[Q] [Xperia U] Wi-Fi connections give me "Limited Conectivity". - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hi there!
I just got a shiny new Xperia U and proceeded to connect to Wi-Fi, only to discover that it will not connect entirely, instead giving me "Limited Conectivity".
Now, I've been searching all over the Internet for the past few days and have found many users with similar problems (and a whole bunch of solutions that didn't work). Basically what's going on is that the DHCP is giving me a 169.254.xx.xx adress instead of a 192.168.xx.xx as it should. This happens on ALL routers. I've managed to get internet at work by using a static IP and setting the DNS manually, but then that same solution didn't work at home (work is WPA, home is WEP, not sure if that's the reason). And in any case, setting up DNS for every Wi-Fi connection is not really a plausible solution (public Wi-Fi spots ain't gonna tell you their DNS).
So, that's as far as I've managed to get. I've downloaded some of those Wi-Fi fixer apps but they don't work. I've been trying everything short of rooting the device (haven't done it yet, never had a Smartphone before and I rather not go too deep unless strictly necesary).
Anyway, that's my problem. If anyone can give me a hand, I'd be most grateful.
And finally tech specs:
Android 4.0.4
Model number: ST25a
Build number: 6.1.1.B.1.10
Thanks in advance!

Ok, and um... how do I do that? The Sony software (PC companion, the one I used to update from 2.3.7) says I'm up to date. I'm going to try the Sony updater, maybe that will download the propper one.
(for reference, baseband version is u8500-49020905-P2H_EC01, I assume this is what you mean the update will update and fix)
EDIT: tried with Sony Updater. The thing reinstalled everything, erased my data (not much data really but I'd have liked to keep it) and then installed B1.10. I'm at a loss here.

I'm trying to find the firmware download. All I see is ROMs. That's not it, it it? Or should I just put a ROM with that latest firmware? It's all very confusing.
Edit: ok, I THINK I found it. Xperia U (ST25i)_6.1.1.B.1.89 ICS 4.0.4_Tim Italy By Shisma.ftf that should be it. 400 Megs.
Edit2: Ok, did that. Baseband and firmware are updated and... nope, still "Limited Conectivity" with IP 169.254.xx.xx

CM9? Not sure what that is.
It COULD be hardware, I've seen many people complaining about the same thing with Xperia phones. Even on the Sony forums (and Sony's response is always "check the router"). But since other people don't have this isuue, I'm guessing it's gotta be solvable by software.
I fear that if it's the model and if I just return it, they'll give me another one and it will have the exact same problem
Edit: ok, found that CM9 means a custom ROM. I guess after installing a firmware, installing a ROM shouldn't be too much of a problem (even if I don't fully understand the whole thing). Will try. Any tips?
Edit2: oh dear god, I just went to the list here on XDA, there's so many! I thought it was just one! Um... help? I'm completely lost here.

Okay, CM9 is AOSP android ( the pure android, without Sony's framework or addons) with some extra features. Actually not all xpu models suffer from the problem you describe. My suggestion is that you exchange it for a new model. But if you want to try cm9, pm me. I'll give a detailed guide

This is shiny new under warranty? Why not take it back to service center before doing things that may break warranty? (Just my opinion).

Yes, shiny new under warranty. I'm going to take it there tomorrow. Haven't decided if I'm gonna root it or not. I mean... what's more likely? That it's a software problem and can be solved by instaling custom ROM? Or that it's a hardware problem and I should ask for another one? What are the chances that a new one WILL have working Wi-Fi?
I'ts been a crazy week trying to sort this thing out. I'm completely lost and willing to do anything. But yeah maybe I shouldn't jump into rooting if changing is easy (but WILL it be easier? I'll know that tomorrow when visiting my carrier I suppose).
Typical software developer, my frist instinct was to try and solve it myself

Quick solutions...
Flash the lastest stock ROM using flashtool, you know, download and install the program, download the ROM, put in firmware folder, click at the thunder icon, choose flashmode pick the ROM and follow screen instructions.
If doesn't work, go for your warranty.
Any question just ask.
EDIT: You need to install drivers for flashing, is at drivers folder, you can search a tutorial for flashtool.

WiFi Direct

So I'm a bit pi**ed off that WiFi Direct isn't in ICS, A few days ago I'm sure I saw a ROM or something where the person who made it had somehow got WiFi Direct into it but now I can't find it, Don't remember the name of the ROM or anything so any help there would be greatly appreciated.
Also on my last phone, A Nexus S, It was possible to just flash certain parts of a ROM onto my phone without having to flash the whole thing, Kind of like a mix 'n' match ROM, Sort of, Would it be possible for anyone to figure out the code or whatever for WiFi Direct from another phone then make it into a flashable file to put on the XS ?
You can't add it that simply. AOSP ROMs will have it though.
So this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780338 for example would have Wifi Direct enabled ?

First of all, edit the thread's title to something more descriptive, like "Problem changing baseband"
Did the NV2 Backup complete successfully? It's the main thing, without that say goodbye to your phone signal.
Weird that 45m timeout, I changed my P500's baseband in less than 10m I think... did you follow drnotor's guide entirely? Including the part of disabling LG modem and not touching the phone until it finishes?

Yes.
Sorry for the bad title
If you have your nv2backup you could try flashing it over once again from step 1, maybe that works.
It worked. I stopped the program and run it again. My Phone is running again. The problem with error searching network on CM9 persists. The Baseband rechange doesn't bring the solution.
Now that you already have NV file if you use lgmdp always in emergency mode dont mather if you flash only bb or recovery or the entire rom but flash with phone already in emergency mode and lgmdp will not touch the nv file

Good tip. Next time I make it from emergency mode.
The stupid thing is that I risk a lot for nothing, cause the baseband didn't bring me something.

I asked few times but nobody answered. I don't see it on Bug-List and so I thought it was the fault of my phone. I like ICS and JB but as I explained on other posts I live on the borderline to other countries and I cannot live with automatic search of networks, cause It can be really expensive for me.

As said above, you will have the bug as long as you are using the junky Froyo RIL stack. This issue exists on CM7 as well since they've "fixed" the stupid 128KB SIMs by reverting the RIL stack. Messing with baseband will not solve anything for you.
http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=5182
Ask your operator to have roaming deactivated, best I can offer if you want CM9+. On CM7, the RIL can be switched back to GB, with CM9 this causes a force-close loop with the phone app -> no go.
Is there a way to check whether I have a Funny SIM Card or not? And in case I have, is it possible to let it change from provider and with which excuse?

Well, flash latest CM7, flash the attached ZIP and if your SIM does not get recognized, it is funny.
Thanks a lot.
I made all the steps and the SIM works. Now I have to hope that CM will revert the RIL to GB too, so that I can use CM9+.
You wrote that this Patch runs only on CM7 and not on CM9+. Is there in fact no chance to make a similar patch for the newer firmwares?

Sure there is, however I am not going to recompile CM9 for this, it requires patching files, overwriting the libs is no longer enough, as said above.
Do you mean mik_os git changes in the above issue link?
Easier would be that CM changes back to GB RIL.

[Q] GPS not locking satellite

Hi,
I have a Samsung s3 int I9300 and it can see a satellite but will not lock onto them and thus will not work with driving directions on google maps.
I have tested it side by side with an s2 and the s2 pics up a satellite quickly wile the s3 struggles to lock onto one.
My phone has been rooted and had Omega running on it but I have tried many different versions of firmware and also have done a full restore via odin and the 3 files.
It is connected to T-Mobile (EE) Uk and he internet is working perfectly.
Please can someone help me find out if it is a software of hardware error.
If you need any more info please ask and I will prove it straight away.

try a different rom and/or kernel
HI,
I have just done a complete unroot and install using Odin. I am currently running a fresh I9300XXEMC2_I9300OXAEMC2_BTU but still no gps!
I am running a stock kernel and Rom so am I right in thinking it is not a software issue?
I do not have insurance but as it is a hardware issue could I get Samsung to repair it for free?
Is there anything else I could try?

read this if yours is rebooting and unknown imei & baseband!

Mods please move this if necessary
Guys, I have to post this in hopes it will help others.
If you still have this device and had the problem where it reboots once it boots and have no imei and baseband, i solved it. finally!
I tried everything, EVERYTHING initially. i opened the device more times than i can remember. I changed the power button, gave it a chemical bath, removed the sim holder, adjusted every adjustable aspect of it but nothing. this started when i flashed some rom (cant remember which one), and it started rebooting as soon as the os loaded. not a random reboot but as soon as the os loaded, no matter what rom i flashed. thats when i tried all of the posted solutions on the power button issues of this phone. nothing worked. Then when i finally got a stock odin to work, i noticed i had baseband unknown and imei unknown and therefore no sim functions. i began researching and i did everything from flashing every available modem, to flashing all stock roms with odin and with keis, to that trick of forcing an iemi and adding some folder that may have been deleted. i even looked to order the sim holder that people recommended but i never bothered (thankfully) as many said it didnt work. I eventually was advised that my ONLY solution was to jtag it. i almost ordered devices like nspro etc, but alas, i gave up finally and just used it as a tablet with a rudimentary os (the only one that didnt reboot on me ) with abysmal battery life (3 to 4 hours on standby) until i finally left it in a drawer and forgot it for most of the year. Fast forward to yesterday. ill spare the details of why i had to, but basically i took back the challenge to get it working, believing that it was a software problem that i could solve with the help of xda's resources. and after a sleepless night and much research and trials, i finally have a fully working i717 with insane battery life (2% lost on standby overnight). so here's what i did. I used odin to flash this rom (email me for the link, i dont want to break any forum rules) and once it was done, the os began to boot but it stuck on the loading screen. this was actually good news since it wasnt rebooting! i left it for an hour just in case and eventually forced the shut down by holding power button (didnt remove the battery). then i booted into download and used odin to flash cwm recovery (latest one, search for an app to convert the img file to a md5 that odin can use). i booted into recovery and once there i downloaded the miui v5 rom in the development section of this forum, (i chose miui because initially it was the only other rom that didnt reboot, but i SUSPECT that the others should be fine now once i flashed the odin rom) and once it installed and booted, voila! cell reception and i can make and receive calls!. Everything is working perfectly now!! thank God. I left it on miui because i like it and it works as is, but i suppose the other roms like the 4.4 roms should, in theory, work now. in the link i have there is the rom AND a modem as well, i did NOT flash the modem as i didnt need to so you shouldnt have to either. Thanks for reading, and i sincerely hope that i could help someone out with this post. thanks to xda and the contributors who helped me through this ordeal!
Sincerely,
My phone rebooted 3 times while trying to read this. I wasn't sure if you were actually offering help or trying to sell us some new sports bra.
If you have some miracle files then post the link. Why make this an egg hunt? I'm sure the forum would appreciate it.

And its not an 'egg hunt' if you read it you would see that i didnt want to break any forum rules by posting links without permission since i cant contact the owner of the site with the links. I didnt have to post anything atall and i asked for no gratitude in return but a little civility goes a long way.
I read this and thought xda became a blog site!
Just wanted to say thanks for your post cause I have been experiencing loss of my mobile signal after flashing to cm 10.1. I have been doing a ton of reading trying to solve my issue but can't seem to find a resolution.
Your post give me a little hope that I can solve my issue.

Email him for the link to the rom. I forgot what it was. It has been a while. Sorry.
Can you get to download mode? If you can't, then find out which rom he used.
