problems to Verizon after I borked (voice service, sms/mms suddenly stopped working while lte worked fine) my launch day device. I had insurance through a kiosk store so in order to avoid a refurb with 2.04 installed I plunked down $75 deductible for a brand new rootable replacement (so glad I did!). I literally had to physically damage it in order to do so even though the only thing wrong was no voice service. Anyway... The sales rep at the kiosk told me Sense5 (Android 4.2) is expected soon as well in another OTA update, but I wonder why they wouldn't have just put these updates together? Something does smell a bit fishy here.
I haven't had any SIM errors with my replacement so I'll steer around this one for now... How does Sense5 (4.2) sound for the DNA with an official release? Newt's port is pretty impressive but an official version might just smooth things out even more. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but why would VZW update the DNA if a newer device like the One is around the corner using Sense5? Wouldn't it make more "sense" to hold off on the 4.2 update to make us all want new phones? I heard they weren't going to carry it but who knows?

Because it's 1000x easier to make a update to fix 1 specific thing and have it approved by verizon then it is to essentially rewrite everyrhing and have months of back and forth between Verizon and HTC.

AWS LTE Bands. Verizon just enabled it in major markets. It will make the coverage better and faster. Only certain devices have the hardware to take advantage of it. Some devices come with it enabled and others have to have it enabled with a software update.
Just ran through the update. And it said there was another update, so far I have updated it twice. Will post back if I see anything. Holding my breath for KNOX to show its face.
I am curious to know all of the implications of the updates but will not risk losing root
Just a heads up, it is highly likely that many problems will come from updating. Namely, SELinux is expected to go from Permissive to Enforcing on VZW devices. This will cause issues with future rooting, and issues with SafeStrap.

Official - the 4.4.2 update - discussion thread

There's a leaked Samsung Android 4.4 schedule on the net and it points to January for the S4 and N3. Going by the title at the top of the screenshot/picture it's the international variant S4/N3. US will be even longer. I'm quite pissed about this as these are the flagship devices and should be upgraded MUCH sooner. Thoughts?

Not sure how big of a deal KitKat really will be,...
I installed some of the newer files [Email, Calendar, QuickOffice] from here:

To get some of the newer available apps, but moving to 4.4 washes away the hard work that Devs [Hashcode, beans, and Hyper] have already invested into 4.3.
I find Root and ROMs much more beneficial than the OS,....for now. De-bloating and customization is key!!

I really had to think about it when I chose to get the Note 3, but I figure the features on this phone are pretty amazing, and the way its looking is that phones will mostly be locked in the future. ATT is locking theirs, Verizon is locking theirs, Im sure the rest will follow. If two out of the four major US carriers are doing this, there is a good chance that someone will find a way around it. For the time being, we have Hashcode who has found away around the lock for the most part. We just need to get something like Loki or KEXEC working.
My other option was to keep a phone that has outdated resolution, software and hardware..... I had the Note 2 for a year and was ready to move on.

That part was for my Note 2. :cyclops:
We have no one to blame but ourselves. We accept the fact that the US carriers bend us over the barrel and do what they want to us. We accept it everyday by using their services, paying their crazy stupid prices and by accepting their restrictive contracts. Anyone who expects a US Wireless Carrier to offer an update let alone a Samsung update within a reasonable time frame is simply crazy.
The only reason the HTC One is getting it so fast is . . . well they don't have many phones to actually update or are worth updating so they have to keep pushing updates out to stay relevant. Of course the HTC one didn't get 4.2.2 we got stuck with 4.1.2 until we got 4.3. Of course I gave up on my HTC One long ago.

We probably don't have to worry much about bringing it to the Note 3 as I'm sure KK for our phone isn't too far behind. About damn time we see something!

Wouldn't it be a much safer approach to bring this S4 leaked version over to our Note 3? I mean you could be right KK for the Note 3 might be just around the corner, but what if that version of KK has a similar affect as the version that AT&T received, where the update wiped out Root and there was no way to restore it. Maybe that is something that is just going to happen with the Verizon KK update, Root will be lost, and the bounties will raise again. If you ask me, what if we take a look at the S4 KK leaked ROM and see if it is something that can be ported over to the Note 3, maybe it can, maybe there's a way to keep Root and enjoy KitKat.

I guess I don't know about obtaining root on a stock AT&T KK Note 3, but it seems there are plenty of custom, rooted ROMs based off the newest release. Porting a new version of android without the kernel (for those of us using SS) just seems like it'd be a lot of work and a PITA. Admittedly, I don't know much about this stuff so it may be more straight forward than I know.

Would it be possible use a stock KitKat ROM from another carrier such as Sprint, extract the radio, then insert the Verizon radio from S4 leak? I don't know much about ROM building or porting a ROM, but I know you need the correct radios to get it to work properly, maybe if cross-build with what is already available something should work right? and I hope on the retail version side of things...
When you start tweaking like that, it's becomes no longer signed, and then it won't flash. Plus I think the kernel is different, which is an automatic stop, as we can't flash different ones.

I'd think that the biggest issue with porting an S4 ROM to the Note 3 would be S-Pen support. Is that not a concern?
Personally I would try to use a Canadian 4.4 Rom since we have had the update for over a month now up here

SafeStrap ignores the boot.img even if present, so it can't get flashed on a retail N3.
Anything to note on the S4 leak such as root methods and what not?
The note 3 tar was posted on their site and in another thread. No root exploit is publicly available yet.
